After Noa had forced Briar into their contract, Briar hadn't thought he would have time to go on errands and odd jobs for anyone else. For a while that had been true; Noa had saddled him with several projects all at once, and more one-off requests besides. But now it had settled down somewhat, and all the remaining projects were the sort of long term commitments that didn't benefit from anything but sustained and measured efforts. And so, somehow, he had eked out enough time to start going back to the job board again. ... Well, he had brought one of those long term projects with him, in the form of the doe that he was training as a mount. But Briar preferred to think of it as merely himself enjoying her company, rather than the idea that he was doing this for the sake of... what? Doing Noa's bidding, maybe? 1

Granted, Noa hadn't exactly been following up on how the doe was coming along, which Briar was singularly glad for. But she had been one of his gifts, and as much as Briar disliked admitting it, somehow it felt like that tainted this whole project with Noa's influence.
Still, there were other things for him to focus on today. He'd taken on a job from someone complaining of pests in their garden. He didn't think that would be too difficult, since he was a gardener himself. It felt like a nice way to ease himself back into the swing of having time to take up odd jobs again. And if the doe got a little change of pace from coming along with him, that was good too, wasn't it?
His optimism lasted until he got to the garden in question, and saw for himself just what sort of pests he was dealing with.

He had expected there to be pests. He had actually prepared himself for the situation to be pretty bad. He just hadn't expected them to be so... big.
Maybe that was a mistake on his part. There were several insect species cultivated by the local labs that were the size of a small dog or bigger. But they didn't usually infest gardens like this, even so. Staring at a place that was crawling with worms the size of his forearm, Briar was at a loss for what to do.
But he had taken the job, and they were already here, so...
He glanced back at the doe, who was walking more or less obediently behind him. He probably should have been keeping a closer eye on her to make sure she didn't eat anything strange, but right now he was sort of wishing he had brought Yeo-reum with him instead.

The benefit would have been twofold, in that case. Yeo-reum was all too willing to deal with things that needed getting rid of -- though Briar wasn't sure if garden pests would have been enough beneath his notice that he would take a little convincing. But Briar was sure he could have convinced Yeo-reum eventually, and then it would have been a good opportunity for the Tat to vent some of the anger that he always seemed to have bottled up inside.
Unfortunately, however, he was in the company of the doe, who seemed more or less content with her lot, and thus far hadn't displayed any desire to hurt anyone.
Maybe this would be a good opportunity to make use of the magic he'd recently come into instead. Could he hit all of these bugs with an arcane bolt of some sort, or maybe with a big gust of wind?

Briar formed a tiny swirl of wind in his hand, and tested it. It still felt strange to do it... No, that wasn't quite right; it was more that it felt strange that it didn't feel more strange. Somehow he knew how to do these things despite never having done them in his life. But after a little experimenting, he thought that he could manage it, and hopefully with minimal damage to the garden itself.
He had to convince the doe to stand a ways away while he did it, but Briar walked to the center of the garden, then gathered a mass of wind to himself before dispersing it all at once, sending tiny blades of it in every direction.
It was a good thing none of these pest insects were very sturdy. The winds had handily finished them off, so all there was left to do was collect them.
