Another pachee breeding. Fiera had been getting a lot of hits on her newspaper listings lately- Breezy Daze Kennels was normally the tagline she used for her houluh, but it had been catching a lot of eyes for her pachee as well. She had discussed this particular breeding with a nice young man over the phone. He sounded familiar, but she hardly made a note of it- her job as a minor politician had her meeting a lot of people in her community, and all of the voices blended together after a certain point. The male they had settled on was Hot Chocolatey Milk, or Chocolate for short. He was a handsome lad, with rich brown fur and a smattering of ocelot-like spots across his body and tail. She also had in her pocket three berries for the female to eat- hopefully they would give even higher quality offspring than usual.

Petsitting. That was a job that Seveth could handle. That was what he thought, anyway -- after he had read the ad over several times, to make sure there weren't some weird hidden clauses he didn't know about, and a photo of the pet in question had been included. Did he really just need to watch this Pachee for an afternoon? And they would pay him for it? Okay, that didn't seem too bad.
They did apparently neglect to mention that he would be doing this watching at the breeding center. And that he would have to arrange the -- what, the stud? So he'd pored through the listings he could find and settled on a match that seemed like it might produce something cute, not that he knew the first thing about breeding Pachee. The woman on the other end of the line seemed a lot more knowledgeable than he did though, and she seemed for it, so he was sure it would work out.
So here he was, at the breeding center, with the Pachee in question in a carrier. What had her name been again? Peaches? Penny? Was it too late to call the owner and ask?

Chocolate sat patiently inside the carrier, not sleeping or nervous- he was a very relaxed little pachee. Some of the others could afford to learn something from him, Fiera thought to herself. Still, where was his beau for the day? Fiera looked up the sidewalk and saw and approaching figure in a carrier small enough to fit a pachee. Ah, that was probably it. She squinted at the man approaching. He was unassuming in appearance- a regular human, casually dressed, approaching at a regular pace. Along with his voice though, his face did seem... a little familiar...
Oh no. It was like a bucket of ice water went down Fiera's back, her tail puffing out in spite of herself. She glanced down at the carrier he was holding. The little face inside was familiar too- this was indeed the person she was supposed to be meeting. Fuck. As he approached, her thoughts bickered and slapped each other, leading her to only be able to summon a few short syllables. "Oh. It's you."

Seveth had been so caught up debating the merits of just asking the owner for the name versus simply making one up that he hadn't actually registered the woman standing outside the breeding center until it was too late. Or rather, he had registered that there was a woman there back when it had been too far to see any details, and assumed that this was who he was supposed to meet. Judging by the carrier she had, he was probably right. Unfortunately, they were already acquainted, and the clipped words she had for him upon his arrival made it pretty clear that she hadn't forgotten him either.
"Oh, ah, yep! It's me!" said Seveth, smiling reflexively. He laughed a little, awkwardly. That was a reflex too. Actually, it probably wasn't a reflex so much as it was a nervous tic, but those were almost the same thing anyway. "And... it's you! Wow, small world, right?" Maybe if he tried hard enough to sound like everything was cool, it would be.

"Not big enough for both of us." Fiera muttered under her breath, still glaring at the man before pinching the bridge of her nose. "Please tell me you aren't the person I'm meant to be doing this with. Perhaps you're just a deliveryman? Perhaps there's a second, smaller person behind you?" She said, perking her ears up and leaning over to look behind him for emphasis. "At least tell me you know which end of the pachee is the front." She said, pitying the creature in the cage already. If this man thought a dragon could fit in a tiny apartment building, she had no doubt that he'd be just as incompetent in caring for pachee. Granted, the deposit for the breeding had already been put down and the room reserved, but she couldn't imagine making small talk with this chucklehead for half an hour while the pachee played with each other.

Seveth laughed again at the woman's response, this time rather in spite of himself; he hadn't expected to have anything to laugh about. But her comment about a second, smaller person brought Rei to mind. Oh, how good would it have been if she were here too? Except he would never convince her to come with him, not for this sort of thing. "Well, you know, sometimes I get the feeling that I'm just three little guys in a trenchcoat," Seveth said, "but then I have my morning coffee." Still joking, still trying to pretend as though this was just a little banter between friends. It wasn't, and he knew it wasn't, but what was life if not Seveth grasping at straws at all times?
Her comment about the Pachee did strike a bit close to home though, and he winced before he could catch himself. He gently lifted the carrier, inside which the Pachee he was petsitting was glancing uneasily back and forth. "She's, er, not mine actually, but the owner wanted to arrange for a breeding while they were busy with... something else. Other Pachee, I think, actually."

Fiera relaxed a bit at that last comment. "Oh, so they DID hire you to bring them here. Hm. Guess we'd better get this over with then." She set down Chocolate's carrier for a moment before opening her bag. "These are breeding berries." She said, holding them out to Seveth. "The female mashes them up with her paws and 'eats' them." She said, emphasizing 'eats' with finger quotes. "They make fancy things happen to the offspring." She then gestured to the doors. "You can do that whenever, but we still have to check in and get in the breeding room. Should be pretty easy from there. They don't exactly take long." She said, and Chocolate rustled inside his cage. She paused for a moment, her eyes lingering on the pretty calico pachee in Seveth's carrier. "So what's the little sweetie's name, then? I don't think I caught it when we were discussing the breeding."

For whatever reason, something he said had diffused some of the tension in the woman with the Pachee. Seveth relaxed when she did -- not fully, of course, but wasn't it always more comfortable when someone stopped glaring at you? He studied the berries she held out, frowning slightly as he followed her explanation. "Wow, there's a lot more to this than I thought. Wait, why are-- Do they not... have mouths?" Blinking, he leaned over to peer inside the carrier, where the Pachee within had crept forward a little more. Greeted by the sudden appearance of his face though, she flattened her ears. "You're kidding! They really don't have mouths!"
He was still marveling at this revelation when the woman's question brought him out of his thoughts. "Her name! Right. Uhhhh..." He was really hoping she wouldn't ask, but unfortunately, his luck hadn't held. "Penny? Pen... Penelope? Wait, hold on, it'll come to me... Pop... Poppy? Yeah, I think that's it."

Fiera watched with slight bemusement as Seveth figured out a very obvious feature of pachee anatomy. "Wow, you really HAVEN'T done this before. Yes, they don't have mouths. They have little root feet. Or more specifically- little miss 'something-something' here has root feet. They absorb stuff through them- nothing solid, but they do love their fruit mushes." She said with a chuckle before opening the door for him. She made her way towards the front desk and talked to the attendant there, getting their paperwork and a tag with their room number on it. "Sign these. It's basic don't-sue-us stuff, you know. Boilerplate." She said, setting down Chocolate's carrier and going through her own papers with practiced grace. Hopefully this guy could manage a pen. From there, all they'd have to do is go to their breeding room and let their pachee free inside of it to do their business.

"Well, you know, first time for everything and all that," Seveth said, smiling unapologetically now. If there was one thing he was used to, it was being a novice at something. Actually, maybe it was mild censure from everyone he knew. Or both. One probably had a lot to do with the other. Walking through the door that was being held open for him, Seveth said, "Thanks!"
He had to set down the carrier to fill out the form; he didn't fancy trying to balance it and the clipboard at the same time. Maybe he should have read it more closely, but what was the worst they could put in there?
Once all the paperwork was sorted out, he took his Pachee to their assigned room, then opened the carrier door and let her out. "All good to go now, right?" She'd made it sound so simple, and hopefully the Pachee would know how to take care of business. Seveth sure didn't know what he would need to do if things didn't go smoothly.
