Emery had found another job off of the quest board, one quite different from her last. Rather than retrieve an item or clear an area, she had been asked to train a particularly unruly lamadidron. Their owner had seemed quite harried and busy with other pets but needed to get this done, and so they had outsourced it to Emery. While she wasn't displeased to have the work, she wasn't quite sure how she was going to do it now that she was here. She needed to teach the creature not to bite things and how to strike foes with it's tail. Easy enough on paper, quite common tricks, but now that the lamadidron was there in front of her, she was at a bit of a loss. It was quite a deal larger than her. It was also larger than Pyrrhos, who she had brought along with her for the day. Emery 6 Pyrrhos 1.1/1.1 1 (This is Emery's first time completing this quest.)

The three of them were standing in a fenced off training area in the public park, with the lamadidron leashed to one of the fence posts, unable to escape. The ground under their feet was soft and sandy, and a training dummy stood in the middle of the field. Pyrrhos slowly paraded around the edge, in absence of anything else to do. He would be fine. The lamadidron on the other hand, she had been told, had a bit of an issue with paying attention. Now that she was here in the training field, she could see what his owner meant. Even as Emery looked at him, the stonemoss lamadidron's eyes were flicking from her, to the birds flying in the sky, to a couple walking their houluh just outside of the pen, to a bug sitting on the training dummy. Emery had the feeling she had her work cut out for her.

As she watched however, the Lamadidron seemed to hone in on the bug, sniffing loudly at it. Emery was about to step towards it, preparing to tell it not to eat that- perhaps leaning into that particular trick- only for the stonemoss lamadidron to swipe its tail at it instead. Ah. Well, that was one way to get started on training. It missed the insect, but its tail softly thudded against the training dummy instead. "Good strike." Emery said, rustling around in her pockets. She had grabbed some pebbles from a pet supply store on the way here. She was quick to toss them at the lamadidron's feet, trying to reward them for, if accidentally, stumbling on one of the two tricks she wanted to teach it today. Unfortunately, that meant that its focus on the bug was immediately ruined as it bounced on the pebbles, chewing them up along with mouthfuls of sand.

It was a little distasteful to watch, but Emery supposed she couldn't expect an animal to have the same tastes as her. Emery pointed at the dummy again, trying to get its attention. "Strike. Strike again." She said, before picking up the creature's tail and pressing it against the dummy. "Strike." She emphasized again, but the lamadidron looked at her blankly before returning to snuffling around in the sand once more, to Emery's distaste. She sighed loudly, dragging a hand down her screen. Just then though- the bug returned. Emery watched as it crawled up the dummy- perhaps there was something spilled on it that it thought was tasty, which was why it kept returning. Emery wasn't about to waste this opportunity. "Hey- hey!" She said, snapping her fingers to get the lamadidron's attention. It took a few tries, but it finally worked, and Emery gestured at the insect again. "Strike." She repeated.

The lamadidron snorted loudly and wasted no time, this time swinging its tail even faster and harder to try and hit the bug. Once again it missed, but only barely this time, sending the dummy spinning on its pole. That was a hit that could have actually done some damage had the dummy been a real creature! Emery was quick to reward the creature with more pebbles, which it ate up excitedly. With that done and the creature distracted, Emery finally had a good idea. She dug through her pockets again and pulled out a marker- she always had one lying around somewhere inside her ensemble. Then, she drew a tiny bug on the surface of the dummy. The black ink stood out well against the light brown fabric, and she figured it would look close enough to the real thing to fool the lamadidron into hitting it. As the creature finished eating, Emery capped the marker and put it away again.

"Strike." She repeated once more, gesturing at the dummy. Luckily for her, the lamadidron knew well enough by now to at least look up when she said that, and she saw its facial expression change as it spotted the bug she had drawn. She stepped back as it whirled its tail around, slamming it into the dummy with a satisfying thud. "Perfect." Emery said. She gave the creature some treats and tried the trick again a few times, and each time it worked. It looked like she had managed to teach it that trick- but teaching a creature to perform an action was relatively easy. Teaching them NOT to do something was a bit harder, especially with a creature you didn't know very well. But alas, she'd have to try her best. She just had to teach the lamadidron how to not bite things- hopefully that wouldn't be too much of an issue.

It soon proved to be quite an issue. Emery's choice for this was to keep it from trying to gnaw through her fingers to get to a treat hidden in her hand, but it wasn't working well at all. She kept repeating "No bites" and pushing its head away, but it never seemed to get the picture. The lamadidron had gone from not being able to focus on anything to only being able to focus on the rocks in her hand, actual fingers be damned. Luckily Emery usually wore quite thick gloves and so it hadn't been able to actually hurt her yet, but it was clear that a greater consequence was needed for misbehavior... she just wasn't sure what. It was a necessary trick to learn. Not everything in the world was safe to eat, and it was better to teach that to the beast now rather than learn a costly lesson later.

As Emery tried to set the command word, the stonemoss lamadidron lost focus once again, gazing at something towards the edge of the training field. The woman sighed deeply. "What is it now?" She grumbled, following the beast's gaze. It had finally noticed Pyrrhos and his endless patrol around the perimeter of the field, walking from fence post to fence post along the path Emery had placed him when they first entered. Emery was about to turn away, ignore him, and encourage her temporary ward to do the same when an idea sprung into her head. She walked over to Pyrrhos and placed a hand in front of him, gently bringing the golem to a stop. The lamadidron followed after her curiously, sniffing at the little creature that it had only just noticed. Then, she pulled out one of the stones she had been feeding the lamadidron, and it immediately perked up.

She set the stone at Pyrrhos's feet, and pointed at it. "No bites." She said sternly, and she knew that by now the lamadidron probably knew what the command meant, it just didn't see the point in following it. Well... it probably would soon. Sure enough the lamadidron moved forward towards the stone, intent on grabbing it right out from under Pyrrhos. Like other elementals, Pyrrhos didn't have much in the way of "natural instincts". As a magically constructed species, they tended to be pretty blank, lacking the years of evolutionary influence to give them natural instincts. Luckily a few things had come 'programmed' in, and one of those was a natural urge to warn other creatures of their potentially dangerous nature- after all, so much as touching an elemental could cause major damage if one wasn't prepared, and there were a lot of curious animals out there. Including the one getting very, very close to Pyrrhos right now.

The lamadidron reached in, attempting to grab the stone- only for Pyrrhos to suddenly puff out to twice his size, flames flaring off at every angle. Emery could feel the heat against her neck from where she was standing, and she was sure it was even hotter from the lamadidron's perspective. It bugled in surprise, scrambling backwards faster than she thought a creature that size could ever move, before hiding behind Emery. "...I told you so." She couldn't help but say. She tried the trick a few more times after that and luckily, this time it listened- albeit while casting a wary eye at Pyrrhos the whole time. As the sun sank lower in the sky, the lamadidron's owner finally came to pick it up. Emery demonstrated the tricks she had managed to teach it and it thankfully obeyed. With the client satisfied, Emery got her paperwork for the quest signed off. An exhausting task to be sure, but one she had managed to complete to satisfaction.
