On the surface, it was simple enough. Reality was another matter entirely. Wind stung her exposed cheeks as it whipped up the hillside. The darkening night, hiding her rouging skin, brilliantly glorified the sprawling city lights. So much motion, so much life. It felt desperately unnatural. A glistening virus, spreading its crawling fingers farther and farther each year. And the heart of it all—the Labs. In all the tangle of glowing windows, she couldn't discern it with certainty. Not in the dark of this late-autumn night. But pushing on this last hour had been worth it. It was now, after all these weeks, within sight.
Elvye pulled her scarf back up over her nose, letting the heat of her breath recover her flushing face. She was here, finally, but she would not reach the city limits tonight. A tightness in her chest surged as she thought of him.
Desperately close, but impossibly far. Lost in the endless lights—she felt his pull.

✦ During the infrequent lulls of rushing air, an unnatural stillness swept over her senses. Too far yet to snare the sounds of the city, only a faint drone of distant insects rolled monotonously through the lightened breeze.
The change was hardly subtle. All this way, insects rang symphonies along every step of uninhabited wilds. Perhaps it was merely the season—along her journey, she had watched the leaves fan out in sunset glory before crumbling, desiccated, underfoot. Brisk mornings had become brittle, and at times, she could no longer bring warmth to weary feet. A stream of doubt trickled through, however, as she watched the piercing lights. Nature had no place here—not anymore. Its roots had been ripped from the landscape, replanted with wire and steel. The insects had gone, not to burrow amidst the littered forest floor, but to flee the empire stretched out on her horizon.
The fear, the doubt, that had flowed in every footstep, gripped her trembling heart with sharp, metal tongs.
