They pair were excellently lucky, Morgan decided, since nothing out of the ordinary managed to happen while they were getting the picnic set up. Morgan's sandwiches were ready, the flat artisan bread fresh and flakey, buttered now with garlic butter, lightly toasted and then chilled chillis, salty baakir cheese, and thin slices of meat were pressed upon it. Morgan really did prefer meat and dairy to probably anything else; a weakness as far as they were concerned. Morgan had to do without from the ages of twelve to fifteen, so they had craved meat more than anything else. They remembered someone once paid them with a galabex haunch for some work they had done instead of credits, and though Morgan had feigned begrudging acceptance, they had went home and just ate theirself sick on it.
As far as Morgan was concerned, as they looked down at the young Millicent eating her choice of the cut up fruits, none of Morgan's family now would ever have to go through that. Ever.

Morgan had a lot of convictions, none of which were really normal for those living in the City. It was a strange tight-rope to walk, this morality, and it was completely contrary to the popular strain. That made things difficult, but it would probably have been more difficult if they weren't in the position they were currently in. Not really requiring a job was a strange thing that they knew from experience was not the normal position; they had, after all, only found out about this whenever they were a mid-teen instead of a young teenager as soon as they would have been fine. Morgan felt simultaneously like they owed to use it for something that they found worthy of it; and also like there was very little out there that was actually worthy of wasting their time on. It was a rougher situation than they would have liked, but it was Morgan's birthright.
Taking care of beings like Millicent that couldn't protect their selves in this political climate was a worthy endeavor.

Morgan couldn't help but overthink things; it was part of themself. Something that Morgan had tried to stop doing of course, but been ultimately unable to change. A shame, really, Morgan couldn't help but to think as they devoured their sandwich in relative peace. The chillis went really well with the cheese; it was a somewhat bitter variety of cheese with a harsh and lovely scent, and of course the meat was tender. Morgan had made sure always to prepare things as they needed to be prepared (they were a good cook, after all- out of necessity) and even the most tough cuts of baakiir could be made soft and tender by an amount of preparation required by the cut. Morgan was pleased with it, they felt like the sandwich was excellent, and the next one was just waiting on them! Millicent seemed to be doing quite well as well, on her fruits.

The day was becoming quite a lazy one, thus far. Morgan had many things to do, but perhaps it was good that the mansion was holding out on the strange things it could do today. Morgan definitely did not need anything dangerous going on, of course, but they didn't have much longer to see what all the mansion had to offer this month (if it didn't decide to chase them out, as it had done for such a long time now at least once a month towards the end of the month) and that was a bummer. Perhaps they still had some time to look around the yard... Though it was within the mansion itself that Morgan wished to be able to pick up a few things. They wanted to study this month's strange connection to the Lab theme; perhaps it didn't have anything to do with the actual Labs of the City? Morgan hoped not.

It was a strange theme, for certain. Morgan had been mulling it over all month, but it wasn't a puzzle box to be fiddled with until the answer was clicked into place. It was more of a sustained mystery; and though Morgan hated it they did realize that it would probably be continued next year. They had already asked around and figured out that it was indeed a rotating thing instead of a one time thing. The mansion did rotate each year; so this would be the same next November, or at least similar. This opened up a ton of new possibilities; what did it mean? Would it be identical next year? Would the mansion pull the exact same tricks at the exact same time, or would it be quite different? Morgan wanted to know; and that meant more testing in the future!
Morgan finished their final sandwich, and watched Millicent for whenever she was done.

It took a while for Millicent to finally get finished with her own meal. She was entirely much more picky than Morgan had anticipated, but she was really good about trying each food at least once before deciding which ones she actually wanted. Morgan watched her with curiosity the entire time; it was almost uncanny seeing her facial expressions that were nearly human. The thing that was the most uncanny for Morgan was the scrunching of her nose when she tasted a food that she decided that she did not like. It wasn't an uncomfortable un-canniness though, simply something that interested Morgan really. It was strange that folks didn't necessarily consider them humanoid. Sure, they had little ears and such that were animalistic, but so did humanishes? Morgan tilted their head curiously, and waited until the youngster was completely finished eating to begin to clean up. Morgan smiled softly at Millicent, who just crossed her arms in response to their smile.

It was okay, of course. Morgan was fine if Millicent didn't wind up liking them, this just happened sometimes. People didn't always like each other. In fact, Morgan tended to be rather prickly when it came to folks and hated other people quite a bit, so Morgan wouldn't be shocked if Millicent didn't wind up liking them. However, Morgan was dead-set on teaching Millicent to speak before they make the determination of whether or not Millicent just didn't like to be around Morgan. It could just be the communication barrier and the fact that they did have completely different mannerisms. Morgan got everything cleaned up from their meal, and wiped their hands on a hand-kerchief that they had brought. Then, they put the hand-kerchief down on the blanket and pointed towards it before speaking and using LSL to try to communicate with the harachiu. They'd been working really slow with her at it.

It is very important, Morgan knows, to keep 'speaking' to Millicent even if she doesn't understand yet, to get her eventually used to it. Undoubtedly, she would attempt to begin picking it up whenever the time came. However, when that time would come, Morgan did not know. She had not even attempted to vocalize yet, which was understandable perhaps. Maybe she was incapable of it? Hopefully the youngster wasn't mute, that would make it much more difficult to make her heard... Though with the advent of LSL, she should be able to communicate regardless. That would be good, at least. Only time would be able to tell. "Clean off your hands, Millicent." Morgan said and signed to her. Millicent watched, this time much more interested in the movements, but ultimately did not understand. Morgan nodded to her quietly, and then repeated it in both common and LSL. At this, Morgan wiped their hands again on the hand-kerchief.

In a moment of surprising clarity, Morgan is shocked to see Millicent squint her large (for her tiny face anyway) eyes at Morgan and then step forward to the cloth, rubbing her hands on it in the exact same way. Of course, she wasn't understanding the words or the hand signs, but she did understand the need to repeat the motion. It cleaned off her hands, and she looked down to realize that the stickiness from the fruits was good. "Good job, Millicent!" Morgan said, smiling. "Very good job, you cleaned your hands." Morgan made sure to speak common and sign at the same time to make sure that she would eventually pick it up. Millicent just tilted her head, as if not quite understanding, but climbed up onto Morgan's knee anyway, to look and see what the surroundings were like. Morgan felt... Odd; it was weird that the mansion hadn't pulled anything yet.

Morgan was so used to the mansion being rather harsh during the latter part of the month that they felt anxious even thinking about it. However, it had been a nice outing so far. Morgan did want to stay here a bit and maybe work with Millicent more. She was already beginning to pay more attention to Morgan, so that was good. It might be a good change of pace to her usual distaste for Morgan; at the very least she may learn some more communication skills. She was already making more pronounced facial expressions at Morgan, perhaps in some attempt to communicate in the way that she currently knew how. She 'spoke' with her body often, crossing her arms, holding her shoulders up or down, tilting her head one way or another. Morgan was beginning to pick up information from her attempts to communicate as well. Perhaps this was a good thing and would help in the future.

It was really getting about time to pack up, Morgan noted. They really didn't have a whole lot of time this month anymore, this was probably going to be their last trip. However, they did want to spend as much time here with Millicent as possible, since Morgan wasn't sure what time they would have to go out again soon. She tended to pay more attention to Morgan when they were outside, even though Millicent spent a long time around Morgan at home each day anyway. It was a bit of a conundrum, soon Morgan would be more strapped for time than they had even been before. It was a real shame to even consider it! "Alright Millicent, we're gonna need to go soon." Morgan said, feeling pretty calm all things considered. They'd been hoping for a little... More this trip. They hadn't seen much of anything thus far really...

It was definitely a big ole shame indeed. Morgan frowned, glanced out over the yard, and then sighed. The day was just not that great. They were hoping for more, and they hadn't managed it despite attempts. They weren't really sure what they had been hoping for. Perhaps they were hoping that things would be not too dangerous for Millicent here a little too much; the mansion just hadn't delivered on anything. Morgan should probably actually go out and do some walking around the mansion grounds to see if it was possible to find some kind of something neat. It was a real shame. Morgan began slowly gathering all of the items on the blanket, trying not to be too disappointed, though it wasn't working too well. Perhaps next year, they should be able to actually find out something about this strange place. Morgan had played it too safe, and was paying for it. [77]

Millicent, however, didn't seem to notice that Morgan was disappointed over anything. She was paying more attention to Morgan than she had been, thankfully, however she was indeed still not paying as much attention as she would need to in order to begin picking up any kind of language, let alone the two that Morgan was hoping to work with her on. The young harachiu was, in fact, watching Morgan put away the things more closely than she was looking at Morgan's facial expressions or anything else, and of course she wasn't quite to the point of understanding Morgan's minute changes in voice due to emotional content of the messages. That was perhaps a very good thing, since Morgan was a temperamental individual with shifting emotions that often said and did things that they wished they didn't mean. The good thing was that Morgan was protective of their critters and family members, and that's what really counted at the heart to them.

Millicent didn't really have any opinions about Morgan at this point. Originally they had been a little bit bothered by the new area, but life was in some ways easier now. She was learning all sorts of things about new foods and situations, and it was nice to have someone around as much as Morgan was. However, she was also quite frustrated with her lack of free time that had been recent. It was a real shame, she thought, that she was no longer able to go anywhere without promptly being found and returned. She wasn't really in a cage of course; not at all, but she did wish that she wasn't so 'young'. It made individuals more protective of her than she would like; since people were protective of children. She did, despite her limited experiences, gather that from those experiences all of those years. Morgan was not changing that, it would seem.
