Morgan continued to run the houluh through the command the same repetitive way, as was how the training was typically done by Morgan when it came to creatures of most intelligence types. A command would be given, the creature would go out and get a random toy, and then Morgan would give him a lot of petting, praise, and a treat, and then would put up the toy. This happened until finally, finally there were no toys scattered about the park yard. Now, the creature would be forced to find a random thing and bring it to Morgan, and that was what they were waiting for. The command was given, and the houluh raced about, looking for toys. When he didn't find one, he found a pretty rock, and picked it up in his mouth to bring it to Morgan. Success! Morgan took the rock, and then gave the creature a lot of praise. This continued on for the next thirty minutes, when Morgan was finally sure that the command was down pat.
After finishing with the 'search' command, Morgan was pleased enough that it was time to move on. They had spent an inordinate amount of time about it, if only because Morgan had grossly overestimated the amount of repetition they would need to do before he would learn it well enough for them to move on. Morgan sighed a bit; but they still had three other things to work on today; and the next one was the 'hug' command. Surprisingly more complex than the 'kiss' command, somehow, but Morgan was sure that their houluh would be able to learn it just as quickly as he had the kiss command. Morgan did not at all enjoy training the kiss command because it was kind of gross, but the hug command shouldn't be so bad... It was just one of those things that would look more impressive than it actually was, perhaps. "Nico, ready for a new thing, boyo?"
Of course Nico was ready to learn, and Morgan was trying quite hard not to be too cutesy with him. He didn't need to be coddled, even if Morgan kinda wanted to. He was Morgan's pride and joy, not that Morgan would ever admit it. He was meticulously looked after, Morgan hated to be without him, anymore. He made them feel a bit more confident, for whatever reason. The Hug command would be simple; Morgan would simply get on their knees; and hold out their arms. Morgan did so, and then gently guided the Houluh up on his hind legs, and then with one front leg on one shoulder of Morgan's, and then the other on the other. Morgan then put their forehead to the houluh's forehead, in a moment of weakness, and it stuck. That would work quite nicely, and Morgan didn't technically... Hate it. "Good boyo, Nico!" Morgan said.
Morgan was sure to give the creature a lot of pettings on his head and ears, and then a piece of the jerky shreds, as well. "Yes, such a good boyo." Morgan said, gently petting his long rabbit-like ears. Morgan knew that this was only the start, however, and they had to keep working on this until Nico could do it himself. The bespectacled human put their arms out again, and then gently guided the houluh's paws into the correct position again. This time, Nico booped his forehead on Morgan's forehead gently, by himself. This was a very good sign; he was learning already. That was a very, very good thing. "Good boyo, Nico!" Morgan praised, and then gave him lots of petting and a piece of jerky. Morgan held out their arms again, and this time the houluh clumsily put his paws on their shoulders himself, and then booped his head to Morgan's forehead.
Morgan couldn't help but crack a smile about how easy this was for them thus far. Nico really was the fastest learner that the bespectacled human had ever seen. "Good boy!" Morgan said, excitedly. They gently petted the creature, and gave him another piece of jerky. It was all downhill from here, in a good way; it would be very simple to continue on with just repetition. Sure, Morgan thought that repetition was annoying, but they were very excited that it was going to be very calm from here on out, provided the creature shouldn't accidentally forget or change it or something. Morgan put their arms out again, and then Nico bounced up and put his front limbs in the correct places on Morgan's shoulders, and booped his forehead to Morgan's own forehead. "Good boyo!" Morgan said again, supplemented with lots of petting and a piece of jerky. Smooth sailing.
Repetition was by far the most annoying, but most important part. Morgan would continue to go over the command repeatedly, again and again, holding out their arms and then of course Nico was getting quite a bit better at it as time went on. Going from clumsily finding a way to put both of his front limbs on Morgan's shoulders to being able to make one smooth quick movement with minimal issues. Soon enough, he was even masking those minimal issues. Nico was a quick learner, and as they continued, he got more theatrical with it too. The houluh was a natural show-off; and it showed in his tricks the most. A half of an hour of repeating was worked through. The command would be given, the creature would put both of his paws on Morgan's shoulders, one a piece, and then he would boop his forehead to Morgan's forehead. Lots of repetition and treats with praise later, and Morgan was sure that Nico knew the command well enough.
Once Morgan was convinced that the houluh had managed 'hug', they were quite happy to note that there were very few tricks that would need to be taught from here on out. Perhaps they would think of some more before they were completely done with training? Training would always need to be refreshed, of course, but the basics would be done at that point. For now, however, they could move onto the basics of learning to dodge. Normally, Morgan would start out with the whole danger sensing thing that just about everyone taught their pit fighters, but hopefully the houluh would never really have to go to the pit or anywhere else like that. Naw, they could afford to work up to it with a much more useful 'dash' sort of dodge attack. It was really good for avoiding momentary stuff, which was hopefully all the houluh would need to self-defend.
That was the idea, Morgan told theirself. This was only for self-defense if absolutely required, and heck, maybe it would be good for agility competitions? That was a good idea, Morgan figured. Either way, Morgan didn't want to have to look after the houluh as much in dangerous situations as they had to during the quest that they had taken the other day. That was terrifying. "Nico, time to start on something new." Morgan said, and of course the houluh seemed super excited! The houluh's tail was thumping a mile a minute it would seem. Now this command would be needed over distances, Morgan figured. A whistled command seemed best, so Morgan took the time to decide one; and finally choose a very long loud whistle, that sounded like the 'start' ring for most races anyway. The houluh heard it and tilted his head, curiously, at this, Morgan ran, and the houluh followed them.
At this, Morgan proceeded to stop, and give the creature some small amount of praise to signal that this was what they wanted it to do, and then gave the creature a piece of jerky. The houluh at this point was incredibly used to the training repetition, so he was beginning to realize that once a new command was given, Morgan would show them what to do, and then if he repeated that, he would get treats and such. Morgan gave the command again, and this time only had to barely start running for Nico to break off in a quick burst of speed. Perfect, Morgan thought. At that, Morgan gave the creature a lot of petting, and some jerky. "Good boyo, Nico!" Morgan said, breaking another smile. Another couple of attempts, with the command, and then a start running- before Nico runs himself, and then some praise occurred.
Now, it was important that Morgan make the creature understand what the 'dash' needed to be for; and at that, Morgan decided that tossing small rocks would be a good idea again. At least it wouldn't cause too many issues with littering, since rocks were around anyway. Morgan sat down, to keep theirself from creating any confusing issues, and then whistled the command. The houluh danced a bit, looking just a little confused, and then took off running anyway. Good, good. "Good boyo, Nico!" Morgan called out excitedly, and then tossed the creature a piece of jerky for his trouble. Morgan ran the creature through this again a few more times, giving the command, and upon a successful 'dash', Morgan gave the creature a piece of jerky and lots of praise each time. Eventually, they managed to get the creature 'dashing' quite well. Now, onto the next phase, Morgan figured, onto phase two!
Morgan ran the creature through the command a couple of more times, complete with command, dashing, praise and treats. Each time, it was the same way, and each time Nico got more and more confident with it from what Morgan could tell, he was running faster. It was time for Morgan to change it up. Morgan called the command, and immediately threw a small pebble at the creature. The houluh was not expecting this at all; but thanks to Morgan not really trying to hit him, he was able to dodge it. Morgan didn't give him much time past a 'good job boyo' to really think about it, and instead spent the next half-hour really honing it, repeatedly giving the command and then throwing a pebble. At first, they didn't even try to hit him. Soon enough though, he was dashing away from rocks like a champ, following each and every command with the decorum that Morgan expected. Finally, after lots of repetition, Morgan was convinced that he knew how to dash away well enough.
Ah, the last thing that they were going to work on today. Sure, Morgan figured that judging by the sun, they had enough time to work on a few other things, but Morgan wasn't sure if they would have the stamina after this one to really work on them. The quest had been emotionally draining, and Morgan was trying to ease them into training, it was very important to not overdo it on the 'first day back'. Morgan didn't want to make Nico more stressed than he already had been, with Morgan just about to walk out of the door to go do that quest... Nico had clamped onto their pants leg and wouldn't let them go alone.
Now Morgan was going to do another bit of self-protection training; this time something that may help the creature lay up and heal from bleeding wounds. The 'lick wounds' command was absolutely tantamount for survival in the long run, even if the houluh probably wouldn't need it.
This might wind up being the easiest one yet; or the absolute hardest thing ever. It really depended on how willing Nico would be to lick himself properly. Morgan already knew how they were going to start this off; and they really, REALLY weren't looking forward to it. Morgan was a bit meticulous in a lot of ways, but Morgan was very not interested in getting sick; and that generally meant that they tried not to be touched by any sort of fluids. It was why it was so hard for Morgan to teach the 'kiss' command. However, this time, they were going to practice on them, and then move it to the houluh. Morgan gently scratched their arm, leaving a thin red line, that definitely wouldn't even leave a scar and didn't even hurt. Then, Morgan moved over to the houluh, and gave the command they had chosen, putting their arm under the houluh's face. The command was a simple one, "Nico, Cast."
Nico knew enough about the training to get the gist that this was a command, and that he needed to do something. However, he wasn't sure what that was until Morgan put their arm underneath his nose; the smell of blood made him know that it was some kind of wound, and his natural instincts said to staunch blood flow of a wound of himself. As far as Nico was concerned since the link, Morgan might as well have been an extension of himself. He gently began licking the arm, forgetting about the command. Morgan felt icky about it, but knew that this had to be done. "Good boyo, Nico!" Morgan said, trying not to grimace. Then they gave the creature lots of pets, and a piece of jerky. Nico knew that this meant that he had did what the command was supposed to be for; he could tell based off of the general training grind he was used to.
Morgan then held out their arm again, this time not right under his face. "Nico, Cast." Morgan commanded, and the creature immediately began licking Morgan's arm. It was pretty gross, but seeing how close that was and how quickly Nico seemed to get it, Morgan wanted to get the creature weaned off of licking their own arm as soon as possible! Even if they had to switch between the two for a while. Morgan gave the creature a lot of praise, and then petted his ears gently before giving him a piece of jerky. Morgan was glad that they worked training out quite quickly most of the time, at least. Morgan did not offer their own arm this time. "Nico, Cast!" Morgan said, and then waited. The houluh was looked at Morgan, waiting for the arm to be extended. Morgan shook their head. "Nico, Cast!" Morgan repeated. This time, Nico bent down and licked his own arm, experimentally.
Twilight-Claw: Lol, those puppies are comically cute in appearance! I feel like I might have seen them from somewhere else with their baby stage, but more because of their pudgy stage and short limbs. x3
