The creature had been surprisingly difficult to outsource, despite monetary willingness on the part of the moneyed human. Morgan had actually been attempting to source one of these rather normal-seeming creatures for much longer than they had finally decided to jump the gun to source tat-lungs. Tat-lungs had been a long-time goal, of course, but they took much more time and effort to care for than this simpler creature, and perhaps due to that; there were very few among the denizens of the city, and even less that could possibly be pried with funding of any amount.
Morgan was proud at each new acquisition, of course, especially the tat-lungs, because they were sure that they were adequately prepared and inclined well to care for such majestic beings. However, there was a sense of pride that may not normally be understood by others, as the bespectacled human carried their rather normal looking 'dog' to the park, beaming.

It was not common that the Labs produced a species that was, for all intents and purposes, nearly entirely harmless. Houluh was legitimately smallish, regular hound-dog like creatures, so much that Morgan had been shocked when they had been produced. However, only a few were ever sent out, so procuring one had been nearly impossible up to this point. Luckily, Morgan's calls in the paper had finally be answered, and now there was a smallish puppy, pale cream with black spots and brown points beneath it, sleeping within the basket. Morgan was thankful that houluh did not weigh much. The park visits were going to start becoming a daily occurrence for training and 'going out' for the young creature.
Perhaps having a 'pet' was not exactly the most technically important thing on Morgan's plate right now (they had many 'pets', most of which were not this sort of 'pet' in the slightest) but it was quite important to the human all the same.

Morgan finally finds a small suitable area; with a nice cherry park bench overlain with wrought iron. Morgan sits the wicker basket gently down on the park bench, and then digs around in their deep labcoat pocket, making sure that they had brought all of the needed supplies. The human places a box of galabex jerky treats on the park bench beside the wicker basket, as well as a few toys (frisbee, holey ball, tug of war rope) and finally, Morgan grasped a whistle for the training exercise. There it was! They knew that the creature was sleeping, and didn't really want to wake him up to pester him, but Morgan was quite pleased. The more tedious sorts of training should be simple with this creature. Houluh supposedly caught onto training and tricks quite easily, despite not really being suited for battle as much.
The idea of training a creature without battles in mind sounded very calming... Their eyes gleamed dimly, glowing soft green.

After making sure that everything was around that was absolutely required for training on this first day, Morgan finally bends down, feeling especially anxious suddenly; perhaps because this one reminds them of the midnight and russet female houluh that their father had as his companion- and breathes out a quick sigh. After closing their eyes and reopening them after a moment of gathering their-self, Morgan gently reached out with a trembling hand, and touched the silky cream fur of the houluh's exposed neck and front limbs. Tears threatened to spill behind their glasses for a moment; this was the last one of the species that their father had owned that they did not indeed, and Morgan felt... Perhaps a little closer to their dad for a moment.
The tiny creature rolled over onto it's back sleepily and gave a slight yawn. Morgan withdrew their hand sharply, as if they had been bitten.

Morgan felt their throat tighten for a moment, and their mouth dry. They had come to terms with the fact that they would probably never be able to get a hold of a Houluh; and would never really have that 'family dog' sort of feeling again, since their father had taken Spice with him when he disappeared. Morgan sorely missed their father, and also missed Spice; always protective of them and with the softest fur. Morgan took a moment to breath, trying not to think about this at all. After a moment's weakness, the bespectacled human felt more ready. They reached out again, and gently stroked the silky fur of the creature's ears, and then gently petted over the creature's little toe beans. It was and adorable puppy; Morgan fought horrid the urge to coo at it.
Had Morgan even thought of a name for it? Of course, it would be officially named in the way that most show creatures are named; but what of a call name?

Morgan finally leaned forward and gently woke the houluh puppy. "Nico, Nico, wake up." It was a short and simple name, befitting of a pet, a true pet, and not something that was sentient. With enough repetition, the name was going to be the first bit of training they did today. "Nico." Morgan said, almost a whisper. The creature finally rolled back over onto his belly, and then sat up, yawning and shaking his huge ears. "Rise and shine, Nico." Morgan said, and then they removed a piece of jerky from the box, the tiniest piece possible, and then waved it in front of the hound's snoot. The creature's eyes, colored like the richest dried jujubees, flew open as the creature stuck it's long pink tongue out and lapped up the jerky treat. It was a good thing that these were specifically formulated for carnivorous beasties.

Houluh supposedly were created 'in honor' of the supposed goddess 'Order'. This sounded like some bull to Morgan of course, but they could certainly see that the creatures had a sort of balance about them that was not really present in natural canids. It was difficult to put one's finger on, to be honest, but there was definitely something particularly calming about them. Perhaps that was why they picked up training so quickly, or so it was said along the street. Morgan let theirself have another moment of weakness, and they gently reached out to pet the creature's soft head, and gently touch both of his ears. Again, fighting that urge to dote on the creature was much more difficult than Morgan had thought. Morgan forced theirself to stop petting the creature, it needed to be trained. Focus. "Nico, come here boyo." Morgan said gently, petting their knee. The creature tilted his head, and then looked at Morgan with those reddish-brown eyes.

Morgan took out a piece of jerky and broke it into a smaller piece. "Hoi boyo, c'mere Nico." Morgan said, waving the jerky piece. "Nico." Morgan called, and of course, the creature scooted forward, still sleepily, but now paying much more attention. Morgan gave the houluh the jerky piece, and then gently petted his head again. Okay, Morgan was not used to giving this much positive reinforcement to creatures when training them, but perhaps, just perhaps, Morgan would allow theirself this weakness. Just this time. Petting the houluh was enjoyable; he was so softly furred. Nico took the jerky piece and wagged his tail, thumping it against the basket. Ah, so they did seem to begin to pick things up decently speedily. That was nice; coming off of working with the wiurn, and going into working with a creature like this was strange; very strange indeed. But nice, altogether.

Morgan couldn't really keep theirself from doting on the creature, it would seem. "You're a smart boyo, en't you? Nico." Morgan said, trying to reiterate that name again. The bespectacled human broke another piece of jerky off, small, very tiny, and then called out the name again. "Nico, good boyo, smart boyo, Nico." Morgan said, gently. "Nico." Repetition would always be the basis of all training, but with Nico, it seemed to be a little less annoying than it would be with creatures of lesser train-ability. The houluh wagged his tail again, thumping it against the wicker basked, and then stuffed his nose into Morgan's off hand, not the hand that was holding the jerky. Morgan used their off hand to pet the houluh's soft furry ears. "Yes, Nico." Morgan cooed, and then gave the piece of jerky to the houluh. He was doing a good job so far, Morgan thought.

Names, they were strange things. Typically given to you; the first thing given to you, something you can never really earn; something that follows you in some fashion whether it is not particularly wanted or not. Triumphing over the name in one way or another was a goal that some had in their lifetimes. Some names given with care, some with intention, and some rudely. Nico's name was just a short call-name, shortened from the more dignified name (if one could call them that) that show animals typically had to set them apart. However, it appeared to fit him very well.
Morgan continued repeating the name, and the houluh slowly began to respond to it more and more, with small snacks given to him interspersed with petting. Eventually, Morgan was convinced that the houluh knew his name, quite well in fact; just by the way his ears perked up cutely when he heard it. What a good boyo!

Now that the Houluh was currently awake, Morgan figured that they could move on to a few more of the really simple training bits and bobs that required the creature to be a bit more awake. "Are you ready to work on something else, Nico?" Morgan said, gently picking him up. He was not exactly the happiest about being picked up, and wriggled about, but Morgan simply put him down on the soft green grass, to make sure that he would not hurt himself jumping down by himself. Morgan had made sure to grab their whistle and some of the larger bits of treats, because the next few behaviors were going to be using the whistle. Simple commands for the small creature, that was the idea. Now would be the 'come' command. Morgan took a few steps away, and then bent down, holding out a tiny piece of jerky again.

Getting through these first few 'easier' commands was going to be tantamount to do as soon as possible; it would be better for both of them if they got this done and began working on more important tricks. Morgan put the whistle to their lips and called out a simple single tone, soft. It was a quick breath of air at most; and could hardly be heard because it was so high pitched. The houluh, however, immediately noticed it; lifting his huge ears up just slightly and then wagging his tail, good-naturedly and lowly as it took off toward Morgan. Well, that was pretty obvious, Morgan had done the best they could in order to get the creature's attention and make it want to come to them, seeing as the jerky piece was in full view of the critter. "Smart boyo, Nico." Morgan said, and then offered the jerky bit to the small pup.

Morgan petted the small houluh on his over-sized ears and the top of his head, trying to make sure that it knew that this behavior was good. There was no way that Morgan would take this creature home today without it being decently obedient. Most of Morgan's creatures had specific places where they lived; the vivariums, aviary, the Inn, etc. But this one, provided it was polite enough, would be given free reign of the house. Nico absolutely HAD to mind, no ifs ands or buts. Morgan had cleared their schedule today when they went to pick up the precious creature.
Morgan scooted way back again, held a piece of jerky out for the creature, and then gave the whistle command yet again. The houluh heard the high pitched noise yet again, and quickly rushed forward, ears flopping about, closing the distance between the two and taking the jerky piece. Morgan grinned; and then immediately hoped that no one was around.

Morgan quickly looked up, and around; checking for anyone that might have witnessed Morgan's tenderheartedness when it came to the small canid. Upon seeing no one around, the human pet the tiny creature atop his head, and then allowed theirself another soft praise. "Such a good boyo, Good boyo Nico." Said so quiet that perhaps only the houluh and the wind could have heard; perhaps the plush carpeting of grass at their feet. Morgan was proud when the creature turned it's head into their palm; it was a very dignified way of demanding pets. Morgan swallowed, trying not to think about Spice; but Nico really reminded them of Spice. Eventually, Morgan got back up, and scooted away again, making sure to be far enough away that the creature would have to come to them with the command.
Morgan called the command again on the whistle; and the houluh came running.
