Once the lamps were all off and the pair of them were in the darkness, Fiera put a piece of candy corn on her hand, out in the open. “Madison… echo!” She called, coming up with the new command word for this move for the candy corn bat. Madison looked around, chirruping nervously, but didn’t seem to get the idea, shuffling in place. “Madison, come!” Fiera called again. “Echo!” She was hoping that the bat would follow her voice to start with, and then she could just get quieter and quieter until Madison was forced to use her own sounds to navigate. She was already making a great deal of chirping noises after all, even if it was just out of nervousness. The treat was right there sitting in Fiera’s palm, too. Madison didn’t need to carry out any fancy tricks to be given it, she just had to find it in this darkness.

“Madison, come! Echo!” She tried again. She kept making noises like that, trying to coax Madison into coming over to her, giving the candy corn bat something to focus on. Eventually, she heard it- the distinct flapping of wings. Fiera couldn’t make her shape out, even with her feline eyes, but she could tell that Madison was at least trying to find her way over. “That’s it! Over here, Madison! Echo!” Madison made some squeaks in response, and Fiera waited patiently for her. It was dark after all, it would probably take a bit. Eventually, she landed on Fiera’s hand. As Madison licked the piece of candy off of the humanish’s palm, she marvelled over what a good start that was. It showed that Madison definitely could follow sounds in the dark- she just had to learn to follow her own, not Fiera’s. Then, she set Madison down, getting her back to square one for another try.

Fiera backed away, careful to not run into anything. It was easy in this darkness, after all. Then, she put another piece of candy corn in her hand- she was sure Madison could smell it from there. She wasn’t TOO far away, after all. “Madison, come here! Echo!” Fiera said, but quieter this time. When Madison took to the air, she stopped talking so much too. Sometimes Fiera would hum quietly or shuffle her feet against the mix of dirt and leaves, but overall she was trying to get Madison weaned off of her reliance on external sounds. To compensate, she could hear Madison squeaking more. Fiera wondered if she could even hear the extent of her squeaking- she had read once that the sounds that bats make extended outside of humans’ range of hearing. Even though Fiera was part cat, she had the feeling that that limit still applied.

Soon, Madison had made her way over to Fiera again, and her squeaking noises had been silenced by the copious amounts of candy she was shovelling into her face. Fiera tried not to giggle at the tickly sensation of her tongue on her hand. She didn’t want Madison to abandon her treat again. Once she was done, Fiera set the bat back down on the ground. She was really starting to get the hang of this! Fiera walked away, nearly running into a tree. She decided that she was fine where she was, no reason to wander around in the dark more. “Ok Madison, echo!” She ordered again, holding up another piece of candy corn. Fiera made even less sounds now, trying to breathe as quietly as possible. She heard Madison take off immediately, squeaking loudly. Her squeaks seemed more… rhythmic now too, as if she was really paying attention to what she was doing, as opposed to her haphazard efforts earlier.

Even sooner than before, Madison landed on Fiera’s hand, scarfing down the treat she was offered. “Good girl, Madison! Good echo!” Fiera praised, but Madison hardly seemed to need it. Soon, she leapt off on her own, exploring her area even with her blindfold on. Fiera fumbled in her pocket, trying to reload her treat. She opened the satchet. “Madison, echo!” She said as she fumbled around in the satchet for a treat. Before she could pull it out though, she heard a bevy of squeaks from her left side. Then, there was a rush of air past Fiera’s face, and the next thing she knew, where one moment there had been a piece of candy corn in her fingers, in the next there was nothing but thin air. She grinned. “Alright, that’s a bit of a show off’s move, but I’ll accept it. Good job, Madison.” She said… and then went to go find the lamps. She was tired of stubbing her toes.

With echolocation out of the way and down pat, Fiera knew they had only one trick left to learn, out of an originally massive list. She was very proud of her candy corn bat- they had come such a long way since earlier this morning! When they showed up in this clearing at the start, Madison didn’t even know her own name. They were just basic friends after exploring a cave- nothing to write home about. The candy corn bat was a completely blank slate. But now Madison not only knew her name, she knew a lot of tricks! And not just the basic tricks, but a bunch of really difficult things, too. She had a bunch of impressive abilities like danger sense, stone skin, and hardy under her belt. But she had a lot of dangerous battle moves down pat too- such as scratch, screech, and wing buff, all ready to use in battle.

It was another move like those that Fiera had left to teach her, something that hurt. Echolocation was good for pinning down foes that were just as fast as she was, but Madison needed something a bit more… brutal out of her sonic abilities. She knew a couple sound based moves by now (thanks to Fiera), like screech and echolocation. Neither of those were really capable of doing any damage, however. Instead, they helped maneuver her opponent into a more vulnerable state, but couldn’t do anything to actually hurt them. She needed a bit more variety in her weapons case, so to speak. She had wing buff to do damage, but you never knew what kind of opponents you’d come across- maybe she would fight a creature that was immune to wind damage, or weak to… uh… sound? Electric? Something like that. Fiera wasn’t really sure how to categorize ‘sonic waves’.

Still, sonic waves was the last thing on her list. It apparently utilized sound that was highly directed, in a very thin cone, so nothing outside of the cone could hear it- and was so loud it could blast apart a small enough object. Madison was loud, but Fiera never knew she was capable of being THAT loud- until she read about it, of course. Apparently that was just something she could do. If they could get this last move out of the way, they would be fully prepared for the tournament. Well… Fiera had some other things she could think of, but this was the point at which she’d call it quits. Her and Madison had been out here for what felt like days at this point, after all. But how would she teach it to her…? Fiera got out her bag of training tools again and started digging through it.

When she first got here, Fiera thought that she had brought way too much stuff. But now that they had been working a while, she felt like she had brought too little. Or more specifically, she had brought a lot, but a lot of it was absolutely useless. I mean really, why did she bring a traffic cone? She wasn’t teach Madison how to let people ride on her back. Maybe though… she could try the mesh cage again? She got it out, unfolding it. It was made of finely woven metal and had worked great for teaching Madison wing buff. With any luck, it would be strong enough to teach her a second move. Though that left the question of how to keep Madison from resorting to using wing buff again. Fiera needed to manipulate her into making sounds instead. The humanish looked through the bag again, still digging for tools.

Ah, that would do quite nicely, Fiera thought as she got out the object she was looking for. It was actually a harness or muzzle of sorts, the kind you’d put around the snout of a particularly aggressive pet to keep them from opening their mouths, while still letting them drink water and whatnot. But it was also just small enough to let Madison walk around with her wings and legs, while keeping her wings pinned down enough that there was no way she’d be able to take off with it on. It was just too awkward. The straps that were meant to go around the back of the regular pet’s head would be enough to wrap around her chest, holding it in place. Fiera turned to her pet, a wicked look in her eye. Madison wouldn’t like this… but that was pretty par for the course by this point.

The minute she started approaching Madison with the muzzle-cage, the candy corn bat knew something was up. It was probably the eerie grin on Fiera’s face that tipped her off. The bat screeched wildly as her owner tried wrestling her into the muzzle, but Fiera was fast enough to shove her in before she could do any real damage, strapping her up so she couldn’t get back out. Fiera could hear nothing but hisses and angry bat noises as she walked back over to the mesh cage. “I know you don’t like it! But this is the last one, I promise!” Fiera said, picking it up. At least it worked out in her favor if Madison was mad at her- the angrier she was, the more violent energy she had to take out on her targets. Fiera unzipped the mesh cage, filling it up with treats. Speaking of violent energy, it was time to get started.

Fiera set the cage in front of Madison, about two feet away, so she could see the treats inside it. “This should be familiar to you. It’s just like last time!” Fiera said, pointing at the cage. “Remember wing buff?” Madison started flapping her wings, or trying to even though they were held down by the muzzle. “Oh, uhm, no, don’t do that right now!” She said. “Try uh.. Oh, screech!” Madison let out a massive screech, making Fiera freeze up and pause for a moment. “Yeah, like that.” She said, once the ringing faded from her ears. “You gotta do it at the cage though. Ready? Sonic!” She said, picking out her command word and pointing at the cage. Madison’s ears were flattened to her head, but she still glanced at the cage. She opened her mouth as if screaming, and to Fiera it looked like nothing was happening…

But judging from how the mesh cage was reacting, something definitely was. It seemed to wobble a bit, like there was a breeze hitting it. Fiera bent down and sure enough, her ears were assaulted by one of the loudest noises she had ever heard, reverberating through the air. “Yikes.” She said, standing up. The ringing in her ears had returned in full force, and she flicked them to try and get some feeling back. “I mean, good job, Madison! Good sonic!” She said, trying to not seem too shaken. She set a single treat right in front of her pet for a job well done. Madison ate it, but didn’t seem too happy about the whole situation. Still, hopefully it was enough to encourage her to do it again, and even stronger next time. Once she was done eating, Fiera grinned. “Ok, you ready? Sonic, Madison!” She said, and pointed at the cage.

Madison opened her mouth again, and this time the cage toppled over backwards from the force, shaking the candy corn trove in there around. “Oops!” Fiera said, and went to pick it back up, while Madison was still screaming. She nearly immediately regretted it- it felt like her hands were being shaken apart! She cringed and recoiled, and went elsewhere to look for something to prop it up. She glanced back, and saw Madison staring at her. “Oh! Good job, good sonic!” Fiera said, still a bit shaken up, and tossed the candy corn bat her deserved treat. Madison chewed on it while Fiera looked for a rock. When she found one, she placed it inside the cage with the treats, to help hold it down. “There. That should be a bit more sturdy.” She said. “Ok, ready Madison? Sonic!” She said, pointing at the cage (hopefully) one last time.

This time, the blast was even louder than ever- or at least, Fiera was pretty sure it was. Because of the nature of sonic waves, Fiera couldn’t actually hear it from her vantage point, and she didn’t want to. Still, the cage looked like it was caught in a storm from how it was shaking and contorting, and Fiera’s eyebrows just about flew off her face when the whole top of it ripped off. Well. That was something she would have to replace. That proved that Madison knew what she was doing in Fiera’s books, though. The humanish went to untie her, showering the candy corn bat with praise. She set her down in her well deserved pile of treats and looked up at the sky. As expected, the sun was just starting to peek over the trees. Their long training session was finally over- though Fiera hoped that it would be enough.
