The moon was high in the sky as Fiera brought Lunara into the public park. She settled the pair of them down in a fenced off training area with dusty, packed earth. They had a lot of room to play around this way, and Fiera suspected that they’d probably need it. They had some very… nonstandard moves today, some things that only yumenokei could learn. It was absolutely freezing out, due to being both the middle of February and the middle of the night. As a result, Fiera was bundled up in as many pieces of winter weather gear as she could find in her closet. Lunara seemed fine with it though, peering up at the moon. Fiera supposed that life was nice for such an ethereal creature, free from many of the problems plaguing more physical creatures. She could touch Lunara, but only if the creature wanted her to- she doubted that cold could make a scratch on her. Fiera 6 Lunara 20.1/22.1 Travel By Moonlight 1

Coming out at this time was intentional, however. Yumenokei were nicknamed ‘moon rabbits’ for good reason, even though they didn’t look like traditional lagomorphs with their various masks and tendrils. They were instinctually linked to the moon and its phases, and Fiera knew that Lunara’s abilities would be strongest at night. With any luck, it would be easier to teach her her various light and darkness based abilities at night as well, especially when Fiera’s own mimicry of them was more visible. She had taught Lunara at least one light based move before, which she had dubbed ‘crescent of light’, but she knew that that wasn’t the only trick Lunara had in her theoretical box. It had been somewhat difficult to teach, but thankfully Lunara was a clever creature (in some ways more clever than Fiera). So long as Fiera was able to somewhat mimic what she wanted Lunara to do, the yumenokei was usually able to do it back at her.

For example she had used sparklers, the tiny handheld fireworks, to create a crescent shape in midair that Lunara mimicked to carry out ‘crescent of light’. The moon rabbit simply needed some guidance to get it done and figure out what she was supposed to do, but was otherwise quite smart. As a result, Fiera was hoping she’d pick up on this one rather quickly, even though it wasn’t… really something that Fiera could do herself. She had read that yumenokei were capable of a sort of teleportation, dubbed ‘travelling by moonlight’. Obviously, Fiera couldn’t teleport. That would be silly. But for Lunara it should be instinctual on some level, as it was a well recorded feature of yumenokei, conserved across all of the common breeds. Fiera only needed to encourage her to the point of reaching her full potential. To that goal, she had… some tools. Lunara probably wouldn’t like them, but if it worked, it worked.

To help Fiera out with training tonight, she had brought with her... well, a whole cooler full of mochi. The lid had a clasp that meant that Lunara couldn't get in on her own what with the lack of thumbs... hopefully. Frankly, she was a clever creature and Fiera didn't entirely trust her to be good. She'd just have to keep a close eye on it. Then, she had a large cage. It was the sort that you'd put dogs in for the night to keep them from wreaking havoc around the house when you weren't looking. Fiera had never needed it with Lunara, but the idea wasn't to put the rabbit in the cage- it was to keep her out of it. The bars were just close enough together that Fiera knew that the yumenokei wouldn't be able to slip her paws between them to take the mochi she was going to put inside.

First, Fiera let Lunara investigate the cage, putting in a small chunk of the treat to lure her in. She immediately hopped over and began munching on it, familiarizing herself with the area. Fiera had read that travelling by moonlight only worked if the pet in question had been to that location before. As a result, she couldn’t expect Lunara to teleport inside the cage unless she had been in it once already. Once she was done Lunara sat there for a while, soaking in the moon beams until she got bored. She crept out after that, allowing Fiera to rush over and get the cage properly set up for the trick. Lunara looked curiously over Fiera’s shoulder as she worked on arranging the mochi inside the cage. Hopefully she’d figure it out fast, before the ice cream melted. Then she backed away, latching the cage door shut behind her. Fiera 10 Lunara 21.0/23.0 Travel By Moonlight 5

“Ok Lunara… blip!” She said, pointing at the cage and establishing the command for this particular move. Lunara tilted her head at Fiera before looking back at the cage. She hopped up to it before gently pawing at the metal bars, clearly longing for the mochi within. “Go on, blip!” Fiera repeated as if that would help. The yumenokei almost didn’t seem to hear it, getting more riled up at the task in front of her. Lunara continued to push and shove at it, sometimes quite forcefully, but the cage bars refused to budge, and the cage itself proved too heavy for her to push over. Fiera supposed that ethereal creatures weren’t really known for their prodigious physical strength. She thumped her feet on the ground as her tendrils writhed, clearly frustrated. Perhaps… she needed a hint Fiera realized, and began digging through her training bag for a particular tool.

Finding it, the humanish clicked the flashlight on. Lunara glanced over at her due to the sudden light, but Fiera let it sweep across the ground until it pointed at the mochi. “Lunara, blip!” She reiterated, flashing the light a couple times for emphasis. Finally, Lunara got down off of the cage and slunk to the ground, tracing the path of the light into the cage. Fiera held her breath. Lunara was a clever girl- hopefully she’d figure this out. The yumenokei paced a few feet away from the cage before crouching down, as if focusing. Fiera clicked the light off as she watched...something weird happen. It was almost as if the light of the moon was growing brighter around Lunara, until it was clear that it wasn’t the moon at all. She really was starting to glow, brighter and brighter… before fading away, like mist. Fiera was completely gobsmacked.

Then, before Fiera could begin to panic, a glowing shape began to form inside the cage. It was soft like moonlight, and slowly bloomed like a flower, increasing in size and capacity before forming into the shape of a yumenokei. It faded away and Lunara drifted to the ground like a leaf from a tree. She stood there for a moment, as if stunned, and then shook her head like she was shaking off water, sending little motes of light flying away. Fiera stood there stunned for a moment, but then erupted in cheers. “Good GIRL, Lunara! Good blip!” She called, and Lunara trotted around inside the cage for a bit, seemingly quite pleased with herself. Soon she realized that she was also in with the mochi now as well, and didn’t hesitate to dig into it as Fiera continued to praise her. That was, by far, the coolest thing that Fiera had ever seen.

Now all she had to do was figure out how to get her back out again. She didn’t want to lure her with mochi again- she wanted to be sure that Lunara knew the command. Once Lunara was finished eating, Fiera pointed to a spot right next to her. “Lunara, come here!” She said, starting with a command that Lunara already knew. When Lunara only pawed at the cage, as if saying “Well how do you expect me to do that?” Fiera pointed again and said “Blip!” Lunara stopped pawing and paused for a moment, as if focusing. Then, the distinctive glow started up again, and got brighter before Lunara faded out of sight. Fiera tried to hold still as she waited for Lunara to reappear again, not wanting to move into the spot where she was going to teleport. She had no clue what would happen if she did that.

Soon, the blossoming, faint glow appeared next to Fiera, forming into the shape of a rabbit before fading away. Lunara looked up at Fiera from her new spot on the ground, and Fiera could have almost squealed with excitement. She didn’t, but came pretty close as she fell upon her pet to praise her. “You did it, Lunara! Good blip, you’re so good!” She said, before running over to the cooler to dig around in it for more mochi. She turned around to call Lunara over- only to find that she had teleported to her already. “Oh, you’re going to be using that a lot now, aren’t you.” Fiera said slyly, but still handed the rabbit her mochi. They did it a few more times after that, but it was less for training and more for fun. WIth such a good new ability in Lunara’s tool belt, how could they not play around with it?

Fiera and Lunara played for a long while, letting Lunara have fun with her ‘travel by moonlight’ power. The pair couldn’t play around with Lunara’s newfound teleportation abilities forever, though. Unfortunately, there was still more that Fiera aimed to teach her today. There were only a few things on her list for tonight, but they were all a lot more difficult than your standard obedience tricks. This was hard stuff they were working through, and Fiera wasn’t really suited to teaching all of it. After all, she was only human- er, near human. Magic abilities were still a bit out of her wheelhouse. Still, she let Lunara keep enjoying herself while she got the supplies for the next move to be taught out. As she got out the various supplies, she thought about her methods. This one was also going to be tricky to teach, but she’d do her best.

The next move was dubbed ‘moonlight’ in similar fashion to the last move that Lunara learned. It involved creating a ball of light, which was doable. The fact that it was already night time and with a clear sky helped greatly. Lunara was also already somewhat acclimated to creating shapes made out of light, such as in ‘Crescent of Light’. Heck, she had already figured out how to turn herself INTO a ball of light- could this really be so hard? Well… it might be. Because the second part of this trick was using that light to parasitize other creatures, draining them of their life force. Obviously, Fiera didn’t feel comfortable subjecting a real creature to that, and she wasn’t about to line up to be a testing dummy herself considering what it entailed. So she had found an unorthodox, but hopefully functional solution, which she now pulled out of her bag.

Lunara watched curiously as Fiera slapped a potted plant down in front of her. She had a few others just to be sure, but this was a good place to start. It was just your basic plant, short and squat with plenty of leafy stems poking off of it and proportionally broad leaves. All descriptions of Moonlight that Fiera had read described it as draining the life from things, but it never said that the living thing in question HAD to be an animal. So if Fiera could avoid hurting anything, she would. Not to mention, the shrivelling of the plant would be a good indicator as to whether or not the move was working. Lunara immediately stuck her face in it, sniffing loudly. That was good- it was best to let her get acclimated to her target before they began. Fiera had plenty of mochi on hand as encouragement, however.

Fiera lead Lunara over to the plant, gently guiding her. Then, she pointed at it and said “Moonlight.”. Obviously, the yumenokei didn’t understand. To try and encourage her to perform the move, Fiera held up her other training tool -a wrinkled, withered leaf, dull and near grey in color. She had picked it up at the same store she had bought the other plant in, and the only noticeable difference between the two kinds of leaves was the state of life they were in. Then, while Lunara was looking at the leaf (or “looking”, considering that she did not have eyes, a trait all yumenokei shared..), Fiera turned the flashlight back on on a low setting and turned it toward the living plant. The light swept up the ground before finally illuminating it, albeit in a feeble fashion, more similar to the beams coming from the moon than anything artificial.

The weak light lit it up with a soft, eerie glow, a far cry from the highest setting on the flashlight. Hopefully, the two effects would give a suggestion to Lunara that she needed to make a glow that would reduce the leaves of the plant to the same state as the leaf that her owner had shown her. Fiera waved the dead leaf around. “Moonlight?” She requested again awkwardly. Lunara tilted her head with confusion, but still hopped toward the plant. She looked between her owner, the leaf and the plant, as if trying to put two and two together. Fiera knew that Lunara was clever- but was she clever enough for this? Regardless, she soon turned to the plant and pressed her ears back flat against her head, sitting up on her haunches as if focusing heavily. Fiera held her breath, waiting to see if something would happen.
