Fiera let Red run around for a bit after that, allowing the houluh to get some energy out. These tricks were pretty restrictive sometimes, and she didn’t want him losing patience halfway through learning one. It was useful to let him burn off some energy. He tore around the training grounds, sending up clods of half frozen dirt as he went, his tongue lolling from his mouth cutely. Sometimes he’d even leap up in the air, yapping loudly. Occasionally Fiera would run with him and order him to follow, or stand somewhere or ask him to come, just to practice those tricks, but for the most part she let him do what he wanted. After nearly ten minutes of that though, Fiera decided it was time to move on to the next trick. He had had his fun- now Red needed to focus. She told him to come, and Red came racing over.

He circled around Fiera as she approached the training bag, still trying to decide on what trick to teach him. He stuck his head through her legs and ran into her as he went, trying to encourage her to play with him. It was cute yes, but honestly pretty annoying as well. Fiera was just trying to get to her backpack, but instead she was forced to focus on not tripping over the houluh and hurting him, or worse, hurting herself. She just needed him to m- ah. Well, she supposed that made the decision for her on what trick to teach next. Fiera stood in place now, after deciding that she didn’t need her training bag after all. She could teach ‘move’ as is. I mean really, how hard could it be to tell your pet to shove off? Other than the difficulty in seeing sad puppy faces, of course.

“Red, move.” Fiera ordered as Red threw himself directly in front of her legs again. The houluh looked at her with confusion, not recognizing the command. Instead, he just doubled back in front of Fiera. The humanish sighed and leaned down, gently placing one hand on the side of the houluh. “Sorry, buddy.” She said quietly, and gently shoved him out of the way. “Move.” She said as she did so, causing him to stumble before correcting his balance about a foot and half away from her. He looked even more confused though, but Fiera wasn’t going to let him stay that way for long. She pulled out a treat and tossed it to him- where he was of course, not directly in front of her again. “Good move, Red! Good boy!” She said as he noticed the tasty treat. He might be confused now, but he wasn’t about to turn down free food.

With Red distracted, Fiera decided to start walking again. The houluh noticed her trying to ‘escape’ however, and ran after her, eager to continue what he thought was some sort of game. Fiera sighed as he caught up and started dancing around her again. If she didn’t know better, she would think he was doing it on purpose. “Red, move.” She said, and he looked up at her. In his defense, he did stop his distracting movements, but he did so right in front of Fiera. Better, but not good. She leaned down and gently move him over again. “Move.” She repeated, getting the houluh to go over a couple feet. He seemed better prepared this time, and barely even stumbled this time, as if he was expecting it. When she let go, he even took a few more steps away- a sign of progress. Fiera was happy to reward him for it, tossing the houluh another treat. “Good move, Red.” She said.

Fiera didn’t stay stopped for too long though, as she was determined to get some kind of walk in today. Red didn’t seem to want to hesitate either, and the humanish internally groaned as he caught up with her one more time. Fiera nearly fell over herself as she stumbled, trying not to trip over the houluh. She had managed to not kick him- yet- but he REALLY needed to figure this trick out soon. “Red, move!” She said, and the houluh stopped… and then shuffled out of the way a few feet, closer to Fiera’s side instead of in front of her. The humanish sighed with relief. Finally, he had figured it out. “Good boy, Red.” She said appreciatively. To his benefit, he had learned how to not get kicked, and to hers, she wouldn’t have to worry about accidentally kicking him in the future. A win win for both of them.

After teaching Red a move that was, essentially ‘please move, I don’t want to kick you on accident’, Fiera was feeling a little worn out. She knew she couldn’t stop now though, not when Red was doing so well with learning. They were on a roll with training so far, and Fiera was determined to keep that streak up, no matter how tired she was. Fiera was many things, but a quitter wasn’t one of them. No matter how much other people wished she WOULD quit already. She only had two tricks left, too- how long could it possibly take her to teach them? Not long at all, if she had anything to say about it. Red trotted up next to her, as if he knew what was coming already. Fiera already had his next trick in mind- she just had to get the materials for it up and ready.

Fiera couldn’t say that a folding chair was the WEIRDEST training tool she had brought to the public park yet, but it was certainly one that turned heads on the way here. Or it would have, if anyone else was here- it was awfully cold today, after all. Still, if she was going to teach ‘Off’, she needed to have something that Red could… get on to start with. It was big enough that it was easy enough for him to get his paws up, but small enough that it wasn’t really comfortable to balance on, which would make it easier for Fiera to shoo him off of it again. The houluh watched her curiously as she unfolded it. It made a brief squeaking noise, stiff due to the cold, but she managed to wrestle the chair open, setting it down on the ground and pushing it down into the dirt to make it harder to knock over.

Then, she held up a treat for Red. His ears perked at the sight of it, and she placed it on the seat of the chair. The houluh looked at her, and then the chair, and without any orders telling him otherwise, walked over to investigate it. He wasn’t quite tall enough to get his snout over the seat of the chair on its own, so he reared up and put his paws on it instead, leaning over to sniff the treat some more. Perfect. “Red, no!” She said, and his head immediately perked up. He whined and leaned away from the treat, obeying her order, but didn’t step down. She approached him and gently took hold of his paws. “Red, off.” She said, picking them up and putting them back on the ground. She was quietly grateful for her gloves, as his paws were covered in sticky mud. Eugh.

Once he was down though, she praised him. “Good off, Red!” She cooed, and swiped the treat off of the top of the chair, offering it to him. His distress at being moved was immediately forgotten at the sight of food, and he was fast to take and eat it. While he did that, Fiera replaced the treat on the chair with another one, eager to keep it going. Red was fast to notice her doing that, too. The second he finished chewing, his nose popped up above the chair again, sniffing loudly. Once more, he put his paws up on the chair’s edge. Fiera was waiting for that, and was quick to respond. “Red, off.” She ordered, repeating the command from earlier. Red’s feet shuffled, and he resisted the treat’s siren call, but he didn’t seem to understand that he needed to get down when she gave that command quite yet.

Fiera was happy to help him out though, and gently took hold of his paws. “Red, off.” She said as she placed the houluh back on the ground, making she he was balanced before she moved again. She took the treat again and gave it to him, again hammering in the idea of this trick. Get off the thing, get the treat. Stay on the thing, no treat. Easy peasy. He ate it happily, and watched as Fiera put another treat back again. Looking between her and the treat, he hesitantly got back up on the chair again. “Red, no.” Fiera ordered, hopefully for the last time- and she was right. Red read her command loud and clear, and immediately took his paws off of the chair, returning to the ground only a little clumsily. His sense of grace might not be the best, but Red’s understanding of his tricks was A+.

With ‘off’ out of the way, Fiera and Red had only one trick left to teach. Fiera was surprised and a little disappointed. The time had absolutely flown by. While Red didn’t pay attention all the time, there was nary a young creature that did. The pretty orange houluh had proved an excellent student so far though, and had quickly burned through the trick list. Fiera would be a little sad to see him go, to be honest. Her own pets were rarely this good at learning, and never as patient. Perhaps she could talk Jack into a breeding with him later. At least that way she’d get one of his offspring, and hopefully part of his appealing attitude along with them. For that to happen though, he’d have to be ready for his debutante show first, so Fiera realized that she had better hurry up and teach him the last trick!

The only one left on the list was thankfully a very easy one. ‘Lay Down’ was a trick so simple that even a child could teach it, and it had been a long time since Fiera was a child. It was pretty much ‘sit’, but closer to the ground. Red would probably be used to it too, seeing as Fiera had used similar techniques to teach him ‘Off’ and ‘Sit’, and was used to her pushing him around (gently) by this point. She’d just be handling different parts of his body. Fiera checked her pockets- she had just enough treats left to teach him this, too! Looked like she wouldn’t have to open a new packet today. With that out of the way, she called Red over. The houluh trotted up to her happily, and Fiera cracked her knuckles, ready to begin. “You ready, Red?” She asked rhetorically. The houluh merely replied with a wag of his tail.

While he was standing, Fiera kneeled down. Thankfully the dirt in this area was drier than some other parts of the training grounds, so she wouldn’t have to worry about muddy knees. Then she placed one hand on Red’s hips and the other on his shoulders. “Ok Red, lay down!” She said cheerily, and began to apply pressure on the two girdles. Red’s legs trembled, but he didn’t go down, even as she pushed down harder and harder. “Come on! It’s ok, lay down!” Fiera said again, and kept on pushing. Eventually, Red sunk into a sitting position, but Fiera kept pushing at his shoulders. “Keep going!” She said, and with her other hand pulled his legs out until he was in a forced laying position. “That’s it! Good lay down, Red!” She said, and offered him a treat. Red’s tail started wagging up a storm, and he stood up again to take it from her.

Red standing up on his own provided a useful reset for the trick, and Fiera was quick to go back to her earlier position. The more repetitions they could get in, the better. “Ok, lay down!” She repeated, and started pressing down on him again. Red whined with discomfort, and she could see his legs trying to keep up. He sank down faster this time, and even skipped sitting down first, sinking directly into laying down, albeit a little awkwardly. “Good lay down!” Fiera said, and fed him another treat. He ate it from the ground this time, looking at her plaintively as he chewed. “Oh, you’re fine.” She teased, and nudged his side gently. “Let’s try it again! Come on, move!” She said, and Red begrudgingly obeyed the order, standing back up and stretching. Now that they had practiced a couple times, Fiera wanted to try it without using her hands.

Once Red was steady, she gave the command again. “Lay down!” She said, and Red looked at her. He sighed, and then slowly dropped his hips until he was sitting. “Lay doooown.” Fiera encouraged, and he sunk lower and lower until he was finally in a laying position, albeit a dramatic one. “Good job, Red!” She cried. “What a good boy!” Red wagged his tail despite himself, thumping it against the ground. When she help up a treat though, he practically leapt off the ground, lunging for it. After he ate, she tried it one more time and he was down on the ground quicker than ever before, with nearly no hesitation. Fiera sighed with relief- they were done! She would be sad to see Red go, but it was always an interesting experience to work with a pet that wasn’t hers. Passing this particular torch wasn’t quite goodbye- she was hoping it would just be a ‘see you later’.
