She heard some noise, echoing through the halls. Fiera couldn’t quite place it, but it resembled a loud squeal, like the kind that an unoiled door would make after being opened for the first time in a decade. Or, she supposed, the kind of sound a terrified animal would make when it was finally caught. She paused... and kept walking. Best not to think about it. After all, it hadn’t seemed to have affected anything as far as she could tell, as the hall looked and acted the exact same as before. If it was a creature in pain, she couldn’t exactly help it from here anyway. It would just have to figure it’s own problems put. Escobar’s behavior implied that it was nothing, too. The elemental golem seedling hadn’t responded in the slightest to the sound, and was calm and still in her arms.

If Escobar wasn’t registering anything as a threat, then Fiera wouldn’t either. Although...he WAS getting a little bit heavy in her arms. Had he gotten bigger, somehow? She set him down and looked carefully. He had been about the size of a softball when she had walked in. And now sure enough, he was near basketball sized. She had read about this. Elemental golems grew slowly over time, depending on how much time you spent with them. Once they had gathered enough energy, they transformed into a bigger, more dexterous form. And judging from Escobar’s appearance, he was fit to pop. She cringed- that wasn’t actually great, or at least not right now. She didn’t need to deal with him transforming AND deal with the spooky murder mansion at the same time. She had to find a way out of here before he started changing.

She scooped Escobar back up into her arms- oh yeah, he was definitely heavier than before. She needed to get him home as soon as possible. The earth golem didn’t act any differently so far though, just absent mindedly waving his tentacles around like before. She kept on trekking, looking back and forth down the hall for any sign of a door. The threadbare carpet lining the endless hallway muffled her fashionable boot covered footsteps slightly, making the faint thud thud thud of her footsteps the only sound in the hall. The silence would have been maddening were it not for the fact that Fiera was quietly mumbling under her breath about goodness knew what. Probably a continuous stream of insults directed toward the mansion, or complaints about how these things kept happening to her. Anything, really. At least her golem seemed to be taking it all in stride.

Eventually, Fiera could scream with frustration. It felt like she wasn’t going anywhere at all! She had been walking for what, half an hour? Three quarters of an hour, a full hour, two? Her phone wasn’t turning on for whatever reason (of course), and her wrist watch had stopped. Even if they had been working, she was sure this building would find some other dumb way to screw them up. At least they stayed intact like this. Regardless of how long she had been walking, the fogged over sun hadn’t appeared to have sunk any more, and she CERTAINLY couldn’t find any doors. She had to try something else. Fiera looked out the window. It LOOKED like it was far up, but she fallen a tree’s distance before and been fine, and this was only a little further than that. She had additional reasons too.

For example, she knew she had come in through the front door and not gone up any stairs. Fiera was also aware of the fact that the mansion adored illusions. As a result, there was a very real chance that she wasn’t high up at all- it just LOOKED like that while she had been running in what was probably circles in an actually quite short hallway. She cracked the window, and mist swirled in. She gulped, and quickly took off her backpack to put Escobar in it. No use in him getting hurt too... not that her plan was wrong. Of course not. She climbed up onto the window sill, sitting there like the cats she so resembled. Finally, she stuck one leg out, then the other... and jumped, moving herself instinctually to land on her feet. The fall didn’t take long at all however, and she hit what felt like wood a lot faster than she thought. She opened her eyes... and found herself back on the front doorstep of the mansion.

Fiera was absolutely furious. Really? All that effort just to be dumped right back where she started? What a waste! She could have ripped her hair out, but decided to go home for a bit to cool off instead. She dragged Escobar back to the kennels with her and sure enough, the minute she set him back with the other golems in the kennel his body rippled and changed, transforming into his leggier “walker” stage right there in the room. Fiera was surprised- she knew the mansion was magical, but she didn’t think it would make him change THAT fast. She wondered... and then grabbed a different pet to bring back with her to the mansion. Victor was a lot bigger than the earth elemental golem, but just as calm. Calculating. She trusted him less than his littermate, Fern, but still brought him back to the mansion with her.

The rakai sarane was large, coming up to Fiera’s hip at the shoulder. He was an intimidating sight, covered in spikes, scales, and shaggy fur. Blue, ethereal flames along his back were cool to the touch, and Fiera couldn’t help but flick her fingers through them harmlessly. It wasn’t like he could feel it after all. However, it wasn’t his fearsome and mysterious appearance that had led her to bring him here. Fiera had long since heard that the mansion was magical, and thus possessing several magical items. Fiera definitely wanted to find some of those, and maybe her pet could help her with that. Arcane rakai sarane were known for their magical abilities, even able to cast real spells, and she knew that rakai sarane had powerful senses of smell. Could he possibly sniff out a magic item for her? She was certainly hoping for it.

Even if it didn’t work out like she hoped though- whether he couldn’t find magical items or just didn’t want to- she also wanted this could be something of a bonding session between the two of them. She hasn’t spent a lot of time with her rakai sarane, with the exception of Fern, her Fel. Still, she saw a lot of potential in them, either as companion or battle pets. Getting to know Victor today couldn’t hurt, at least. He seemed rather... standoffish. Independent. Getting him to be more on her side was a good idea, and what a better way to do that then by bringing him to a dark, spooky mansion! ...Ok, maybe this plan hadn’t been her best after all. But Fiera was far too stubborn a person to stop now, not after she had dragged this pup all the way out here.

Besides, they had already passed through the eccentric’s mansion’s squeaking gates and into the front yard. She definitely wanted to stay in the yard this time. It always seemed like every time she came here, something chased her into the mansion, where she’d inevitably get trapped. It had happened twice, and not just in this month either. It was almost like the mansion was trying to hide something from her out here... or trying to herd her toward something in there. Either way, she definitely wanted to go against the grain. Whatever secrets the mansion held, she was determined to dig them out this month, whether it liked it or not. With Victor’s help, of course. She had him leashes currently, and was struggling to keep up with his rapid pace, sniffing along the bare dirt trail. Maybe she should have trained him a bit first.

Just then however, something Fiera opted to take as a good sign rolled into view. She was currently on the path in front of the mansion, with skeletal, barren trees on either side of her. To her left however, she saw a bit of movement where Victor remained nonplussed. She kept a hold of his leash, dragging the rakai to a stop, and crouched down by the bushes. Sure enough, there was another one of those jarred shadows, which she rolled around in her palm for a minute before placing it with its fellow. Next to it however, was another bottled spirit- and not the alcoholic type. She lifted it up, holding it so Victor could sniff as well. It seemed to emit fog, rolling off the sphere harmlessly, but she could see another similar shadowy creature inside. She tapped it- the glass seemed sturdy enough, so she popped it in her bag with the rest of her findings.

A single brown leaf flutters down from wherever wax leaves originate from.

As if confirming the message she thought the shadow critters were putting across, another one of those wax leaves fluttered down, landing right on Victor’s face. He sneezed and shook his head in that way that large dogs do, and Fiera was quick to snatch it up while he recovered. She turned it over- brown like the last one, clearly fake and... She turned around, looking at the trees, with no apparent place it came from. Strange, but not bad. She’d take it, she decided, and filed it into her bag with the other. Then, she picked Victor’s leash up, who was still sniffling from the leaf assault. Once she was sure he was feeling better, she began walking again, with her rakai quickly catching up to and overtaking her as they walked. Before she knew it, she was being practically dragged down the path once more.

Victor hardly gave Fiera the opportunity to take in the scenery, let alone keep a good grip on the leash. When she saw a fork in the dirt road up ahead, it took all of her strength to yank her rakai toward it. She didn’t want to go toward the mansion this time around, after all. She wanted to see what the grounds had in store. Victor growled and scrabbled his feet, but eventually turned, heading in that direction instead. Fiera sighed with relief. It would probably be easier to just sit on him and let him carry her the rest of the way... though that would probably end in tears. As they walked and dragged themselves along, the environment around them started changing too. Must crept in along the trees, and the embankment around them steepened, carrying the trees above their heads as opposed to on either side.

Despite Fiera wandering aimlessly, at least Victor had some sort of idea where they were going, sniffing loudly at the ground as if tracking something. Fiera was happy to let him go at it, examining the scenery instead. Despite the most, the Moon was high... in the... Fiera nearly tripped with the realization. It was the middle of the day when she came in! What happened! She guessed it was an illusory “curtain” pulled over the sky around the mansion, because the sun sure as anything hadn’t set in the last ten minutes. While the sky was unusual however, the ground around her was about as expected. The path was surrounded by steep banks, but still wide. The roots of the trees jutted from the walls, like reaching hands. Fiera shuddered, remembering her related experience with hands reaching from dirt earlier that same morning. She was pretty sure Victor could take them though.
