Nerius shut the door behind him, he'd rather be done with that, thank you, and deliberately turned his attention to the kitchen. It had an older feel, he didn't immediately spot a fridge even, but it was elegant as the rest of the Mansion, with marble countertops and a crystal chandelier. The counters themselves were covered with flowers and snacks, and other festive decor.
And food. Astrid let out a loud "HONK" as she spotted a platter of meat and cheese, attempting to wiggle out of Nerius' arms and hop onto the counter. If she was snacking, he'd be free to explore the rest of the kitchen. Also he was looking for snacks himself, so he really couldn't judge. He could already see a variety of food, but was there any chocolate? There was a jar of candies not far from where he was standing, Nerius opened it, and sampled one. Caramels, not chocolate, but still tasty.

Nerius picked up the jar, grabbing another candy before putting it in his pack, and continuing to look around. There were a lot of flowers, but one bouquet stood out, most were roses, but this one contained lavender in a few different shades, a card nestled in the blooms. Worth keeping maybe? It was hard to tell with the Mansion sometimes.
His search was interrupted by another loud "HONK" from Astrid, a black bird had landed too close to her food, and she wasn't about to share. It fluttered off, startled, coming to land on a picture frame next to Nerius. "Hello," he greeted the bird, which was oddly unafraid of him. It hopped toward him in response, offering him a small rose. "..Thank you?" It was odd, but with the day he'd had, he wasn't about to question it. In any case, the bird seemed to have taken a liking to him.

It also gave Nerius a chance to look at the frame better, it was very elegant, though oddly lacking a picture within. He'd take it with him, it was the first thing other than the crystals that had really caught his eye. Well, everything in 'that room' had caught his eye, but not like this. New bird friend in tow, Nerius continued his search of the kitchen.
At first, the large round box didn't draw his eye, then he remembered what the locals like to put in those this time of year. Was that.. chocolate?
Yes, yes it was! Nerius made a happy little noise at his discovery, enough to draw the tailypo's attention. Not seeing anything threatening, or more interesting than her own snack, Astrid quickly went back to devouring the meat and cheese platter. It really was nice that they had different tastes in food. Nerius examined the chocolates in the box for a moment, before choosing one of the colorful ones to eat.

The chocolate was delicious, and Nerius ate a few more, before deciding to carry the box around with him as he investigated the rest of the kitchen. it wasn't long before he picked up the distinctive thrum of magic, not as strong as last time, but there was clearly a crystal somewhere in the room. He followed the magic, only to end up in front of another box of chocolate.
Nerius opened the box, and sure enough, nestled in with all the chocolates, was a remnant crystal. Best combination ever. The crystal wasn't for eating though, and he put it with the other two, trying not to think about where he'd found those.
He looked up to the rustle of wings, there was another bird, and it had flown over to the first, chirping at the other in what seemed to be a friendly way. Nerius wasn't sure why there were birds in here, and glancing over at the still snacking tailypo, just hoped Astrid wouldn't try to eat them.

She'd gone after birds before, Nerius had to keep the odd kitten away from just about everything small or she would try to eat it, but with any luck Astrid would be satisfied by the platter, at least for the time being. If she wasn't, there wasn't a whole lot he could do, the birds could at least fly away, but that would probably scare them off.
In addition to the crystal, chocolate, and bird, there was also an entire bouquet of purple glass roses. He'd seen the occasional glass flower in with the regular, but this was the first time he'd seen one entirely of glass. Well, almost entirely of glass, there was a bit of lavender in there as well, though it clearly wasn't the main focus of the arrangement. Not that Nerius knew anything about arranging flowers, really. He'd de-arrange them though, taking along both the glass and natural flowers.

[33] They weren’t the easiest thing to carry with him, Nerius had to admit. Glass was a fragile material, especially in such thin pieces as the petals were, though it was possible they were magically protected to keep from breaking as easily. He wasn’t about to test this by just shoving them in his pack and hoping for the best, he didn’t want to risk loosing them, or worse, ending up with a backpack full of broken glass. It wasn’t the first time he’d found fragile items in the Mansion, and he’d brought along old scrap cloth for this very reason. He could use the scarf to wrap up the roses too if necessary, but would rather keep that to bundle up Astrid on the way home. It had been a pain to get her bundled up for the trip out, but hopefully she would be less energetic after all the snacks she’d had here.

[34] Astrid was making good progress on the meat and cheese platter; Nerius still couldn’t help but be amazed at the tailypo’s ability to consume food. And maybe a little jealous too, he couldn’t eat twice his body mass in chocolate. Okay, that was probably for the best, he tended not to do anything in “moderation” well. Indeed, he’d already eaten six of the chocolates out of the first box, munching away as he went back to searching the room. If anywhere was a likely place to find food, this was it. The dining room he'd found earlier might have been empty, but the kitchen sure wasn't. If it had been a normal house, Nerius would have thought the meal just hadn't been served yet, but he doubted that was how it worked with the Mansion. As far as he could tell, everything here was created magically, or maybe conjured, but not created manually.

Speaking of 'not doing moderation well', Nerius had just spotted a tower of pastries. Not all of them were chocolate, though some where, but they all looked delicious. The first one he grabbed was a chocolate and raspberry one, topped with a sugary glaze. It was as delicious as it looked, and Nerius debated grabbing another one, or trying a different flavor. He.. fully intended to have both, it was just a matter of the order. There were three different kinds that he could see, and after a moment of consideration, decided to try one of each, and then go back for more of his favorite.
They weren't very big, really!
Astrid finished her more protein based meal, and was now staring at him, watching as he snacked away in a manor very similar to a tailypo himself. She hardly disapproved, that seemed like a normal way to have a snack to her.

The strange, faerie like creature settled on top of the pastries and tilted its head, clutching a strange little bush in its hands. What was this going to be anyway? If he had said something... maybe he would be in shock.

Nerius had just picked up his second chocolate raspberry pastry (that had, in fact, turned out to be his favorite), when something humanoid shaped and fluttery landed in front of him. He blinked in surprise, it was hardly the strangest thing that he'd come across today, but was still unexpected. He had no idea what the creature was either, though he knew unusual creatures could occasionally be found in the Mansion. Were they Lab created, or formed like the rest of the Mansion's items and inhabitants?
The creature seemed friendly, at least, even if for some reason it was holding a.. plant? "Hello there," he greeted the faerie like creature, using a friendly tone, hoping not to startle it. "Are you wanting dessert?"
Astrid also spotted the creature, but it was too large for the tailypo kitten to try to eat, so she quickly lost interest, preferring to prowl the countertops in search of more unattended serving trays.

The Lacewing clicked to itself, looking this way and that, before focusing on the person again. "Hello!" it chimed, hopping forward a little to inspect him a bit more.

Nerius was even more surprised when the creature responded. He often attempted to greet wandering creatures with a friendly word, but this was the first time one had ever responded. There was something a little odd about how it responded, but he couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was, and the clicks didn't exactly sound like language. Astrid too was surprised by another voice, looking up at the sound, only to return to looking for food on realizing it was just the lacewing.
The creature seemed interested in him as well, and he let the lacewing hop closer for a better look. Nerius wondered if it had ever seen anything like him, just as he hadn't seen this sort of creature before. Usually creatures he encountered were more wary, but this one didn't seem to view him as a threat. Not that he had any ill will toward the creature, and in fact was trying to be friendly, falling back on his main tactic for making friends: food. "Would you like a pastry?" Slowly, as to hopefully not startle the lacewing, Nerius offered out the uneaten pastry.

"Pasty!" it agreed, hopping closer until it was right next to the man's hand. It sniffed at the food and then opened its mouth to take a huge bite. Beaming, it talked again, "Pasty!"

There was a human saying Nerius had heard, 'the way to the heart was through the stomach', and in his experience, that was often true with a variety of creatures. It also worked well enough on humanoids, which seemed reasonable, if someone offered him a chocolate pastry, that would improve his demeanor toward a person.
Nerius stayed still as the lacewing hopped closer, allowing it to sniff, and go for a bite if it wanted. "Yes, a delicious chocolate raspberry one," he agreed. He was starting to suspect the creature was more mimicking, the way an izer might, rather than truly capable of speech, but it was also possible it just didn't speak common that well.
Astrid still was more interested in her search for more snacks, which paid off as she found another appetizer platter. She wasted no time in devouring the little morsels, it wasn't a large platter, and probably wouldn't take her long to finish.
