October Terror filled Fanged’s body as she fled towards Eccentric’s Mansion. The mansion had a reputation during the month of October that was less than pleasant. It would make a good hiding place for the moment. People would be hesitant to check there. Her fingers curled around the fabric of a frayed leash. The leash was filthy, but it managed to keep the creature it was attached to from straying away from her. The halfbreed was just as filthy as the leash, but hygiene wasn’t a priority at the moment. Fanged grimaced at the thought of her clothes being equally unpleasant. She led the kitten up the front steps. The creature was a bit hesitant, but had little choice in the matter as the leash pulled him along. She swung the front door open swiftly, relieved when she found it unlocked. She ushered the halfbreed inside and shut the door behind her. (Rusty 0 1/5, 0 1/5) 1

Now that she was inside the mansion, she could take a moment to regroup. The room they had entered was dilapidated and bare-bones, but it was safe for now. She wiped some grime free from her brow. She hadn’t bathed in quite some time and she was conscious of the fact now that she was out of immediate danger.
“I suppose we should become more acquainted than we have been,” Fanged remarked to the halfbreed. “I go by Fanged, though my name is probably fairly meaningless to you. I’ll give you a name since it’ll make things easier on me. How about, Rusty?”
The halfbreed didn’t appear to have much of an opinion. Therefore, it was up to Fanged to decide that Rusty would indeed be the critter’s name. She felt calmer now that she had named the creature. Rusty had been an unexpected variable in her plans, but she was grateful for the company of another being.

“I suppose we should get comfortable. We’ll be holed up in here for quite a while,” she said.
Rusty was fortunately, not the brightest of critters. It certainly made things easier. He was quite a bit uneasy with her presence still and it would be a while before she was able to take the leash off of him. The circumstances that had brought them together were not happy. The first thing she needed to do was to build trust with the kitten.
“I wish I knew more about your biology. All I know about you is that you have Orbaru blood and that makes you unwilling to fight. Not the best trait to have in a dangerous situation, but I won’t fault you for that one.”
Rusty looked up at her words. He seemed to calm down a fair amount when she spoke. Perhaps he was picking up on her calming down. Animals could be quite perceptive in that sense. Rusty might be similar.

“Sitting here idly won’t do us much good. Maybe we can look for something we can use to clean ourselves with? This room doesn’t seem to have a whole lot, but maybe the next one will.”
Talking to Rusty helped keep her sanity. Logically, she hadn’t quite processed her current situation. Thus, her emotions were a bit unstable. She needed to figure out how to calm down entirely, but for now she would use Rusty as a talking partner. Focusing on her current situation should help to keep her from becoming too overwhelmed. The room they were in appeared unremarkable. It was almost like a false reassurance. Fanged knew that first appearances weren’t always to be trusted. A dirty, empty room might hold more secrets than it would suggest.
“We might as well check around this room as well. I’ve never recalled the mansion allowing different explorers to suddenly meet up. We shouldn’t fear anyone discovering us for now.”

Her eyes didn’t work quite as well as they used to. She didn’t have the worst vision, but her ability to see in the dark had greatly diminished from what she remembered it had been. It would be useless to dwell on how that disappointed her. She had hands! She could feel her way around if she needed to. Rusty seemed to have calmed down a bit as well. His tugging on the leash had lessened and he settled down to give his paws a good cleaning. Fanged wished it was that simple for her to get clean. At the very least, she needed to find an old rag or something that could be used to wipe the grime away.
“I suppose that’s a good thing to start looking for,” she muttered quietly.
The floorboards underneath her feet were splintered and uneven. Walking across them made her feel a bit unsafe, like she would fall through the floor.

The room itself remained rather empty. There was a dusty wooden table in the centre which was surrounded by splintered wooden chairs. Fanged might have considered sitting down on one, but the wood looked unstable. Other than that, the room was void of anything else. Was it simply a transitional space? Somewhere for the weary traveler to recuperate? It had served its purpose for her. Perhaps she would be foolish to expect anything else.
“Shall we look for the door then, Rusty?”
The door wasn’t as obvious as she thought it ought to have been. The darkness hid it from her eyes, causing her a great deal of frustration. She really would need to feel her way around. She placed her pride in a box deep within her subconscious. She held Rusty’s leash steadily in her left hand. Then with her right hand, she began to carefully feel around the wooden walls of the mansion room.

Rusty did not make a lot of noise for a creature. Fanged hoped that wasn’t a sign of trauma, though it was to be expected in situations like this. She had no way to gauge his age. People often called younger beings more resilient to trauma, but Fanged had always found this not to be the case. Trauma was harmful no matter the age. She would need to do her best to be a loving caretaker to the creature. Love would be a helpful healing tool for the both of them.
“We will build mutual trust and then when we’ve established that, I’ll let you off the leash,” she told him.
The little creature did not even try to make sense of her words. He simply stared at his paws, working to clean the dirt off of them. He was vastly unsuccessful and a sudden pang of sadness worked its way through Fanged’s chest.

A rather spooky leaf flutters to the ground nearby, making a wax-like fluttering noise. Is that a face?

“It looks like you’re going to need some help with that. I’ll do my best to find us both something that can clean us up,” she told him.
It took her a great deal longer than she would have liked before she found the door. It was a simple, wooden door. Fanged would have been silly to have expected anything else in this wooden room. She swung the door open, feeling a faint spark of surprise when it opened with ease. She hesitated slightly before guiding Rusty through the door.
“Anything will be better than this depressing, empty room.”
Her eyes hurt as light filled her vision. It wasn’t much light, but it hurt all the same. She fought not to rub her eyes, realizing that contact with her grimy hands would be harmful. Rusty seemed light sensitive as well, though his adjustment was quicker than hers. Her curiosity was briefly piqued, but she let go of the question easily.

Her focus needed to be on the present. The first thing on the list was to find some way to clean themselves. Second would be to find some food and water. Third would be to find a secure location to hunker down for the night. Having a plan of action made her feel more relaxed about her current situation. She couldn’t rid herself entirely of the sense of urgency humming throughout her body.
“Stay close,” she told Rusty even though the leash prevented him from wandering.
He was still wary of her, but he seemed to realize that it was safer for him to travel alongside her. She was certainly a better companion than the people who he’d been with before. She was strange looking and that frightened him, but she had yet to harm him. For now, he would be content to travel with her. Even if the leash was restricting.

When Rusty was settled, Fanged took the chance to explore the room. This room was ominous, but at least it seemed filled with items of interest. The mansion itself appeared similar to an abandoned house. Fanged had been in enough that they didn’t frighten her like they might other people.
“Well if you stick with me, you’ll get used to them too, Rusty.”
The reminiscing served to make her feel more at home in the mansion. Investigation was her element and that served to provide her with a sense of comfort. The room was decorated for the holiday. Jack-o-lanterns were lined up on shelves. They provided the room with a healthy glow of candlelight.
“It’s interesting that people celebrate the holiday for the entire month. I suppose they benefit from having a healthy dose of holiday cheer. A holiday based around fear causes excitement. People like to be frightened if it occurs in a safe environment.”

Rusty began to feel more confident as well. He padded around the room, sniffing cautiously at an uncarved pumpkin that had been forgotten in the corner. Rot was evident and Rusty recoiled in sudden disgust. While not exactly a pleasant smell, the rot of vegetables didn’t top Fanged’s list of horrible smells to experience. Meat was vastly more pungent when it rotted.
“I suppose that means it isn’t edible. None of the pumpkins are. They’ve been left in here for too long. Do you even eat vegetables? Pumpkin isn’t a favourite of mine, but I wouldn’t complain about eating one now. The rot is certainly a deal breaker though.”
Rusty trotted over to her, his nose still wrinkled in disgust. It concerned her slightly that she didn’t know his dietary needs. She hoped that he would be able to give her some sort of idea what he ate, but that seemed increasingly less likely.

Vai Min Mur decorations were fascinating to her. They ranged from cutesy and not at all frightening to downright terrifying. Marketing was a strange beast. Children would be frightened by decorations that were too scary, but they still liked to join in on the holiday fun. Thus, the decorations aimed towards them weren’t at all frightening. Her attention narrowed in on a plastic spider. This one was meant to be frightening, but it was cheaply made and thus, not scary at all.
“I imagine I look more frightening than this spider.”
Her top ears ached at the remark. Feeling suddenly self-conscious, Fanged scratched lightly at her wrist. Rusty glanced up at her and meeped. The noise was strange, almost like a combination between a meow and an Orbaru’s trademark boop. The sound was so surprising, Fanged immediately stopped all movement. She knew this cross had an Orbaru parent, she had been told that before.

If she were a scientist, she might want to study Rusty for pure academic purposes. However, right now it was a question of practicality. If she knew more about the creature, she could better assess how to take care of his needs. She would need to do simple experimentation to find out what he ate. Of course, that would require her to find some food first.
“Well these pumpkins aren’t going to do us much good. Even if you are capable of eating them,” she remarked to Rusty.
There were more decorations in the room. They also looked cheaply made which drastically cut down on their potential to be scary. That made this room appear to be almost like a storage room for old decorations. That would explain why all the pumpkins were rotting. It would serve her well to search through a storage room. Someone might have stashed something of importance in here.
