This room was brighter than the others. That wasn’t saying much though. When her eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness, she was able to get a good look around the room. It was hard to distinguish what type of room the area was meant to be. There was an assortment of discarded furniture. They were covered in dingy, white sheets which made it difficult to identify them. Rusty meeped as he trotted closer to one of the sheets. He leaned forward and began to bat at it with his paws. Voxel watched with an intent look on his face. When it became evident that the Lazaru wasn’t making much progress, he stepped in to try and help.
“That’s an admirable trait to have, even if you can’t effect much with your ethereal ability.”
A grin formed on his face as he wiggled in place. He pounced forward with the ease of an expert. It was a lot more impressive than when Rusty did his hunter’s crouch. While Voxel’s pounce was impressive, it was rather ineffective. His ethereal body left him unable to move the sheet off of the piece of furniture. Deciding to help out, Fanged pulled the sheet off with her own hands.

She was mildly surprised when the sheet revealed an old sink. Rusty jumped up and down with happiness. The sink was one of those old, metal stand alone sinks. It was industrial sized, similar to what one might find in a hospital.
“It doesn’t seem to be connected to anything. We won’t be able to use it for water until it’s connected,” she said.
Voxel took the initiative to check around the rest of the room. He moved with a grace that only an ethereal being could possess. He returned to her, his eyes glittering with amusement. She didn’t understand what had the being so excited. She didn’t know a whole lot about Specters. His attention could be captured by any number of things. He made no indication that he wanted her to follow him. She decided she’d need to take her own look around the room.
“You’ll have to follow, Rusty.”
The halfbreed was happy to oblige. There were no apparent dangers in this room and thus, he felt a little safer than usual. It was a welcome change. Rusty hadn’t been very happy where they’d been before. Witnessing an Orbaru halfbreed in an unhappy state felt very unnatural.

A pretty little leaf decided to keep them company

There was another one of those strange leaves in this room. Fanged was once again compelled to collect it. Perhaps they were worth something and her subconscious was making her aware of that fact. Once it was safely tucked away with the other leaves, she turned back to the matter at hand. She would need to collect a few parts before she was able to make the sink work. She’d need some sort of connector that would be able to connect to the water supply. The sink also needed a handle. Right now, there was no way to turn it on.
“It’s sort of like a puzzle with a practical use,” she remarked.
Both of her pets were occupying themselves by searching the rest of the room. She wasn’t sure how helpful that was exactly, but Rusty might accidentally knock something over and reveal something of interest. If she were to find the parts she needed, she was going to need to remove a lot of sheets from furniture. The task would be a bit time consuming, but the end result would hopefully be worth it. She would need to get a little creative. She scanned the room, trying to decide where to search first.

Voxel trotted alongside her when Fanged headed over towards the corner of the room. Rusty followed as well and she contemplated for a moment whether he was ready to be let off the leash. He seemed to trust he a lot more than he used to. She might even consider herself to be the person he trusted the most at this point. Keeping him on leash seemed cruel somehow. Feeling suddenly guilty, she leaned down and removed the ratty collar from his neck. She tucked the collar and leash away in her hooded sweatshirt. She might still need them in the future.
“You have freedom now. Use it responsibly.”
Immediately, Rusty took to rolling around on the floor. The floor itself was simple concrete. It wasn’t particularly dirty, but Fanged wouldn’t find it comfortable to roll around on. Voxel regarded Rusty with curiosity. He didn’t have much of a concept of itchiness so he wouldn’t be able to quite understand what the halfbreed was doing exactly. She watched both of her pets for a moment, her heart warming at the interaction. She stepped over close to the sheet, bracing herself for something scary hidden underneath. Voxel watched carefully, though his expression was curious.

A gurney lay underneath the sheet. It was far from expected, but in hindsight, Fanged felt that she should have seen it coming. She’d observed that the sink seemed industrial sized. This room was meant to be some kind of treatment room. Fanged steeled herself, not about to let some old hospital equipment send her into a panic. She inhaled deeply, holding the breath in for a few heartbeats before slowly releasing it. Rusty rubbed against her leg, his fur bristling slightly. He could sense her uneasiness and he tried his best to calm her down. Fanged was grateful for the effort.
“I’ll be okay. Just some bad memories,” she told him.
Voxel trotted close, curious about the interaction between the two of him. He tilted his head, watching them carefully. Human behaviour would be strange for him until he spent more time with her. Figuring she was rather useless reminiscing about old memories, Fanged turned to investigate the gurney. The entire contraption was rusted, as though it had been unused for years. That prospect was a very real possibility. She wiped at the rust, testing to see if any would scrape off. The rust remained, it wouldn’t be able to be removed without a powerful cleaning agent.

She scanned the gurney for any items that could be useful. There were a variety of discarded tools left on its surface. They were dull and rusted. If she could find a way to sharpen them, she might be able to find a use for them. Rusty rubbed against the side of the gurney. It seemed like some sort of scent marking behaviour, but Fanged didn’t think it would be particularly effective. Voxel mimicked the action, though the end result for him was even less effective. She smirked for a moment, amused by the antics of her companions. However, she still had work to do.
“There should be something in this room that we can use to sharpen those tools. It’s sort of a necessity to keep surgical tools sharp.”
The only way to find such a contraption would be to look under more sheets. She narrowed her eyes, debating which sheet to remove next. What she needed would likely be located on a table. She chose a square shaped hidden object and gripped the end of the sheet. She stiffened for a moment before ripping off the sheet. A cloud of dust burst into the air, forcing her to cover her face.

It took a while for the dust to settle. Fanged’s eyes watered and she sneezed three times. Rusty sneezed as well, his body shaking with the effort. Once again, Voxel regarded them with curiosity. Corporeal functions were still a mystery to him. When Fanged had recovered, she moved to investigate the area the sheet had revealed. As she had suspected, there was a table underneath. It was metallic and appeared as though it had been polished recently. Fanged ran her hand against the surface, checking for any imperfections. The entire table appeared void of them. She almost would have assumed it were new if it hadn’t been covered in so much dust.
“A replacement perhaps? It certainly doesn’t match the rust that everything else has.”
Rusty perked his head up at the sentence. The action made Fanged feel guilty that she hadn’t been able to train him some of the basics. Perhaps if she could find some food, but that would also involve figuring out what kinds of foods Rusty liked. Eating for survival was a lot simpler than trying to figure out a training reward.
There were a few objects of note on the table. The first thing that caught her attention was a tiny, silver key.

“I wonder what this goes to,” she murmured to herself.
She scanned the room for anything obvious, like a locked safe or a cabinet. There didn’t appear to be anything, but that didn’t necessarily mean anything. The lock could be covered still or the key simply belonged to a different room. For now, she would keep the key safe in the pocket of her jeans. Rusty trotted closer to her. His ears were pricked forward and his eyes were bright. It seemed her had finished exploring the room. Voxel followed, close on his heels. The two were becoming rather attached, which Fanged took to be a good sign.
“I suppose that means you’re becoming a bit tamer,” she told the Specter.
The creature gave a short bark in response. The noise sounded similar to laughter. Now that the key was safely stashed away, she could take a look at the rest of the table. It was lucky that this room was adequately lit. She had no flashlight which was typically a staple for investigations. There was another one of those strange leaves and she picked that up. The compulsion still confused her slightly, but she tended to listen to her instincts.

“Maybe I’ll be able to buy you something nice with these leaves. They certainly feel like some type of currency. Almost like something fae folk would use,” she told Rusty.
The Lazaru meeped in response, his tail playfully flicking back and forth. Voxel nipped at his shoulder, though the touch wasn’t physical. While her pets were distracted, Fanged decided to check out the rest of the table. The objects that lay on top were rather unusual. She didn’t see any surgical tools like she would have expected. (Apparently the gurney would remain the only source for those.” Instead there were an abundance of pens, each a different colour.
“Seems a bit unusual. I know doctors need to keep records, but gel pens aren’t fitting for that at all.”
She gathered up a handful of pens. Maybe she could find something to test them out on. They felt important to her, even if they didn’t look particularly unusual. There was nothing left on the table, so she’d need to look elsewhere for something to write on.
“There’s still some things covered by sheets. Perhaps I should look under those.”
She headed towards the largest shape, hoping to reveal some sort of storage area.

She yanked the sheet of quickly, this time covering her face in advance to protect herself from the dust cloud that was certain to follow. To her surprise, the level of dust was minimal. The contraption that lay beneath was far from usual, however. There was a chair centered on a platform. Electrical wires protruded out of the chair, though they didn’t seem to be connected to a source. She wondered if she should find to way to connect it, but it seemed rather dangerous.
“Electric chairs are typically used for executions after all. Though the machine it’s hooked up to appears to be a device that should give a reading of the brain.”
She definitely wouldn’t consider hooking her brain up to a potentially unstable machine. It’d need to be a life or death situation before that occurred. She glanced over at her pets, wondering for a moment if one could even get a brain scan from Voxel. She was unsure if Voxel’s brain would have a typical electrical reading. This could be a way to test that, but the potential for danger caused Fanged to nix that idea immediately. She didn’t even consider Rusty as a potential guinea pig.

Ignoring the machine for now, Fanged began to investigate around it. She grinned as she found a clipboard located near the base of the machine. A leaflet of instructions was attached. The backside of each piece of paper was blank which meant that it could be used as scrap. She would wait before she tested out the gel pens. She didn’t want to waste what little resources she had. She’d finish investigating this room first before trying to solve the puzzles within. Rusty followed her as she headed to the next covered item. This sheet was surprisingly clean, but when Fanged ripped it off, a sizable spider scuttled out.
“Gross but it doesn’t look venomous,” she commented.
Rusty attempted to chase the arachnid. He didn’t get very far before the spider disappeared into a crack in the wall. Voxel slunk close to Rusty, nipping the air near his right ear. Rusty meeped in response and tried to swipe at the Specter. The action was unsuccessful, but Voxel playfully ducked away all the same. The furniture underneath the sheet was smaller than anticipated. It was a desk, clearly sized for a species much smaller than she was. Smaller humanoids were rather common in the labs.

“Definitely too small for me,” she murmured. “But maybe it’ll have some goodies stashed away.”
She had to crouch down to reach the drawers. The first was filled with breath mints. Not ideal for nutrition, but they’d work to freshen up her breath a touch. She unwrapped one and plopped it in her mouth. It was stale, but Fanged wasn’t exactly picky. She would have offered one to Rusty, but she wasn’t certain if they would be harmful to him or not. She pocketed the rest. After they got the sink working, they’d be able to hunt down some proper food.
“Do you even eat?” she asked Voxel.
The Specter was incapable of responding in any proper manner that Fanged could understand. She’d need to do more research on him when she was in safer territory. She needed to research Rusty as well, but she was uncertain how much info would be out there on him. She could always buy a few different options and see which he liked the most. It would be time consuming and a potential waste of credits, but it was the only option she could think of.
“I’ll need to figure out what your other DNA parent was first.”
