September Once again, Fanged returned with Ink to the mansion. The Huntress Mosca appeared excited and trotted up the front steps of the mansion with a mischievous glint in her eyes. The weather was steadily growing colder, though not nearly enough for the woman to complain about it. She would miss the summer months, but autumn was also a lovely time of year. Soon a full year will have passed since she first obtained Rusty. She looked down at Ink, glad to have adopted the Mosca. She didn’t have many commonly acquired pets and that made Ink rather special in her kennel. “Are you ready for a new month of exploring?” she asked Ink. The Mosca was already at the front door of the mansion, waiting patiently to be let in. Fanged joined her and opened the door without hesitation. Once it was open, Ink slipped inside and waited for Fanged to follow. (Ink 5 1/5, 5 1/5) 1

The theme for the mansion this month seemed to be in line with autumn. The first room they entered had a collection of colourful leaves placed around the entrance of the door. It gave the illusion that someone before them had tracked them inside, but the leaves on the trees outside hadn’t quite changed colours yet. Ink took a moment to playfully bat at the piles of leaves with her front paws. They crunched underneath her claws. Fanged grinned at her antics, glad that her Mosca companion was prepared for an adventure.
“Okay, we’re on the lookout for some remnant crystals. Word on the street is that if I collect enough, I can get my hands on something worthwhile,” she remarked.
Ink tilted her head up at the sound of Fanged’s words. She pricked her ears forward, ready to keep her eyes peeled for any signs of treasure.

The initial room in the mansion was small this trip. It didn’t take Ink and her long at all to explore the room. There wasn’t anything of importance located here, so Fanged made the decision to approach the door and push it open. Ink darted through, leaving Fanged only with the option to follow. She found herself growing sleepy as she entered the sudden warmth of the next room. A fireplace was located in the centre of the room. She had never seen one quite so fancy. It appeared more like a firepit than a regular fireplace. Ink approached it with caution, pausing to tentatively sniff at the air.
“I don’t think there’s actually any smoke emitting from the supposed fire,” she remarked. “I don’t quite know how it’s doing that. Perhaps it’s an electrical fireplace? I don’t quite know how those work.”
Ink lost interest quickly and turned to the rest of the room.

There were bookcases lining the walls and when Fanged approached them, she realized that the books had been constructed from colourful leaves. The effect was strange and she impulsively reached out and picked one up.
“This has words, but it isn’t a language that I can understand,” she commented.
Ink was not even remotely interested in the strange leaf books. The Mosca instead turned back to the fireplace, inching closer to the base of it. She reached out with one paw and touched the base. When she didn’t pull back, Fanged figured that the base had some sort of heat protection on it.
“Be careful!” she called out.
Ink didn’t appear to heed her words. She watched the flames with rapt interest. While her Mosca was distracted, the woman turned back to the books. She flipped through a couple of them, understanding that they were all in different languages from one another.

She placed the books back on the shelf, intrigued by their words but not entirely certain if they were written in a real language. They would be worthless to her for now, so it was best to leave them alone. She glanced at the rest of the bookshelf, searching to see if there was anything worthwhile that was present on it.
“Nothing of true value. A few dried vegetables, but I wouldn’t trust those to be edible,” she remarked.
Ink looked up at her when Fanged lightly placed a hand on her back. She stroked the Mosca’s fur for a moment before heading towards the opposite side of the room. There were still more objects to look at and decorations to investigate. She found herself drawn closer towards a pumpkin that was growing right in the room. She leaned down and touched it, surprised when it proved to be real.

“I don’t think I’d trust that enough to eat it. Not that I care much for pumpkin anyway,” she remarked.
Ink trotted to join her, intrigue glittering in her eyes. They both stared intently at the pumpkin for a moment before Fanged had the bright idea to try to bust it open. She didn’t have any tools on her and she suddenly had the idea that she should likely carry a pocketknife or something with her at the very least. Perhaps there was something in this room that would help her with her quest.
“Something sharp, something sharp,” she muttered to herself.
She looked around the room with a new objective in mind. As such, her priorities had shifted. With a little bit of effort, she managed to locate a letter opener that was placed on a side table. She carefully picked it up, aware that it was sharp enough to slice her.

She lifted the letter opener up triumphantly and stepped back over towards the pumpkin. Ink raised her head and watched Fanged carefully as the woman picked up the pumpkin. She had some experience carving pumpkins, but not enough to consider herself particularly good at it. She sliced carefully around the top of the pumpkin and removed the top of it.
“I feel a bit bad dumping all of this on the floor, but I guess it can’t be helped,” she said.
She shrugged as she tipped the pumpkin open, spilling gooey seeds onto the ground. Normally, a person would collect the seeds and cook them, but Fanged had little desire to do that. With the pumpkin cut open and its innards spread out against the floor, the woman realized she didn’t know what she had been expecting. Ink glanced up at her, not quite understanding what the purpose of this whole thing was.

She needed this entire endeavor to have a purpose. She glanced around the room, searching for something that she could use to search through the remains of the pumpkin. She found herself a decorative stick of some sort and picked it up. Ink tried to grab the end of the stick, batting at it with her front paws. Fanged took a moment to play with the Mosca until she got bored. After that was done, she turned back to the mess of pumpkin that she had spread out around the floor. She took the decorative stick and began to search through the remains of the pumpkin. To her surprise, there was a key hidden in the mess of seeds. She was quick to grab it, but she’d need to clean it up first. It would be difficult to fit into the proper lock while it was covered in pumpkin goo.

If she wanted to properly wash the key, she’d need to find a source of water. In the mansion, she assumed this would take the form of a faucet or something. For now, there wasn’t much else she could do with the key except hold it. She didn’t exactly want to place it in her pocket in its current state and there wasn’t any water in this room. Before they moved to the next room, she scoured the rest of the room for any objects that appeared worthwhile to take with. To her surprise, there were some small tokens that appeared potentially valuable and a strange flower that she felt compelled to take as well. With those objects collected, she gathered Ink and stepped over towards the door. The door was simple to open, indicating that the key did not unlock something in this room. It would be a later mystery to solve.

Before she exited the room, her eyes caught sight of an interesting instrument. She picked it up without hesitation as it grabbed her attention.
“Is this a flute? I haven’t ever seen one quite like this,” she remarked.
Ink lifted her head to briefly look at her, but her focus soon shifted back to the door. The two of them stepped through the open door and Fanged shut it closed behind them. She felt at ease for now. Perhaps it was the warm atmosphere of the mansion this month or the prospect of solving the mystery of a strange key, but she was certainly enjoying herself.
“Alright Ink, time to put on our game face. Let’s see if we can clean off this key and figure out where it leads us,” she told her Mosca.
Ink was pleased to be able to explore a new room. She flicked her tail as she walked around the room.

The room they had entered appeared to be rather large. Fanged did a quick scan to see if there was a water source located within the room. When she didn’t see one, she felt a bit disappointed that she wouldn’t be able to solve the mystery of the key just yet. Ink stalked forward her gaze narrowed in on an object near the middle of the room. The Mosca clumsily stalked forward and pounced onto a strange object that Fanged couldn’t quite identify. She pounced onto the object, landing slightly off target. Fanged considered it a good attempt and she moved to investigate what Ink had her eye on. A small doll like object was centered in the room. It looked like a doll and as though it was made from some type of plant. She picked it up once Ink had grown tired of it. She placed it in her bag.

After briefly checking around some more, Fanged collected two more flowers and two more glass eyes for her backpack. She turned to Ink to check on the Mosca. The creature was focused now on scouting out the room. The room itself did not appear remarkable at first glance. It was spacious, but most of that was empty space. She didn’t mind being in a boring room for a bit. Boring rooms could be more deceiving than they first appeared.
“Let’s take a look, shall we? Here, I’ll even show you a few tricks that I know,” she told Ink.
The walls were bare for the most part. They were painted with a fresh coat of dark brown paint, at least they appeared to be. Fanged still didn’t quite know how mansion architecture manifested itself. She made sure that Ink was watching as she pressed her palms against the room walls.
