[Varkon - Fly - 5]
He could hear Varkon growl as he circled above, but the wiurn didn't respond verbally.
<Land, and give it another go,> Nerius instructed. He half expected Varkon to ignore him, but the wiurn swooped down for a landing, digging up large gouges in the grass as he did so. It was probably out of annoyance, but Nerius didn't particularly care, it wasn't his lawn after all, and the Park was intended to be beat up during pet training.
Once the wiurn had come to a stop, Nerius gave the instruction again, <Remember what I said about the weight balance, and fly!>
Varkon took off, and put in the extra work on his right wing to get a more even flight power, but he seemed to be focusing so much on that his overall flight was more wobbly. <I think you're used to less power from your mechanical wing, and you're overcorrecting,> Nerius advised.

[Varkon - Fly - 6]
Nerius could hear another unhappy growl even with the wiurn in the air. He was starting to suspect this was more than the wiurn just finding the task tedious, perhaps he was aware of his ungainly takeoffs, and it was a sore spot? It wouldn't do any good to point it out, and would only serve to make him more irritable and uncooperative. Instead Nerius simply instructed, <Land, then try again.>
Varkon came down to a heavy landing, looking no less unhappy about the situation on the ground than in the air. That wouldn't get him out of having to practice, and Nerius told him again, <Fly!> The wiurn leapt for the skies again, managing to keep his wings even, and to be slightly less off balance than before. He wasn't over correcting this time, it was just his usual level of unbalance. <That's better!> Nerius tried to encourage him, though doubted it'd do much to improve the cyborg's mood.

[Varkon - Fly - 7]
They still had a way to go though. <Land, and try again, alright?> Nerius instructed, and Varkon didn't hesitate to land. The ground was going to be absolutely mangled by the end of this, but that wasn't really Nerius' problem.
<Fly!> he instructed, stepping back as he did so. The wiurn had landed closer than he would have preferred, and was kicking up quite a gust. At least he was still cooperating, and even better, was a little less wobbly getting into the air. He was sure to hate that description, but he did lurch unsteadily as he took off.
Nerius let him circle for a short while, before having Varkon land, and repeating the instruction to <Fly!> It was a little more improved, but still not steady, <Better, but you're still tilting to the left when you take off,> Nerius explained, trying his best to be helpful even if the wiurn wasn't.

[Varkon - Fly - 8]
At least Varkon wasn't growling in frustration every time, and came down for a landing without any audible grumbling when requested. Maybe the improvement was helping his mood?
<Try it again, fly!> Nerius instructed, watching as the wiurn took off. <That was more steady than before.> It was a little better, not perfect, but Varkon was improving bit by bit as he practiced.
He didn't have the wiurn circle for long, he could already stay airborne just fine, that wasn't the issue they were working on, and soon called the cyborg back down. Nerius had him continue to practice his takeoffs, giving advice when he noticed Varkon over correcting to one way or another, and slowly, his launches became more and more steady.
Eventually, his takeoffs smoothed out entirely. Nerius considered taking him to the gym to improve things further, but for now, his takeoffs were as smooth as any other wiurn's.

[Varkon - Roar - 1]
Nerius had him take a break after that, and gave the wiurn some more of the blood cubes, and some actual water. This had been less effort on Nerius' part, he hadn't had to throw anything this time, but more work on Varkon's part, as he'd had to repeatedly take flight. There were only so many things they could cram into one day, but Nerius had one last thing he wanted to cover for today's training session, and it was something that didn't take too much physical effort.
Once the wiurn had perked up a bit, though was still looking a bit irritable, Nerius explained what he had in mind next. It was sure easier than trying to lure a creature into performing an activity. <This is a bit of an odd one, but I'd like to improve your roar next.>
Indeed, Varkon was rather confused about that. <My roar? Why would that help my fighting abilities?>

[Varkon - Roar - 2]
<It's a common technique in the Pit,> Nerius shared his reasoning, even he thought it was a little strange of a strategy, but it did work, <Many combatants use loud bursts of sound to rattle their opponent. You'll likely have it used against you, and you'll need to be able to retaliate.>
<Really? With just sound?> Varkon still wasn't entirely convinced, and Nerius realized he hadn't actually experienced this. It had been a long time since his last tournament, so long that the noise strategy hadn't become widespread yet.
<Yes. I've seen it in every tournament I've entered the last few years, it's widely used and does make a difference.> Persuading the wiurn of this probably would have been easier if Varkon had actually seen the recent tournaments. There were two going on right now, and while it would be awkward to put a wiurn in the audience, he could probably have Varkon watch the broadcasts.

[Varkon - Roar - 3]
Though not entirely convinced, and not as enthusiastic as he was about techniques to actually strike his foes, Varkon agreed. <Very well. Should I simply roar?> Maybe there was something more to it that he wasn't seeing?
<Pointed away from me,> Nerius clarified, <But yes. You want to be as loud as possible.> At this, Nerius moved to be beside and back from where the wiurn was standing. <Now roar!>
Varkon cooperated, and let loose an impressive bellow. It didn't really sound like a normal wiurn, it was highly mechanical, and judging by how the red plating went all the way up his neck, Nerius suspected the cyborg no longer had his organic vocal cords. That could be to their advantage, he might be able to make some truly awful noises with that. Because while the roar was decently loud, it wasn't to the level of disorienting that it needed to be to be effective.

[Varkon - Roar - 4]
<Like that?> Varkon asked, turning to look at Nerius.
<Sort of,> it was a good first try, even if it wasn't quite the goal, <Louder, if possible, and more.. force.. behind it.> Nerius wasn't quite sure how to explain that part well, and the wiurn stared at him, not entirely understanding. <As if you're angry, not just loud.> That explanation seemed to help, and Varkon turned away from Nerius before letting loose a more vicious sounding roar.
<That was better,> Nerius decided. The description had helped, 'angry' was an easy thing for the cyborg to understand. It still wasn't quite right, but he also wasn't sure how to explain it better without dragging Schism out here to demonstrate what he wanted. He'd rather not though, despite the species difference and robotic parts, Schism tended to regard Varkon as a very large drake. So for now, he just had Varkon try again, <Roar!>

[Varkon - Roar - 5]
The roar was loud and aggressive, but still not quite there yet. <That was decent, but it needs to be more..> Nerius considered how to try to explain, before an idea hit. <You know how Vazra makes that absolutely horrendous screeching?> Varkon grimaced at that, he was usually the one to wrangle the faulty cyborg when she glitched out, and was familiar with that awful sound. <That's the sort the sort of disorienting we're going for here.>
<Ah, that,> Varkon wasn't thrilled, but he did understand the description at least, though <I cannot make the same type of sound.> Despite being of a similar cyborg model, the two had different abilities.
<That's fine, it doesn't need to be the same sound, just the same effect,> Nerius assured him, <Now try it again, roar!> Varkon let loose another angry bellow, this time working a bit of a harsh, mechanical sound into the roar.

[Varkon - Roar - 6] Nerius grimaced at the noise, it still wasn't as bad as Vazra's screeching, but the description had worked, and it was much closer to the type of sound he was wanting. Varkon had noticed the reaction, and asked, <Was that better?> <Yes, that's the sort of sound you want, loud, angry, and unpleasant.> Even facing away from him it wasn't a nice sound, but that was the point. <Try it again, and do 'more', if you can.> Nerius was sure the wiurn was capable of an even nastier sound. <Roar!> At the instruction, Varkon roared, doing his best to make the sound louder, angrier, and more harsh. It was certainly unpleasant, and Nerius grimaced. It wasn't the most fun thing for him, but it was an important technique to learn, so he'd put up with it. <That was good,> Nerius encouraged the wiurn, and decided to take a few steps back before giving the instruction again, <Roar!> (Nerius: 5/10) (Varkon: Lv: 44, 143/145 | Lyl: 30, 143/145)

[Varkon - Roar - 7]
The sound was impressively loud, that had been the easiest thing to get across, and Varkon had gotten that part down quickly. It was also even more harsh and vicious than before, which was just what Nerius wanted, even if his eardrums didn't. <That was good!> he told the wiurn, though wasn't about to call it done quite yet.
He had Varkon keep practicing his roar, and it didn't take long for it to improve to the level of awful sound that he wanted. After that it was a matter of practice to make sure Varkon would be able to do it consistently, and to make sure he'd remember how to do it in the future.
It was many roars later that something unusual happened, after a particularly loud roar, they both heard the panicked bugle of a thundergug in the not to far distance, the sound having upset another park goer.

[Varkon - Roar - 8]
<Opps?> Nerius gave the wiurn a sketchy smile.
The wiurn seemed to find this somewhat amusing, and answered dryly, <That's what you wanted, right?>
<Oh very much so,> Nerius agreed, <But maybe we should leave before you cause a stampede.> The startled thundergug made him think the roar was capable of doing exactly what he wanted, and though he knew Varkon would want to keep going, he didn't want to over train the wiurn. Besides, it wasn't reasonable to get everything he wanted to go over done in a single day.
<I'd rather continue,> Varkon looked to the 'gug, then back to Nerius.
<We'll come back tomorrow. You'll learn better after a rest,> Nerius explained, <And besides, a rampaging thundergug in the area might make things challenging.> He could still hear it trumpeting and stomping in the not as far as he'd like distance, and would rather not be around if it decided to go wild. Varkon didn't protest further, and the two headed home for the day.

It was the next day, and the two had returned to the park to continue with Varkon's training. There was no way they'd be able to find the exact spot they'd used last time, but any larger, clear space would do. There weren't as many people as yesterday, probably because it was colder, at least by local standards, and it didn't take long to find a decent spot.
While Nerius still had his backpack, he'd also brought some additional 'supplies', and was carrying a large wooden crate with holes along the sides. Squeaks came from inside every so often, and Varkon had been eyeing the crate, though Nerius hadn't explained exactly what was inside or why he had it. It was set on top of a stump, making it a bit of a centerpiece, and the wiurn had to ask, <What's with the box?> There was clearly something alive in it, but that didn't explain why it was here.

[Varkon - Ebil Nom ("Feed") - 1]
<They're for training,> Nerius told him, before removing the lid to reveal what was inside, <Jumbo live grubbles.> Though large by grubble standards, roughly the size of an average rabbit, they were still quite little compared to the wiurn.
Varkon wasn't terribly impressed, <Awful small for a target, aren't they?>
<They are,> Nerius agreed, <But we need a living target for today.>
That caught the cyborg's interest, <What do you have planned?>
<You have an interesting method of feeding, draining the life force from your prey,> he explained, <It has somewhat limited applications, but has the potential to be useful in the right situations. You'll need to be able to do so faster though, a live enemy isn't going to just sit there and let you feed off of it.> Nerius had watched the wiurn feed, and it wasn't exactly a quick process, usually performed on prey he had dispatched in some other way.

[Varkon - Ebil Nom ("Feed") - 2]
<It won't do much to harm my foe, if it's still alive,> Varkon wasn't entirely convinced, but didn't sound unhappy about the strategy.
<No, but I've noticed it gives you an increased vigor, which could be useful if you're injured during a fight,> Nerius was rather used to having to explain everything to the sentient wiurn. He could be rather single minded when it came to attacking, and it took extra persuasion to convince him other techniques were worthwhile.
This explanation satisfied him, at least, <You have a point. Very well, give me a grubble.>
Nerius lifted one of the stout, wiggly creatures out of the box, carefully passing it to the wiurn, who gripped it with one of his mechanical forelimbs. <Feed,> Nerius instructed, <Faster is better here.> The grubble wasn't happy about being in the predator's claws, and tried in vain to scrabble away as the jaws came down and teeth sunk in to the soft wiggly creature.
