Morgan did have several other snacks for the creature, but for a moment they needed to warm their hands. They shook, they were so cold and quite tired from the hard physical labor that they were not used to. They shakily found a spot to sit down nearby, and took a seat on the cold iron material of one of their several little benches. They waved for Matsuba to come over, and then searched around for one of the treats to give him. They could theoretically spend some time in training him, but honestly they really didn't feel like messing with it at all. Whereas they felt like they could spend quite a bit of energy working with Kaodie (they'd warmed up to him considerably over the hard cold months) they really didn't want to spend a lot of time working with this creature that didn't pick things up nearly as quickly as the critter did.
"Here you g-go, Matsuba." They said, fishing another treat from their pocket to hand him.

The rest of the day was a bit of a bust. They'd really been hoping that there would be another drop of a berry from the fellow, but he was closely guarding his tail beyond anything that Morgan had seen before. So, not wishing to further waste their time, they moved back to their mansion and got on with their life. The winter season was not as long as they would have liked, so it was a while before they got back at all. They had a small space of an hour in the evening the go out to the Garden and check for any berries with Matsuba. After performing the spell to allow them to be separated from Kaodie for a little while, they went out and opened the gate. "Matsuba!" They called out. "Come 'ere!"
It didn't take long for him to show up behind a tree and watch the human carefully.

The bespectacled human crosses their arms over their chest- partially because it is still cold and partially because they were a little bit unimpressed with the beast. He'd been very difficult to gather from this year; in fact, they strongly felt like he was easier to gather from that first year- when they didn't know each other quite as well as Morgan thought that they did now. Perhaps it was because Matsuba had gotten used to Morgan bothering him during the winter for said berries. He seemed to prefer to be left alone during the other parts of the year. Only every once in a while did he accept a treat from Morgan's hands in the sweltering summer (which he seemed to hate). Perhaps he would prefer to be left alone in the winter, too. Morgan had heard that there was somewhere selling the berries...
Undoubtedly they would not be as fresh as their tried-and-true Matsuba's were.

"Are you not g-gonna let me pick anymore berries this year?" They'd managed to grab only the smallest of amounts from him, it truly felt like a waste. It was now quite late in the season, and there was a great chance that they weren't going to get very many more from him, even if they did. They'd started the season hoping for ten berries, but now even five sets of berries sounded like it might be too much to hope for. Unless Matsuba (and really, the garden as a whole!) began to cooperate, they weren't going to have much hope for berries throughout the year, either. Morgan waves for Matsuba to come over, and very reluctantly- he does make his way closer. He tended to prefer long distances, and Morgan could definitely tell it. "I did b-bring you treats, though." Morgan mumbles, reaching for the treat bag in their pocket and finding it much harder to locate than usual.

Matsuba's walk was slow going. It didn't seem like his species was supposed to walk about upon their hind limbs, let alone their proclivity for selecting a staff (oddly, they didn't seem to be able to use other tools- as Morgan had noticed the last time they'd been here and been able to confirm for theirself). Morgan took the extra amount of time to try to find those treats that they were sure that they had packed. Hands in both pockets and rummaging around, they thought back on being in their house. They'd been sure to put some of them in a plastic baggie... And then they had put them in their pockets, hadn't they? They pulled things out of their pockets one after another. An abandoned stick of gum that was still in it's silvery wrapper, a research notebook... Aha- a baggy! They pulled the baggy of treats out before Matsuba even got to them.

The difficulty in finding those didn't matter, since Matsuba was so slow anyway. Morgan had a treat all pulled out from the baggie and held out for him already by the time he got to them so that he would be rewarded for the trouble. With any luck, they could just barely begin to sneak a peek at Matsuba's tail tip to hopefully find some of those berries this go around, if they were lucky. Matsuba slowly takes the treat for himself and brings it to his own mouth while leaning heavily on the staff quite heavily. Without that tail, it seemed like he'd fall straight over on his face at the first wind to rise up. Morgan was certain that this was partially why he was so touchy over that tail- and probably it did have to do with producing the berries too. Perhaps his tail was tender due to it?

Your King of Evergreen has plenty of berries for the picking!

Morgan only really had enough time for one more very short visit with the King of Evergreen during the time period in which he was going to be in the way of putting off berries this year; and they hoped to make the best of it with any luck. After work, they bring Kaodie to the house and perform the spell that would allow them to be without him for the single hour that they had to spend out in the garden. The last time they were here they had been extremely lucky; and they really could not have asked for more. He'd deigned to drop them two separate sets of berries; and to meet their goal for the season (well, the new goal- there was no way that they were going to be able to get ten sets out of him in one season at all!). They stepped into the garden and closed the gate behind them.[36] - [Morgan is still using Sever Bond, and playing with the King of Evergreen]

Morgan was quite happy each time that they came to the garden to do this that they had taught the King of Evergreen both his name and to come on command. They gave the command for him to come there, and they stood near the gate. It was quite chilly out- as it had generally been that winter. They wrapped their arms up in the sleeves of their labcoat and shivered anyway. Matsuba was a slow walker, so it would definitely take quite a bit of time for him to get there; time that they didn't really have. It might even take him the whole hour if Morgan was unlucky and caught him at the absolute worst time; he could be on the far side of the garden entirely from where they were!
Luckily for Morgan, it didn't take the creature the entire hour to get there. He was walking through the brush within fifteen.

The creature had an extra limp this go around; not one he'd had last time around at least. This immediately caused Morgan quite a bit of concern. As soon as the beast broke the treeline, Morgan closed the distance theirself. "Did you hurt yourself, Matsuba?" That did not bode well at all. "Let m-me see." They demanded more than asked, but with a soft voice still. They reach out to touch the shoulder of the strangely human-like beast's shape, and turned him slightly. Matsuba was pliant to the movement, if a little stiff acting whenever Morgan bent to look. It wasn't anything wrong with his legs, from what they could tell- and apparently it wasn't at his side either. "Where did you h-hurt yourself? I can tell -something- i-is wrong at least?" Morgan murmurs, giving him another quick once over. Perhaps he hadn't hurt himself- though Morgan feared that it might have been another creature's fault in the garden at worst.

Morgan noticed where the 'hurt' was after another pass over; it was the creature's tail. It almost looked like something really tiny had been trying to nibble on it. But tiny was a little bit of an understatement. Was it bugs, perhaps? "Goodness, M-matsuba, you've gotten something chewing on ya, huh?" They dug around in their pocket, looking to see if they had their first aid kit in there this go around... Luckily for Matsuba, Morgan did have the first aid kit with them. They pulled it out, and sat on the ground. "C-mere, Matsuba." Morgan said, patting the grass alongside them to try to get him to sit down. Matsuba seemed to hesitate for a moment, and then he carefully hunkered down. It wasn't anything like the movement that a human would make, and that was comforting in some odd ways. Morgan reached out for his tail, and he slid that back behind him.

"Come on Matsuba, I g-gotta see it again, give it here." They murmur, and reach much more slowly this time for his tail. Finally, the creature offers his tail over, almost directly where the thing had been 'chewed' on. Morgan was careful to apply first aid to it to the best of their ability. "I w-wonder if there is a shop that offers something to keep bugs f-from bothering you." Morgan murmurs, mostly to theirself and at Matsuba instead of the other way around. The creature allowed them to help him, and then whenever they were done, he moved his tail back and away from Morgan. "O-okay, I can accept that." Morgan tells him, a little anxiously. They stand up as well, and Matsuba stands and nudges Morgan's hand to ask for treats. "I guess I have a treat f-for ya." They had brought some, but not his favorite kind, sadly.
