From there, she turned and examined her domain. Lisan was already making herself at home, sniffing at and examining the rocks. It was a classic desert environment, or perhaps a savannah. It was rocky in places, with packed soil between the far flung plants. Cacti sprung from the earth here and there, and acacia trees gave the occasional desperate shaded spot. There were little tufts of desert grass and particularly hardy flowers that sprung up around the rocks, their roots clinging to the scraps of moisture that culminated beneath them. Despite the outward ‘wildness’ however, there was a sense of culture and sterility to it as well. The rocks were expertly arranged, giving a sense of calmness and deliberation, and the gravel was occasionally put down in decorative spirals. The trees were decorated with ribbons in places, and the cacti were placed well away from anywhere where one might walk.

In the few spots of shade that existed, there were even benches planted beneath the trees. In that way everyone who came here could examine and enjoy the beauty of nature while remaining unharmed by it. It was one of her better designed garden areas, in Fiera’s opinion. A testament to her skills. Lisan had better appreciate it, she thought while glaring at the sahel baakir. That being said though, it was admittedly not as up to snuff as it should be. The acacia trees were, she noted, quite overgrown by now. And the carefully placed grass tufts had spread, taking advantge of this climate’s unnaturally (to them) frequent rain. As a result they were less elegant and deliberate, and more randomly scattered across the rocky ground, planting themselves wherever they could gain purchase with their roots. It was a bit of a mess, if Fiera was being honest.

Not to mention since she last came in this area, something else came in as well and scattered some of the smaller stones around. Fiera supposed that it could have been little animals coming in and looking for food, but frankly she doubted it considering how high the walls around this part of the garden were and how much effort they would have to spend to get in here. Instead she suspected that it was more likely the weather that had moved these stones, whether it was storms lifting them up or encroaching ice pushing them around. Thankfully, it would be an easy fix- all she had to do was nudge them back into place. Still, that wasn’t the first task she wanted to set upon while she was here. It was on her list to be sure, but she definitely wanted to handle the issue of the plants first.

Thankfully, it looked like Lisan was already helping her out in that regard. As she turned around, she realized that the baakir had finally picked something to snack on, and was busy trimming the acacia trees. She’d pull a branch down with her long tongue and into her mouth, and would chew on it lazily until all of the branches were broken through and gone. Fiera nodded with approval- that certainly saved her having to go get a ladder to trim it herself. Not to mention those trees had all sorts of thorns and sharp branches on them, like most dry weather plants. If Lisan was happy to take care of it for her, then Fiera would by all means let her. With that sorted and out of the way, Fiera looked back at the rest of her rock garden, scanning the area for her next task.

She supposed the grass growing everywhere was the most egregrious thing she needed to “fix”. It wasn’t as much of a rock garden as a grass garden right now, and even if these were plants she normally liked having here, for the time being she was considering them “weeds” as opposed to one of her purposeful cultivars. “Guess I’d best get to it.” She said, opening up her bag. She had shoved a few gardening tools in there, but she really didn’t need any of the fancier ones right now. It’s not like she needed to dig holes to fill in with new plants, or till soil or rake leaves or any of that. No, all she needed right now was her own two hands so she could pull up plants, and for that she needed a garbage bag to put them in. She pulled one out and flapped it a few times to open it.

The sudden noise earned a flicked ear and a glance from Lisan, but overall the baakir didn’t seem all that upset by it. Fiera set it down on the ground and nodded before turning to the first chunk of grass. It was just a garbage bag- it didn’t need any special treatment or setup. She tugged on the grass and to her surprise, it didn’t come up as easily as she was expecting. She nearly broke off the entire top half of the first clump she had pulled on, and realized she needed to yank closer to the base instead. She sighed and went down on her knees, not wanting to ruin her back for this. A few sharp yanks later and she could feel it starting to loosen. She supposed the difference between the ease in pulling for this plant and most weeds was that most weeds were in soft soil.

These grass clumps however were in thick, rocky soil that didn’t move in the best of circumstances. Fiera wrestled with the grass clump for about a minute before finally managing to get it most of the way out of the ground. She was sure that there were probably still a few roots in there, clutching the sharp pebbles tightly, but she just couldn’t be bothered to dig down and peel them all off. They would probably die without the leaves anyway… probably. She tried not to think about it as she tossed the clump of grass into her garbage bag. For a moment, she was faintly jealous of Lisan. Which job was less miserable- trying to yank up chunks of grass that were determined to stay in their spot at all costs, or trimming tall trees with sharp thorns that would be happy to rain those down right on your face?

Looks like the weeds are just weeds. Perhaps your investigations will prove more fruitful in time.

After she finally managed to shove the last of that clump of grass into the garbage bag, Fiera moved on to the next clump. As she reached out for it though, something caught her eye next to one of those upturned stones she knew she’d have to put back. She sighed and leaned down to pick it up- it was probably another piece of garbage, flown in by the wind. Sure enough as she picked it up she noted that it looked like a plastic cup… but upon closer inspection she realized it wasn’t quite as it seemed. Instead of a regular plastic cup, it looked more like a pill bottle. Did someone lose their meds? As she rotated the label however, she noted that it was worn away mostly… but remembered where she had seen this familiar container before. This hadn’t been the first time she found something like this in her garden.

The last one had been in an odder place, a planter suspended above the ground, and when she had found out what was in it, she had been quite surprised. This was a lolatic jar, and a well intact one at that. She shook it slightly and heard the seed- or perhaps she should call it an egg- rattle around inside. Fiera knew that once she took it out it would quickly blossom into a small insectine creature that looked just like a leaf… or perhaps it WAS a leaf that happened to resemble an insect. Regardless, the speed at which they did so was impressive, and if there was more than one seed per jar Fiera knew that her home would be quickly overrun with them. They weren’t particularly clever creatures either, possessing a simple intellect and an easily irritated demeanor. Fiera hadn’t gotten around to training the one she had yet.

Though due to lolatics’ natural personalities, she doubted it would be easy to train anyway and she couldn’t think of much of a use for it. Still, lolatics weren’t considered regular “pets” anyway. Instead they were supposedly meant to be used in the breeding of lotines… though that was a rather pleasant way of putting it. Really, lolatics were parasites and the substances they imparted upon lotines in their parasitism had profound effects on their abilities to produce lola, the little floating creatures that Fiera had trained on occasion. Fiera hadn’t seen the effects yet however, and couldn’t really say what they were. Causing them to come out mutated? Bizarre? Fiera would guess ‘sickly’ but she had the feeling they wouldn’t be so sought after in lotine breeding if they had a definite negative effect on their hosts and products. So there had to be SOME benefit to letting these critters latch on and take what they pleased…

Still, Fiera already had one and couldn’t think of a use for this jar. She turned to her backpack and opened it before nestling the lolatic jar in a cranny (after making sure the lid was screwed on tight first, of course). Even if she didn’t have a use for it, she knew that there were plenty of people around the labs that would like it… or at least want to use it on their lotine. And Fiera was always a woman hunting for a profit. With that out of the way though, she could now get back to work on her garden, fixing it up. She glanced up to check on Lisan. The baakir was still making her way around the acacia tree, grabbing all of the leaves within the range of her neck. She still had quite a few to go, but Fiera knew that the tree would be perfectly trimmed by the time she finished.

Satisfied with what a hard worked Lisan was, Fiera got back to her own work. She reached out for the clump of grass she found the lolatic jar in and grabbed it from the base this time, careful to avoid the mistakes she had made before. She pulled slowly this time as well, trying to tease the roots off instead of risking the whole plant snapping off at the base. That worked a bit better to her relief, as the roots came into view one by one, the pebbles shaking off as she pulled. Some were still broken off instead of coming out cleanly, but she could accept that. All she wanted was this spare grass gone. She tossed that bunch into the garbage bag as well after she shook as many pebbles out of its roots as possible. It flopped into the bag without a fight, its effort apparently spent on trying to stay rooted.

As she worked, the breeze around Fiera picked up, to her delight. It was certainly a refreshing relief on Fiera’s skin, soothing the sensation of the intense heat around her and replacing it with a much more pleasant feeling against her face. Lisan didn’t seem to care either way, so overall it was a net positive. Or so she thought. As Fiera worked, creating a pile of grass that she would later put into the garbage bag, the bag behind her began to flutter. She didn’t notice it at first, as the sound of fluttering objects was common in a garden full of lush plants. Soon it started moving however, flitting into her peripheral vision. Her ear flicked and she looked over her shoulder in its direction, wondering where the sudden movement was coming from. Both ears flew straight up as she saw the bag begin to move away from her.
