Having trained Rusty some of the basics, Fanged felt more comfortable branching out and training some of her other pets. She had chosen Imogen, feeling closer to the Rakai than she had ever been before. She seemed like a good second pet to start with. Training Imogen her name should be an easy place to start. She had brought along some fresh meat which should provide an incentive for the Rakai to do the training. She waited for Imogen to busy herself. Training her name was also training a method to capture her attention. Thus, it helped if she wasn’t already focused on Fanged.
“Imogen!” the woman called out.
Imogen raised her head at the sound of Fanged’s voice. She might have been responding simply to the sound, but the woman figured that was a good enough start.
“Good girl! Here’s a treat!” Fanged was quick to provide the Rakai with a small strip of meat.
The Rakai was quick to react to the temptation of food. She leaned forward and daintily accepted the treat from her owner. Fanged beamed at her, waiting for Imogen to finish the treat before she’d try out her name again. She took a few steps back from Imogen, ignoring the hopeful looks for more treats. Imogen soon gave up when it was clear she wasn’t getting more treats. She soon became preoccupied with smelling the various new plants that she came across in the training area.
“Imogen!” Fanged called out once again.
This time, when the Rakai glanced up, Fanged made sure to keep clear eye contact with her pet. When Imogen nearly looked away, the woman clicked her tongue, trying to keep her attention a little bit longer.
“That’s a good job! I think that deserves another treat!” Fanged declared.
She cut off another strip of meat and handed it over to the Rakai.
Imogen was a much slower eater than Rusty was. The Lazaru tended to inhale his food. Imogen chewed it daintily and cleaned her paws if they happened to get dirty. When she was finished, she turned away from Fanged, already accepting that if she wanted more treats she would need to work some more. Fanged waited a few moments, once again placing a bit of distance between her and the Rakai. When she was ready, she called Imogen’s name again.
The Rakai raised her head at the noise. She stared at Fanged, keeping eye contact with the woman until Fanged looked away. When she had, she leaned over and gave Imogen a quick scratch behind the ears.
“That’s exactly right!” she declared. “You’re doing such a good job!”
She then slipped the Rakai another strip of meat. She didn’t want to be too reliant on food for training the creature, but it was a necessity at the beginning.
Fanged still found herself insecure in her training abilities. She wasn’t yet entirely comfortable around lab-created beings, having lived solitary for such a long time. She couldn’t help but intrinsically feel that she was doing something wrong when it came to her pets. For now, she could only continue as she was and hope that Imogen would be trained somewhat effectively.
“Imogen!” Fanged called out again.
The Rakai glanced up at her a bit more quickly than she had before. Fanged felt a rush of happiness enter her body. “That exactly right!” She stretched her arm down to the Rakai and gave her a quick scratch behind the ears.
Imogen leaned into her touch. The start of their relationship might have been a bit rocky, but they had developed a close bond with time. Hopefully with that increased trust, Fanged wouldn’t have to rely so heavily on treats when training her Rakai.
She was beginning to feel more confident that Imogen had practically learned her name. First, she would need to test her a few more times before she could be completely sure. She took a few steps back, creating a few meters of distance between the two of them. If she could understand her name from further away, then Fanged would be confident that she’d learned it. When Imogen was distracted, Fanged took that opportunity to test out her name.
“Imogen!” she called out, trying to capture Imogen’s attention again.
The Rakai looked at Fanged, inching closer to close the distance between them. She held eye contact with Fanged, earning her swift praise from the girl. Though there wouldn’t be another treat given, the woman reached down and ran her hand down Imogen’s body in a soothing, stroking motion. Imogen reacted with a contented sigh and flopped down into a sitting position. Now it was time to move on to the next trick.
Now that Fanged was content that Imogen knew her name, she would try teaching her no. No was an important command as it would make further training easier. If Imogen did a trick wrong, Fanged could tell her no and teach her the correct way to do a trick. But first, she'd need to learn no. Fanged found that using food to teach no was effective, so she would be trying out that method again. She got a strip of meat prepared, making sure that Imogen saw her hold the tasty treat in the palm of her hand. Imogen's attention was captured, and she followed the woman she she stepped into an open area. Fanged put the treat down, keeping eye contact with the Rakai as she did so. When Imogen moved to take the meat, Fanged reached over and held the Rakai back with her hand.
Imogen squirmed as Fanged held her back. She was clearly displeased with the restriction, but there wasn’t much she could do about it. She had to simply wait until Fanged released her. Immediately, she tried to make a dash for the food.
“Imogen, no!” Fanged sharply said.
The Rakai went stiff in her grasp, not quite understanding why Fanged was preventing her from reaching the meat. When she relaxed, the woman released her. Fanged didn’t stop her as the Rakai moved over to the treat and snatched it up. She understood that if she didn’t let Imogen have the food at this point, she would lose all interest in training. After that treat was gone, Fanged cut off another piece of meat as additional incentive for Imogen. When the Rakai move to take that treat as well, Fanged was quick to stop her.
“No!” Fanged scolded her.
She then placed out a hand and blocked Imogen from reaching the treat once again.
Imogen struggled for a moment against Fanged’s grip, but she was quicker to give up now. When she stopped resisting entirely, Fanged removed her hand. Imogen shook her fur out and gave her chest a few quick licks to smooth the ruffles. She then turned to Fanged and shot her a dirty look. She then turned back to the treat and went to snatch it up. Before she could reach it, Fanged was quick to give her the command again in a clear voice.
“No!” Fanged scolded her.
This time, the woman didn’t physically prevent the Rakai from reaching the treat. She needed to test if Imogen would listen to the command world alone. To her surprise, Imogen halted in her tracks as though expecting Fanged to physically prevent her from obtaining the treat.
“Good girl Imogen! That’s exactly right!” This time she used praise to reinforce the behaviour she wanted to see.
Imogen accepted the praise and was quick to dart over and grab the treat once she was allowed to. Fanged was pleased with her progress and she took a moment to try and think up a new way to test the trick. Using food was effective, but telling Imogen not to take food wouldn’t be the only time she’d need to tell her no. While she was thinking, Fanged began to absentmindedly run her hands through Imogen’s fur. When Fanged stopped petting her, Imogen began to nudge her hands, trying to get them to resume the motion. When the woman failed to comply, Imogen nipped at her fingers.
“No, Imogen! That’s bad behaviour!” Fanged scolded her.
She removed herself completely from Imogen, feeling bad about freezing out her affection, but not wanting to encourage Imogen to continue her bad behaviour. Imogen at least had the decency to look apologetic. After enough time had passed, Fanged gave Imogen a quick pat on the head.
With Imogen having decent training learning the word no, Fanged would need to try out the command one last time to see if she had fully learned it. She decided she would switch back to food training, but she would test Imogen with a test that lasted a little longer than the others. She grabbed a giant chunk of meat and placed it on the ground while Imogen was distracted.
“Imogen!” she called out to capture the Rakai’s attention.
Imogen raised her head and looked at Fanged, confused as to why the woman had called her. She scanned her surroundings, quickly noticing the piece of meat on the ground. She was skeptical of the treat, having learned that Fanged did not want her to eat treats freely, but she was still determined to take it. A stubborn streak that would need to be trained out of her further down the road. When she was close enough to take the food, Fanged was quick to tell her to stop.
“Imogen, no!” she called out.
The Rakai was quick to stop, albeit rather begrudgingly. Fanged still considered this a success and was ready to move onto the next trick.
Now that Imogen had learned the command no, Fanged decided that the next trick she’d teach her was to come when she whistled. She felt as though she was getting the hang of training, but she was still a little unsure of herself. She grabbed a piece of meat, making sure that Imogen couldn’t see as she did so. She then took a few steps back from the Rakai.
“Imogen!” she called out the Rakai’s name to capture her attention.
Imogen raised her head and glanced curiously at Fanged. With her gaze still fixed on Fanged, the woman raised her fingers to her mouth and let out a sharp whistle. Imogen wasn’t sure why the woman had made that noise, but she certainly found it interesting. Fanged then opened up the palm of her hand, revealing the treat hidden inside. Immediately, Imogen was intrigued and trotted over to investigate the treat.
Fanged gave her the treat once she was close enough to take it. If she could get Imogen to associate the sound of her whistling, with getting a treat, she’d be more inclined to come towards her when she heard the whistle. Imogen accepted the treat and eagerly gobbled it up. Food was a good way to motivate a creature to complete their training. She waited for Imogen to grow distracted one again. She needed to make the Rakai work for her reward, she’d need to increase the distance between them. She spotted an open area near a patch of sunlight. Fanged decided to head towards there, glad that she would have a chance to soak up some winter sunlight for a moment. She then raised her hand and whistled once again. Imogen raised her head at the sound, her ears pricked forward and her gaze alert. It took her a moment to locate Fanged.
When Imogen saw her, Fanged showed her another treat. If she wanted that one, she’d have to walk a decent distance for a creature so small. Imogen was tempted by the treat, but she also didn’t want to walk so much. Eventually, the temptation was too strong and she slowly started to make her way over to the woman. It took her a while, but when she reached Fanged, the woman was quick to praise her.
“That’s a good girl, Imogen! Here’s the treat!”
She handed the Rakai the treat, glad that the creature was still interested in food. It certainly made things a bit easier. Imogen was quick to eat, her appetite seemingly endless.
“Alright, I’ll need to ramp up the difficulty. That should help to keep you from getting bored while reinforcing your knowledge of the trick.”
Fanged scouted out the next area that she would stand. This time, she’d try and hide herself from view.
There was a tree that was a short distance away. It was a pine tree, so it should work adequately to conceal her. She hid herself behind the tree, making sure that Imogen couldn’t see her. When she was ready, she used her fingers to whistle once again. This time, there was no treat for Imogen to see, so the noise alone would have to suffice in attracting the Rakai towards her. Just when Fanged was certain she was going to have to whistle again, a small head turned around the corner of the tree and an playful bark greeted her.
“Good girl, Imogen! You’re such a clever girl!” Fanged reaped praise onto the creature. She leaned close and gave her a good scratch behind the ears.
There would be no treat for her this time, but that didn’t mean their training was done. She would need to test her knowledge of the trick some more.
