Houluh Breeding Tutorial

Houluh are the First species of True Mammals produced by the labs, and as such a free breedable on the forums. However, they do take a special process in order to be in compliance with the Houluh Breeder's Society and Regulations put in place to prevent puppy milling.

The first thing that is required for anyone wishing to breed houluh is to Register their Kennel.

This Registration is done by posting in character in a Breeding Center thread that will be somewhat like the Gym thread for getting a membership.

A Kennel is registered once the user files their unique 'Kennel Name'. This kennel name can be anything, but cannot be identical to another individual's kennel name- and each account may only ever have one kennel. Once a Kennel Name is chosen, can only be changed rarely- think account/character changes.

Examples: Rocket Surgery Kennels, Russet Pine Ranch, The Stutterfield Enterprise, Big Dog Estate, ect. (Literally anything, but it needs to sound 'kennel-y'.)

At the same time as registering their 'Kennel Name' the user applies for a 'Prefix'. This prefix is used for ANY houluh that belongs to their kennel. Think of it as a prefix to a registered name! This is their 'one' prefix forever, and though it can be anything I personally suggest something to do with the kennel.

Examples: RSK's, Russet Pine's, Stutterfield's, Big Dog Estate's (Needs to have something to do with your kennels, even if it is tangential.)

Each person will then be given an Official Houluh Kennel License. At this point, they can start their journey! Breeding Houluh is far more involved than breeding Orbaru or Pachee, but is perhaps a little less involved than breeding Sarane. ;3

The Official Houluh Kennel License will be required to be posted for each person whenever they are Showing or Breeding their prized Houluh, and their kennel name will need to be stated along with providing the image.

TL;DR-

1. Apply [here] to get your Kennel official. Fill out the forms in character in a single post.

2. Pick a kennel name.

3. Pick a Prefix that sounds good to you.

4. You will then be given an Official Houluh Kennel License.

Step Two: Obtaining Houluh

Once the individual has gotten an Official Houluh Kennel License, they need to look over their houluh stock. If they do not have any houluh, I suggest either visiting the Houluh Adoption Agency to select a pup, or perhaps purchasing a Token of Fidelity in order to get a randomized pup.

The Houluh Adoption Agency is a very important institution that exists to keep Houluh breeding healthy genetically and accessible to everyone. Every litter is required to donate one puppy to the Houluh Adoption Agency, and this puppy cannot be adopted by either of the breeders unless it has been in the HAA for more than four months. The HAA keep up with what happens to the puppy after it was adopted, and will have rules in place to keep unscrupulous practices from occurring.

Tokens of Fidelity can be bought in the Contest Hall with prize points, one every four months. When turned in, you will be given one completely randomized houluh puppy! Tokens of Fidelity can be bought and sold before being used, but not after! Tokens of Fidelity are one use only.

So now you have houluh stock! There are many things you can do with your puppies. The first is training them, and training is VERY important for houluh breeding! You may also give your pup a 'call name'- that is your pup's name. It's just like any other name on the site, and doesn't have to be unique.

A puppy can grow to a juvie at any time, you are allowed to do this on your own at any time you prefer, as they are grow your own. You probably received both the baby and the juvie form at the same time upon delivery, litter picking, or adoption (unless you received an original houluh on the old site).

In order to start the process of breeding, your houluh needs to Grow to Adult!

In order to receive your adult houluh image, Your puppy will need to be taught 15 TP worth of tricks, moves, or abilities. At this point, you are allowed to register with the Contest Hall to 'show' your puppy! Showing is certainly a contest, but will not be arduous.

When Registering your Houluh with the Contest Hall for it's 'Debutante Show' (first show) please come up with a 'Show Name' for your houluh. A Show name is a fancy sounding name that belongs only to your houluh! They must be unique, but don't have to do with the call name at all. You don't have to teach your houluh it's show name, it is for registry purposes only.

At this point, please check your houluh for it's sex, for breeding purposes. Houluh typically have one of two sexes for the purposes of breeding (though your houluh's gender may be different) these are known as Matronne (carries the puppies) and Patronne (fertilizes the ovum). Please tell us whether your houluh is indeed for the purposes of breeding Matronne or Patronne.

During the first show, you are only expected to show off a few of your houluh's tricks, moves, or abilities- and you will receive either a Matronne di Marq, or a Patronne di Marq. This will LOCK IN your houluh's sex for breeding purposes (think drakes vs hens, orbed vs non-orbed orbaru, or the slits and pollen of the pachee) and it will be recorded.

At this point, your Adult Houluh image and di Marq will be given to you, as well as a genetic test of your houluh for breeding purposes!

Remember that this process must be repeated for EACH houluh!

You are now ready to breed your first houluh! You will be given an Official Houluh Breeder's License.

TL;DR-
1. Get a Houluh Pup.
-You can use a Token of Fidelity to get a randomized pup if you want.
-You can buy a pup from another user.
-You can adopt a pup from the HAA if they have some.
2. Train the pup 15 TP worth of tricks/moves/abilties.
3. Go to the Contest Hall to input your houluh into a Debutante show.
-Tell us whether the houluh is Matronne (carries pups) or Patronne (fertilizes)
-Come up with a unique Show Name for the houluh
4. Have your houluh perform some tricks/moves/abilities (doesn't have to be a ton) in the show.
5. Your houluh's adult image will be sent to you after the show, along with a marker for it's sex for breeding purposes.

BREAK: Genetics

What is that string of letters that you received when Fido grew up? The Breeding Center and the Contest Hall have partnered to do genetic testing on your houluh to make it easier for you to breed a lineage that interests you!

The first thing you will notice is that the [Genealogy] of your houluh has been recorded in the Genealogy Area. Inbreeding is frowned upon within three generations back of your houluh, but don't worry; the pups won't come out mutated or dead. Please try to keep inbreeding minimal within three generations back, however.

The second thing that we must talk about is your Houluh's 'Coat Genes'. These are much simpler than they look!

The 'B Locus' tells whether your houluh is going to be black, or liver. Black is dominant, so BB and Bb are black. bb Is liver!
The 'R Locus' tells whether your houluh's 'red' genes are going to cover the black up. Red is partially dominant! RR means the dog will appear Red. Rr means the houluh will have red 'points', sort of like a doberman. rr Means that the dog shows no red at all.
The 'D Locus' tells whether your houluh is going to have a diluted, or a lightened, coat. Dilution is recessive, so DD and Dd means no dilution. dd Means that the houluh will have a lightened coat!

So a string of 'bbDDRr' would make a Liver Houluh with Red Points. A string of 'BbddRR' would make a Tan Houluh. A string of 'BBDdrr' Would make a Black Houluh.

For those that Know 'Dog Speak':

BB, Bb = Black

bb = Liver (Chocolate, Brown)

RR = Red (Usually Fox Red, may be Golden Rarely)

Rr = Whatever the 'B Locus is' + Red Points

rr = Shows the 'B Locus' color only

DD, Dd = No change

dd = Turns Black to Blue, Liver to Lilac, and Red to a Tan.

Your Houluh will probably have a white or cream marking on it somewhere. These so called 'White Markings' (even if they are cream in your houluh!) lay on top of the undercoat. They vary in amount and type of white coverage. A litter usually has White Marking coverage that is between that of the Matronne and Patronne, but sometimes it may seem a little wonky!

Your pup's eye color probably is the common one for the base. However, you may find other eye colors rarely produced, or even shown on your randomized houluh pups!

Other markings can also be found on houluh, and some of them ONLY show up on Black Bases, White Markings, or Red bases! Dilution can effect these markings as well.

With astute breeding practices, you may be able to produce a lineage of pups with your favorite markings more often than not!

Note that your houluh's coat markings and color WILL effect Fertility Rates. We will discuss that in the breeding chapter!

What about my Celestial or Zephyr Houluh? Can those be bred?

YES! In fact, you should! Celestial and Zephyr houluh do some interesting things in genetics, and can always breed the maximum number of slots since they don't have fancy coats. While your Zephyr or Celestial won't have a 'string of letters' or 'genetics', they do pass genetics. ;3

Breeding Basics

So, your Houluh has been grown to adult! You are most of the way to breeding.

Your houluh has it's breeding sex for the purposes of breeding locked. Each breeding requires a Matronne and a Patronne to work. Breedings must occur in the breeding center. Your may ONLY breed your houluh to another adult houluh, AND your houluh cannot breed with another houluh owned by you. That is right, you have to pair up with another individual! This is meant to keep the breeding pool open, and to keep this feature accessible to everyone.

There are only TWO exceptions to this rule. Once every 4 months, you can loan out your houluh to another user (MUST be a different player than you!) in order to breed within your own kennel. You may also, once every 4 months, loan one of your houluh to another one of your accounts OR breed between two of your own accounts, each with separate kennels. Both of these exceptions have SEPARATE cooldowns. To recap: you can breed with another user, using two of your own houluh, every 4 months. You can breed between your own accounts (by loan or separate kennels) every 4 months.

A Houluh's number of Breedings allowed in it's life span are Limited by the rarity of it's coat colors in a standardized system! You are given the amount of times your houluh can breed due to it's coat rarity at the time of it's growth to adult. If you bred your houluh all of the Breedings it is allowed, then you can still use your pet for other purposes, but it cannot be bred again. Note that a 'Token of Fidelity' can be used to give your houluh one more breeding each time one is used, but that Token of Fidelity will be permanently used up (cannot also be used to buy a randomized puppy).

Please name your Breeding Center thread 'Houluh Breeding'.

When you are breeding, please include the following information in your first post:

[Matronne Image] x [Patronne Image]

Show name of Matronne x Show name of Patronne

# of Breeding for Matronne

# of Breeding for Patronne

You must make 20 posts per breeding in the breeding center. When you are done, put 'Done' in your breeding thread's title. Then, you must wait. A Matronne may have the pups quickly, or after a while- it will depend on how quickly the art can be done. The litter will be posted at the end of the thread; there will always be three pups. The two breeders must decide which puppies they want, and each one can only pick one! The third puppy will be donated to the Houluh Adoption Agency.

Upon picking, your pup will be sent to you, with it's juvie image.

-Houluh Do NOT inherit moves/abilities from their parents.
-The third pup is donated to the Houluh Adoption Agency.
-The third pup can only be adopted by one of the breeders* IF it has been there without getting picked for four months.
-You are NOT allowed to intimidate, beg, or whine about that third puppy. If someone wants it, then they can pick it up without harassment.

*This includes secondary accounts. Your secondary accounts can't adopt the puppy either.

As for the Houluh Adoption Agency, Please do not hoard puppies. If you adopt a puppy from the Houluh Adoption Agency, you are expected to do 8 TP worth of training with it within 1 Calendar Month of adopting the pup. If you do not, the pup will be re-possessed by the HAA.**
**This rule will not be imposed on people's pups if they were bred and selected by the breeder, gifted, or already owned; ONLY if adopted from the HAA. This is to prevent stagnation and snatching of all of the puppies, which is frowned upon. These puppies will hopefully be used by future breeders!
To keep folks from hoarding puppies from the HAA, you may only adopt one puppy at a time. If your last puppy from the HAA isn't at 10 TP worth of training, you cannot adopt another one until the last one is at 10 TP.

TL;DR - Breeding:

1. You must have a Matronne or Patronne.

2. You must partner with someone else that has the other (Matronne or Patronne) from what you picked.

3. You must make a post in the Breeding Center with the above required information.

4. You must make 20 posts altogether.

5. 3 Pups will be born, you both get a pick, and the third is sent to the Houluh Adoption Agency.

6. Don't be a butt to people that want to adopt that third puppy from the Houluh Adoption Agency.

7. Remember that houluh have limited numbers of breedings due to coat rarity!

-A Token of Fidelity can be used to give your houluh another breeding, but that uses up the Token of Fidelity.

Houluh Adoption Agency:

1. When adopting a pup from the HAA, remember to train 8 TP worth of tricks/moves/abilities within a calendar month of adoption.

2. If a pup hasn't been adopted from the HAA in four months, THEN the breeders can adopt the pup.

3. Do not harass people over the pups that have been put in the HAA.

4. You cannot adopt another puppy from the HAA until the last puppy you adopted from there has 10 TP worth of tricks/moves/abilities.

Breeding: Slots

Houluh can only breed a certain amount of times per each individual; and this depends on their rarity level.
Rarity level depends on colors and are found on a scale.

0 points = 4 breedings per life
1-3 points = 3 breedings per life
4-5 points = 2 breedings per life
6+ points = 1 breeding per life

Six is super rare, basically, and super hard to get.
Houluh from 1-3 are less rare, so this is a bonus to them.

(Points per Colors and Markings)
Basic Zephyr or Celestial: Automatic 0
+0 Points: Any White Marking not listed Below, Black Base, Red Base
+1 Points: Hooded, Snowflake, Irish, Liver Base, Red Points/Tan Points, Brindled, Racer Stripes, Comet
+2 Points: Tan Base, Isabella Base, Blue Base
+3 Points: Dalmatian Markings, Tweed/Merle Markings

EX: So if you have a Isabella (+2) houluh with Tanpoints (+1) and Irish White Marking (+1), then you have (4) points and the houluh has 2 breedings per life.

You will be told if your houluh has any of the Rare White Markings, as well as the other markings.

Note: Don't fret! More breeding slots per Houluh can be gotten by trading in a Token of Fidelity per slot!

Example

This is Cocoa (an NPC Houluh). She is a Matronne with a Liver Coat, Red Points, and White Snips. Her genetics are bbDdRr.
She has a point value of '2' thanks to her Liver coat and Red Points, so she has three breeding slots during her lifetime.
If her NPC owner wanted to breed her more times, they would have to trade a Token of Fidelity in for an extra slot each time.

Advanced Houluh Husbandry

Anyone can breed houluh, with enough work. But do you have what it takes to take this hobby to the next level?

It is not uncommon for people to show their houluh in ONLY the Debutante Shows. This is, after all, all you need to aspire to in order to breed your beloved hound!

However, that is not the only function of Houluh! If you want to push the bar, you can show your Houluh in a Salonne Show! Each Salonne has a different 'focus'. These focuses may cater to certain disciplines, but only take Houluh contestants!

List of Salonne Types:

Agility (Focuses on Dexterity and Feats of Agility)

Strength (Focuses on Power and Feats of Strength)

Working (Focuses on Hunting or Guard workers, as well as those that do other work for their owners)

Loyalty (Focuses on the bond between owner and Houluh)

Witts (Focuses on what the Houluh knows how to do)

As long as at least three Houluh enter and competes, they will run! Only Adult Houluh may compete!

The good thing is that the Salonne shows do confer Contest Hall Points to all that compete in the show ring. So even if your houluh doesn't win, you can be rewarded!

In order to enter a Salonne, check the Contest Hall for an open one. Then submit your houluh like you would any pet into the Registration. After the Registration period has ended, the Show Ring will start! At this point, please post as much as you would like, having your Houluh do things that you believe pertains to the type of Salonne. There is no voting period for Salonne Shows! That means that your houluh will be judged on merit (points) alone!

At this point, based on merit alone, the sole winner will receive the coveted Houluh Maestre di Marq ribbon for their specific Houluh winner! Once a specific houluh has one the Maestre di Marq, that houluh can never be run in a Salonne again. This is the highest Marq a houluh can receive!

The Maestre di Marq confers upon a houluh a specific boon during breedings; The offspring sometimes show very rare traits that only come from an exceptional parent such as one that can win this prestigious reward! These include several genetics that do not at all show up on regular houluh ever.

The 'Offering To Order' is an item that only those that have won a Salonne can buy with Contest Hall Prize Points. It is an illustrious thing that can certainly gain the attention of the Goddess Order if it was offered to her... Houluh were originally created and dedicated in honor of Order; rarely she will show favoritism to those that show off her preferred characteristics the most!

They give a particularly nice boon to the puppies of a single breeding when used; but are one-time use per item. It is said that puppies born under the Boon of Order herself become as swift as the wind itself, and exhibit the most exquisite fur!
