Magic made them very uncomfortable. There was a weird old place near the park that they had always thought was an equal mix of interesting and unsettling. Most people just referred to it by its most distinguishing feature: the mansion. It was indeed a mansion, but to say that a mansion was all it was would be misinformed at best. Silver never did trust the place, but they couldn’t tear themselves away. As it turned out, they were far more curious than afraid. They were comfortable enough in their ability to stay alive that they brought a cute but harmless little creature with them. A Faerell was resting on top of their head with her butt on their shoulder. Her long tail swished back and forth, slightly tickling the back of their neck. She was curious as well, and immediately started looking around and sniffing the air as they approached the strange magical manor. 1[84.3 - 0.2]

Normally, Silver would spend quite a bit of time outside the doors of the mansion. There were often interesting things speckled amongst the scenery if one could be bothered to look closely enough. Not to mention that old well just outside the grounds. Even from this far away, they could feel it pulling at some yet undescribed part of them.
The gardens were usually interesting, if not always beautiful, but for now they would have to wait. It was dreadfully cold outside and Silver wanted to get themselves and their Faerell inside as soon as possible. Not that anything about the building suggested it would be warmer on the inside. That might be expecting too much, they thought.
Tiffy was not the least bit engaged in what was happening around them. There weren’t any cute bugs flying by to chase, so she settled into Silver’s hair and made a soft contented sound. She did wonder what they were up to, but she figured that she would find out soon enough without having to cause any trouble.

Silver stood outside the door to the mansion for a moment to admire the decor. Perhaps they were just uneasy about stepping inside and trying to hide it. Either way they lingered there for what must have been entirely too long. A deep shiver shook them out of it. It was cold outside. Somehow, they had forgotten that, if only for a moment.
They were glad for the gloves they wore as they pushed open the door with its metal handle. Surely it would have given them a burn if they touched it with bare skin. They used their free hand to rub Tiffy and check that she was still okay. That was it, their last excuse to leave.
The door clunked closed behind them, urged along by what Silver sincerely hoped was the wind. They hated to think that the mansion itself had done it on purpose. The loud sound it made caused Tiffy to jump a bit, and she grabbed a pawful of their hair for support.

“Ah, it’s alright,” Silver said aloud. They needed to say it as much as Tiffy needed to hear it. They stroked her back a few times to smooth out her ruffled fur and convince her that everything would be alright. She was clever enough to soon realize that she was in no real danger, so she went back to laying across their shoulders and lazily looking around.
The foyer was huge and would probably be intimidating if not for all the cutesy decor. Silver plucked a flower out of a vase near the doorway and smiled at it. The color was one that was entirely too familiar. It seemed like it could be a trick, but they were amused by it anyhow. There was no way a magical building could… know.
The flower was the first interesting thing that Tiffy had seen so far. She gingerly stretched her neck out so that she could smell it. It smelled like dust. She sneezed noisily and wrinkled up her face in disgust.

“Yea, I think you’re right,” Silver said. They were more than happy to drop the flower back into the vase and move on. If it was a clever trick of some kind, they hadn’t fallen for it, thanks to Tiffy’s quick thinking.
As usual when they visited this place, they had no idea where to begin. All of the hallways no doubt led to other hallways and strange rooms that were impossible to visit twice. It would all be very unsettling if not for the fact that they had never actually been harmed there. Well, there was that one incident with the fireworks, but they felt safe to assume there would be no fireworks this time around.
Silver loved tea, so they followed the sound of a whistling kettle that had been screaming since they arrived. Did they set it off by walking inside, or had it been screeching for nobody to hear for much longer than that? A mystery worth pursuing, they thought. Tiffy rubbed snot out of her nose onto Silver’s shirt, but they seemed not to notice.

Tiffy hopped down off Silver’s shoulder and went off after something in a totally different direction from the whistling kettle. They couldn’t just leave her alone to wander around the place by herself, so they followed her to see what she was up to. Under a desk near the door were a few old objects that caught their attention. Tiffy thought that they were interesting, too.
Silver reached down to see what the things were. It was some old flowery wreath, excellently preserved actually, a strange old doll, and a glass rose. What was with all of the flowers? Actually, they didn’t want to know. They did, however, pick up the glass rose and the doll and shove them into the pack.
They had no idea whether or not they’d be useful later, but there was no harm in carrying them along for now. As long as they weren’t haunted or anything. Actually that doll did look kind of haunted now that they thought about it.

Tiffy picked at the wreath, playing with the flowers and trying to pry one loose. She was unsuccessful. She liked it, though, and continued to play with it, jumping around and chewing on it like she would with a really good toy. Silver hadn’t considered bringing the wreath along, but since she seemed to like it so much, they had no choice.
“Okay, but you have to carry it,” Silver said. It was a joke of course. She probably couldn’t carry it even if she tried. She wasn’t very big. She chirped loudly and started to chew on one of the leaves. Surprisingly, it held up to her relentless efforts. From what they could see so far, it was a nice tough toy that she would surely get some entertainment out of, so it was worth bringing along for now.
Silver reached down and picked up the wreath, tossing it over their shoulder where it could hang. They attempted to pick up Tiffy, too, but she was already a step ahead of them. She bolted up their clothing to rest on their shoulder yet again.

The kettle was still whistling through all of that, so Silver knew where they were going to go next. If they were incredibly lucky, it would end in a cup of tea. Wouldn’t that be nice? They smiled softly while thinking about it. A nice peaceful cup of tea in a creepy old mansion decorated like the set of a horror show.
Did they even have any tea? Silver thought about the contents of their bag, which they often had a good mental list of even despite the huge amount of mostly useless things in it. They were concerned that they had run out of the tea they were thinking of last time they wanted some, but they couldn’t actually remember. Well, whatever was in there would have to do, and who knows? Maybe the mansion had some totally-not-poison-tea to go with its screaming kettle.
Tiffy was rubbing her ears since the sound of the screeching bothered her sensitive hearing. She wiped her face and scratched at her head thinking that any of those things might help her, but they didn’t.

As soon as they walked through a door, it was like a portal to another dimension. This time an elaborate sitting room with dusty sunlight trickling in. It reminded them of Alura, somewhat, and the way her shop smelled. It was full of even more weird flowers, none of which they thought were likely to be real.
The kettle was there on the stove, screaming away and letting a jet of hot steam into the air. The strange thing was that there was no fire underneath it. Not even a hot iron of some kind. Silver was skeptical about this weird teapot, but they also had a feeling that if they didn’t acknowledge it, it would keep whistling forever.
Tiffy was getting more visibly agitated as they approached the source of the noise. Silver idly rubbed her head for her, hoping to comfort her a bit. “Just a moment,” they said. “I’ll fix it.” Would they? Like everything else here, they were highly suspicious that this could be an elaborate trick.

Silver finally lifted the kettle off the stove, and the screeching slowed though it didn’t cease completely. It was with the kettle in their hands that they realized they had no tea set with which to use it. As if someone heard them think that, a glimmer of light reflected off of something on the dining table.
They walked over to the table with the kettle, careful to keep Tiffy from getting too close to it. Now that it had quieted down, she was less frustrated and more curious. She wanted to touch it, but she listened when Silver encouraged her not to.
An elaborate set of cups and saucers had been set out across the large table. They weren’t so certain that those things were there when they came in the room, but they were willing to play along. First, they set the kettle down on the thick fabric where it belonged and rummaged around in their bag for some tea to share with the ghosts.

There were a few kinds of tea sitting in the bottom of their bag, somehow miraculously uncrushed by the variety of other objects in there, but none of them seemed appropriate for the situation. If only they could find… ah, there it was! The sack that they kept the dried black tea in was stuffed inside of a broken toy ball for some reason. It had a bit of someone’s spit on it, but they didn’t mind. They shook off the pouch and set it gently on the table.
It was almost comical how shoddy their weathered old pouch looked sitting next to the elaborate tea set. It was dingey and grey against a sea of gold trim and hand painted pottery. They didn’t mind, of course, but they did wonder if whoever they were having the tea party with would.
Tiffy was curious what was in the pouch, so she leaped onto the table and snatched it up. She put it in her mouth but immediately spat it back out. It smelled a little bit like food, but it definitely did not taste like food.

“You have to wait for it to steep first,” Silver said. They took the pouch back from Tiffy and continued working on it as though nothing happened. She wrinkled her face into a frown now that she didn’t have her not so good snack to chew on. She hated it, but she was still mad that she didn’t have it any more.
Tiffy sat down on one of the teacups and ignored the fact that she nearly sent it crashing right off the table. She was curious about what Silver was doing with the dried up plants in a bag. She sat upright as if she were asking for a treat and watched intently while they worked.
They carefully shook the leaves into the various cups, walking around the table to set all of the settings. Except for the cup that Tiffy’s tail was currently in, of course. They thought that the mansion might not mind if they were just one cup short of a party.

It was time for the kettle, finally. It had finally stopped screaming since it was no longer boiling. They tried not to think too much about how it boiled without heat in the first place. Silver was careful as they lifted the kettle and emptied it across all of the cups. No matter how many they filled, the kettle never got lighter. One of that size should only fill half that many cups, but they had a feeling it would have exactly enough for all of the cups no matter what they did.
Tiffy reached out to stick her paw in one of the cups, but she could feel the heat coming off of it before she actually made contact with the hot water. She yanked her paw away, and the lesson was learned before she hurt herself. She rubbed her paws together and looked up at Silver again. They were frowning slightly as though they weren’t sure what to do. She made a soft noise to get their attention.
