The room opened out into a long, narrow room with a table in the middle. The table had a few candelabras on it, but nothing else. Silver wondered why the candles on the table weren’t lit like the ones in the other room.
As they left the safety of the light from the other room, they noticed how dark this one was in contrast. The only light in this room was what was left over from the last one. It flickered against the doorframe, hardly making its way in. Their eyes and some of the fur on their tail began to glow a bit to compensate.
Looks like they would have to use their magic after all. “Shield your eyes,” Silver said to Meredith. She did not do that, of course, instantly curious the second they hinted that there would be something interesting to observe. How could she possibly miss out on something they insisted she didn’t look at? Insanity.

“Serious,” they said, pulling her little hands up to her face. She peeked through the cracks in her fingers, which they noticed, but figured would be good enough.
Silver reached up toward the sky and sparkles began to coalesce in their palms, like rain collecting into a puddle. Once there were enough little sparks, they suddenly snapped together into a single mote of light. There was a brief, bright flash before the light settled into something more manageable. It was about as bright as a small torch, just enough to navigate by.
They breathed a sigh of relief, pleased that they were able to cast the spell without any trouble, and glad that the magic of the room itself didn’t see fit to extinguish it. Sometimes their own magic was futile against that of the mansion, but in this case everything had turned out okay. It was just a little ball of light, after all, what could be the harm in that.

Meredith blinked forcefully a few times to shake the brightness out of her head. So that was why they insisted that she cover her eyes. Looking directly at the magic while it was coming together made her eyes hurt. She rubbed her eyes with the back of her hands to soothe them.
“Sorry. I know. It’s not nice.” They wanted to say ‘I tried to warn you’, but they didn’t want to add insult to injury. She had learned her lesson, one way or the other, and hopefully she would take it into account for next time. At least there was no real harm done.
Meredith blinked a few last times, then finally got a chance to look around the room. It was pretty boring. Were they all this boring? So far she had seen two rooms and both of them had pretty much nothing in them. Hopefully it would pick up from here. At least the magic was cool?

The light in the room allowed her to better understand her surroundings, which was nice. The darkness that filled it before now was so overwhelming that it was impossible to see through, even for a nocturnal creature. Sadly, there wasn’t much to look at as the room appeared mostly empty save the table and chairs at its center.
A glimmer of red could be seen on the floor under the table. It stood out brightly against the dull grey floor. Meredith pointed to indicate that she had found something. She swelled with pride at her own cleverness and said, “See!”
“See what?” Silver said, looking down. They didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. She didn’t have a very good vocabulary yet, so it was difficult for her to express herself. As someone usually doing these trips with dogs, dragons, and other strange things, Silver didn’t mind that much. They’d figure it out one way or another.

Meredith continued to gesture, wiggling her finger as if that helped the process somehow. Silver tilted their head one way, then the other to see if that would help them understand her perspective. To their surprise, it actually worked. They noted a bit of red on the ground near the table as well.
“Oh!” they said in surprise. “Do you think we should get a closer look?” they asked. If it were up to them they would investigate instantly, as they were quite a curious sort, but they wanted her to feel like this was her adventure, too. Plus, asking her a lot of questions would help to improve her Common skills.
“Look,” Meredith said with a confident nod. She wanted to see what it was. The anticipation was killing her. She adjusted herself so that she was ever so slightly closer to seeing what she had found without falling down.

Silver kneeled down next to the table and reached out with their free hand to inspect the red object. It was relatively flat, like a piece of paper or similar. As they got closer, they finally realized it was a leaf, though a rather unusual looking one. They plucked it from the ground and held it up for Meredith to see.
The leaf had an odd texture to it, making them think it might just be a decoration and not from a real plant. As they turned it in the light, it appeared to have a face. They quickly turned it away again instinctively, finding the spooky face rather confronting.
“I think we can, ah, keep it,” they explained. “Would you like to hold it?”
Meredith nodded again, reaching out for the leaf. Her small stature made it so she had to hug the leaf to her body to keep hold of it, but she was determined to enjoy her new treasure. Silver smiled, thinking it was really cute the way she clung to it.

As they stood back up, Silver could see something scurry under the door into the next room. “Did you see that?” Silver asked.
“See?” Meredith asked, peeking over the leaf to have a look. No, she hadn’t seen anything.
“It was a monster, Meri!” they said enthusiastically.
“Monster!” Rather than being afraid, she was clearly curious and excited instead.
“Let’s go get it,” Silver said. They were fairly confident that the ‘monster’ was some little thing, one of those tiny critters that often ran around this place, perhaps. Nothing too threatening could have fit under the door. Unless it was a trap. While that was possible, Silver didn’t want to dwell on that possibility for long. It felt like the more they thought about it, the more likely it was to be true.
The door to the next room simply swung open without a latch or handle of any kind.

Silver thought that was a little odd, but it was yet another thing they reminded themselves not to worry about. It’s just a door, they said in their head. Nothing to be too concerned with.
This room was yet another plain looking room with a large table in the center. There was hardly room to walk around the table as it was much bigger than the previous one. This one was not empty, though. It was completely full of suspicious looking food. Each place setting presented a huge slab of uncooked meat, and food like eggs had the shells included.
Meredith wrinkled up her face looking at the gross food on the table. It didn't look like anything she wanted to eat. Not even close. She continued to cling to her leaf, peering over it for some other thing of note.
"There, there," she pointed again, this time at a door on the opposite side of the room from where they were.

There's a mouse behind that door! A lot less spooky than the other creatures you had found!

Kuii’s perfectly white fur disappeared into the fresh blanket of snow. Were it not for his wings and horn, he would be impossible to spot against the snow. Silver watched as he bounced from one snow pile to another. As far as they knew, he had never seen this much of the stuff. He was still figuring out how to walk in it, frequently shaking his paws as they lifted off the cold ground. Not many places had this much snow, even in the depths of winter. They always thought it was strange that the mansion had such a significant command over the weather within its gate. Regardless of what happened outside the fence, the weather within the mansion grounds followed its own rules. Often, this meant one extreme or another, from blankets of perpetually fresh snow during the broken time to mountains of sand during meredian. It took a while, but they were starting to get used to the ebb and flow of seasonal magic. 1[155.2, 10.2]

No matter how many times they were there, they could never predict what might happen next. For that reason, they often let their creatures take the lead. Curious creatures could explore to their heart’s content, and they were spared the burden of deciding what to do next. It was a pretty nice deal, really.
Kuii hopped in an awkward zig-zagging pattern, walking for a while until the snow irritated the fur on his chest, then jumping up and shaking it off before landing and doing it all again. Snow was very troublesome, he quickly concluded. He kept trying to find another place where the snow would be thinner, but then he would take a step into a deeper patch without warning. It was just impossible to tell what was going to happen.
His pale eyes squinted at the harsh sunlight glaring off the too-white world around him. He had to think about this strategically.

Without warning, he flapped his wings, allowing the misty magic to carry him into the air. He shook all of his paws in unison, shedding clumps of snow that were clinging to his fur. There, that was much better. Why hadn’t he thought of this ten minutes ago? At first, he liked the sensation of the snow between his claws, but he quickly tired of it.
Silver smirked at Kuii, for they knew exactly how he felt. Snow was beautiful and interesting and even kind of fun… for a little while. The first snowy day of winter was lovely, but the 30th was nothing short of dreadful. They had boots and other warm gear to protect them, but all Kuii had was his fur. They kept a close eye on his health, of course, but they knew that bare paws against the snow was not terribly pleasant. Like all things in life, this was something he’d need to figure out for himself without Silver intervening too much.

“What’s your plan?” Silver asked.
Kuii’s eyes locked onto a patch of trees nearby. The pine trees, since they didn’t lose their leaves like other kinds of trees, protected the ground from snow. He took off in that direction, leaving Silver scrambling to catch up with him. Since they were stuck trudging through the snow the old fashioned way, it took them a lot longer to get there. Thankfully, Kuii was peacefully waiting for them, laying under a tree with his paws crossed over one another.
As soon as Silver stepped into the shade provided by the trees, they could feel their eyes quickly adjusting. Until that happened, they didn’t notice how bright it was with the sun glaring off the white snow. It was always easy to forget about the sun when it was so cold. Even though it was colder with little sunlight getting through, it felt much more serene.

“Good choice,” Silver said. They watched their frozen breath hang in the air. Like they needed another reminder that it was, in fact, very cold.
Silver looked up into the trees above them, marveling at how the thousands of little needles combined to make something that seemed almost solid. It protected the ground from seeing the snow and the air from seeing wind or light. A peaceful little bubble of its own.
Kuii stood up and shook his tails, then he stretched out his body as long as it could go. He yawned widely, showing a mouth full of teeth, then looked up at Silver as if none of that had ever happened. All he wanted was to get his feet dry. He didn’t really care what happened now.
“How about we look around in here?” Silver shrugged, then walked past Kuii deeper into the patch of trees. They breathed in slowly through their nose, taking in the scent of the pine.
