There were many pathways that wound around the city that Silver felt were familiar, yet they didn't know where they went. Now and then they would wander down one, just to see where it led. As they were still getting back on their feet after everything that had happened, they had a lot of spare time to do things like this. Nina would surely watch over the creatures for another day if they got truly lost. This path felt different to the others, for some reason. Instead of feeling interesting or even frightening, it felt safe and comforting. It was similar to the way it felt on the path to the garden or the river below. Somewhere they had gone many times, and at the end there was sure to be a good outcome. They daydreamed about where it might lead on the way there, only to realize that they were wandering strangely close to residential streets. Though Silver could easily remember where their kennel was, they had trouble with the streets of the city.
One home in particular felt most familiar. They must know someone who lives there. Did they live there? They couldn't be sure. Surely, if they had a second home, it would be long abandoned by now. The city would have taken it back, or even condemned it. This place didn't look like it was unoccupied, however. Silver was afraid to simply walk up and knock on the door, so instead they decided to check it out, unaware of how weird it was to wander around a stranger's yard. It wouldn't be the first time they had done something peculiar since they got back. They were sure it would probably be fine.
Zii was visibly uncomfortable as they went around to scope out the yard. Silver might not remember what was going on, but she did. She tried floating in his face and swishing her tail, and even using her telekinesis to pull on Silver's hair, but none of it worked. They were too zoned out to pay attention to her warnings. She hovered close to their shoulder and stayed on high alert, just in case she could potentially do something to help.

The gates were imposing, and the fence surrounding the property was solid. Too high for an Equillion to jump, but easy enough to climb if you were a good climber. Just inside would be a large yard, leading up to a cottage-style house. Fences stretched behind the house, with a barn, a river, a forest, and a much larger building a ways back. While most creatures were contained in enclosures, there were some free roamers, most of which would remain hidden unless there was a threat of some sort. Perched on the main pillars of the gate were two gargoyles; one a shimmery pink and one onyx black. They would stare at visitors and intruders alike, with cold empty gazes, unmoving unless provoked.
In the sky, there seemed to be something moving, soaring amongst the clouds. It looked tiny from the distance, a speck with lines jutting out like wings. It banked and spiraled lower, ducking in and out of sight in the misty cover up high. There were unspeakably familiar things all over, yet everything was different. The property had been leveled once, and then since tripled in size if not more. If the visitor happened to look, they might see familiar faces in the Equillion grazing in the pasture, or in the Akui Malii lounging on the doorstep. Perhaps in the two Mortlings scampering around, playing tag.
The air was silent and still, save for the sounds of bugs and basic birds, and rushing water heard even at the front gate.

The more time they spent wandering around outside the gate, the more agitated Zii became. She flew around Silver in increasingly tight circles, desperate to make them notice something that would make them change their mind. She made fierce eye contact with the Gargoyles at the gate, hoping to intimidate them into staying away. As usual, Zii was unsuccessful, and Silver was determined to find out where that weird feeling was coming from. They just couldn't ignore it, no matter how concerned Zii was.
"Look, Zii, I think that's an Equillion over there," Silver said softly. They liked Equillion and found the sight of one encouraging. As far as they were concerned, this was a good sign that meant they were supposed to follow through with their plan. The Shijin found it very alarming, as none of the creatures around here looked cute and friendly like the ones they usually kept.
Silver looked at the fence for a long while before they finally made a decision. It was generally considered not okay to climb the fence into someone's property, but against their better judgement, they ignored that rule. Just this once. There was something about this place that was really bothering them and there was no way they'd be able to find out without going over that fence. So they did. Silver wasn't terribly strong, but they were nimble and small enough not to worry about it. They were lucky that the fence wasn't enchanted with some kind of magic that would fry anyone who touched it.
Once the fence was out of the way, he walked slowly toward the Equillion in the distance. Maybe if they got close enough to one to see what it looked like, they would be able to remember them. They did seem to have a good memory for animals, after all.

The shimmery, pastel Gargoyle turned her head slowly to watch the intruder. It wasn't everyday someone braved the fence to try and climb onto the property, so the Gargoyle wasn't quite sure what to do about it. Surely the other creatures inside the place would rip the person to shreds, if they were indeed a threat. But just in case... Silver's back to her and the fence, she lifted a clawed hand and cast a quick spell; a feeling of bliss and contentment would settle over the intruder, making them ill-inclined to attack anything inside. It wasn't much, and it wouldn't keep them from continuing their mission, but casting Bliss would ensure they didn't cause damage to the property or the creatures themselves. The black gargoyle without wings simply watched on.
The Equillion in the pasture was all dark and all bright, at the same time. Thin, black body. Wispy flame-like mane dancing in the breeze, seeming to crackle yellow, orange, red in succession. But when he turned; the Equillion had a horn and a dainty face. Vlad was the closest to the fence, the first to notice, when the newcomer approached. His head raised. Not in the quick fashion of fright, but in the slow, deliberate 'I'm watching you' stance of confidence.

Everything about this place seemed weird and possibly magical, so even if they had noticed the Gargoyle casting the spell, they would pay it no attention. Silver felt a wave of pleasantness and contentment wash over them. That was all the more reason to continue with what they were doing. Following their weird impulse to go inside had filled them with a sense of peace, which to them meant that they were clearly doing the right thing. If only they knew that the feeling was artificial, they might quickly change their mind.
Silver made eye contact with the first Equillion they could see. At a glance it seemed like it could be a Tainted, but its body was the wrong shape for that, and they quickly realized that its mane was not actually fire but merely resembled it. It looked somewhat familiar and that caused them to smile. It didn't belong to them, at least they didn't think so, but it reminded them of others they had met before. Silver showed no fear as they slowly and gently approached the strange beast. Their stance was non-threatening, for even if they weren't pacified by the spell, they truly meant the creature no harm. They just wanted to get a little closer as if that would answer all the questions that had been tugging at their mind since they arrived.
Zii had many things to be concerned about. The weird pastel rock was doing some kind of magic, and she had no way to stop it. The fact that Silver didn't keel over dead was, as far as she was concerned, a complete miracle. How stupid they could be!? She flicked her tail and settled back into the space just behind Silver's shoulder and waited to see what would happen. At the very least, she could probably use her healing powers to prevent them from dying if they got charged by that huge Equillion. Probably.

Vlad snorted, still eyeing the newcomer with a degree of disgruntlement. He was being disturbed, and for what? What did this stranger want? Perhaps not stranger, they seemed familiar... But it had been a while and both had changed since they'd lived together with Ashe, so the metaphorical hackles were still raised. He seemed to hover just above the grass, such was his grace as he moved, sweeping to the side and turning to face Silver. He snorted again, and this time sparks of flame sizzled from the muzzle. Misty mane and tail rolled and floated around him, like flaming stormclouds, crackling with the aggression of the Equillion. Pure though he might be, he had his father's temper - perhaps worse, because he had no ribbon with which to grow human like bonds through shared thoughts.
Poised, the stallion lowered his head, aiming his horn in a threatening manner, ready to strike if the person came any closer. It wasn't that he felt threatened, but that he enjoyed threatening others, getting his way whenever he felt like it. He only listened to a handful of living creatures, one of them being his father, another Ashe, and then...
There was a swoop, swoop sound of leathery wings as another creature joined them. This stallion was huge, built like a tainted- that is to say, muscular but slim, too brawny for the Pure body, not thick enough for the Common. Bones showed; ribs, femurs and humorus. Black flame crackled across his body and large bat wings folded at his side. Vlad whipped around to face him, paused for a moment as he debated challenging him, then he bowed his head, and horn, to Maverick.
The black stallion had a pair of eerie robotic eyes jammed into the otherwise empty sockets; these stared at Vlad until the Pure retreated, flicking his tail as he trotted away, then they turned and fixed on Silver and his companion. If this wasn't a familiar face, perhaps none were, and though Maverick had been around Silv, Maverick hadn't had eyes of his own back then.
"You smell familiar..." Came the deep, rumbling voice. Who spoke? No one here besides the Equillion and the boy! The quick observer would notice the collar of speech as well as the charm of brilliance, but it would be easy to miss if you weren't looking. "You look familiar, too." From mind-images years ago, Maverick had picked up a few sights, but minds' eye was a different perspective for sure. "Who are you?"

Zii did not like the look of this at all. She placed herself slightly in front of Silver so that she stood between them and Vlad, as if her tiny ghostly self could do anything to stop him even if she tried. They appreciated the effort, really they did, but they didn't think they were in any immediate danger. This wasn't the first time they'd almost been run through with a Pure's horn. They put their hands up and made a soft sound, a 'I'm not going to hurt you, buddy' sort of sound, but they didn't approach any further. They weren't afraid so much as they really didn't want to start a fight with a creature they didn't know that well.
It was Zii who first turned to see the new intruder. She locked her eyes on the flapping of leathery wings and tried to figure out what she was looking at. Silver might not remember, but she did! This was Maverick. It started to make sense to her, but she had no way of explaining it. Instead, she just nodded her head knowingly at him as if to say 'It's good to see you' or something like that. She became considerably less tense with him around. As scary as he was, she knew that neither he nor his person had any intent to harm them. At least she thought they didn't. It had been a long time, after all.
Any normal person would be right to be terrified, but Silver strangely wasn't. Everything about the terrifying creature from its leathery wings to its thin skin stretched over bones felt familiar, and not just because they closely resembled Nyx. Were they related, perhaps? No time to figure that out now.
The feeling of wistful nostalgia was almost too much to bear. Was this what they had come here looking for? They felt overwhelmed with emotions that they didn't understand. This was really important, and they were frustrated by the fact that they couldn't remember any of it!
"You, too," Silver finally said. Whether it was that Maverick smelled or looked familiar was up to him to guess. "My name is Silver..."
"I think I love you."

"Silver. You were close with Ashe, once." Maverick remembered him, remembered the smell, remembered Ashe and Silv living close together for a long time. Going from being inseparable to the point they smelled similar, to not being around for a very long time. And now here he was, trespassing and for some reason unafraid of being gored to death by an aggressive Equillion. Maverick, too, had a horn- a long, boney growth coming from the center of his forehead, though he was much more careful with it and tended to keep it pointed upward, which changed his posture to something more regal than a typical Tainted would stand. He gazed at the newcomers; the person, with their little fox spirit. He recognized Zii for what she was, because Ashe had three Shijin of his own, little animal spirits that floated around and tried to help out. She seemed familiar with him, though he didn't recognize her, and he figured she had been present the whole time Silver had lived with Ashe.
With the newcomers sized up and memories centered, Maverick snorted at Silver's response. "Love." That was ridiculous. He was not some silly human that would go around hugging and kissing and cuddling out of love, nor was he a creature who required it to function like some others. He was sure Ashe felt a certain way about him, and he reciprocated, but pronouncements of love were the last thing he expected from an intruder.
"You were gone, for a long time. Now you are here, unexpectedly. What are you here, for?" Maverick asked, robot eyes focusing on Silver, glowing green. True, he was less aggressive than Vlad had been, but he held more capabilities than the lowly Pure, if the intent caused displeasure.

Well that was news. Ashe. Ashe. It felt familiar but just out of reach. Who was Ashe? It made sense that the creatures here might belong to a person named Ashe. That was the most logical conclusion, certainly better work than their assumption that they loved an Equillion. Now their only problem was that they had no recollection of this person or this place at all other than a vague feeling that it was important in some way. Their puzzled look slowly turned into one of concern. If they were close with this person, they would inevitably have to explain why they couldn't remember them, and that didn't sound like a conversation that was fun for anyone involved. However, maybe they knew something that Silver didn't, and it would be worth talking about even if it was uncomfortable.
Zii could feel the wave of uncertainty coming from Silver. She turned back to them and tried to send some relaxing vibes. This was a tough time for them and she wanted to do what she could to help. If she recalled correctly, Ashe was an intimidating person, and if Mavrick was here, then this was probably his home and he was probably nearby. She could only imagine how weird things were about to get.
"I was gone... for a long time," there was a pang of sadness in their voice. They did not like to be reminded of their failure, but it seemed intent on coming back up anyway. "I don't... know why I came here, I guess it just felt... familiar? You feel familiar. I want to remember, but I... can't. I don't want to hurt anyone, and I can leave if you want..."

Maverick thought it was odd, this reaction of unease. He didn't quite understand the complexity and nonsense of human emotions, aside from what he'd felt from Ashe over the years through the ribbon and their bond. Ashe's emotions had gone up and down and all around, sometimes for things that made sense and sometimes for things that Maverick couldn't comprehend, even with the gifts bestowed upon him. He couldn't frown like a human, though he continued to look intently at the pair, trying to think this over. He didn't like not knowing. Pieces of a puzzle that just didn't fit together...
He almost wished he could talk to the floating fox. She would probably know what was going on and could explain. Alas, not every creature that stepped onto this estate could talk like he could. And she wasn't one of them. Maverick was mastering powers of the mind, but even he could not speak with the mind.
"You do not remember?" He asked, ears perking forward in interest. This was a puzzle piece. He could use this. "You do not remember Ashe? You do not remember me?" He wasn't offended at the memory loss, more so checking off boxes on a list of details. What did this boy remember, what did he not remember. "I do not care if you stay or leave." As long as Ashe didn't give the order; then he would care. "I can bring you to Ashe. Perhaps he will have an answer."

Zii was acutely aware of the fact that she was the only one here that knew the whole story. Silver couldn't remember and Mavrick wasn't there. Situations like this were happening to her increasingly often lately. All she could do was hang back and watch everything unfold. Maybe she couldn't tell a story, but she could be there for Silver to comfort them. That might be even more of a help than she realized, given the circumstances.
"I.. I do not," Silver said, shaking their head. They remembered enough to get themselves here, but nothing more specific than that. It was all vague, fleeting, and emotionally charged. They were almost afraid to find out what the story was, given how strongly it made them feel. "You remind me of someone I know, her name is Nyx. Not nearly as chatty, though," Silver laughed a little at their own joke, but it was a tense laugh. Maverick didn't seem like he was ready to laugh.
'I can bring you to Ashe.' Silver let the words echo in their head. Was that what they wanted? Why they were here? They looked at Zii for a moment, but she only offered him an sympathetic nod. She desperately hoped that Ashe might know something, might be able to help, or barring any of that, might unintentionally spark a memory. On the other hand, she could only imagine how tough that might be for them if any of that did happen.
"Yes, please, if you would," they said with a nodding bow to show respect. "I think I would like to talk to Ashe."

Maverick did not laugh. "Nyx is my daughter," He said, assuming the person before him was referring to that specific Equillion. If he reminded him of her, then it was probably because of appearance. Styxx and Nyx were his children with the lovely Pure, Mercy. Though they were hardly friends, they had a respect for each other; and though they had not coupled like wild things, there was a shared bond between them, however slight, with Styxx in the herd. They had shared parenting the foal, and he had known his filly during the time Ashe and Silver lived together. He was slightly amused to hear that she was chatty. That was different from the atmosphere here with the other walking skeletons, though his 'legitimate' son, Damiel, was chatty and cheery too. He'd assumed Lux's genes had caused the humor, yet Maverick was the common factor here.
Called to action, Maverick realized he might have lied to the little human. He hadn't meant bring him to Ashe so much as he could get them together. He was quiet for a moment, though he looked preoccupied with a thought, then his robotic eyes swiveled and his features relaxed.
"Ashe is coming."
If one looked to the sky, they would notice the black speck from earlier was getting bigger, the shape forming into a large black dragon creature, four legs and two wings. The large appendages were audible as they stroked the air, and even more when they began their descent and landing. The wings buffeted the air around them, generating a large gust of wind, before the large clawed limbs touched down with a thump and the wings stopped, poised above, then rolling like parchment and tucking close to the body. On the back of the beast was a man, seated in a saddle. He slid off of Fafnir and patted the Sarane's shoulder, then turned a beaming face onto the guest. "Silver!" He gasped, hurrying over to hug his former lover.

Right, it would make sense that they were related. They could definitely see the family resemblance. Silver considered making another joke or something on that theme, but it went over so well the first time that they just decided to skip it. Maverick was clearly not in a joking mood, or actually was probably never in a joking mood. It was hard to tell with him and his creepy robotic eyes what he was thinking about. Usually Silver had a good rapport with creatures, but Maverick was hard to read. Silver wished they remembered more about him, but when didn't they feel that way?
Silver was visibly tense with their tail pinned to their leg and their ears low. They were just as easy to read as a domestic Vulticus, really. Their emotions were made incredibly clear by their body language. Zii didn't like what she had heard. Ashe would be here soon, if the words of the Equillion were to be trusted, and she did not think that they were at all ready for such a thing. Whether she liked it or not, there he was. Well, she could assume that was him with the huge black dragon. If anyone knew how to make an entrance, it was Ashe.
They weren't afraid of flaming Equillion, ghastly boney Equillion with huge horns, or even a large black Drake as it shot through the sky, but they were nonetheless afraid. They were going to have to disappoint a long time friend, and that was the worst feeling they could imagine. They drew strength from their bond with a distant loved one, and their bond with Zii. It was all they could do to keep on their feet and not freak out.
Stiff and rigid they stood as Ashe approached, like they were bracing for impact instead of greeting someone they cared about. It was eerily similar to the way they acted when they first met, all those years ago. While they might not remember that, Ashe just might. "Ah, hey," they said, their voice cracking a bit at the end.

Ashe had been practicing flight patterns and tricks on Fafnir's back. It was a beautiful day for this, sun shining and clear and the air wasn't too cold as it lashed at Ashe's face and clothes. They were far above the ground, where the air was more crisp and cold by default, and everything was brilliant in color and design. Ashe loved to fly; but he also loved the feeling of racing across the ground on the back of an Equillion, or surfing on a Pliathor. He wasn't really picky, but he did really enjoy flying on a Sarane! They cut through a cloud, zooming toward the ground at rapid speed, banking and spiraling, just to angle back upward and try it again. Ashe moved with the great body shifting beneath him, braced in his stirrups, hanging on to fight gravity, shifting his weight for better turns.
He was in the next downfall when he felt Maverick's voice in his head. [You have a visitor. At the house. Silver has returned.]
That was nearly enough to throw him to the side of the saddle, which nearly threw Fafnir off balance. He quickly caught himself before he caused a preemptive barrel roll, apologized to his Sarane, then leaned back in the saddle to slow their flight and redirect it. Fafnir grumbled a bit at having their flying lesson interrupted, but obeyed nonetheless. They swooped over the estate and zeroed in on Ashe's cottage home. Two loops in a spiral, then they landed.
Ashe was in mid hug, his arms around Silver already but right before they tightened in the well deserved bear hug, when he realized Silver was not only refraining from reciprocating, but he was giving off all of the warning signs of a terrified puppy Vulticus. Ashe frowned and took a step back, looking him over. It was his Silver, of course... Changed in the way of time, but he didn't see much outward change that couldn't be explained naturally. The same Shijin... "Hello, Zii," He said, greeting that one too.
"Hey..." He responded to Silver, concerned. "Are you...alright?" Suddenly, he was sure Silver was mad. He hadn't treated him the best in the past, running off with everything that had a pair of legs. And now word surely got out that he'd settled with someone, and it hadn't been Silver... But this looked like fear, more than anger or hurt at betrayal.

The huge black dragons and skeleton horses and weird magical gargoyles, all of that they had no problem with. In fact, the strange array of creatures was about the only thing that felt familiar. They had bumped into a few people that they didn't really remember since their return to the city, but this was so unfathomably different than forgetting the old plant lady's name. This was someone they were close to, very close to, from the way Zii was acting combined with the way their stomach twisted up into knots.
Sometimes, they remembered a bunch of little things all at once in a jumbled mess, and other times they were able to bring up a vague memory lacking any significant detail. This time, they got neither. Only a vague and confused feeling that they couldn't quite place. Even though they knew in their gut that they should remember, that this person was important, they couldn't bring up anything worthwhile. It was almost like they were forgetting on purpose, despite making every attempt to remember.
Of course he knew Zii. If they were friends, then he would have spent plenty of time with her too, right? Silver looked over at her as if staring at her could bring them some comfort. It didn't. Her face was sympathetic and they could feel a soothing aura coming off of her, but it didn't change how he felt. She did, however, give them the strength to finally say something.
"I'm not sure," they said, looking at the ground. "I'm... really confused," they said. They didn't want to be this vulnerable right off the bat, but they couldn't avoid it.
