Silver found their way to the breeding center with little difficulty, despite having to wrangle two excited Mussimander the whole way there. They were wiggly little things, constantly trying to get out of their paws and onto the ground so they could explore. It would have been a good idea to put them in a box, or at least get them a lead or something, but they didn’t think of that. Dealing with someone else’s creatures was such a pain!
They had borrowed these particular Mussimander from an acquaintance. It didn’t seem like a good idea to bring Cepe with them for this sort of an adventure. He was well behaved, sure, but he was also huge! He thought it might be a little bit awkward to try to pair him with a more reasonably sized member of his species.
There was some paperwork involved in securing a room in the breeding center, so Silver tried to get there early in order to fill it out. That didn’t work, of course, and they ended up slightly late despite their efforts. How awkward indeed. The receptionist didn’t really notice, however, and handed them the paperwork without even looking up at them. Relieved that they weren’t in trouble, they sat down in one of the rickety chairs to fill out the paperwork.

They were holding the paperwork in one hand and trying to juggle two excited Mussimander in the other. Silver realized that this was a set up for disaster, but they couldn’t exactly do anything about it. Mussimander were pretty small, so they tried to pin them against their side under their arm so they could use their other hand. Once they had that sorted, they realized that they didn't have a pen.
Surely the receptionist had a pen, but Silver couldn’t get up again from their precarious position on the chair. They were already pretty uncomfortable as it was. It was all they could do to keep Jingle and Flish still while they sat down. They were afraid that if they moved around too much, they might squish them and maybe injure their mushrooms or something. They slowly leaned to one side and stuffed their hand into their bag. They blindly fished around inside the bag to see if they could find anything resembling a pen.
There was a treat, a whistle, a flute, a glove maybe, and what might have been a small bug, but no pen. Hmm. Silver looked at Flish and Jingle, then back to the receptionist. They thought about wanting a pen as hard as they could, hoping someone would get the hint and help them out.

"Okay you two stay right here," Silver said. They gently set the two Mussimanders on the floor, but reached out to hold them both down, one in each hand. "I need to trust you to stay right here, okay? Just for a second. I have to get a pen to fill out the paperwork." Why were they explaining the situation to them? They didn't have a good answer for that.
Silver quickly let go of the Mussimanders and dashed over to the receptionist. "I need a pen, please," they said. They waited for one to show up any second now, but it took its sweet time. They cringed with every passing second until they finally got the pen they so desired. They bolted back to their seat to find out what had happened.
Jingle and Flish were not well trained Mussimander, nor were they incredibly loyal. They had both wandered off the second Silver removed their hands from their backs. They sighed, knowing that this was bound to have happened. What else were they to do? Silver put the forms and the pen down on the chair to save their place and reluctantly started Mussimander wrangling. How the heck did other people do this? Oh they probably had leashes, huh.

"Come here Jingle," Silver said in a cooing voice. It was an instinct by now to put that voice on whenever they were trying to convince a creature to do something for them, which was surprisingly often, actually. "Come on, you can do it Jingle. I have treats. Do you want treats? You just have to come back over here, okay?"
Silver hoped that the receptionist or any of the other staff for that matter didn't get angry with them and kick them out before they even got to fill out the forms to apply for a room. How often did this sort of thing happen in here? They supposed that not that many people likely brought in unleashed and untrained Mussimanders that they borrowed from a friend. Silver wasn't even entirely sure they were calling the right one by the right name.
"Looks like I'll have to give this treat to Flish over here," Silver explained. They pulled a treat out of their pocket (thank goodness they had remembered to shove some in there for such an occasion) and waved it around in the direction of the Glowing Mussimander. "If only I knew where he was, I could give him this lovely treat."

The joke was, of course that they could easily see the Mussimander hiding under the chairs. As the name would suggest, he glowed. He was pretty intent on not being found until he caught the scent of the treat. It was absolutely irresistible!
Flish carefully crept it from his hiding place and went to get the treats from Silver. They hated doing it, but the used one hand to wave the treats around and one to snap him up. Flish was too startled to properly react. He was pleased that Silver decided to give him the treat even though he had been caught and trapped.
"Now, where did Jingle go?" Silver asked. That question they actually didn't know the answer to. They had lost track of get while they were busy with Flish. She was wandering down a hallway, totally oblivious to the fact that it was off limits to visitors. Silver watched the end of her white tail go around a corner.
"No don't do that," Silver said in a way that sounded like they were deflating. They really didn't want to break the rules and go in there. They could get banned! Nonetheless they had to get her somehow do they bravely snuck across the room to catch up with her.

Why was it always like this? Despite how it might seem, Silver was not a bad pet owner. They were just not a very good at being a pet owner around other people. They were perfectly fine on their own, when they didn't have forms to fill out and forbidden rooms for their creatures to wander into.
"C'mere Jingle," Silver said in a soft whisper. "Please, I got a treat. You can't go back there, I'm sure that someone will be very angry if they found out." They had a habit of talking to themselves more and more when they were worried, and they were getting increasingly worried by the second. The only thing they hated more than worrying about upsetting people was worrying about a pet getting hurt, and this had the potential to be both.
Flish wiggled around in their arms like he wanted to jump down and explore, too. Silver held him tightly so that he couldn't get away. That was the last thing they needed at this point, two Mussimanders wandering the halls of the breeding center. "Here, silly, have another treat and settle down," they said, hastily pushing a treat on Flish so that he would hopefully be too distracted to wiggle himself free.

Silver was trying to think positively about their situation. They had picked two incredibly easy to find Mussimander, that was a bonus! They wanted to laugh at their own misfortune, but they resisted. They were worried that if they made a sound, they'd surely be found out and kicked out of this place. Plus, they could see Jingle and they were so close to getting her back and getting out of here.
"Aha," Silver said as they pounced. They were very careful to hold Flish in such a way that he didn't get squished. Since Mussimander were pretty small (and pretty dumb), it was actually pretty easy to catch her, finally. Silver breathed a sigh of relief and gave her the treat. They didn't like to reward that kind of behavior, but they wanted her to learn that coming back to them was a good thing, no matter the circumstances.
Now that they had the two little Mussimanders, one in each arm, they were ready to run back to the reception room and finish the dang paperwork. They did remember that pen, right? They hoped they'd be able to find it once they got back there. They ran as quickly as they could without drawing too much attention.

Silver slid into reception and quickly plonked down into a seat. They looked around the room and nobody seemed to notice that they were even gone. For a moment, Silver wondered what it must be like to work there with people like them coming and going all the time. It sounded painfully boring to them. They never did like paperwork. Hence why they were stalling in finishing the little they had to do in order to get a room.
Silver squished the two Mussimander together and held them in place with a combination of pressing them gently against a chair and holding them under their elbow. It was hard to keep them from moving around without also damaging their delicate mushrooms. Why couldn't' all Mussimander be as big and calm as Cepe? They used the one free paw to scribble down the rest of the details they needed for the application.
Now they just needed to put the paperwork on the counter and go to their room without dropping any papers or Mussimander on the way. They hastily stuffed the edge of the paper into their mouth and grabbed Flish in one hand, and Jingle in the other. "Ah, here you go, thanks," they said as they awkwardly tucked Flish under their armpit so they could put the paperwork on the counter.

They dropped their paperwork down and continued to settled Flish and Jingle into place under their arms. Now they just had to get to the room, and everything would be smooth sailing from there. They hurried out of reception just to make sure that nobody would stop them. They hadn't done anything wrong, they thought, but they were still a bit nervous after nearly losing both of the Mussimanders. Not to mention the fact that these two weren't even theirs in the first place!
Silver breathed a slow sigh of relief when they came upon the right room. They gently squished Flish once more and opened the door. "Sorry there," they said sincerely. "This will be the last time... for now." They almost forgot the part where they had to leave afterwards. Not that Flish seemed to mind that much.
"Voila!" they said. They squatted down and set Flish and Jingle onto the floor. As the two little lizard creatures started to look around, Silver carefully inspected them. They had to make sure that they hadn't accidentally hurt the little creatures. They would feel pretty bad if they had, but they both seemed perfectly fine. Maybe they were tougher than they looked after all. Silver finally felt like they could relax a little.

"There's usually... toys or something, in these rooms," Silver wondered aloud. They took a quick look around the room and noticed a large plastic box in the corner. That must be where the toys and things were, they thought.
They reached blindly into the box and grabbed the first thing their paw touched. It was a small stuffed toy of some kind. Did Mussimander play with soft toys like this? They weren't sure, so they tossed it on the ground to look for another one. There was a jingly ball, a blanket, another soft toy... "Oh, I think these are Orbaru toys," Silver said.
"Ah well," they shook the jingly ball. "This could be fun, right? Will you guys chase it?" Silver rolled the ball across the floor, but it just bumped into Jingle's leg and stopped abruptly. She didn't really seem to notice. "Hah, that's pretty funny," they said. "Jingly ball for Jingle! Is that how you got your name, little one?"
"Hold on," they said, as if the Mussimander had any choice in the matter. "Where's Flish? Fliiish?" They were instantly filled with dread thinking that they had lost him a second time. It hadn't even been 10 minutes yet! They took a deep breath, stood up, and tried not to freak out.
