Ashe loved doing quests. He wasn't sure why, though sometimes it was obvious that the loot was the reason he did it, and maybe the renown, but it also gave him something to do during his day... As if he didn't already have enough to do, you know? But he was sure it was one of those reasons, or a combination if nothing else, and here he was yet again checking for new quests. He found that people liked to post their quests at the start of the month, unless it was something urgent. This month was no exception, and he quickly located one that looked fun, and easy, to do. Planting! This would be relaxing compared to his usual activities, and he knew just the pet. When he got back to the Estate, and located the Twins, he had a new hassle on his hands; separating them. He tricked them by tossing Xaphan a chunk of meat, and while she was eating and Zagan was angry over it, he grabbed the little blue Son and scurried out the gate. Zagan was actually fine once he got him away from his sister. He squirmed and wriggled in Ashe's hands, and the man quickly clipped the collar and leash onto the little guy before setting him down. The collar wasn't fitted properly, as Ashe used it for so many critters, but Zagan's blocky head would keep it around the skinnier neck no problem. He pulled and tugged and choked himself, but Ashe just continued. He'd figure it out eventually. He wandered back to collect a box of saplings for himself, then proceeded to the park. This would be the best place to start, he thought, in planting some trees. Then maybe he could go up and down the streets asking people if they wanted trees by their homes.
He found a place on the edge of the wooded part of the park and knelt down. He had a hand shovel for himself, but his real plan was to have something else dig for him... He glanced over at Zagan.

"Dig, Zagan!" Ashe said. A ring on his right hand glowed a soft green, indicating his speech being changed to make sense to the Mortling. He'd been trained to dig already, and he heard the command and got to work, no translation needed. Zagan went to where Ashe was pointing and started to claw at the soft ground, instantly tearing up clumps of grass and a few careless leaves. He got to the soil and really let it fly - clumps and clods flew into the air behind him, at about Ashe's thigh height. Some hit the man before he had the sense to back up out of the way. He continued around the Mortling and moved sideways to where he wanted the next hole dug, and he made a tiny hole with a little shovel.
"Zagan, over here. Dig here." Ashe gestured at the new mark on the ground, and the Mortling scurried over, with one last kick of the hind legs to fling more earth.

Zagan obediently dug where Ashe pointed out for him. Asking a mischievous child of a critter to do something naughty like digging, of course that would be the one thing he jumped at with full attention and full force. He kicked up the dirt and quickly had another hole dug before Ashe could get the next one started. He made a gesture, and asked Zagan to dig there too, and the little guy obliged eagerly. Pretty soon, in this fashion, Ashe had ten evenly spaced - for the most part - holes dug several inches deep. Ashe stopped him with a few words, which translated into Mortling-speak, and the Son relaxed. He'd been getting worked up from the excitement of doing something he liked, and the actual effort it took to dig rapidly and break through the tougher top layer of soil, which was still partially frozen. He was breathing a little harder than usual though not by much, and looking eagerly for the next thing to do.

Ashe let Zagan wander around. He could hear soft murmurings from the Son Mortling, things like "Dig, dig dig," and "I love digging!" and other such happy little things. Ashe smiled to himself as he started placing saplings in the holes, holding them up while he pushed dirt up and around them, burying the roots and helping give the tree some support, enough to stand upright. He moved to the second and the third, doing the same thing with each one, pressing the soil down flat and patting it so it would be left rather firm and supportive. When he was done, he sat back and observed his work, looking at how straight the line was that he was creating. Satisfied, he got up and called his critter back again. Zagan came scurrying over, and Ashe started the next row. He pointed to a spot and watched as his child got down to business, digging another hole there, a few swipes of those paws leaving a dent in the earth.

For as much fun as Zagan was having, digging these holes for Ashe to put the plant saplings in, Ashe was only trailing behind in his joy a little bit. He liked the fresh air, getting out and doing something with a pet of his he hadn't spent too much time with lately, and also getting his own hands a bit dirty. It felt good, and refreshing, and he nearly forgot he was on a quest. He supposed the quest part of this was just to motivate people to do things they possibly should be doing already. It was good for the planet, wasn't it, to plant more trees as people cut them down to make room for their homes, or also to build said homes. A lot of people liked the log cabin look, for example. Zagan was zipping around, digging where Ashe pointed and commanded, and scurrying off on his own when not called. This was when Ashe himself was planting the saplings.

It honestly didn't take Ashe long to make his own little forest of saplings. They barely even came up to his knees, the little baby trees. They were cute and reminded him of Nyssa. They had been little baby trees at one point, too, but they moved around, which had been a little unnerving in a sense. This was more relaxing and gave a feeling of accomplishment. He surveyed his work, and walked through, checking the little saplings. Did he need to water these guys? He wasn't sure. Would nature take care of them? He supposed he should give them any jumpstart he could. He called to Zagan, and the pair left to go get a watering can of some sort. He could always fill it at the stream flowing through the park, too. It didn't take long to get, and the two returned, with Zagan zipping around back and forth in front of Ashe's legs. He'd been restricted to the collar and leash!

Ashe hadn't gone very far earlier when they made their short trek back to get the watering can, before he realized Zagan was still off the leash and that was a bad idea. He'd quickly caught up his little mortling, snapped the leash on, and proceeded. Now they were back where they had started, with a full watering can. Ashe spent a few minutes giving each sapling in his section a drink of water. "You get a drink..." He murmured. "And you get a drink..." He continued. "You all get a drink!" He quickly dampened the earth around each baby tree and set the nearly empty can aside.
"This section looks pretty good, Zag, let's try over here." He called to his Mortling and the Son came trotting over to him.
More dig? Yes dig, love to dig! he was saying as he hurried over to follow Ashe to the new section of ground. It looked flat and perfect for digging! But he was waiting for the cue.

They got to work over here, too. "Zag, dig here." Ashe pointed at a spot, and Zagan quickly dug a hole for him where he pointed. Ashe gestured to the next spot, and the next. They got into a steady rhythm, with the Mortling digging along and Ashe following behind him, planting the saplings and covering up the roots and a couple inches of what would be the future trunk but was now barely a twig. When they had planted two rows, Ashe briefly paused to go get the watering can and dampen the earth around each sapling. He ran out of water quickly this time, and had to go refill it. He called to Zagan and the Mortling came to him. Ashe always wondered how much of Zagan's obedience was because he genuinely cared about him, the human, and how much of it was because he was shocked into obedience simply because Ashe was speaking in a language he understood.

He supposed he would never know for sure, unless he asked and Zag actually understood what was being asked. Which would be a task in and of itself. So Ashe just enjoyed the Mortling following along with him as he went and refilled the can at the stream, then made his way back to the mini forest. He finished watering the few that hadn't seen a drop yet, then selected the next spot to dig and gestured for Zagan to dig right there. Eagerly, the little Mortling dug up a nice little hole for him, dirt still flying. Ashe was wondering if he was starting to get tired at all yet - they had dug quite a few holes! Ashe knew if he had had to dig by himself with a shovel or something, he would be getting tired by now. But he felt like he could go on forever, when his toughest task was to go back and forth to and from the stream for water. He focused on the task at hand... Until he realized the amount of saplings he had was numbered.
