Unpleasant dreams came to Nadia in waves. Night after night, she would be left panting and sweaty, forced upright in her bed by the night terrors that plagued her. Perhaps she would find respite from them for a few weeks. Perhaps they would not leave for months. Sleep was an unpredictable entity, a shadow that kept eluding her.
Yet, this one came. So vivid, but not with fear; a certain calmness had washed over her as she walked, thoughtless, to her unknown destination. It was a relief. Puzzlement was to come, but she welcomed the change, for it meant no demons crept through her thoughts tonight. Only this unfamiliar creature, this tat-lung, who wished to speak what sounded like riddles to her in her addled state.
"A dream within a dream..." Her voice was low and wistful. "The dreamer... can you feel them?"
She felt that she could, with sudden clarity. Images swirled through her head, a confusing blur that became obvious in the blink of an eye. Like she had known them her whole life, but simply forgotten.
"I see... a being like you," She spoke. When she looked down at her hand, she saw the glimmer of metal - uncurling her fingers revealed a coin that she didn't recognise. "But it is... not you. It is a wise being, I feel... it roams the woodland. I cannot tell if it is kindly... but it is honest. Graceful, tall... it walks in blossoms."
Her head ached. Was that possible, in this sphere? Nadia touched her fingertips to her temples and drew in a grounding breath.
"I believe it is... brown, but... with paler colours, somehow, somewhere. Almost like... decorations. I cannot tell. It is becoming harder to make it out..."
She couldn't speak any more. Consumed as she was, by the dreamer, the place, the tat-lung's laugh, she dropped the coin to the floor, and it clattered on the stone.
