Nerius was once again at the breeding center. The lotine breeding he'd been here for last had gone better than expected, having never worked with the species, or that particular lotine, before. But this time he was back to pachee, he had to admit he had a fondness for the cute little plant critters, and recently he'd heard of a contest being hosted about them. Or more specifically, their babies, and he'd borrowed the female for the contest. The male was his own, an unusually colored one from the Contest Hall, and he was hopeful the two would make pretty (and "flowery") offspring.
Both were in crates, and he could hear rustling, but they'd have to wait a little longer while Nerius filled out paperwork. It seemed busier than usual, possibly due to the contest, or maybe the onset of spring put people in the mood for breeding. Err, not like that! Spring! As in new life, as in babies! Thankfully Nerius hadn't said any of that out loud, and managed to avoid embarrassment while he finished filling out the forms. He had to wait a little before the person at the front desk was done with another visitor, but soon enough he was given a keycard, and directed to a room.

Said room was much the same as the other pachee rooms he'd used, lots of plants, and plenty of toys. Gently he set the two carriers on the ground, and opened the doors, letting the pachee exit on their own. Sigal was the first to exit, probably because he was used to Nerius, and less wary of him, and immediately started grooming his leaves. They hadn't really gotten messed up in the carrier, but he had a tendency to preen, and Nerius hoped he wouldn't be too distracted by himself to take an interest in the female. The female took a little longer to exit her carrier, but when she did, she shot right out, zooming across the room.
Nerius hadn't known what to expect with her personality, he'd already found the little critters had a wide variety of attitudes. If he'd brought a more skittish male, that might have been an issue, but It Came From Space's (or "Spacey", as the note mentioned) wild dash across the room didn't do more than mildly startle him. Sigal looked up for a moment, then went right back to grooming his leaves. Nerius couldn't tell if that was a lack of interest, or him making sure he looked nice for the lady.

Spacey hadn't taken an interest in him so far, and was continuing to scamper around the room, exploring every little spot she could find, though not very thoroughly. And with her wings, that also included some of the 'higher' areas, though that was a relative term, Nerius was still taller than any of the perches in the room. Which was good, as he didn't really want an energetic pachee stuck somewhere he couldn't reach.
While Nerius let the pachee do their own thing for a little bit, letting them get comfortable with their surroundings, he did need to give them the berries before things got too far along. He'd brought more than usual, one of each, but it was worth it he figured, and it seemed that people generally did use all three at once. At the very least, it couldn't hurt.
He hadn't been sure how he'd get their attentions, but as soon as he took the berries out, Sigal perked up, and headed over to Nerius. He wasn't running all over the room, so it wasn't surprising he noticed the snacks first. Nerius gave him the masculinity berry, it was the smallest of the lot, and he looked rather disappointment, but still absorbed it with his roots. Spacey did notice the other pachee was being given food, and scurried over to Nerius, looking at the berries with interest.

Not wasting any time, he gave her the abundance berry, not wanting to risk the energetic pachee taking the other away from Sigal. Those berries had to be given to a specific gender, and he didn't want them getting mixed up. The femininity berry, oddly enough, could be used with either, and with how tiny the first berry was, Nerius gave the cluster of pink berries to Sigal. He'd already finished the small red berry, and had been making the puppy eyes. Was giving him the berry cluster encouraging that? Maybe, but it really wouldn't have been fair to give all the rest of the berries to Spacey. He could have split them up, Nerius supposed, it was a cluster of berries, rather than a single fruit. Once the pachee had been given their snacks, Nerius walked over to the couch, and took a seat. He was still keeping an eye on them, but didn't want to be an extra wheel. Or get coated in pollen, that could happen too if they were impatient, and getting it out of his cloths would be a pain. He was just glad he wasn't allergic to their pollen, that would have made this whole process miserable.

Spacey was the first to finish her berry, and was eyeing the few remaining pink ones held by Sigal. It would be fine if she 'ate' them, but it probably wouldn't endear her to the male if she took his berries. And she might have tried, if she'd had enough time, but it didn't take Sigal long to finish the last of the berries, after which he was careful to remove any berry remains from his paws. Then, and only then, did he finally pay attention to the female that had been staring at him (well, at his snack).
Nerius wasn't really surprised, Sigal was his own pachee, not a borrowed one, and he already knew a bit about the critter's personality. He tended to focus on himself, but he also liked to show off, and Nerius was hoping that last bit would come into play here. But while he waited, Nerius flipped through the magazines that where everywhere in the breeding center. Twenty credits said most of them were on houluh. It was a shame no one was around to take that bet, because most of them were, but there was also a magizine with a variety of creatures (most of which he'd not seen before) on the cover, that caught his eye.

He really ought to pay more attention to the Labs species, Nerius supposed. The only ones he recognized were the plant creatures, the mussimander and the dragonoak, even though he didn't actually own either species. Still, he picked it up, and flipped through the pages. There was quite a lot on the newly breedable creatures, though a few other critters were in there as well. (It seemed there'd been a houluh salonne show recently.) According to what he was reading, for these 'wild creatures' (did that meant they weren't made by the Labs, or was that just a gimmicky title?) to breed, they needed... a root? It sounded odd, but no stranger than the effect berries had on pachee, really.
Sigal had realized he was being stared at by Spacey, and was perfectly okay with this. He always liked attention, and especially enjoyed it from such a pretty female. He'd never seen wings like that, sure one of the other males Nerius kept had webbed wings, but they weren't pretty like these. These were like brightly colored petals, dramatically colored against her darker coat. And he'd already caught her attention too (spoiler alert, it had actually been the berries, not his good looks, but that hadn't occurred to him.)

He may not have had such fabulous wings, but he did have some very nice leaves, that faded from a rich green, to stormy blue. Much nicer than the dried looking yellowy leaves regular pachee had. Sigal flared out his leaves, and rustled them, hoping to catch Spacey's interest. Not hard to do, as she'd already been watching, but now it was for him, rather than food. She scampered forward a little bit, but still wasn't super interested yet.
Nerius looked up at the sound of rustling, that was a good sign with pachee, and sure enough Sigal was doing his showoff thing. That was a good sign, and he wasn't going to intervene, instead glancing back down to the magazine. The roots, it sounded like, were rather expensive, and though these critters were now able to breed, it wasn't like pachee or lotine, or even houluh, which could reproduce rapidly. Still, he wasn't uninterested in it, particularly the dragonoaks. They already came in an assortment of interesting colors and patterns, they'd likely result in some pretty mixes. Though the fact that he didn't have one was bit of a snag, he hadn't gone shopping for more plant creatures, and there hadn't been one with the garden he'd acquired.

He'd finally given up on that garden too, not only was it an absolute mess, it also wasn't located anywhere near where he lived. The public garden plots might have been great for people living in their kennel, or a small apartment, who didn't have space for their own garden, but Nerius had realized most people with more property kept gardens on their own grounds. That was much preferable to having to head all the way out to the community gardens, and he'd taken advantage of the spring weather to have some work done on his own grounds. Then would be the oh so fun part of having to round up all the critters in the old overgrown mess, and get them moved over to the new garden.
Sigal was unaware of his impending move, and even if he hadn't been, was much more interested in the pretty lady. She seemed interested (of course), so he continued his flirty rustling, wiggling his tail along with it. Spacey moved a little closer, his charm seemed to be working, and more importantly fluttered her own wings. It was much more quiet than leaves, but was much more visibly dramatic, with the larger size and bright color.

For all his attempts at flirting, Sigal was the one more enamored, fascinated by those shimmery, golden wings. He continued with his attempts, trying to further flare his leaves, and make them look larger. He didn't neglect tail movements either, and continued wiggling it, as if to use it to make up for his lack of wing area. And it was actually working! Pachee tended not to be terribly picky when it came to pollinating, unlike many of the other species that needed more time to warm up to each other. There were likely exceptions, but this wasn't one of them, and Spacey approached him fully, giving a curious sniff, as if inspecting his leaves.
Nerius glanced up to check on the pachee again, not because he suspected anything to be wrong, but because he'd finished the article he was reading. It looked to him like they were getting along well, and if it was anything like past pachee breeding, there probably wasn't much of a point in searching for something else to read. At least in depth, though he did skim through an article on kairfuryoo, interestingly enough they sometimes produced a 'throwback' offspring, something called a 'kair', though the article was oddly vague about the whole thing.

Sigal had no issues with the curiosity, quite the opposite really, and returned the curious sniff. Spacey was receptive to this, and these curious investigations soon changed to nuzzling, and not long after that was the distinctive sound of a pachee tail slapping the ground. Not to mention the pollen sent flying into the air.
Both of these things caused Nerius to look up, and set down the magazine. It had gone quicker than some pairings he'd done in the past, some had been slow to exit the carrier, or distracted by the room. These two had hopped right out, and Sigal's showy nature had gotten things moving quickly. Nerius wasn't complaining of course, it meant he could move on to other tasks, and it was much more preferable to pachee that didn't want anything to do with each other.
Still, he let the pachee have a bit more time with each other, and for the pollen to settle, before loading them back into their carriers. The wait wasn't required, really, but it seemed polite, even if he'd never even heard of pachee taking long term partners. Was that a natural trait, or a result of the way humanoids bred them? It didn't seem to bother them at least, his at least had never acted strangely or unhappy after being separated.
