More and more these days, Rei was accompanying San on his trips around the city to pick up odd jobs. There was a limit to this, of course. Anything where he had to work a proper shift at a shop or anything of the like was out of the question, simply because he had to be alert for customers to serve. But work that he could accomplish largely on his own--- courier runs, for example--- were fair game. As was, apparently, the miscellaneous request that Seveth had picked up for them from the quest board. ... Ah, Seveth. He had been very vocal about how little he cared for the job that had been foisted on him last month. It made San wonder how the man had been living before he had passed. Then again, it was entirely possible that it was this flaw that had gotten him into his current predicament to begin with.

Nevertheless, Seveth had chosen to retaliate by setting San to a task, which wasn't disagreeable to San in the least. They did need the money, after all, and he had the time. And while he was sure he would be working under supervision, he wasn't attending to people, which meant that Rei could come along if she so wished.
The parasol store, when they arrived, was a neat little thing. The shop sign was well made, with a clean font establishing it as 'Pleasant Parasols'. In the window, there were various examples of the product on display, most of them eye-catching and not terribly practical. But then, San supposed, they were parasols and not umbrellas. Even the frilliest of these could at least shield someone from the sun, even if they couldn't hold out against inclement weather.
They caught Rei's eye, and so San stood with her for a time as she looked at the parasols.

The job didn't say anything about urgency, after all, and a little window shopping could hardly do any harm. And, he was learning, people here who were familiar with Rei's kind were generally tolerant towards them, even more so than they would be towards people of San's size.
He tried not to think about how useful that could be. He had to remind himself that there was no need for it anymore. At least, he was doing his best to keep things that way. Still, the thought would not entirely leave him, and at last he tucked it away, in case the situation ever arose where they would have to rely on something like that.
"Do you want to stay here while I work?" said San. She was not, after all, a small child to be watched over, and so long as they reconvened before they headed home, he would be content.

But Rei shook her head, and followed San as he headed around back, to pick up the tools that he would be working with and to better assess the full state of the garden they would be tending. San didn't push her further; she had made her choice, and in his own way he was glad for the company. He wouldn't say it aloud, of course; he had no wish to bind her to him if she didn't want to stay. But maybe she knew, all the same. He knew that she was paying attention, because of the things she said sometimes, and they had been working together long enough that he knew many of her cues. It stood to reason that the reverse must have been true as well.
The plants around the shop front were neat enough, possibly already tended because they were the ones that faced any incoming customers.

The plants that occupied the garden behind the shop weren't quite so lucky. They weren't overgrown by any means, but the shrubs were in need of a trim, and there was a weed situation that ought to be addressed in the flowerbeds. Nothing that couldn't be accomplished in the space of an afternoon, if San was diligent about it.
The shrubs would be the most work, and so that was where he chose to start. Picking up a pair of hedge clippers, he eyed the closest shrub at hand, trying to determine a good place to cut. It wasn't grown out so much yet that he couldn't see the shape that it ought to be, and after a little planning, he began clipping away at the leaves.
Rei stood back, watching him. He wondered that she had chosen this over browsing, since he was sure it wasn't terribly interesting to look at.
