I literally didn't think of this until today.
Is there an 'automatic message' system on the back-end of the site that could be used to automatically send new accounts onsite a kindly welcome message that perhaps mentions that the Player Guide is a good place to start, and links a few of the threads there specifically (perhaps rules and basics tutorial? Or maybe the everything tutorial) to help new folks get started?
This may not even be possible, but it would be nice to whip up a little something to help new folks on their way if it does wind up being doable. c: Provided that there is a way to auto-send messages, making a single, one-sized fits all 'Welcome to our site, start here' message wouldn't be harmful.

I know that on spirits new site which also uses pro boards he had that system set up. So it should be possible with some digging. What a great idea!

Hmm, I've not heard of it being a thing, but I'll look into it.

Thanks for being willing to look into it, Jack. C:
If it is possible- I think it would give members and mods the chance to greet new folks and answer questions that may need good explanation without chunking a day's worth of reading in the chatbox. In my experience on other forums people (including myself) tend to do informational reading without stress if directed there before the excitement of meeting everyone and becoming part of the community/learning to navigate. ^.^

Okay, after six hours of research, I believe this should be what you're looking for. It's unclear if a welcome PM is an already existing function to turn on and edit. If so, then this is just a way to customize 'who' it comes from. If not, then this must be creating that feature as well as the ability to customize who it comes from. I hope this helps! You should be able to post on that official proboards plugin linked thread for help. They seem to be quite active. EDIT: This Virtual Tour plugin for new users would also be a great addition. It can automatically bring them to different areas, point out different buttons/features they'll need to be aware of (like PM, post count, etc), and be closed out and reopened if desired. Also, putting the Everything Tutorial that Ren painstakingly carved out into the top nav bar would be very useful - even to us. Literally right after “Profile”. There is a plugin to do it, if you don’t know how. ;) I can send you the link if you can seem to find it.
