The setting: A second cleared-out patch of gardening space, the dirt tamped down by foot, and by spade for a flat and sturdy-feeling space to walk upon. A few small cobblestones are implanted into the dirt to add texture, for when walking about (or to hear that wild baakir nearby clopping). Near the edge of the enclosure is a mid-sized boulder, probably something the creator of this space could not move without mechanical help or brute strength. Its tall enough with paw holds to work for sitting on, sunning upon, or to be up high as a vantage point.
A shred of parchment is attached to the boulder, written in the language of the desert.

Grendel 6/13 This wasn't what Flare intended to happen. They were all lucky to escape the grove with their heads, much more their lives. He let Shabh go rest, but wasn't sure on what to do with the puppy. She wanted very much to follow along beside the blocky head, like she might have imprinted on him as a parent? But when he turned around at his barrel, flatten his ears and growled at her, she paused, confused. Go away? For what? She wanted to cuddle too! But he blocked the barrel and sent her away with a growl and left her alone. If there was one thing they hadn't had to experience, it was sharing. the humanish watched this display, the puppy acted completely fearless. Getting a giant snake in her face, and she just pantomimed Shabh... totally unafraid? Or too young to be scared? What was she afraid of? The houlou plopped herself on the ground in front of the occupied barrel, and started to howl piteously. LET ME IN... No response from the barrel. He made sure the puppy appeared throughly distracted before finishing things up with the goat granny. Who was 'pleased' but still wasn't complete on her problem. At the expense of their lives, he wasn't keen to revisit the grove right now. Howl 1 15.20

The Warden never looked so thankful to be freed of the goat granny and followed behind the humanish as he went back to his business. Mainly... what to do with the puppy. "Thank yeu. I can only stand that old co- er, um, -ahem- an old lady so long, y'know. She's kinda clingy." the mammalian rubbed his paws together in a gratifying manner. "Crannie is not a cow." the tone the not-dragon held sounded disappointedly stern. "Goat." "Right right right. Goat. Oh, will you SHUT UP!" The mammalian turns to the fence and shouts outright at the howling puppy. "BAD DOG" Without opening the gate, Flare made a point to step over it, and pick the puppy up, who promptly stopped howling. His eyes stared right through the mammalian. "Oh, this is YOUR dog. My, oh my bad. Will it be living in your garden?" His bamboo limb taps once on the ground he stood, which was clearly OUTSIDE the garden plot. "Right, I'll be on my way then. Don't let it howl all day, you'll have some neighbor complaints." And he literally scurried away. A disappointed huff escaped Flare. He held the puppy for a few minutes before she started pawing and nibbling at his hanging hair. Once the Warden was out of sight, he gave the little female a few ear scratches. REALLY SOFT. He could hear Shabh's sigh of relief inside the barrel. Perhaps she would only howl on approach? With a small amount of jerky, cut up into smaller strips that a puppy could try and eat, (and a single one of the meat capsules in case she did very well), Flare took himself and the puppy over the fence into the tamped down portion of area he could use to train her properly. With each turn of her head, the puppy's long floppy ears swatted either her short muzzled face or his bare arms. More then once she would make a pfft phht noise of spitting out her own fur. Eating fur did not taste good. Finally, he set her down, and let the puppy explore. She needed a name, eventually. But she appeared to be interested in the area, her nose to the ground to sniff about. While she was throughly distracted, the humanish tried to reimagine how Shabh had howled in the grove. He swallowed, throat slightly dry. Tilting his face to the sky and giving a garbled, rough AWOOOO. It wasn't long, but it was LOUD. Too much A and not enough WOOOOO. The puppy however, her ears perked and she turned around, howling her tiny little awwoooo in return. Very good. He tosses her a piece of jerky, pounced upon and eaten. From behind him, he could hear sounds inside of Shabh shuffling. Probably covering his ears. Howl 3 19.20

On the contrary, the rakai actually came out of his barrel with some reluctance, shaking himself out and padding over to the area where the fence separated the plots. He'd been watching Flare mess with the way to go in and out and NOW he was tall enough to just nudge open the thingy with his nose, which he did, and joined the two. His stance almost radiated being smug on this feat. But he glanced at the humanish and his frankly lame attempt to howl. Looking to the puppy, who is finishing chewing on her reward for her baby awoo. Now, listen to a real howl. As he released the sound form his throat, staring up at the sky, the puppy dropped her treat and joined in the howl. Awooooo! {Howl} Flare added to this, and rewarded them both. The rakai took his treat and ate it while watching his alpha interact with the new puppy. She was so... squishy. Glancing at his own scales and such, the horned dragon hound had never seen another 'dog' that didn't look like him. Scales and such, a TAIL instead of that short and furry floppy thing. She wasn't cute. Not at all. Howl 4 lv 74 1.20

The puppy cottoned on to howling alongside either the blocky head or her food giver. When either would howl, she would do so as well. {Howl} and both hounds would begin to carcophanize. It was grating on the ears after a few times, and Flare could feel the ache in his own underused vocal chords. {Good howl} Keeping them quiet now would be the tough part. It convinced the puppy that howling was okay all the time though, and she wanted attention, a lot. Feed me, play with me, pet me, etc. Needy! Flare barely had enough time to find another set of bowls so Shabh didn't lose his temper (not that he'd ever seen that be a case yet) over being forced to share his water bowl. Only his actions of incorporating her into the routine would work into showing him she was indeed part of his pack. Awwooo! The puppy sat in front of the occupied barrel, a tug toy she'd found in the pile of toys set aside for Shabh at her feet. It was too big for her. {Good howl} Flare didn't treat her, but did give her head scratches. Her tail propellered happily at the attention. She howled, she got attention! She had the idea of howling along, but getting her to be quiet would be the real test. In the recess of his memory, Flare recalled something he'd seen as a boy. The traveling merchant had brought a talking exotic bird, which talked. A lot. The man had ultimately grabbed the birds beak and held it shut while shouting at the creature to be quiet in more then one language and quite rudely at that. The bird bit him after that. For children, this was delightful. For adults, they were either amused or quite offended. This... wasn't an effective idea on keeping her quiet. Holding their mouth shut and shouting at them. Something pawed at his leg while he paused in thought, the bowl of carnivore feed (crushed for easier eating of small teeth) unfilled before him. Looking down, he saw the puppy, sitting on her haunches with her tail all wags, with big hazel eyes staring into his soul. FEED ME... she seemed to radiate. Then howled for it. Awooo! Her awoo didn't last because she got distracted by the tug toy dropped beefore her by Shabh, his posture of an irritant. Take the toy, don't howl. At least that was the idea? {Good girl.} Flare finally said in relief. {Thank you shabh.} Humph. Quiet 1 5.20

Shabh sat down on his haunches to scratch one of his ears a bit. Once finished, he shook his head a bit and watched the puppy pounce enthusiastically on the toy. Sinking her baby teeth into the rope and trying (failing) to get a grip on it. He saw the size of those baby fangs in that tiny maw. They were so... SMALL! How did the alpha want such a small and squishy creature in their pack. The puppy barked suddenly, catching his attention. She had her tug in front of her, and nosed it towards him. She wanted to play! ...with him. Joy. He gave his alpha the side eyed look of not being pleased. {Quiet down} Flare gently tried to chide the pup, when she started barking again, yipping happily at the attention. Surely she had no idea what he was talkign about. Go figure. {Shhh} She escaped him when he tried to catch her. {Time to be quiet} he repeated, and tried to catch her. Clumsy two leggedness did not help him trying to catch the butter that was small puppy. She found this to be great fun, occasionally tripping on her ears in all the glory of clumsy puppyness. Great, two klutzs. Quiet 2 7.20

He was at the end of his patience level, or reaching it. And not much could get under his skin. The puppy's excessive energy exceeded what Shabh had even exhibited, but... granted, Shabh stuck to him like sticky amber sap. Or found his own thing to do. The puppy seemed to be much more desiring of attention, or was it her breed? Bounding around and barking squeakily at him, seeking to play. Fine. FINE. He stepped through the gate, and shut the two canids in the tamped down plot. Taking a seat on the other side of the closed gate, and faced away from the two. Shabh looked between the two. The little female still dancing about like some crazy creature, and seeking much attention. He had no experience with interacting with a pup younger then himself. They were all older, and somewhat well behaved. Finally he sat down and faced away from the puppy as well. He wasn't as good at ignoring the world as his alpha, must be a two leg thing. Bark bark! The puppy didn't waste time in pouncing on the big dog's backquarters, trying to get her little teeth into the skin on his tail. FWOOMPH YIPE! She backed off with a scared cry when his back-fire ignited. Not hurt, just scared. But she was briefly quiet...? Quiet 3 9.20

Don't look, don't look, don't look, don't turn around. He had to ignore her if this was to work. Flare could feel his heartrate briefly spike when he heard the high pitched cry. But it wasn't of pain. Nor was Shabh trying to bring his attention over. The fire wasn't hot, not really. It had a bit of heat, but did not burn. Adult rakai it seemed to have back-fire, but he didn't know why. Perhaps he should ask Cortana. He could hear the puppy barking at Shabh now. Trying to get his attention too. Was he trying to ignore her too? He didn't know how much time passed before she finally let the bark shrink to a whine, scratching puppy claws on a hard surface, and finally a 'fwumph' and a humph noise. Sulking, maybe. A bit more time passes, and he finally glances backwards. Unhappy and bored, the puppy was laying down beside a back-facing rakai. Finally, she was quiet. He fishes for a treat out his pouch, and tosses it towards her. Her nose picked it up, and she finds it, eats it, but looks back to the big creature. He is paying attention! She bounds forth, and starts to bark again... but he turns away... Again! Quiet 4 11.20

This progress was slow, he had to admit. The puppy creature wasn't stupid, just young. And young weren't exactly...smart. The amount of time between her noisemaking and his ignoring start started to gradually wane on how long she carried on. How often she started to bother Shabh instead. The amount of times she would surprise herself with his back-fire. Until she started to realize that they were ignoring her... while she was making noise. When she was quiet... then she got food, and attention. Only a few treats were given her way, but the next time she sulked for being ignored... she could hear footsteps. They were odd, mismatched. The big creature had a weird smell around them; very... dirty smelly smell. Instead, she found herself being lifted up, and cuddled against a warm body. {Time to be quiet...} she heard noises, but the warmth made her feel sleepy. With a big puppy yawn, the young houlou fell asleep on them. Finally, she was quiet. This would take some gradual time to consistently get her used to not making noise constantly. Shabh humphed, trying to twist around and make sure she hadn't been dealing too much puppy damage to his tail. No, thank goodness for hard scales and thick skin. -sigh of relief- Quiet 5 8/17 Grendel 40/48 Shabh 13.20

With the summer approaching by the slight increase in time of day and temperature outside, it might be a good idea to try transplanting one or two of his bonsai out of their teapots and into the ground. However this required a lot of digging, he recalled trying to do this with his handicap, and it... wasn't easy at all. He sat on a rock in his garden, lost in thought while mindlessly watching the garden creatures romp and chase each other. Or lounge in the area. It wasn't time yet to allow the young houlou into the garden without her getting herself into trouble she couldn't get herself out of. One episode of having to untangle a squirming and unhappy animal from thorny bushes was enough. He hadn't convinced Shabh to puppysit, and make him the little one's guardian. But he hadn't outright ignored her. Shabh enjoyed the increase of sunshine, lounging in the sun and letting his wings splay out beside him. Occasionally having to lift them off the ground and dislodge a bored houlou from chewing on them. Her teeth and jaw strength couldn't break the bone, but... they were attached, couldn't she see that?! Dig 1 15.20

Frustrated, Shabh woke up from his 'nap' and took the puppy around the middle in his jaws. She yipped and squirmed as he took her through the gate and deposited her at his alpha's feet. When his alpha paid attention to him instead of the other side of the territory, he nosed the pup forward, who tried to turn around and nip him for the 'rough treatment' and gave his alpha a look that clearly said 'FIX THIS'. He angles his head and sees the chew marks on his bone wingtips. Ah. he had an idea then. The three of them found themselves in the gated area again not too long later, Flare depositing the two canids there first and then bringing over a moderately sized bowl of dirt. Bowl to Shabh, giant pot to Flare. He poured a gracious amount of dirt in the corner. {We dig now.} He tells Shabh, who cocks his head briefly. Curious, the rakai pads over to the pile of dirt, and gives it a sniff. Smelled jsut like dirt. But he had his paw picked up briefly, and dragged through the dirt, brushing it away almost. From between his legs, the puppy poked her head through, curious on what they were doing. Dig 2 17.20

{Watch} Flare tells the rakai as he releases the scaled paw, and starts digging in the dirt himself. A few minutes pass, but he's making deliberately slow progress on his hole. The two animals watching him with waning patience. Finally he stopped digging, and patted the dirt before him. {Dig here} he motions. Shabh looks at his alpha's hole... that is PATHETIC! SUCH WEAK PAWS. He huffs, and starts to dig into the dirt. As the soil moves between his paws towards beneath him, it feels so natural. And he....liked to dig! The puppy wandered to the big one's hole, not the bitey big dog. It was small, like her. She walked right into it, and mushed her face into the dirt, sneezing with a bit of soil up her nose. Achoo! {Dig here} Flare repeated, patting the soil. He has to draw the puppy out of the hole with a piece of jerky and sets her before him, and holds her paw to start digging. Reach paw, touch dirt, press and pull back. Repeat. Reach paw, touch dirt, press and pull back. Repeat. Finally he released her paw, and gave her a treat. Praising her for digging. Shabh got a treat too. Dig 3 19.20

Finally, he had an activity the two animals could do together. The houlou picked up digging actually quite quickly, and went straight into the dirt, spraying him with soil with her enthusiasm. DIGGY DIGGY HOLE! Pfht pht. The uses of sleeves, Flare thought to himself as he brushed dirt off his face. To clean his face. Shabh diligently worked on his own hole until he reached the bottom of the loose soil and finally stopped. He looked up at his alpha and gave a soft woof. He wasn't terribly proud of his hole, but it was a hole, rather then a small pit which the puppy seemed to just be making a hole that could only fit her. She was COVERED in dirt, and thats saying something, with that longer coat. She only came out for a treat, and got praise for her hole. But she had to watch in confusion as he moved all the dirt back INTO the hole! Wait, what?! Why?! She whined, and tried to start digging again until he gave her a gentle push backwards and continued to fill in the holes. Huff. Shabh noticed his works, but instead turned around on his hole and started to dig the dirt back into his own hole. Bury the food, bury the hole. Simple stuff. Dig 4 lv 75 1.20
