Fiera had stopped briefly under a tree along the sidewalk to have some water, drinking deeply from the bottle before squirting some into a little bowl in each cage as well, letting her pachee have the opportunity to get some water as well. The summer heat was truly beating down on her this year, and even though she was just walked to the breeding center (a rather routine trip for her by this point), she had already gone through an entire water bottle and was working on her second. It was all the humanish could do to keep her pachee from withering away to nothing, considering how sensitive plant creatures were to their environment. She would have to hustle to get them there in one piece, especially if she wanted their offspring to turn out well. She was trying to get back into pachee breeding after a long dry spell (with the irony of that accidental pun not being lost on her), and so had high hopes for this breeding to turn out well, despite both of the pachee involved in it not being tested in this field so far. Still, she had her fingers crossed… so to speak. The carriers were kind of in the way right now.

Considering she was a bit out of practice however, Fiera was still a bit nervous. Her pairing today was a little plain, but she was hoping she could use it to breed in some new colors and markings into her general populatino, to create some more females that she could work with. Neither of these pachee had been bred before, but with any luck that would be a good thing, allowing her to get some fresh blood in. Still, she had her worries about their health now going in, as this hot weather couldn’t be good for them. With any luck she could get them more to drink once she got to the lobby. She was already past the quest board, which was on the way to the breeding center, so she knew she had to be getting close. She hefted the carriers up a bit more, getting a better grip on their handles. She didn’t feel much movement in there, but she supposed that her pachee wouldn’t want to be moving around much right now with this oppressive heat beating down on the three of them. Fiera certainly didn’t, that was for sure, but she could still feel the sweat dripping down the back of her neck.

Her female for today was a young lady she had named “Lost in Translation” or just “Lost” for short. She was a sweet little female… when you could get her to pay attention. The rest of the time she just seemed to be off in her own little world until you snapped her fingers near her or pet her. Fiera couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking about sometimes, looking off into the void like that. Still, it didn’t get her into trouble so it wasn’t exactly a bothersome personality trait. Just odd. As for her appearance… she was a regular female pachee. Females were still plenty rare however, so Fiera wasn’t about to complain, but she had the standard brown body and green rosettes across her back that were standard for pachee in the labs. She couldn’t even compare to some of the males she had received custom ordered for her lately, but hopefully she wouldn’t have to. Fiera was expecting more “plain looking” babies from this breeding today anyway, or perhaps “naturalistic” was the word to use. Well, Lost’s leafy green back and brown body would be perfect for that sort of look, so Fiera was pretty sure they were in the clear for that.

The other pachee she had with her was Deep Open Sea, or Sea for short. She was going to call him Deep… but then remembered that she had another pachee named that as well, and chances are it was going to get a little confusing between the two of them. She had gotten him long before her other “Deep” pachee however, from one of the first contests she had entered as a prize. He hadn’t done much but sit around in her kennels playing with the other pachee until now though. He was definitely an attractive male, which is why Fiera felt so bad about taking so long to find him a mate and get those genes out there. At least today would be the day for him. As for his personality he was… one of the less playful pachee that Fiera had met. He was polite enough to the humanish, which she appreciated, but he had a rather stern and take charge sort of attitude, acting somewhere between judge, jury, and executioner for the other pachee he lived with (which usually involved pouncing on them if they were eating too much food or playing with a toy that he considered ‘his’).

She hoped their personalities wouldn’t clash too much. She could see Lost’s tendency to zone out not meshing well with Sea’s desire for control. Still, there was only one way to find out if they would work well together, and that involved NOT passing out before she got to the breeding center. Thankfully she was finally turning onto the parking lot, marching across hot asphault that she thankfully couldn’t feel through the soles of her expensive shoes. She could see plenty of houluh in booties walking across that same parking lot however, walking awkwardly. Those little shoes were normally worn in order to keep the houluh safe from snow and road salt during the winter, though Fiera agreed that it was a good idea to put them on during the summer too so they wouldn’t burn their paw pads on the hot concrete. She was amazed that it had gotten that hot to start with, however. At least her pachee were always brought here in carriers- there was no chance of them touching the hot ground with their feet, and they were naturally shaded from the majority of the sun. She could imagine it getting stuffy in there, but they were well ventilated enough that there was no danger from it.

She sighed with relief as she entered the sliding doors to the breeding center, the air conditioning washing over her as she wiped her feet on the front mat. If she had sweat through these clothes, she never would have forgiven herself- they were couture, after all. She felt the pachee shift around inside their carriers as she walked in the door- it looked like they were happy to be in a cooler room now as well. Fiera decided to tend to them first before checking in- she was a little early for her room appointment after all. Some people decided to do walk-ins and see when the next slot was, but not her. She always made sure to book her rooms in advance so she could avoid waiting- and maybe snag a free breeding if her room wasn’t ready by the time she showed up. You had to have a certain shrewdness in this city after all, no matter what the breeding center employees said. The humanish walked over to the a nearby chair and set her carriers in it, catching a glance at the bright eyes that peeked at her through the bars as she walked away to a nearby water cooler.

She popped two paper cups out of the attached dispenser and filled them up to the brim with water, carrying them abck proudly to her pachee as if she had just bought them ice cream cones. “Here we go, darlings. Drink up!” She said sweetly, pressing the cups to the bars of the carriers. Immediately the pachees’ little paws shot out, the roots on the bottom of their feet sinking into the water held in the cups. The liquid disappeared faster than Fiera thought it was possible for them to drink, though they were silent in doing so. When the cups were empty the pachee seemed satisfied and certainly more relaxed. The humanish nodded with satisfaction and stood up, walking to the front desk. They had security cameras here, so her babies would probably be fine for the time being. “Hello there.” Fiera said as she leaned on the desk, eyeing the employee there. She had definitely seen this receptionist a couple times by now, though she would be damned if she could remember any of their names. “I’m here for a reservation under Ferella? For Deep Open Sea and Lost In Translation.” The receptionist nodded once and scrolled through their schedule.

“You’re here for a… houluh breeding?” The receptionist said, trying to make conversation. Fiera chuckled. “No, pachee.” She said. The receptionist raised an eyebrow, not used to hearing names so long for anything but houluh. “...Huh. Well, alright then.” Fiera was about to explain her reasoning behind the names and her process of name selection in an absolutely FASCINATING diatribe, but the receptionist rudely decided to hurry their conversation along. “Your room is already ready, so you cna head on in early! Lucky you! You’ll be going to room twelve on the left.” They said, handing Fiera a key and her receipt. “Well- Oh. Okay then.” Fiera said, a bit deflated at not getting to go on one of her characteristic rants, but for a good reason that she couldn’t really be upset about. “Thank you.” She said dejectedly, walking back to her pachee. “Hey guys, you all refreshed? We can head back now.” She said to her pachee, who simply looked back out at her with wide, adorable eyes. It didn’t take her long to pick them up and tuck them back under her arms before heading back toward and past the receptionist desk, gently pushing open the double doors next to it with one foot.

The room was pretty standard for a pachee breeding room, filled with soft, fragrant soil and a variety of fake plants. Fiera set up the carriers in the corner and opened up Lost’s crate first. “Hey girl, come here!” She said sweetly, getting the berries for this breeding out of her pocket. With any luck, they would make the results of this breeding extra nice. To her disappointment though, Lost just stared at her from inside the carrier, off somewhere else in her mind. “Oh, not again.” Fiera grumbled under her breath, and gently reached inside and grasped the pachee under her elbows. “Come on, out we come!” She said, lifting the pachee out of the carrier and setting her next to some ferns. The female quickly shook her head and looked around, as if seeing the room for the first time. She quickly perked up when Fiera offered her the berries again however, her ears flicking up. “Oh, NOW you pay attention, eh?” Fiera said teasingly, only for Lost to leap upon the berries with more enthusiasm than she was expecting. “Oh, uh, ok.” She said nervously as the pachee savaged the small fruits, absorbing their juices through the roots in her paws.

With Lost thoroughly entertained, Fiera opened Sea’s cage. The male stepped out with a lot more dignity and immediately traipsed over to the female, sniffing her gently. Lost seemed to ‘wake up’ from her trance of mashing up the berries and happily sniffed him as well. To Fiera’s surprise, Sea immediately began slapping his tail on the ground, releasing pollen. RIght down to business, as usual. Fiera was happy to see it though- it meant that hopefully this breeding would go a lot faster than she thought. As if answering her prayers, Lost began reacting quickly as well, the slit on her head opening to allow the pollen in. Fiera sat back and relaxed as they gently interacted from there. Despite the agony in getting to the breeding center today, this breeding had been relatively painless. A quick one two punch right after letting them in. Sure the environment helped, but Fiera was quite proud at what a compatible pair she had managed to pick. Really, had there ever been any reason to worry? Now all she had to do was sit back, relax, and wait for the beautiful babies to come- of which she was sure there would be many pretty ones.
