What, did this shrimp female have no fear? The bearman wondered to himself as he stood over her, more of an intimidation factor then anything. If he ever had armor, someone tried to associate him with one of the older and more dangerous lab rats, a giant armored hedgehog-bear whose tail ws a can opener. They were pushing up daisies now. “Boss Pels has no reason to talk to you. Git.” He growls. The lab rat with scales and wings hisses at him but he holds firm. No amount of big claws or teeth or even scales or attitude would gt this guy to move. Until... “Little bear! Little Bear!” A high pitched shout echoed down the dock. The bearman visibly stiffened in his posture, eyes wide and his jaw squished shut. “Where are you???” Both the shrimp female and the scaled lab rat looked a bit confused. Who was little bear? 16

“Didn’t thinks he’d check the address of our last letter.” The bearman mutters to himself, visibly ill at ease now. “What?-“ the bearman shushes her, grabs her arm, and drags her between two buildings. The lab rat snarls and tries to separate them but can’t fit betweent he two buildings. “What the hell was that about?!” The bearman tried to shush her. “Look, I done tell that kid I was tryig to make an honest living around here, okay? That it wasnt’ smart for her to come find me... and she did. Kid has no sense some days.” He ran stubby claws through his shaggy hair. He had to stay far enough back that Caiman’s claws didn’t rip him a new exposure. He starts babbling and something is quite off on his acting. “Okay, calm down.” She hadn’t made any move to touch the bearman, nor did Caiman. Whow as just confused. 17

She eased the bearman into sitting down against the wall of the building, as he started shaking like a leaf. Big difference from the intinmidating grouch of five minutes ago. ‘What are you doing. Leave it here.’ Caiman sneered, pacing outside the alleyway. ‘No, he has something to say, I’m sure of it.’ ‘I don’t believe that.’ The drake growled, as he looked around the area. Her partner’s paranoia behind, she sat down across from the shivering bearman. “So, you’re little bear?” He nods, with a lack of noise. “Its a cute name. I bet you were a cute cub.” He shifts in an embarassed manner. “Can you tell me why you’re hiding from this high pitched sounding person?” He sighs, exhaling heavily through his bear nose. “My family moved out to Pethia when loggers started cutting down our forest. I was still a cub... and didn’t understand what was going on around me. This place was called sanctuary. THey called use beastfolk.” 18

“Some people were very nice to us, getting my parents settled in a new home, just outside in the country. Lots of space for us to roam and forage. Even go into the city. But its... weird here. More then once, someone though we were runaway pets, even with wearing clothes and talking like them.” He continued his story. “I sent letters to my old friends in the forest to check on them, to make sure everyone was okay. Few came back, others didn’t. I couldn’t worry though, because my parents became too old to work. I... was still growing so I wasn’t good at much yet. The docks hired me as a runner as a cub and I got put on heavier lifting when I reached being a...” he seemed to be picking his words carefully. “An adult bear. But dock workers dont’ make much... and my parents are ill. We were staring to go hungry...” Caiman’s hiss from outside the area put Ridelys on auditory allert. 19

“Someone who ships things here approached me. They needed someone with muscle who could... well keep an eye out. Scare off some of the lesser folk. Because I’m so big. I”m paid well enough that I can feed my parents and myself, and they can use their savings for getting treatments.” He wrung his clawed hands together, looking guilty. A total opposite. “Do you know anything about the missing shipment?” Slowly, he nods. “Can you help me find it?” Again iwth the nervious wringing. “Whos’ the kid who’s looking for you” “My best friend when I was a cub. But I don’t want... her to see me like this. She’d hate me.” ‘Let her find him. I want to watch the carnage.’ Ridelys shut the link ‘door’ with a slam. Sometimes, she wondered on Caiman’s alignment of being neutral or evil. “I doublt she’d hate you, but would want to help yuou. I can help you, if you help me.” He cocks his head to one side, listening. “Its about that book shipment. I need to find it.” 20
