Lola were such fascinating creatures. The immature, floating little lotine could share their emotions and protect themselves with a strange aura. While he only had a single specimen in his collection that he truly fancied, having more would only help his personal research. And so here he was again with the rainbow-hued Valii. The lotine was growing more used to this whole 'getting carted to the breeding facility' thing, putting up less of a fuss each time. Not to say there wasn't any fuss still, but it was more manageable than the original flailing protest. The serpent did try to strangle his arm this time, just to pout, but no damage was done from the squeeze. The serpent was released into the pond, its rainbowed hide disappearing into the murk surprisingly quickly. Xentus sat at the edge of the water and rifled through his pack in an attempt to find his supplies amid the mess.

He had recently sent the droid to fetch some 'magical' food for Valii. Some kind of special fish? Xentus wasn't sure what kind of unique qualities the fish had in particular, but funnily enough, it had shimmery rainbow scales much like the lotine it was slated to feed. 'You are what you eat', the leopard thought to himself, chuckling, 'Or perhaps you eat what you are?' Philosophy wasn't his strong suit, despite often getting lost in thought.
A small array of supplies were procured from the pack; some gardening pellets, some enhancing water, smaller treats.. The leopard was considering bringing other supplies which might aid in this whole lola-berry producing process, but his mind came up short on what a lotine might be interested in. Thinking of their biology, there wasn't much to go on except that they primarily reproduced asexually.. And bonding with a lotine encouraged the growth of better lola.

A thought struck the leopard. Was there a way to.. Stimulate a lotine? A couple of hard blinks were the man's attempt to restrain his mind. But it had already gone down a path he never thought he would've actively consider. Was the flower on the lotine's head sensitive or receptive.. When the serpent eventually poked its head out of the water, Xentus stared hard at the black and white petals adorning its head. Oh this was weird. But he was driven by curiosity. And if it aided in better 'quality' lola, he was willing to explore the options available to him. A clawed hand reached forward to gingerly stroke the side of the creature's face. Its pitch black eyes gave no hint to its feelings, staring blankly forward in the man's general direction. Valii did lean in ever so slightly into the man's touch, giving into the gentle petting.

Now was as good a chance as any to explore his theory. An uneasy smile spread across the leopard's muzzle as he broadened his petting strokes. The skin of the creature was damp and somewhat velvety in texture. Like petting a moistened peach. Feeling up by its flower, the texture didn't change much. But the petals themselves were much harder than he imaged. They were nothing like the soft, delicate petals of a rose. They were stiff, but still had that slick powdery feel to them. Xentus watched the lotine carefully to gauge its reaction to his touch.. And it seemed indifferent overall. It did seem to enjoy the gentle petting, but in terms of finding it stimulating in some sense.. Nothing about the creature's behavior indicated such. Which was a relief. This didn't entirely disprove his theory, but it gave no evidence toward it. And that sat perfectly fine by him.

He didn't want to subject himself to masturbating a lotine to get it to produce better offspring. So that was a weight off his mind. Weren't these creatures particularly intelligent too? The idea was even more uncomfortable now. Xentus withdrew his hand, satisfied with his little experiment for the moment. Right, on to something else. "Hungry, dear Valii?", the leopard asked, showing the lotine the multicolored fish. Its demeanor seemed to shift, perking up and seeming more attentive at the sight of food alone. A gentle smile lifted the man's lip. The fish was given to the similarly colored creature, quickly snapped up by its paws and whisked away into the depths. "Enjoy"
While the serpent lurked beneath the water's surface, Xentus decided to use the garden supplies on the watery pond. He wasn't sure if they even did anything for the lotine, but he figured they didn't hurt to use.

A couple of enhancing drops, a couple of pellets, and the water was as fertilized as it was going to get. Probably. Lotine were plants, but they could eat fish.. And could also probably photosynthesize? It was mostly a mystery to the man. There wasn't much to glean from the research from the labs which made the creatures. Xentus deeply sighed, staring at his reflection wavering in the water. Bonding with the serpent was the only other thing to work on. And that simply needed time. And he'd need to figure what the creature liked more than swimming and eating fish. All things considered, a companion which enjoyed swimming and fish would be perfect to bring to the river. Perhaps he would bond with Valii there. The locale was peaceful, the fish were plentiful. Or he could keep it as company in the comfort of their garden as he did chores.

But there were already so many other creatures he'd been meaning to spend time with. Ah, why was there so little time in a day? The lotine was lucky to even have his time right now. There was an impending sarane tournament he'd been meaning to get in on.. And no trained sarane to enter with. It was a reminder that there was a lot to do with his personal menagerie. One thing at a time, he had to remind himself. The leopard lay down in the grass, dripping his fingers into the cool pond water. Perhaps he'd deem this as meditation time. Relax with a lotine and unwind. Perhaps another time he'd select a larger pond and have a swim with the serpent. His daydreaming was interrupted when his fingers were bumped by a velvety head. Valii poked her head out of the water, a fish tail poking out of her mouth.

"Enjoy the meal, dear Valii?", the leopard cooed gently to the rainbowed serpent, "This one hopes so." Its blank black eyes stared at him as it nudged itself into his hand. A chuckle escaped the man, giving into the non-verbal demand for pets and affection. The magical fish was a costly expense, so he could only hope the serpent would appreciate it. And instead it demanded to be spoiled. His heart was too soft not to give into the demands. He rubbed the velvety hide of the creature, stroking along its head and down one of its long tendrils. What even were these? They weren't ears.. Probably. He guessed them to be some kind of sensory organ though. Something that would be useful in the water. Like to detect chemicals or currents or perhaps even the electrical pulses of fish swimming by. He liked the third idea the most. Or they really could just be ears.

A chuckle escaped the leopard. For being such simple looking plant-creatures, lotine sure were a mystery. One thing he longed to hear was the creature's song. Something reserved for those who have cared for their serpents well. Xentus hoped he'd reach that point eventually. Ah, but yet again, the barrier was time. His clawed hand gently pet along another one of the lotine's long tendrils. It slid out of his hand as the lotine ducked back down into the water to finish its meal. An idea struck the man; he could bring some toys for Valii to play with. To retrieve from the bottom of the pond. Enriching and simple. And hopefully not belittling to the intelligent being. The man shook his head. No, they'd need to do something more interesting. Perhaps explore some of the creature's natural abilities? The rainbowed-pelted serpent could probably conjure a rainbow for itself. The idea amused him.

Spurring it to act and use said rainbow would be a challenge. If he could simply ask the creature.. And have it understand his meaning.. That might make it a little more possible. Xentus made a mental note, enjoying the idea of having the lotine understand his tongue a bit better. He'd teach some lessons to Valii and Haru in the garden. Not something he'd take on doing any time soon, but he figured it would better their bond. Valii soon reemerged from the depths of the pond, fishy meal now fully finished. She propped herself up on the water's edge before the leopard, staring at him with those dark eyes.
"This one has no more food for you, Valii", Xentus apologized in a sad tone, "Fret not, he shall procure more next time we visit this place, alright?" Even though the serpent didn't understand the man's words, it knew that tone of voice. Sad. Unable to fulfil its desire. But.. It would settle for more pets. For now.
