Another thought was to find a means of automated throwing. There was a batting cage here… The thought of pelting the nyssa through means which wasn’t by his own hand relieved the burden of guild from himself ever so slightly. And Eden wouldn’t see him as some sort of monster who throws things at it. After spending a good fifteen minutes tenderizing under the waterfall, Xentus called for Eden to release from its post. The nyssa was more than happy to be freed from that awful pelting of water, racing as quickly as it could out of the falls. It shook itself violently to rid itself of the excess moisture, soaking Xentus in the process. “Good job, Eden. Let us ah… Try something else”, the man praised quietly, still sheepish about this next idea of his. Eden seemed to respond well enough, if only because it was happy to no longer have to stand under the waterfall.

The batting cage was a short distance away, equipped with a net and a machine that threw balls. It looked like it could manage to throw heavier weight balls, given the hefty appearance. They’d start simple with softballs. Which, contrary to the name, were not soft. They were firm and would certainly leave a good welt if thrown hard at someone. Eden was given a place to stand, square in front of the machine. Xentus tried to prompt it into a more defensive position, shoulder front, but it seemed very confused with whatever he was trying to accomplish. It managed a half-defended stance at least. And with that, Xentus returned to the pitching machine and loaded it up, then sighed. “Alright, Eden. Stay there…”, he warned and flicked the machine on. It whirred to life and after a brief pause, shot at the first ball at Eden. It struck square at its side, causing the nyssa’s bark to groan and flake.

Eden grated its jaws with rising anger at the sudden attack, eyes scanning for the culprit. The pitching machine gained its ire, to which Xentus stepped in and tried to calm it down. “No, no, Eden.. This is ah.. The task at hand. Please, endure this”, the leopard explained apologetically, raising a hand to rub the spot that was struck. The nyssa’s amber eyes looked at its keeper, trying to read information on whatever was going on here on his face, and only saw that apologetic look. Its anger slowly calmed, leaves rustling as if they were blowing in the wind. If this was the job… It would accept it. The strike was more surprising than it was painful, as it turned out. It would be able to endure this trial, even if begrudgingly. The nyssa was returned to its position in front of the pitching machine, and Xentus flicked the machine back on.

“Brace yourself, Eden!”, Xentus warned as the next ball fired. His words were ultimately lost to the nyssa unfortunately, who took the shot straight in the chest. Its foot stomped against the ground in response to the surprise and sting of the impact. By the looks of it, Xentus thought it might be better to go a bit more gentle on the tree… But if it were in a fight, there wasn’t anything that would feel that it would go easy on a nyssa. Large, imposing, durable, and strong. Only a fool would find themselves letting their guard down in a fight against one. The next shot was fired against the tree, striking its leg. Eden did little in the way of bracing itself for impact. No, it seemed to realize there was little true damage inflicted upon it. Against flesh, these balls would bruise, but against wood and bark it bounced away without a trace.

Eden’s previously fired-up response quickly loosened into a complacent one. It could take the impacts with no real consequence. The next ball that bounced off the nyssa’s chest solidified the concept to both the tree and its keeper. A relief to Xentus, but also a sign that he needed to hit it with something harder. There was no shortage of weights around the area and Xentus was quick to find the next challenge up from softballs. Sandbags. The impact would be spread over a greater area, but the increased weight should be more impactful than the softballs. They were seamlessly loaded into the pitching machine and soon the Nyssa found a need to defend itself as the pelting suddenly grew in force. Leaves rustled once more, this time broadcasting how the creature was taken aback. “Endure it, Eden!”, Xentus encouraged again while loading the machine with varying weights. Hopefully this won't break it…

The whirring of the machine grew louder as the difficulty of firing the increased heft took its toll. The nyssa found itself hit with stronger and stronger force, gradually increasing to the point where it did begin to hurt its bark skin. Impacts against its softer belly hurt the most, and this it learned quickly. Its pose changed so that its abdomen was no longer so openly exposed. Its shoulder and side were taking the brunt of the impacts now, and while it wasn’t exactly comfortable, it hurt a lot less than taking a hit to the gut! “That’s it, Eden! Stay strong!”, the man encouraged over the sound of the pitching machine as it flung another weight over at the nyssa. It was strong and resilient, and wouldn’t be brought down by such an assault! Eden bracing itself with its shoulder paid off well, feeling the impacts leave less of a sting where its bark was thickest.

If there was anything quickly learned by the living, it was to reduce pain as quickly as possible. Or avoid it outright. Knowing that its job was to defend against these thrown weights, avoiding the hurt wasn’t an option.. But reducing it as best it could was. It withstood against the might of the pitching machine for a few more shots before Xentus loaded up the final weight. It was heavy in his hands, in part from the guilt he felt from this exercise. And soon after it left his grasp, it was shot from the machine and flew toward Eden with shattering force. If he were on the receiving end, it might leave more than just an ugly bruise. But Eden was resilient, and took the impact without flinching. “Good job, Eden!”, Xentus praised as he turned off the machine, “That went ah… Well enough, yes? Xentus thinks that is enough” He wouldn’t be able to bear having Eden go through this any further!
