Rift may have been ethereal, but he was still able to attack solid beings. The early documentation for the halfbreeds hadn't listed much in the way of abilities, but there had been a team of researchers that had taken up study of halfbreeds, and a lot of 'species' had been announced to have more abilities than previous lab notes had suggested. Could any of those abilities catch fish? Well, he couldn't have a worse shot at it than Nerius.
Who was still struggling to try to attach the new lure. The line was thin and transparent, and hard to see to thread through the ring at the top of the lure. It was probably easier than a hook, to be fair, and after a bit of frustration, Nerius managed to get it threaded. He had no reference for what the knot was supposed to be like, as said reference had fallen in the river.

While the knot was complex enough that he wouldn't have been able to mimic it even with a reference, Nerius well and truly had no idea what he was doing now. Not having any better option, he just.. tied a regular knot. Then knotted it a few more times, then tied the line a few more times around itself. The end result was an ugly, lumpy mass, and undoubtedly painful for any proper fisherman or sailor, but hopefully at least wouldn't come loose. The most annoying part about that wouldn't be the loss of the lure, he had more supplies, but rather that he'd have to try to attach one again.
Rift gave no attention or care to Nerius' struggles with the lure, and stared down into the water. He could see movement that wasn't water, every so often, but nothing near enough to the surface that he could swoop down and grab.

[15] Not terribly confident but as sure as he was going to get, Nerius moved on to looking for a place to actually cast the line. Not that he knew what to look for other than wanting open water where it wouldn't (hopefully) get snagged on anything. The area in front of him was clear, that would.. work? Huh, actually, Nerius wondered if he should stick some pellets on the hook. Sure the lure looked enticing, but didn't smell like food. Did fish have a sense of smell? Did that even matter? Sharks were attracted to blood, right? So, maybe this was similar? Nerius stuck a few pellets on the hook, just in case.
Now he just had to cast it.. somehow. You just sort of.. flipped it, right? Still having absolutely no idea what he was doing, Nerius 'flipped' the fishing rod, and the line (surprisingly) actually cast... right into Rift. Opps. It was a good thing he was ethereal, and though he jerked as the line sailed through, was unharmed.

Rift twisted around, trying to find the source of the thing that had just gone straight through him, and after a few moments of confusion, his eyes landed on Nerius. The shadowy creature couldn't speak, but the look he was giving said 'what the fuck?' Not so much angry, just confused.
"Um, sorry about that," Nerius didn't think the shadestalker could understand speech, though shadow lurkers were sentient, but it couldn't hurt. Rift continued to stare at him for a little longer, before gliding away from the line. Nerius was just glad he hadn't flung a fish hook into a solid wiurn.
...What was he supposed to do with the line now, anyway? Reel it in? Just let it sit there? Was movement important? The pale blobby things hadn't required movement to be lured to the pellets Nerius had sprinkled in the water, would having the lure sitting there be enough to attract fish?

Ugh, he really should have brought along someone who knew what they were doing, or at least found a book on it, or something. Or better yet, purchased fish off of someone else and taken those to the trader. That was why he was here, after all, not because of a sudden urge for the nautical, but because the trader often wanted fish of all things in exchange for magical crystals. It didn't sound like a good trade at all to Nerius, but if the trader wanted to give crystals for seafood, he wouldn't turn it down.
Assuming he could actually catch any fish. Nothing was biting yet, fishing was a waiting game, from what he had heard, but he had no idea what was a reasonable wait, and a 'should move to a better spot' wait. Rift wasn't any help with that part, he seemed content to float above the river to observe.. fish? The water? (Rift: Lv: 3, 17/20 | Lyl: 5, 17/20) (Nerius: 17/20)

It would have been nice if the shadestalker could spot fish, then point out a good area for Nerius to cast the line. But as it was, he had no idea if Rift was watching fish swimming around, or if he was just fascinated with the running water, which was a new experience for him.
If he had been watching fish, that would be a good sign for the spot Nerius was fishing in, given that the line had gone through the shadestalker. Nothing was biting, but that easily could be from Nerius' lack of knowledge or skill in fishing. Maybe he was supposed to move it? Slowly, more due to being unfamiliar with the reel than out of caution, Nerius reeled in the line. Not so much as a nibble, but at least lure looked like it was staying attached without any issues, and the pellets were still on the hook beneath the tentacles.

The unfortunate thing about having reeled in the line was that now he'd need to cast it again. Ideally without hitting the shadestalker, or worse, anything solid, again. The river was wide enough that he didn't have to worry about hitting the other bank, but it was shallow in some parts, and he didn't want to have to wade out to untangle the lure from an underwater log or something.
Doing his best to avoid the crossbreed, Nerius cast the line again. It didn't go as far as it had last time, but at least avoided hitting any obstacles. Rift looked up at the sound, Nerius suspected might have recognized it from when the last cast had gone through him. But, not having been 'hit' this time, he stared at the line for only a few seconds, before turning his attention back to the water. Nerius was starting to think there really were fish down there, with how interested he was.

It was probably too much to hope that he'd actually catch something, especially since the shadowy creature was ethereal. It wasn't like Rift could actually grab a fish in his claws to retrieve it. At least it meant that there were some fish in the area, even if they'd been ignoring the lure so far.
Maybe because it wasn't sinking deep enough? Sure aquarium fish ate flakes from the surface, but maybe these ones preferred more cover? The lure was floating rather close to the surface, Nerius could see occasional flashes of pink. He did have some bullet weights to help it sink, maybe he should try that? This whole trip had far too many 'maybes', but lacking a solid plan Nerius reeled it back in, and took the weights out of his supplies. These looked straightforward to attach, at least, designed to clamp around the line, and soft enough to squeeze shut even with his limited strength.
