The weather was a bit overcast as he headed out, but Nerius had heard that encouraged the fish to bite, or something. Or maybe it was rain; he really didn't actually know what he was doing. But the weather was warm enough, with no wind, and despite the clouds it was a nice day. The water was calm, the birds were chirping, the giant shadow dragon was still following him.
It was his own giant shadow dragon, but Nerius had no idea why the halfbreed referred to as a shadestalker had decided to follow him out of the kennel today. At least it wasn't the other one, Rift was more laid back than his sister, but it was the first time he'd done this. Being an ethereal creature, Rift could pass through walls, and was difficult to contain, but there should have been wards around the part of the kennel that contained his ethereal creatures.

But for now, he had a rather unusual fishing buddy. Well, he was pretty sure a giant shadow dragon was unusual, people liked to bring houluh along for fishing trips, right? At least, he'd seen something on a houluh breeding magazine about houluh and fishing. Nerius still had no idea how to fish. He'd picked up a brochure about the area known as 'the river bend', but it was more about the locale, and less the specifics on fishing.
He didn't even know how to pick a good spot, he'd been walking along the shore for a while now, and while it was a scenic trip, he had no idea where the fish would be most likely to be. Rift wasn't any help here, this wasn't like his gem dragon who'd sniff out minerals in the earth without his prompting. Rift, while vaguely intrigued by the flowing water, wasn't exactly sniffing out fish.

At least he probably wasn't scaring them away. He was unusually quiet for such a large creature, probably because he didn't have to physically touch the ground, and just sort of glide-flew along behind Nerius. Those little wings of his couldn't possibly support mechanical flight, and had to be driven by some sort of magic.
Nerius' contemplating of the magical nature of his creature was interrupted by the sound of a splash from the river. Was that a fish? Nerius paused, and scanned the river, he could see faint ripples, but whatever had caused them had sunk below the water. There were trees lining the river, but if it had been a falling branch, that would have floated to the surface. He kept looking, and after a minute or so, there was another splash, and this time he spotted the glimmer of fish scales. Well, that was the best sign he was going to get with his limited fishing knowledge, this would have to be the spot.

Now, was there anywhere for him to put his stuff that wasn't on the ground? It was more rocky than muddy here, but the backpack wasn't waterproof, and Nerius didn't want it getting all mucky. He also hadn't brought a chair, and would rather somewhere to sit, if possible. There were some good sized rocks on the other side of the river, but he wasn't about to wade, or swim, over just for some seating.
There was the dead, dried out remains of a fallen tree not too far, probably driftwood, and after applying a little pressure to make sure it wouldn't collapse, set his pack on the log, leaning the pole and net to the side. Rift watched as Nerius set out the objects, gliding down to a landing on the shore, though his feet didn't dislodge any of the pebbly river stones. At least, being ethereal, Nerius didn't think he could physically mess with the fishing supplies.

Not that he was leaving most of them out. Nerius hadn't bought anything to carry his bait and tackle in, and had put all the little items into a plastic leftover container. It.. worked, though was disorganized, and he didn't want to use it for his own food anymore. The reel on the pole looked rather complicated, maybe he'd start with something simpler. Would it work to just, sprinkle a few pellets into the water and try to net the fish? There was a patch where the water was slow enough they wouldn't all rush away.
Feeling a bit silly, and like he was maybe going to be wasting bait, Nerius picked of the net, and walked over to the river bank, reaching out to sprinkle a few pellets, watching for any movement in the water. Rift took advantage of his distraction to go inspect the backpack, and the rest of his fishing gear.

After sprinkling in the pellets, which felt quite a bit like feeding his seryn, but with bigger chunks, Nerius waited. At first, there was nothing, and he started to think he might have just wasted the bait. But after few more moments, he saw something moving up from the deeper parts of the water. As it got closer to the pellets, Nerius could see it wasn't a fish.
What the fuck is that? It was a.. blobby.. thing. It was sort of oval, and ruffly, and even with his lack of aquatic experience, Nerius was pretty sure it wasn't a fish. Or, they weren't fish, because a second one of the things had.. swum? over to the bait. Rift hadn't noticed the odd things in the river, and was more interested in inspecting the fishing rod. It was shiny, and wiggly, and he kept trying to nudge it with his nose, only to phase through it.

Nerius wasn't paying attention to the shadestalker at the moment, and was too busy watching the strange blobby things. He still hadn't the faintest idea what they were though, but he should probably.. catch them? Technically his idea had worked, it just hadn't attracted what he'd consider fish. Well, as long as the trader would take them, it didn't really matter.
He was holding the long handled net, and gently, as to hopefully not startle the things, dipped it into the water. The blob things didn't seem to mind, or maybe even notice, it was hard to tell with something like that. Slowly, Nerius slipped the net under the one on the left, and scooped it up. It wiggled fiercely, clearly not liking being out of the water, but there wasn't anything it could do about it. The movement did draw Rift's attention, and the shadestalker turned his head to look over at what was going on.

The odd creature didn't have any way of escaping the net, but Nerius figured he should still hurry, it was a water dweller, and probably couldn't breathe air. He'd brought along an empty bucket to put anything living in, and quickly, Nerius scooped it into the river, filling it about halfway. Once there was water, he carefully released the little blob thing into the bucket. It wiggled around the small space, still agitated, but seemingly unharmed, and Nerius figured he should catch the other one before it ate all the pellets and wandered off.
The other blob was still there, and either didn't notice or care that its 'buddy' has disappeared. Nerius scooped the net in, but missed as it spotted (did it even have eyes?) one of the last few pellets, and moved just as he moved up the net. Rift was finding this more interesting than a pole he couldn't touch, and was starting to make his way over to where Nerius was.

But Nerius still had a blob to catch, and taking advantage of it staying still to eat, swept in with the net much faster than before. With the first blob, he hadn't wanted to disturb the water too much, and risk scaring off the second. But he didn't have to worry about that now, and scooped up the second blob critter before it could wiggle away. It was wiggling plenty in the net, and Nerius gently dropped it into the bucket with its buddy. Well, he hoped they were 'buddies', or at least not territorial, and wouldn't mind being in a bucket together.
And hopefully the shadestalker wouldn't try to eat them or something! Because Rift had snuck up on him, and lowered his head down to peer into the bucket at the strange, wiggly blobs. "Rift no! Those aren't for you!" the sound of his voice distracted the halfbreed at least, because Rift didn't actually understand him in the slightest.

Rift paused, and looked at Nerius for a moment. He doubted this distraction would last long, and quickly secured the lid to the bucket. Rift gave a low hiss of disappointment, staring at the bucket for a while longer, before the flowing water nearby became more interesting. Disaster averted. Nerius had no idea if the shadestalker would have actually tried anything, it wasn't like he ate actual food. But if he had some wiurn instincts encouraging him to try, he may have been ethereal, but he could harm the things if he wanted. At the very least, the attempt would have frightened the little things, and they were probably already stressed out enough from being caught.
Now, how else should he try to catch something. The pellet sprinkle had technically worked, but he'd rather have actual fish. Maybe it was worth it to try the pole? He'd spent the credits on it after all. Bringing the bucket with him, Nerius went back over to his supplies, staring at the tackle for a moment before selecting a wiggly pink lure.

Now he just had to attach it... somehow. The rubbery.. thing had a hook built into it, so it wasn't like he was supposed to just shove it on another hook like a piece of bait. There was a hook already attached to the line, just a basic one, but maybe he could see how it was attached. Nerius set the lure aside, and inspected the hook.
It was tied on. With a very complicated looking knot that he did not have the name for, or any idea how to repeat it. Maybe he could just shove the lure on top? No, that would be even more likely to fall off than his attempt at knots.
Rift was uninterested in the lure, and was far more interested in the river. He sniffed at the few pieces of bait that remained, the odd blobby things having been captured before they could eat all of it.

Taking his pocket knife, and holding the hook in a way to avoid spearing his fingers, he cut it from the line.. only to drop it in the water with a soft, mocking 'plop'. Nerius just stared down at the ripples for a few seconds. Well, shit. There was no getting that back now. At least he'd brought extras, though still had no idea how to properly attach them.
Rift didn't find the soggy bait terribly appealing, or maybe he didn't have any way to actually eat it. The information on the crossbreed had been rather sparse, and there was a lot Nerius wasn't sure about with them. The water itself was more interesting, and spreading his skeletal wings, he glided out over the river, looking down into the water. Nerius glanced up from the fishing rod as he saw the shadow move in his peripheral vision. At this rate the shadestalker was more likely to catch something than he was.
