It had been a rough third of a month by the time that Renathan was able to get a break from work long enough to decide that it was time to take on another quest. He liked to go out and help the community as much as possible- but sometimes it took more energy than he could afford during his work week! The russet mammalian has to make a difficult choice, as he always does, on which critter he wanted to bring with him. He decides quite quickly that Auburn would be a great choice- as long as he avoided all of the dangerous quests that sometimes were given. They tended to be the best rewarders, but he had been missing his little friend for a while now. She was enjoyable to be around. He walks to the quest board quite quickly that day, with Auburn riding on his shoulder as pleased as punch! [1]

Renathan would normally spend some time enjoying the day and taking a long walk, but the truth was that though he had today to work on something- he certainly had to go back to work tomorrow and he really needed to do other things tonight to prepare for what would probably prove to be one of the more difficult days at work- he needed to close up shop. Only temporarily- he needed to change the name of the cafe and also work on the new decor. The name had been too close to the name of another area that opened up, and the change was a necessary one to keep his establishment proper by his own feelings.
As such, he got to the quest board quickly, not bothering to pay much attention to how the spring was slowly maturing from tender-leafiness to dog-hot alarmingly quickly. Instead, he finds himself scouring the board's offerings and trying not to be pestered by Auburn as she preened.

Auburn was preening a little more than usual. She lost a little bit of her wintery fluff in the spring each year and it seemed to drive her mad- but she never lost enough of it to really help her with the heat. Soon enough, he'd have to start giving her frozen treats again to help her cool down. He felt a little bad for her during the hotter part of the year. She sits on his shoulder, and though he tries to focus on the slips of paper before him, he really has a hard time doing it while the little Izer was shaking his shoulder with her preening. Finally, he very gently lifts her off of his shoulder- gives her a snug, and then places the izer down on a nearby fencepost. He tells her to stay, and then turns to look at what quests are available that wouldn't cause her to be in danger this month.

Finally, Renathan finds one that he likes- something about a farm? He had been skimming them and quickly deciding against ones that required fighting or anything of the sort. He just wasn't feeling that kind of stuff today- and it wasn't like he particularly needed to take on anything like that. There were people out there more suited to that. He picks the one off of the board that he was looking at, and brings it closer to his face to read properly. Apparently one of his neighbors (though Miisaa did seem like it would stretch on forever and ever sometimes) that he didn't recognize needed someone to get rid of some pests that might be hiding out in their barn. That didn't really narrow it down any- truthfully he didn't really pay attention much to his neighbors (he lived quite far off of the beaten path) and just about everyone on that street had barns.
Auburn finishes her preening on one wing, and starts on the other.

Renathan was certain that they would be able to do this particular quest quite easily. Auburn didn't know how to hunt or anything like that, but Renathan was sure that they could kill a few pests with some of her cold-like attacks! The russet mammalian chose this one, and then goes to make sure that the questing society knew that someone had taken this one. Along the way to o that, Renathan scoops Auburn up and plants her back on his shoulder. She seemed confused at first, but quickly went back to 'happy' and preening. Auburn was really the sweetest, it was difficult not to adore her- she was the best pet.
After making sure that he was registered for the quest, Renathan immediately left with Auburn to go to the address listed. It couldn't be too far down the street from Renathan's own home, could it? Sure, Miisaa was long (like most city streets) but how long could it be?

The answer wound up being that while Renathan lived closer to one end of the street- this individual lived far away on the other side of the street. Renathan had gotten turned around for a while, until he began noticing that the mail boxes were counting up instead of down. He turns around, and begins walking in the other direction. If Auburn noticed or was perturbed by this- she did not show it. Instead, they continued going on towards the correct direction with a renewed pace. Soon enough, they made it to the place indicated on the quest slip. Renathan checked it twice over to make sure, and then decides to go up to the front door. It was a quaint little farmhouse- nice brick all the way down it and twisted iron that was just on the 'purposeful' side of rustic. He walks to the front door and gently raps on the door with his knuckles.

After knocking, the russet mammalian drops his hand to his side, and it doesn't take long for the door to be opened. Renathan takes a polite step back, lowering his stance slightly because he knows that he cuts an intimidating figure and it wasn't required at the moment. The individual that steps out is a broad, bronzed human. Fairly tall and muscular, but with bright blue eyes. He was older, but not elderly- Renathan realizes practicably at this point. It had been so difficult for him to tell the age of different sorts of people when he had first immigrate here. Renathan realizes that he probably would not have had to make himself a little less intimidating for this human. "I'm here to correct your pest issue." Renathan says, awkwardly. He's not entirely sure how to put it. The human looks at his shoulder, where Auburn sits, warily. 'That a mouser?' the human asks. Renathan grins sheepishly beneath the mask. "Of a sort."

This seemed to be good enough for the quest-giver. He simply shrugs, and waves Renathan to the back. 'There is a big red barn back there- can't miss it. Let the Murp out into the paddock and get to work.' It was gruff, but straightforward and Renathan was fine with it. He quickly goes back to get to work, Auburn on his shoulder making soft pleased noises. She seemed to enjoy the smells around- in fact, she could probably smell the pests already. She was mostly a nut eater, but she did get to eat rodents sometimes. Perhaps that would help Renathan out today with this quest. The barn was quite an imposing figure cut across the rolling hillocks in the back yard- but Renathan was used to that. He walks straight up to the front door and lets himself in, while opening the back to allow the Murp to get out into the yard. They weren't frightened of him at all!

That was a little odd. Usually critters that were raised by one type of person were typically afraid of more predatory-looking individuals or differently looking ones. Renathan was used to it, at this point. However, the Murp just walked out of the barn all chill-like! Renathan was pretty pleased. Well, it was time to search and destroy some pests! Renathan finds himself a hay-bale and then sits it in the middle of the room. He sits on top of it with Auburn right next to him- and he waits. It doesn't take long for the little pests to crawl out from the woodwork- and goodness were there so many! Eating the hay, eating the grain, eating the leftovers of the murp! It was a mess. Renathan had to decide what to do- what to allow Auburn to do. He finally decides for her to screech- and he gives her the command quite quickly.

Auburn lets out a horrific screech- and all of the pests stop Immediately. Some of them pop over onto their sides- heaving strongly. Renathan tilts his head and quickly gives the next command, pointing to the little pests. Auburn pins her ears back a bit and produces a harsh stream of ice out onto the pests. Each one that they saw, Renathan had her attack. Soon- the inside of the barn was covered in ice- and all of the pests were dead.
The new problem was the ice... Renathan hadn't been thinking about that! "Gah..." Renathan lets out, exasperatedly. He goes to grab a shovel, to shovel all of the ice out of the door. Auburn stays mostly out of the way, digging at the ice to get at the little meaty bits. After an hour and a half of work, the pair have all of the ice chunks out in the hot sun melting in the grass, and they go to turn in the quest.
[10] - [End, the pair goes home.]
