It had been some time since he'd last thought of bringing Valii to the breeding center.. Life had been busy for the leopard, and producing more lola for research wasn't exactly on the top of his to-do list. Strangely enough, any time he'd passed by the pond in the garden, he'd usually catch a peek of anticipation from the lotine. Xentus got the feeling that after the first couple of experiences blossoming lola, perhaps Valii came to enjoy the process? Getting out of the garden, carted away to a very comfortable pool, getting to eat (apparently) magical fish.. Was all apparently fairly nice for the serpentine creature. Or perhaps she simply was looking for some attention. Often times, the leopard had to remind himself that lotine were beings of higher thought. Creatures with a will, desires, dreams.. Ah, one of these days he'd get another one of those magical ribbons to have a nice little chat with Valii.

Being able to talk to the lotine would probably make this whole lola-making thing a lot less boring too. Sitting at the water's edge and offering up snacks wasn't the most thrilling activity. What was something to do to pass the time while tending to the serpent.. He could find a larger pool and swim with her. And with the amulet he toted around everywhere, being underwater for a while wouldn't bother him any. The man hummed while contemplating activities. Valii was just waiting for him to make up his mind already. The lotine stared at her guardian from just beneath the surface of the garden pond, wondering what he was up to there. He didn't usually spend this much time around her pond unless he was planning to bring her out. A twinge of excitement passed through the serpent's coiled body. Getting to see more of the outside would be nice for a change..

"Valii", the man called at the water. He could just barely make out the lotine's snake-like shape beneath his mirrored reflection in the water. The creature's bright colors made her stand out fairly well. Like a rainbowed koi in a pond.. Admiring the shape and play of colors in the ripples distracted Xentus from realizing the creature had poked her head out of the water, until she hummed a wailing note. Xentus blinked and shook his head, snapping back to reality. "Ah, there you are", he cooed, reaching out a clawed hand to pet the serpent. He was never sure how to greet the.. More intelligent beings in his care. He certainly thought himself as their guardian. Like a parent to a child. Except, he didn't quite know at what point to stop treating them like children. Valii leaned into the man's touch, accepting his affections well enough it seemed.

The lotine's black eyes stared deeply at the leopard. The gaze was returned with a gentle smile as his hand smoothed the fur on her cheek. For being suspended in water, the lotine was surprisingly still under his touch - aside from the subtle motions of her head pressing into his hand. He hadn't seen her act like this before, but it was rather endearing. Being in no rush, he didn't mind savoring the tender moment. A thought struck him.. A somewhat dubious one, at that. Lotine were known for being able to bond well with their keepers, and those with stronger bonds often produced what were regarded as 'better quality' lola. And the capacity for falling in love was one that he assumed wasn't beyond a lotine's capabilities.. The lotine held her stare. Xentus's gaze wavered. Perhaps he was putting pieces together in the wrong way but he didn't know quite enough about this..

What was even the best thing to do, with the assumptions coming to mind? To let the lotine go without unreturned affections, possibly leading to frustration? To.. Let her down gently? The difference of species was a complicated idea when it came to beings of higher thought. One wouldn't bat an eye at a human and mammalian forging a relationship, but for either one to say the loved a lotine would raise suspicion. And it wasn't like there was such a thing as a male lotine to nurse any romance for the species. With that being the case, though.. Perhaps he was thinking this all wrong anyway. With no natural partner, he supposed a guardian wouldn't serve as a 'replacement' for a romantic interest. A lotine would have no need for romance in the first place. A part of the leopard calmed, happy to have his mind away from such thoughts.

Now, forging a perfectly loving relationship like that of a child and parent seemed much better suited for a species like the lotine. They had lola which they.. Probably naturally grew at some point in their lives, but perhaps it was the added stimulation of care which brought them to produce more frequently. Like how one might garner a more bountiful harvest of fruit from a well-kept tree. Lotine were regarded as plants, after all. Yes, this made sense. Xentus's mind calmed and he breathed a sigh of relief. That was a mental detour he was not expecting to have made this morning.
"Alright, Valii. Let us get going, yes?", the leopard murmured as he withdrew his hand and straightened out. The carriage wasn't going to wait forever, after all. He wasn't sure for how long he'd been meandering in thought, but hopefully it wasn't more than a couple of minutes.

Carting Valii off to the facility wasn't a struggle this time. The lotine willingly left her pond and was far less squirmy than usual about being awkwardly carried into the carriage's cabin. Though.. Xentus couldn't help but to feel like the lotine was continuously staring at him whenever he took a moment to look at her. It was impossible to tell what she was thinking with that gaze of hers. Xentus brought the lotine to a bigger pond at the breeding center and took a moment to rummage through his pack to make sure he had the things he needed. Which wasn't much, just some of his usual gardening supplies and food - for both himself and Valii. Now in the water again, the lotine was below the surface, making herself comfortable in these new surroundings. While the garden-like area was pretty to look at on the surface, there was a certain sterility to the water itself.

Valii, already a little bored of this new pond, rose to the surface and playfully splashed a bit of water at the leopard to gather his attention. He loosed a surprised 'ah?' before his face calmed to a gentle smile. He still seemed busy sorting through his pack, making the lotine wait at the water's edge for a while longer before finally giving her his full attention. "Here, this is for you, Valii", he said as he offered forth a rainbowed fish over the water. It was colored just as she was, so feeding it to her felt.. Somewhat odd. But Valii seemed to accept the fish all the same. With a small leap from the water, the lotine grabbed the fish and swam away with it to feast on out of sight. Xentus gave a chuckle and settled himself at the edge of the pool, rolling up his pants to let his feet dangle within the warm water.

The morning summer sun wasn't blasting searing heat. It was a nice, radiant warmth so far.. Combined with the water on his legs, he felt pretty comfortable relaxing here. Thoughts of actually going for a swim in the pond cross his mind again, but it would mean he'd be pretty wet still on the way home.. Excusable for the serpent that usually was in the water. Less so for the leopard. Maintaining appearances wasn't the biggest concern to Xentus, but he'd rather stay somewhat presentable if he could help it. Suddenly, he felt something brush up against his foot and creep up his leg. A brow raised in surprise as Valii poked her head out of the water, resting it on his lap. Her fish, still uneaten, hung out of her mouth. "Why hello there", the man cooed and chuckled, welcoming the serpent back. The lotine began clambering onto his lap, heaving her large body out of the water and onto the man.

Well, guess his pants were getting soaked no matter what he did. A small sacrifice to make for the comfort of his ward. He didn't mind though. If this was where Valii wanted to be, he was all the happier for it. Part of him was elated to think the serpent had grown so fond of his company. To even come up on his lap to eat? That wasn't something he figured would happen. Valii seemed to enjoy eating her meals far from the presence of others, perhaps out of fear that her snack would get thieved by someone else. Most of the other creatures in the garden had little regard for personal space, especially the pachee.. Xentus tentatively rested a hand on the lotine's back, stroking the rainbowed pelt as the creature ate. As far as he could tell, she seemed to like it.. Or maybe it was just that she was enjoying the fish.
