A pleasant weather full of early summer warmth and sunlight drew the lepus back to the garden once more, for to remained the ideal time with which to tend it. Winter had left precious little with which to keep his time and mind occupied, and now with summer's onset there was opportunity once more. In truth, he had already done much of the preparation work a month prior, once the snow had melted and given way to softer earth once more. On many of the garden beds the soil had been upturned to aerate and free up the nutrients deep below.
Many, though not quite all beds. The south part of the garden had been left unattended for a rather peculiar reason. Such being that it was difficult to tend a garden when one was considered something of an interloper within it. A side-effect of territorial dispute the lepus had rather not anticipated.

Most, if not all, the animals had been assigned a place of residence within the garden based first and foremost on need, followed by preference. It was not quite as simple with the one called 'dragonoak'.. In such instance the animal had opted to choose his own residence, being lacking in particular wants or needs based on its own physiological nature. Indeed, the lepus was quite surprised to discover that Cendre's kind were adjacent to the floral types of beasts, rather than those based more on flesh and bone. More peculiar still was the dragonoak's stark contrast to the more typical style of his kin, seeming to lack much of the standard features of such breed.
Whether intentional design or anomalous mutation, the lepus had none the less opted to house the dragonoak close to the greenhouse. Such plans did not last, for within mere days the dragonoak had wandered much further south and remained there.

Attempts to usher it back failed, just as ones where he was coaxed to return. Whatever it was that the animal found comforting within the south copse of trees appeared to make it adamant of remaining there. In the same vein, those few others who might have wandered close to the new-found territory were quick to begin avoiding the area. Among them, even the lotine, whose watery nature should have given it little concern towards the dragonoak's penchant for flame.
In this the name was quite apt, for stranger a sight as a plant-based beast able to spout flames the lepus could not recall. Marvel or concern, he could take solace in knowing the dragonoak wasn't inclined to use it upon the nearby surroundings, thus limiting the fire hazard the area could otherwise suffer under. Perhaps all the better the copse or trees remained so close to the rocks.. As they offered some form of shielding from the rest of the garden.

Even so, the lepus discovered a new concern, which he remained unsure how to address. Should fire occur anywhere within the garden, there was precious little means to contain it. Perhaps if the lotine's aquatic nature included more broad abilities of controlling water, there would remain a chance, for the lepus knew the lotine had a sharper mind than most residence and could make such judgement calls far easier. Alas, there was no such hope as yet.
Another hope remained that if the dragonoak held ability to create flame it could also hold the key to controlling it, but observations of his behaviour didn't seem to support such theory. The usage of flame appeared to be to only deter, as last defence, rather than active use. And even in cases where it was utilized, the control was unrefined, making use of only short bursts in between longer pauses. While it made the risk of fire hazard feel diminished, the grander issue remained.

A solution for the fire hazard would have to be managed within time, though that wasn't why the lepus was drawn to the garden that day. There was work to be done within the two garden beddings south of the pond, where passage and work had been rather prevented for a length of time. The dragonoak was not by nature mean-spirited, as much the lepus could understand, but perhaps there was a nervousness of its surroundings and co-habitants that left it irate and insecure. As such, little wonder then that to pass along the path south of the pond, he'd seen black eyes study him from the nearby rocks on many an occasion, accompanied by a low hiss of warning.
To pass through meant the animal would gradually subside. To remain standing for a time longer would have brought the dragonoak more into the open, to address the challenger more directly. On that day, he would rather have to find the finest of line between both stages, to settle the beast's insecurity.

It is not the easiest to work upon the furrows, otherwise. A constant threat of an errant spout of flame, flung forth from an unknown corner of the rocks. And much more so when the lepus would have to return to the furrows many a time over, only to face such threat each time. It simply would not do, by means of practicality if not for manners.
The lepus' arrival did not provoke a reaction at first, though the more probable cause for such was merely his unexpected arrival. It was midday, with the sun high in the skies and many a beast and animal likely to enjoy a well-earned rest in the summer-like warmth. It could not have been said that the lepus had likewise been particularly quiet, as garden tools would have made minute enough sounds aplenty to cover for his otherwise calm and serene demeanour. The footfalls were certainly no stomping strides to come down the path from the tool shed.

As with all things living, the dragonoak would have had to slumber as well, whether it be in short quiet naps throughout the day or a longer slumber during the course of the night. The variance was quite extensive from animal to animal, most often depending upon the question of whether one was predator or prey. A further factor would have been the style of predator, as some hunted within the light of day while others preferred the twilight and darkness.
In truth, the lepus did not know. The plant-based beasts had little classification qualities that could easily be compared to those of other genuses. A dragonoak may have appeared both dragon and oak in the same turn, but it hardly existed as proof of either. Moreover it would had been a hard pressed matter to classify something which for many cultures existed merely as a means of myth and legend.

The beast in question was certainly no mere myth, nor legend, though his absence could have spoken towards creating such. An absence that was likewise relatively short lived.
Upon arriving to the crossroads the lepus paused to take measure of the surroundings, and a good thing as well. Previously unseen was a patch of darker stone of to one side, which awoke to liveliness within a few moments. It appeared the dragonoak had merely slept curled near the rocks, alerted at last to an approaching presence. His expression appeared irate while his motions were sluggish and gradual, as one who had only just awoken.
A preferable state to one who could be far more aggressive, though the timing of such remained quite unfortunate, as the dragonoak remained between the lepus and the furrows. He had rather hoped to have reach them first, to perhaps place him to the further from the dragonoak and work as the beast observed.

The dragonoak's irate nature is quick to increase in flare as he appears to consider the lepus too close for much comfort. A condition in which it would be rather poor to make one's acquaintance with, thus forcing the lepus to reevaluate prior plans. With calm intent he turned and began to walk down the path crossing the bridge, knowing the dragonoak was not likely to take offence to his departure over water. While the animal could certainly enjoy a spot of water, as all plants would, he was not, perhaps, too over fond of being surrounding by much of it.
Once across the lepus could more easily turn to his right and begin the journey back to the south of the pond from the greenhouse's direction, as it left the furrows much closer to his person. There was little concern that the dragonoak might move or change position, though even across the pond he could notice a certain degree of attention upon him.

Where the beast might have been simple of mind, he was certainly not simple of intent, as dark eyes followed the lepus approach from the right of the garden, as opposed to the prior approach from the left. As fortunes had it, the beast had remained where he had awoken, allowing the lepus easier access to the furrow fields towards the south of the path. A comfortable distance between their two locations to avoid an incident, yet close enough for one to observe the other within comfortable silence. As much had been his hope on the matter. What the fates would come to weave remained a vast unknown.
The lepus paused beside the furrows, which remained more similar to a patch of dirt than a bed for plants to come, for the winter snow had pressed most of the soil down upon itself. To allow plants the necessary nutrients and air it would have to have been upturned across the whole of the field.

The balmy nature of the summer had left the garden in a severe state of drought. The situation had become such, that there was a dire need to water it, which brought the lepus in attendance once more. It had been a longer winter than most, with large parts of the garden asleep or hibernating, and he had take such opportunity for in part a rest, and in part for research. The mystery of the winter flower continued to elude him in parts, though promising leads had enticed his attentions for some time. Long enough for the garden to re-awaken, thrive in the promising weather of the spring, and at last reach the scorched days of summer.
He had come to visit once or twice during the early months, to set things in order in preparation for the bloom, but had to admit quite an absent mind beyond that. An act which the lepus was quite intent on rectifying, in particular as this was the time it was needed the most. The morning had been spent checking upon the residents each in turn, to ensure they had endured the winter with no ill effects. For most this was indeed the case..
