However, there had been.. quite the surprises to find as well. On the outside the greenhouse looked no worse for wear. The only traitors to the disaster within were on the glass panes, as the lepus noted hazy lines of some tables askew, and dirt looking to have been thrown about. Once venturing in, the culprit had been quickly established - the kito, who had previously been assigned a planter pot for residence, appears to have growth. Rather a lot, in fact.
The lepus was quick to usher the snap-trapped plant outdoors, both for its own safety and that of any remaining greenhouse plants. The rest of the morning, then, had been spent on fixing the chaos within the greenhouse. Tables needed to be righted, some fixed. Planters lined up, some spared by a quick replanting, other far too long gone to be salvageable and thus reseeded. Throughout the process a growing concern - if the kito could become such, what else within the garden might have abjectly changed to such high degree during the winter? There was little reason to blame the kito for the mess, for he should have checked upon the situation much sooner and avoided the worst of it. Such, however, was hindsight.

With no means of finding comfortable space within the greenhouse, the kito's instinct looked to lead it to simply follow the lepus as he made his rounds. This was a fair turn of events, for he'd rather keep an eye on the plant-growth, being unfamiliar with what can come next. Would the simple nature of before change? Would new instincts emerge? There was opportunity for learning and research here, if the garden itself had not been in such dire straights from the weather.
The urgency of the concern paused any plants for watering, until all the denizens were visually accounted for, their status checked. By and large, they were not difficult to find, for more had been a sizeable height to begin with. The root-growth pachee were perhaps the most troublesome, for their fickle playful natures made them quite intent to hide as a means of play. By noon, the lepus felt quite assured that he had managed to account them all, however.
One of the few to remain was the serpent, whose nature was rooted in being elusive. Until he could visually confirm her status, the absence could have been due to any number of reasons, some simpler than others.

The grass, once quite overgrown, and looking to have done such again in the verdant days of spring, was yellowed and low to the ground. Much of the area beyond the fruit trees had been designated a wild growth, once the lepus had realized that the serpent preferred lack of presence and appreciated a sense of obscurity. Winter still culled the grass, making it brittle mulch for the regrowth the following year, but the visual of the area now looked quite dreary. On the whole, it would make locating the serpent perhaps a tad easier, for the field was not as tall as before.
It could also cause an issue, for the bent grass was not unlike a blanket covering much of the ground. If one did not take care where they stepped, one could find themselves treading upon the serpent herself, to unfortunate results. The lepus spent some time contemplating this, while the kito appeared to assume their journey went no further and simply situated itself near the rocks to observe. In times past, it would have been able to use its roots to obtain nutrients and moisture directly from the soil. That option was no longer available in its current state.

Where the greenhouse was humid, it was not entirely enough to sustain a plant of its size, and the kito was as likely to be thirsty as any other verdant-natured creature. To that effect, it looked to try to nip and eat what little lush greener surrounded it, perhaps in hopes it might contain more water. The unlikeness of this aside, perhaps there was wisdom in that simple thought.. One need not find the serpent, if the serpent were to come to them.
"Please, stay," the lepus held out a hand to the kito, in slim hope the simple mind could understand as much. To his fortune there was no need to test that theory, for whether because of command or mere interest in the grass being stronger, it stayed where it was. This allowed the lepus to assemble a wheelbarrow with metal canisters, to fill them at the somewhat reduced pond, and return to copse of trees within a shorter while. Given the attention and sound made thus far, the serpent was as likely to know they were here as anything else, though perhaps the sight of the kito kept it hidden.
To entice her out, the lepus filled a watering can from one of the canisters, and began to water the dry grass surrounding the trees and beyond.

Oh, blueberries! Nice. Just don't mix them up with those angry looking orange things.

A procedure that was anything but quick, for the watering can could only hold so much and the ground was dry and thirsty. Within even the first mere minutes the lepus presumed to have kicked up more dust than bring humidity to the area. What water touched, became a small cloud, while the damp quickly soaked into the ground. Perhaps in appearance of vain effort, though even a small drop would do good under such conditions. The different of this effort could mark whether much of the garden lived or died.
In spite of initial fears it appeared the serpent did not deign to make her appearance. The kito's presence was imposing, to be certain, and the serpent's nature was elusive. If territory was threatened the matter might have been quite different, as even the most reticent of natures could flare up in anger at such. A factor that had likely been given no light reprieve due to the nature of the weather.

It would have been incorrect to state the lepus found it a reprieve. The serpent wasn't the most amiable to interact with, and required a fair amount of caution and care. If she had sought to spend such says in recluse of the balmy weather, perhaps all the better for it. An irate mood would have merely made any attempts to quell her inevitable annoyance that much more challenging. This did not mean the lepus began to treat the bent grass with less of the respect he knew it deserved. A slumbering serpent was still a serpent, after all. And an unduly awoken one was perhaps most irritable of all.
With the first of the watering cans finished, he returned to the wheelbarrow in order to refill. In the interim of the work, the kito had seemed to find a place quite near to where it had been obligated to stay, yet slightly off to the side.

The reason was as simple as seeking shade, finding its own method for quiet slumber. This brought to the lepus' mind a notion he had rather forgotten. Namely that the kito, leastwise Èpiphanie with its namesake, were that of nocturnal nature. A poor thing, then, for him to have chased it out of the greenhouse so later in the morning, equivalent to leaving one outside the door at nightfall. A state that would hardly do, yet he could not think of a location that quite suited for its size and needs at such time.
To be sure, it would have to involve shade or some description. Perhaps even a fence, or other means of keeping the daytime wanderers at bay, thus avoiding accidentally or otherwise disturbing the kito. He did not assume it to have similar irritable nature as the serpent, but the size gave pause and instilled some concern.. Even non-violent natures could unintentionally cause harm.

The lepus finished pouring from the canister, raised his head and lifted the lip of the cap. Of the immediate surroundings, the copse was perhaps the most shade-filled. A nyssa occupied a patch of hedge not too far from them, though in its particular case the branches were ever barren, due to his timberot nature. The shed, again, much too small.. The pond quite open, and the other copse of fruit trees beyond it already occupied by the evergreen, who might object to frequent night time disturbance by a neighbour.
Perhaps, then, the greenhouse was one's best option, even though the space within was severely limited? Perhaps there was yet another option.. The lepus' gaze wandered further north, to a corner of the garden he had well designed with intent, yet had not found time to frequent in as many times as he would have preferred. A lone shed amid cut wood and timber, a sawmill within.

A rather frightful place for many a plant creature, though perhaps not so for the kito. It was a simpler mind, who might not connect the harm done to wood with potential harm done to one's self. And even if one discounted the shed itself, the surroundings contained fairly frequent sets of tree or bush underneath which it could slumber. Indeed, perhaps until a more permanent fixture could be found, this would be the best for the kito's temporary habitation.
As things were, the fruit trees seemed ever as pleasant to it as anything else, barely a leaf turned as it quietly napped. There was little rush on the matter of relocation, and considerably more in the dryness of the garden. The lepus hoisted the watering can once more, this time wandering over to the hedges and the smaller berry bushes, both appearing considerably more yellowed than they should have. With a tilt of the can, the soil began to eagerly drink up the moisture.

It was in wandering closer to the bushes near the taller grass that the lepus comes upon the site of a discovery. Just beneath the edge of one hedge there is a strange formation, a kind of berry tinted bright orange. The sight so strange that he didn't immediately come to recognise the shape as something in relation to the serpent. Such berries had been felt by her before, though none quite in this colouration. Perhaps the drought had greater effect on the creatures than he realized..
With care and attendance, he collected the berry and returned it to the wheelbarrow, to sit among the canisters there. The serpent had used these as gifts in prior encounters, and it stood to reason this one would have followed the same principle. While he had not caught sight of the serpent herself, it was a comforting notion that her presence could still be confirmed through the leaving of the berries.

The lepus proceeded to water the location of the berries a bit more extensively than initially planned. Should the serpent require it, she could now find moisture in exchange for the gift left. While much of the garden remained dry, the corner of tall grass, fruit tree and hedge was watered to the point of possibility. All too much could end up drowning smaller plants, becoming quite damaging to their roots and leaves. Whereas too little might hardly make a change against the balmy weather at all. As all things, there was a balance most delicate to reach.
Among the various tasks, the lepus made time to check upon the kito, to ensure it was still laid out beneath the trees and likewise in good spirits. Little had changed since the last he had done so, as the nocturnal one appeared quite content to sleep until further notice. Perhaps justly right, if one considered the dramatic morning behind them both.

Other tasks required checking upon the plants and trees themselves. The lepus had not feared damage or disease, for each one looked to be in good health beyond mere dryness. An attentive gardener would know not to take such chances, however, and a disease or damage prevented would have been greater than one allowed to suffer. The diligence of such notion was not without its share of rewards. Beneath one of the bushes the lepus was able to find a small bundle of blueberries, still quite ripe for eating.
The warm season, one which had come so early, had caused many bushes and trees to bloom sooner than expected. It was in part due to this that the lepus found himself behind on some gardening tasks, for the estimates on when they should have been started failed to match up to the unexpected seasonal nature of this summer. Thus, the struggle to catch up.

A struggle now made two-fold with the discovery of the kito's own rapid growth and change, thus prompting a quest for new residence and the cleaning of the greenhouse. No doubt it would have required minor repairs as well, to the tables left legless, if nothing else. The lepus could only thank the luck of stars that the kito had not manages to damage any of the glass panes, for replacing such would have been a much more complex task.
With the continuation of the cleaning and watering of the nearby area, the lepus happened upon even more produce left uncollected. A pair of carrots appeared to have been dug up yet left to the side of one furrow. Perhaps due to a passing fancy of a wandering resident, to whom they held little value. Those, too, were taken to the wheelbarrow, to settle within among the serpent's berries and blueberries.
