Ah, he was running late. The sun was low already, threatening the impending end of the daylight hours. A sigh escaped the mammalian as he looked upon his disheveled garden. The season was coming to its close, and he had hardly put any work in for the summer months. But.. Perhaps he could at least give Valii some attention before he called it a day. The lotine was idle in her pond, seeming to be at rest until her guardian made his presence noticed. The serpent-like plant perked up, rising up on her belly into a naga-like stance out of the water.
"Ah, good afternoon Val", Xentus greeted her warmly, "How have you fared these past days?" A clawed hand reached to pet along the top of her head, gently trailing along a blackened tendril. The lotine leaned into his touch, letting her tendril flow like hair in his hand.

Lotine were like.. Mermaids. The leopard kneeled there dazed for a moment, contemplating the myth and mystery of seafaring women.. Ah, but lotine were freshwater, weren't they? A distracted frown spread on the leopard's muzzle, prompting a head-tilt from the serpent. A hum escaped her, snapping the man back to reality. "Ah, apologies, Valii", he muttered, petting down a tendril again, "This one just thinks you a mermaid" She might not have understood his words, though she could tell there was something endearing in his tone. The frown faded and was replaced by a kind smile. "Say, wheres your flower?", the leopard asked, looking at the creature's head. Normally there would be a bud or blossom there. But there was none.. And he hadn't taken her for lola-growth in a while. "Come, Valii, out of the water", he asked of her, stepping back to give her room. There was something amiss.

Was she sick? His eyes trailed along her body, searching for any sign that she may be sick. The lotine's pelt was as vibrant as ever, a glossy rainbowed tone that he'd always been in awe of. Her fur felt its normal, slickened texture.. Then he looked into her eyes, holding up her jawline. Anyone passing by would've seen a fairly strange sight of a mammalian man appearing to lean in, seducing his prized garden centerpiece. Even Valii seemed bashful at the action at first, black eyes looking away shyly. A curious hum sounded from the man's throat as he let up and came to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong with her - at least not on the surface. Not sick, at least. A second overview on the lotine's body then revealed.. A misplaced black and white flower on her backside. Or seemingly misplaced. Was.. It supposed to be growing there?

He hadn't done much research into lotine, but he supposed that, like any other plant, there wasn't exactly a designated spot where flowers might grow. The head was of course the most visually appealing place, but the flower wasn't meant for visual appeal. Er.. Probably, anyway. Maybe it was, in order to attract proper caretakers or something of that ilk. But he didn't want to think too deeply on the reproduction or stimulation needs of the lotine right now. "This.. Doesn't bother Valii, does it?", he asked the serpent, knowing his words weren't of much consideration for the being. He kneeled back down and touched the area around the oddly sprouted flower, looking at the lotine's face for affirmation. She shyly glanced at her guardian, trying to understand what it was he was trying to say or ask.. And him touching around the flower was slightly uncomfortable, but only because she wasn't certain whether or not to like it.

She liked him. So this wasn't too bad, all things considered. He was nice and fed her fish and kept the pond clean and let her grow lola.. Thinking of which, it was past time for that event. He'd missed out on the flower blossoms before, letting it wither and die without fruit. But with him here, that meant they were off to that place with cozy water and strange people. The lotine assumed correctly, and before long, the pair were at the breeding center. The trip there was getting easier every time. Valii put up no fuss, and the pools were always available. Those which frequented this place were often here for orbaru or houluh or pachee.. Lotine seemed like a fairly rare species of choice for 'breeding'. Xentus enjoyed the moment of closeness between himself and Valii, and seeing the fruit it made. Last time he brought her here, she'd even produced two twinned fruit.

Hopefully, she'd come to make more. And better lola. Honestly, he wasn't sure what dictated the 'quality' of the produced fruited animals. Health? Size? Color? Color was the one he thought would be the most likely case. For those looking to collect, the rarer colors were of higher value, naturally. But.. Knowing both lola and lotine were beings of free will, it seemed cruel to judge them based on visual appeal. Xentus mulled on the thought while Valii made herself at home in the warm pool. It had been heated by the sun all day, and with sunset upon them, it was likely at its peak warmth. The lotine poked her head out of the surface of the water, eyes watching the man at the edge. His feet dangled into the water, swirling in slow circles. She could only wonder what he was thinking of. It hadn't gone beyond her notice that the man seemed often lost in thought.

More importantly, though - where was her fish? One of the best parts of coming to this place was the delicious rainbowed fish he gave her. It was a treat she only received on such an occasion as this, and she was definitely looking forward to it now. Maybe if she just stared hard enough.. The leopard seemed to work slowly through his thoughts, coming to the conclusion that the culture of the city was one he'd just not come to fully understand until he spent more time within it, participating in its customs. He wouldn't feel too guilty about giving up the lola he had collected thus far, especially if they were going to be treated well. They were simple creatures that made for good company in the garden. Kyo was a prime example. But he was content with only keeping the one. With that, Xentus finally came to the end of that train and glanced up.

Their eyes met. Xentus could tell there was something Valii wanted. There was such a longing look to her gaze. Then his thoughts came back to, taunting his mind with ideas of lotine attraction and if he was somehow at the center of her desires. A physical shake of the head warded that one away. He was her guardian, she was his ward. That was what he reminded himself of every time it came to the creatures of higher thought. It was such a touchy subject in his mind. Beasts who could come to have thought and will as he could were not beasts. But they were not people. Were they? A sigh and another shake helped him past the deep thoughts. Right, Valii probably just wanted her special meal. The leopard rifled through his pack to find food. Fish for her, curry for himself. He hadn't had much to eat today, and sharing a meal sounded lovely.

"Here you go, Val. Sorry, Xentus knows you've been waiting, hm?", he said as he offered the rainbow colored fish out for the lotine. Her paws reached out of the water to nab her meal, then her entire form dipped down below the surface. For a moment, she considered coiling up at the bottom to enjoy, but it seemed the man was having food too. Perhaps he would share? Whatever it was, it probably wasn't as good as fish. But she was curious. After a moment of contemplation, the serpent breached the water with fish in mouth, resting her head on the man's lap. Xentus chuckled to hide his sadness. He wasn't exactly looking to get his pants wet, but it was too late for that now. "What is it, Val?", he asked, "The fish is good, Xentus hopes". He knew he'd get no answer, but talking to her was still fulfilling.

There were a few bitemarks in the fish already, and even as the lotine rested her head on his lap, she was still chewing on it. Meanwhile, he hardly had a bite of his own food. Hey eyes stared hard at him, glancing between his eyes and his lunch tin.. Making it as obvious as she could. After a moment, the man seemed to get the idea. "Ah.. Want some? This one isn't sure you'll like this, Valii. But you are welcomed to try, he supposes", he said as he picked out a chunk of chicken covered in curry and held it down before the serpent. She sniffed at it, dropped her fish, then lurched forward to mouth the offering and the fingers holding it. Her teeth didn't bare down, thankfully. Xentus was slightly taken aback still; the lotine was staring at him again.. He withdrew his fingers and did his best to not look too much into the act. "Valii.. What is this one to do with you?", he asked with a chuckle.
