Now, it was time to fly. Silver and Nyx didn't have that much practice flying, but they believed in her. All they had to do was go straight up, and right back down again. Should be easy.
Silver pulled a toy out of their bag - a bat on a string, tied to a long stick. It was a fun little thing they thought might add to the atmosphere of the display. They held it up above her head and said, "Up, Nyx, fly! Just like the bat!"
Now Nyx could see the bat, and she didn't understand what they were saying, really, but she did understand the signal to fly. It felt weird doing it when there were so many others around, but she trusted them. She stretched out her huge bony wings and flapped them, slowly at first and increasing in speed until she was off the ground.
"Up, Nyx, higher!" they called. She flew up and over the crowd, and Silver danced their bat on the string the whole time, as if it were participating in the stunt as well.

Silver didn't have as much control as they would have liked when it came to flying with Nyx, but they did managed to make their way back to the ground without crashing into anything. Great. Now on to the finale.
Silver dropped the bat stick to the side and swiftly replaced it in their hands with an indigo lantern. The eerie blue flame bathed them in unusual light, giving their lightly colored fur an unusual blue sheen.
They held up the lantern over Nyx so that it framed her gaunt face. It reminded them of how people told ghost stories by the fire, except instead of a warm glow on a friendly face, it was a cool glow upon her creepy skeletal frame. They used the string of the lantern to hang it from her horn and dangle in front of her face, which didn't bother her much, since she couldn't see it.
"Now, do not be afraid," Silver said. The way they said it suggested that people might, in fact, become afraid. "Nyx here has complete control over the shadows. Let us show you..."

"Nyx," Silver whispered to her again. "Eclipse."
This was the moment they had been training for. Starting at her horn, a shadow erupted, soon consuming her in darkness. The darkness spilled over the lantern, making it impossible to see, and soon enough it covered both Nyx and Silver in its cold shadowy grasp. For just a moment, the whole crowd couldn't see anything but an inky black puddle where the show ring used to be.
"Alright pretty girl, we're done now. Good job," Silver said.
Slowly the darkness faded away and was pushed back again by the light. Silver had grabbed the lantern in the meantime and held it above Nyx's head, so that she was framed by the blue light when she could be seen again.
"Thank you, Nyx, for not trapping us all in the darkness," Silver said. While they knew she wouldn't do that, they hoped the crowd would think she could. It was more dramatic that way.

After that stint in the show ring for the freak show with Nightshade, there was nothing Noa wanted to do more than to go back home and work on some of his research. Unfortunately, he still had another contest to get through, this time with Rhys. The good thing about this was that he didn't have to be involved for too much of it. Like the last contest they'd been in, for this one Rhys had come up with the routine himself. Noa was essentially here as a glorified chaperone, but honestly he preferred that to being too involved. "Are you ready?" he said to Rhys. The Faeron was checking all their props one last time. Well, it was his show, Noa supposed, so he tried to quell his impatience as best he could. {Almost! Ah, I'm so nervous!} Noa could still hear the sound of Rhys shuffling around behind him.

"Well, you better be quick. We're almost on," Noa said.
{Okay, okay, I think I'm ready!} said Rhys. Noa glanced at him, then gave the cue to the staff to begin the set-up for their routine.
Rhys didn't immediately appear in the ring. Instead, the lights turned off, and a gentle melody drifted out into the air. They could have gotten a recording for this, but Rhys had wanted to do as much of the effects himself as he could, so here they were.
The melody then took a somber turn. Then came the rattling of cages, and when the lights went up, two crows flew out from backstage in a flurry of feathers, cawing their alarm at being jostled from their perches by Rhys fumbling their cages, probably.
Well, at least they'd flown.
At the center of the stage was something that hadn't been there when the lights first went off.

It was... some sort of entity, with a purplish visage twisted into a grimace of horror, wearing a hat and cloak. Or at least that was what it looked like, anyway. In reality it was Rhys holding up a bunch of different objects with his telekinesis, with himself covered by the folds of the cloak.
A terrible shriek went up: more of Rhys's handiwork. And then his voice began to fill the minds of the gathered audience.
{Well, well, well,} said Rhys, {what have we here? You're all here for the Vai Min Mur celebrations, is that it?} The 'witch' -- that was what Rhys had called it during their rehearsals -- waved its staff, and illusory ghosts and skeletons came walking out from backstage one by one, until they formed a parading perimeter around the edge of the ring. It was an impressive illusion; it likely took a lot of concentration to maintain all that at once.

{Have you all been good boys and girls? I suppose you should have a treat then!} The skeletons and ghasts burst into an illusory shower of purple and orange confetti, and candy flew out from under the witch's cloak and into the crowd. Then the whole 'costume' fell away as Rhys dropped the items he'd been holding up, and he fluttered up with just the hat still on him -- though he had to hold this up with his tendrils, since it was much too big for his actual head.
{Just kidding! I hope no one was too spooked! Enjoy the show, everyone!} He swept the hat off his head with a flourish, dipping in the air slightly in a semblance of a bow. Then the lights went down again, and he collected all his props before zipping off stage.
{Did you see it? I did it!} said Rhys. It hadn't been a very long routine, but he had seemed pretty satisfied with himself.
"Not bad," Noa said.
(Rhys demonstrates Drop, Hold and Fly; all three candies are used; end)

This contest wasn't nearly as full of monsters as the freak show since the rings were back to back, and Kristofor knew he was late. He was late and being unable to find his mask DID. NOT. HELP. Thank you not, hellion cat. Mira grips onto his fluffy neck fur as he skids into the show hall, shrugging on the bangled vest he wore for last years masquerade ball that happened after the mage's halloween party. This contest wanted the spooky and the chilling to boost the spirit of the dark and the cold of the season. About a month or two too early friends. Regardless, the dark fox pauses, catching his breath and trying to not act like he just sprinted here. Wheek? Fox ok? Reaching up, Kristofor pats gently on Mira's foot that he can reach. He's fine. Is she ready? Chitter. She's ready. This place is familiar. But her face feels itchy from the fake eyebrows that rest on her brow. It makes her look more comedic then anything else. As they step out onto the stage. [Mira wears the enileaf costume, Kristofor wears the anubis mask]

"Hello, my good audience. We are here to amaze and astound you. This is the incredible, the mystical, the spooky, Mira the panilla." Sell it, and sell it well. Most creatures or people will believe you if you sell your point well enough. His vest bangles clink as the fox does arm movements, letting the panilla crawl down his arm to rest on his forearm before letting her hop onto a pedestal. "On this eve of Vai Min Mur, we're on our way to a party. But I'm afraid I forgot a present for the host. Mira, can you get my gift for me? I'll trade you." he asks the panilla. She chirps a positive note before heading down his body into his satchel. There's shuffling noises before he can feel the weight against his spine lighten and she comes up to him, clutching a red and gray bunting plush about as wide as she is. "Good girl. Trade you." he offers her a piece of dried bamboo, and gets the bird plush. "Our host loves birds, even birds that aren't real. But I dont' think this is 'spooky' enough, do you?" [Mira reacts to her name, uses hold and drop to retrieve and trade the bunting plush]

"If I can ask the lights to be dimmed..." the fox asks the surrounding. Slowly the lights dim until only darkvision creatures can see grays. "Do not worry folks... as you can hear, Mira is not afraid of the dark anymore. She is most active in the dead of night, and can see everything, better then even myself, and I'm a fox. Night is my time." He walks over to the edge of the stage after letting the clatter of little claws touch the floor. He lets her stand her by herself for about a minute... "The hour is drawing late, and the MIST is rolling in off the river." he alters the tone of his common accent just a bit, as he can hear a quiet whoosh of nearly invisible mist opens up. "The moon rises above the stage and we need to get to our party soon before it ends." Only one light, as requested, slowly brightens till you can see somewhat. [Mira shows her acceptance of darkness, her nightvision as Kristofor walks away and hidden mist]

Kristofor places the bunting plushie on the abandoned pedestal. "We should have brought more then one bird for our gracious host. Mira, we should surprise our host with many birds." A chittering wheek before the air around the bird shimmers and he holds up his hand, with a slightly smaller plush appearing in his hand. Her illusions aren't perfect, and he's seen them in action to distract when the dogs and the tailypo get into spats. But it is flatter then a plush could be. "Two is good Mira. These will be really good plushies for our guest. Let's get you ready for the party." The bird plush's beak opens up and trills like a panilla does as she scrambles up to his shoulder then down to sit next to the plush. The lights brighten a bit to show the fox and his fancy vest and the panilla with very long eyebrows. He shifts the satchel around and pulls out the sakura grooming kit he earned from his previous time here. "Hold still Mira, we need to make you look nice for the party." She chirps and arches her back for the brush to run lightly along her thick and fluffy fur several times. "We should take off those eyebrows and put them back, right? Too low?" He asks her. Wheek! Mira scratches at the items before he grasps the item and pulls lightly. She meeps as the item pulls a few hairs out of her fur but has no full effect. "She's able to escape being held with only leaving a handful of fur just in case the host wants to hug her too much. Really likes plushies, and this isn't the first time." Finally they walk along the misty terrain of the stage until he comes to a small table with a toy teaset and some paper plates set out. He asked someone to do a fake picnic, and a third plush, with no eyes, sits on the bench. He sets down the original, and the other plush slides off his hand like slime to sit on the bench too. "We are going to enjoy our midnight party now. Thank you for joining our journey here through the mist." he bows, Mira waves her tail before enjoying some bamboo and the mist dissipates as the lights come back on. [Mira demonstrates illusion using the bunting plushie, her tolerance of being groomed with the sakura grooming kit, loosen fur with the removal and shifting of the costume] +1 Mira done
