Not quite ever job posted to the quest board turned out to be exactly what was advertised. Whether it was having to go to attend a party only to be attacked by some undead beast, or returning a lost item only to discover the 'thief' happened to be a gigantic ancient nyssa. So this could reasonably make for a sense of suspicion and caution whenever a new one is posted, a sense to expect the unexpected..
And yet, the job which the sphinx and harachiu responded to could not have been further from the ad.. The initial invite appeared innocent enough, to come and help make toys, something the sphinx in particular was looking forward to. In the recent years she'd rather had to set aside some of her artisan pursuits, so it would have been nice to work on something once more.
Meanwhile, Noari was curious to see these 'toys' and what they involved, especially since they happened to be one of the few things actually on his scale.

Having rode along for a few shopping trips at the market, he'd seen the various puppets and dolls being sold there, along with even odder contraptions or figurines depicting a great number of beasts and people. With the world usually being so much larger in scale to him, there was a sense of familiarity in standing next to a figure that matched your own height and some of your likeness, even if it was lifeless at that.
Fhèr, while interested, was also a bit too much of a fire-bug to allow into close proximity to that much wood.. So the sphinx had promised to make it up to her another time, and allowed Noari to tag along instead.
Along the way to the workshop, the hara kept pointedly gesturing to various shapes and things on their path, as if to ask whether something like that could also be made into a toy.

The answer was often the same, either a "Yes, for sure" or "Maybe not with quite so many details, but I don't see why not." making for a light-hearted conversation that lasted them all the way to the workshop.
The signs of trouble were early enough that they hadn't even reached the workshop proper, before something felt amiss. For one, there was a sudden scent in the air, oddly acrid and misplaced. The sphinx was quickly able to recognize as something burning, specifically some type of wood. Looking across the road to the workshop building in the distance, faint plumes of smoke were visible, though while most of them came from various chimneys, there was also a few that seemed to have a more random point of origin.
A part of her flashed back to the various experiments Fhèr kept doing with fire, and at how she specifically had chosen Noari to prevent this exact same scenario.

Another part of her assured that this could also be projection, that everything is fine, and she's merely over-thinking it. It was largely due to that, that the mammalian didn't end up running up to the workshop, although she did involuntarily pick up the pace a little. On her should, the hara briefly tapped her cheek, giving a questioning looks of whether she was alright.
"I'm not sure.." she admitted, "Something doesn't feel right."
It was only moments after they had reached the workshop's front that these suspicions were proven true after all, with the door suddenly slamming open as a frantic man slipped through and pushed it closed behind him. Parts of the man's outfit were actually on fire, though he didn't seem to notice until the door was properly shut, after which he quickly patted it out.
"Hey, is everything alright?" the sphinx ran up, trying to assist in the patting, though even to her confused mind the question seemed rather irrelevant.

The man's eyes grew wide in noticing her, more as if a lifeline was suddenly granted than fear, and he smiled, "Oh, great! You're just in time." He whirled on her and the hara, grabbing her shoulders, "You gotta help me out, it's crazy in there! Something went wrong, I don't know what, but the magic got loose and it's affecting everything!"
The sphinx was about to raise a finger, opening her mouth to ask 'loose how', but the man continued, unphased by any form of social conventions, "There's an emergency stop at the back of the workshop, big red button, you can't miss it. Just give it a good thump, and it'll shut the whole thing down!"
Eventually, his expression did soften when he realized she's been staring at him for a few seconds now, letting go of her shoulders, "I'm afraid I can't quite.. get through." A hand taps a forlorn flame out on his own shoulders, "Not from want of trying.. Can you help?"

Of course, her immediate reflex was to agree, but between the man's slightly battered state and clear fire hazard to his person on top of that, she glanced to the hara in concern for a moment, before looking back to him, "I can try, but you'll need to keep Noari safe out here in the meantime."
A sudden and loud protesting grunt sounded from her shoulder, as the hara rose to his feet, frowning deeply in disagreement.
"It's not safe in there, Noari.." Darky turned to him, doing her best to explain calmly. "It's not something you've encountered yet, and I don't want to see you injured."
But the hara remained resolute, crossing his arms as if to say that whether she wanted to or not, he would be coming along. And, as if to add weight to the gesture and argue her concerns, he made the motion for lighting matches, pointing to his own hair, where a small singed patch was still waiting to grow out.

Fhèr never intended to hurt anyone, but unfortunately her mind state often meant that she also wasn't particularly aware of the general radius of collateral for the antics she pulled. And with Noari being the most commonly closest presence, he more often than not ended up being part of said collateral, whether having to pull her out of the consequences or extinguishing stray flames from his hair.
As the sphinx recollected the meaning behind his gesture, her face hardened with resignation - he made a fair point. She still didn't like it, but could hardly argue against it, either.
"..Fine, you can help. But if there's any scrapping to be had, no fighting." She added, empathizing the importance of that last part. "You have one job and one job only, and that's to reach the red button and hit it. Leave anything else to me, alright?"
The hara's wings fluttered as a confident smile crossed Noari's face, nodding his head.

Slowly the door to the workshop was pried open and the two snuck in, while the man behind them whispered them luck. The whispering was largely unnecessary, seeing the ruckus of the workshop was loud enough to drown out most noises - the machines whirling, pounding, clanging, various conveyor belts screeching to a halt or rumbling along.. And a multitude of various object, fully animated, running to and from, climbing up and down, hanging from ledges and shelves, even going so far as trying to break some of the devices..
Truly, the whole of the giant room was one large chaotic mess which she could hardly make sense of which was what. But they needed to keep an eye on the prize - The button.
She looked to Noari, "Back of the workshop. Keep close, I'll try to clear a path."
The two stepped ahead, the hara fluttering nearby. Many of the nearby toys were quick to scatter in response.. except one. A small humanoid toy, only slightly larger than Noari himself, suddenly clanged a thin wooden stick against a flat block of wood it had in the other hand, screeched a timbery sound.. and charged them.
Instinctively, the sphinx grabbed for the nearest weapon she could, which turned out to be a short wooden toy sword, and swung at the toy in deterrent. While she hadn't intended to actually damage it, the toy itself was shockingly spry in its motions, quick to bring up the shield and deflect the blow, while diving under it to stab at her feet.

In reflex the sphinx quickly turned the blade flat-wise and tried to deflect the toy's oncoming approach. The toy sword managed to glance away the worst of the stab, but her reaction was certainly more in mild panic at this.. rather bizarre and unexpected situation, than any trained move she'd normally make.
The toothpick tabbed into her calf, and the sphinx gave a short startled yelp, jumping back and bouncing around on one foot for a second. Immediately, the hara spun around concern washing across his face, but the sphinx made quick hand motions through that grimace of discomfort, "Go! Go! I got this."
Placing the foot down, the sphinx steadier her stance and took a proper swing at the toy, far more in line with the usual form of training. Though the small wooden shield came up to block, the blade moved through the air and adjusted its course at the very last minute, managing to duck over it.
There was contact, a smacking sound, and a clatter of wooden toy pieces flung through the workshop's air.

The sphinx let loose a calming exhale, as the toys further scattered out around them, and everything looked to be about as clear as it would get. The hara fluttered forwards, ducking under the various loose cabling, pieces of unravelled yarn and strings, and overhanging conveyors, when suddenly something cut through the air just in front of it and there was a surprised meep.
The puppet had been too far away on its fall to pose a real threat to Noari, though it landed and quickly honed in on the errant hara in the air, slamming its own toothpick against a small wooden shield. As the sphinx's head turned towards the noise, more clanking sounded to the side as the toy crowd produced one more puppet, both looking to intercept the hara.
"Hang on, Noari!" Darky called and rushed close in a couple of steps, the toy sword swung at the first of the puppets. Though it tried, the dodging wasn't quite so deft, but unlike it's previous fellow, it remained standing, raggedy as it was. In quick succession there was suddenly two toothpicks coming at her, and the sphinx had to side-step and deflect with the sword both in turn.

Even so, the jabs were quick enough to get through the defence a little, nicking at her calves and shins in shallow stabs. Not enough to really cause severe damage, but enough to be quite annoying (and arguably the fact they only ran so skin-deep was much more hurtful than a larger wound, as the shock wasn't going to set in).
In the air, Noari fluttered back towards her, to keep more to her back in case more of the toys came flying out, though his hands itches and his face was frowning. He wanted to help, but the orders had been explicit, so he would hold back.. for now.
Meanwhile the mammalian turned on the first of the two toys and swung the sword downward in a more of a flourish, getting beneath that wooden plate of a shield. As the sword connected, what remaining magic kept the ragged toy animated was overwhelmed, causing piece of it to scatter across the workshop floor.
A twist of the wrist and the same motion swung around to deflect the second toy's strike, though the tip of the toothpick still managed to nick a toe along the way.

"Gah," she complained, hopping back a moment, as the toe throbbed that same way as if she had stubbed it against a sharper rock. It was strange, that she had been nearly eaten twice now by two whole beasts, with jaws the size of her own head, and survived only by the grace of the armour.. but the numbness that set in after those black-out flashes of initial pain seemed almost a welcoming reprieve to the minor little cuts and stabs of these toys.. Though, admittedly, said black-out flashes of pain only had numbness for a time. The REAL pain was in the hours after, so in that sense, a little pain now was perhaps better than a whole lot saved up for later.
Annoyed, the sphinx angled the sword again, coming at the toy just as it was about to block, but managing to be just that bit more faster, as the sword crunched through the soft balsa wood frame and left it broken and upcoming in its wake.
Seeing it remain there, she peeked over her shoulders at Noari, "Quickly, lets go before more show up."

All around them the cacophony of noise continued, as the furthest toys continued their magic-induced recklessness towards anything even machine adjacent, while the nearest ones parted like a wave of mice being caught in a miller's stores (largely because the wave didn't take long to crash back together in their wake). It made navigating by sound that much more difficult and the wooden click-clack of approaching feet wasn't noticeable until suddenly one stick figure turned around a corner from a machine, spotted them, and cheerfully clapped the toothpick against its shield.
"Hold up!" the sphinx said, as both she and the hara stopped, their path blocked. Darky quickly glanced to Noari with a nod, "Keep clear and keep your eyes open, there might be more." before taking a few steps forwards to thrust the sword towards the toy.
It moved, the wooden plate shifted to block it, and in place of solid contact, the sphinx felt the sword skip over and past the shield, as it was deflected. The force of it was still enough to rattle the toy's frame, but it didn't stop it from suddenly lunging forwards, toothpick out, before she could even bring the sword around to block. Suddenly, there was a MUCH sharper pain in her foot as the toothpick dug deep and out again, the toy bouncing backwards.
As she spun, there was a sudden whistle from the hara, that none the less came a little too late - Another puppet had jumped out of the toy crowd on the edges and rushed her.

A second stab went through her heel, and though minor enough as to need a bandage at best, it nearly prompted a curse from the mammalian, as she jumped up and backwards, doing a one-legged bounce once more. It was a bit too optimistic for them to assume there wouldn't be any more of these, since the workshop operated on a line, after all. For all she knew, there could have been whole crates of these things, just itching for a scuffle around the corner.
But they can't keep fighting all of them one by one. Elsewise they'll never reach the button. "Go! Keep going! I'll keep them busy," the sphinx waved at the hara to continue, "And watch out for above!"
Noari fidgeted in place, seeing the two toys circling once more.. but if the button was what ended this, then so be it. With a flutter of his wings, he turned and sped away down the alley of conveyors and machines.
In the meantime, the sphinx swung the sword at the most recent offender and sent it scattering, nearly jumping out of the way of the other one with a last minute deflection that only managed to nick at her tail.

As she spun around, she watched the hara speed towards the back of the workshop.. but also managed to spot a distinct looking toothpick sticking out from the crowd of toys not a long away from him.
Alright.. alright.. So the initial plan wasn't quite working out, but she had room to improvise. The mammalian leapt from the floor onto one of the conveyors, clanging the swords against some of the hanging bells from the conveyors above. Both her previously engaged toy and the one ahead of Noari seemed to hone in on the particular noise, and to her satisfaction she could see latter one turn and start to run towards her. Good, good.. Be the centre of attention, make them blind to anything else.
This might actually work.
Meanwhile, the first toy had already climbed the conveyor after her, so she swung backhand towards it, but only largely managed to hit the shield. While the attack wasn't much, the sword did come around that much quicker to block the incoming toothpick blow instead, even allowing her to spin around and catch the newly joined toy in the blocking fray.
