Briar had thought that he was past being taught lessons about complacency, but evidently that wasn't the case. His trips to the trader's had been so uneventful for so long that he had grown comfortable with them. Of course that would be when Noa sent him for something other than a crystal -- or rather, in addition to one.
If it had been some other inanimate object, he wouldn't have had any objections. Unfortunately, it was a living creature. Briar didn't know what Noa wanted with it, but he doubted it was anything good. But of course Noa could simply wave that phylactery of his at Briar if Briar didn't comply.
It was with his ears down and a heavy expression that Briar presented his offerings to the trader this time, before handing over a paper slip with a request for what he wanted in return. The things he'd brought to trade for the creature were fish too, though he suspected these fish would see a more merciful end than the creature he was bringing back with him.

The paper was quickly flicked to the side and suddenly a crystal and the end of a leash were there instead, the strange animal seemed to realize it was to stay with the leash, and it stared across expectantly. The trade was complete.
