It had been a forever and then some days since the mammalian last frequented the Pit. Admittedly it had been a forever and some days since she'd done a lot of things, for a multitude of reasons.. but someone had said that the best way to brush off the dust was to jump right back in. Said someone might not have meant it quite so literally, as the mammalian emerged from the tunnels of the Pit to a platform overlooking what was essentially a giant pool with various floating platforms. Spirits on high.. some sights never really change, and yet there was a sense of welcoming familiarity to this one.
Just beside her, the blue-green tat-lung was fully kitted and fidgeting nervously, glancing down into the arena. I heard this one was even bigger than the others.
Yeah, Darky admitted, not without her own concerns, I heard that too. But you've done a lot of hard work in the past, so it's the perfect opportunity to test and see how things go. A proper trial, so to speak. She smiled at him encouragingly, which would have been easier to do if she also wasn't having her own doubts. There was still that odd thorn at the back of the mind that wondered if perhaps they were biting off a bit TOO much this time..
Dispelling the thought, the sphinx motioned for him to go, Get ready, I expect the pliathor's already waiting in the arena, somewhere. And don't worry, I'll still be up here to back you up.
With one last nervous look, the tat-lung nodded, before taking off from the platform and snaking his way down towards one of the floating ones. Once landed, the eyes scanned the waterline, waiting for that inevitable call for battle to commence.
Once more into the fray, indeed.

A ripple in the water appeared before a massive head began to crest. The Pliathor narrowed every eye and a snort escaped her as she spotted the intruder.

As the pliathor's head crested the water, the sphinx's hands gripped the railing a bit tighter. It wasn't just 'a bit' bigger.. it was a lot bigger, almost looking to dwarf the tat-lung balancing himself on the floating platform. In many ways Detritus didn't really need to stay on the platform, given the tat-lung were creatures of all three terrains - land, water and sky - but time was precious in these few fleeting moments, before the inevitable charge of the sea serpent in the water.
Well, speaking of that..
"Det, charge!" the sphinx called from the trainer's stand.
This wasn't going to be some trumpet-accompanied run down at the serpent, despite the word used for the command. Instead, the tat-lung focused within, the ever-present subtle sense of static at the back of his mind (and his body as a whole) focusing and building, higher and higher. What nervousness was present gets gradually swallowed in that sweet (terrible) white noise, as the tat-lung's eyes glow a pale blue, the mane on his back dancing on invisible currents on the air..
And the skies grow suddenly a lot darker.

Squirt lashed her tail, multiple eyes narrowing at the thing ahead of her. Twisting her body around, she lashed out for the Tat-lung!

It was a strange thing, that static. The sphinx could always feel it through their mental connection, though she didn't always understand it. At the same time there's both an unbridled buzzing of restless chaotic energy, and also a kind of sharpened focus that so rarely gives the tat-lung something close to a calmed mind. To be sure, it was a double-edged sword rather than entirely a strength - that static could bite back as much as it could deliver.
For now, the sphinx placed her hands on the railing of the stands, and her feet firmly planted on the ground, as the skies above darkened considerably, a not-so-distant rumbling becoming audible. Down below, the white-glowing eyes flicked to the side, spotting the incoming tail as it cut through the water, and Detritus had enough opportunity to quickly leap up in a spiraled jump, let it pass beneath, and land back down on the platform in easy form.
"Here goes nothing," the sphinx breathed in, muttering to herself, before calling out, "Det, chiabirel!"
As the tail retreated away from him, the static around his body began to dance more wildly, sparks emitting off arcing points of suffused energy. The skies rumbled one final time, before there was a split-second moment of absolute silence, the very air cut with a thin line of vacuum and ozone.
And a line of plasma quickly filling the channel to flash down at the sea serpent below.
