It looked like Emery was first this time. Not always a good thing. It was nice to make a good first impression, but it also meant that chances are her own performance would be long forgotten by the time the judges got through the final entrants. If she couldn't offer them something different and memorable, then they wouldn't be placing well in the end. Luckily, she had spent quite some time training Argos. For now, she dragged a mine cart out into the center of the stage and addressed the audience. Her cadence left something to be desired as she began her pitch, but at least her volume was audible. "Ladies and gentlemen. Like many others, I try my luck by hunting for gems in the mines. It is difficult, time consuming work, so like many others, I have trained an assistant." The audience murmured- what did this have to do with flying?

She pushed the mine cart in front of her and knocked on it twice. Argos twitched inside- the signal to begin had been set. "Argos, leap!" She commanded, and he burst from the minecart, flinging the lid open and leaping into the air, spreading his wings wide. His glowing runes were quick to catch the audience's attention, and they murmured with fascination at the strange creature before them. He landed easily, his wings acting as a parachute to catch the air and make the landing much more graceful than one would expect for a creature his size. "Argos is a runic gargoyle. They are very intelligent, but most interestingly- capable of flight." She said, and snapped her fingers. "Argos, fly!" She ordered, and he began to flap his wings, slowly but surely rising into the air. It was a laborious task to him, but certainly doable. Emery approached the audience.

"Argos, follow." She muttered to her pet, and he flapped after her. She walked along the edge of the ring, allowing Argos to soar over the crowd as she did so, giving them an even closer look at him. "Behold, despite being made of rock and stone, he defies gravity to the greatest degree. There is a reason for the cave dweller having such a skill of course- it gives him even better opportunity to search for gems." She retreated to the center of the stage and beckoned Argos back over to her. "Argos, come here." She said, pointing at the floor in front of her. The gargoyle swooped over and landed in front of her dutifully, right on the point she indicated. Emery held up a flashlight to the audience. "He can assist me in mining- by using this." She said, and clicked it on. "Argos, hold." She said, and handed it to him.

Then, she ordered him to take to the skies once more... or as close to the skies as he could get in the indoor arena. In preparation for the contest, she had scattered dozens of stones around the arena and mixed in with them were a few precious rocks. "Argos, search for gems!" She called as he flew around, and then she took to meandering her way around the stage. For a few moments, it didn't look like he was doing much of anything- the flashlight's beam meandered around aimlessly like a spotlight before the show began. But then, it focused on a single point, the source of the beam rotating slowly as he flew in a circle, but the end of the light pointing straight at an object on the ground. Emery walked over and sure enough- it was a moonstone, which she was quick to show off for the crowd.
(Emery uses the moonstone, Argos uses Search, and Get (Gems) (the latter used to define what it is he's searching for) )

They went around like that for a few more minutes, with Argos pointing out several gems for Emery to pick up and take with her. Some he even swooped down and picked up himself, bringing them over to her to press into her hand before swooping off again. Finally, the gems had all been collected, a glittering pile returned to her bag. She held it up to the audience. "However, I'm still missing one last thing." She said, holding out her other hand and opening it wide, palm up. "Argos, drop!" She said, and he released the flashlight- which landed right in her hand. She clicked it off as the audience cheered. Emery couldn't help but feel relieved- everything had gone off without a hitch, and with any luck the creativity of her performance would make up for any lack of fancier training on Argos's part. All she could do now was take him off stage again.
(Argos uses Drop.) (Done!)

Quintessence had exactly two modes of being - chaos incarnate and complete apathy. A bit like a kitten who had just figured out how its legs worked. Therefore, it seemed like a terrible idea to feature him in a contest. For anyone else, it very well might be, but Silver knew Quin well enough to believe he could pull it off. After all, it was just one show. "Quin," Silver said. The Paogon perked up, staring at them intensely. "All you gotta do is what we practiced, okay?" "Okay," Quin confirmed. Silver grinned, knowing that he didn't realize just how cute that was. Silver stepped out onto the stage, but Quin was reluctant to follow. Eventually, they managed to coax him along. Usually, he was asked to stay back stage, so this was all very exciting for him. He would finally get to see what was out there! 'Out there' included a spotlight which startled him into covering his face with his wing, not that that helped at all. [158.75, 29.4]

Silver gave Quin to fly up into the air as they said the next bit. "Today I would like to show you an exotic creature from the wilds, a Paogon named Quintessence!"
Quin began their ascent just in time for Silver to finish their statement and let out a little wisp of cold blue flame they had found in the old mansion. Chasing things was one of Quin's very favorite activities, and he eagerly darted after the mote. Given how much faster he was, he could easily keep track of the mote and its unpredictable movements. He swirled around it, diving around it and switching places with it effortlessly as he flew, showing off his aerial agility.
When it looked like Quin was getting a bit far, Silver whistled, calling him back. He turned around with a dramatic flip and headed back to where he was started. His eyes were focused on Silver, scanning for the next trick they had planned.

The way he moved made it look almost like he was a part of the wind itself, carefully pushing the air around and riding on it effortlessly as if he were made of nothing at all.
Just as Quin was expecting, Silver had a large white flower in their hands. As he approached, they tossed it into the air. He adjusted his speed and flicked his wings at it, sending a bolt of wind hurtling through the air. It cut through the flower, exploding it into a flurry of petals raining down like snow.
Quin sped up so that he could fly through the petals, letting each one fall through him. The bright white petals appeared to shimmer and gleam as they passed through his ethereal wings. With another subtle flick of his wings, he managed to scatter them all again, causing some to fall to the ground more quickly while others shot straight back up. He was both real and not, all at the same time. An illusion that could somehow have an effect on the real world.

"You're so good at flying, Quin!" Silver said cheerfully as Quin came in to land on their shoulder. "Do you think you could show my little friend how to fly, too?"
They carefully set a floppy plush toy of a Faeron on a tall stool in the centre of the stage. "Alright, Quin, you need to tell him to fly. Fly, fly!"
"Fff-ry, fry!" Quin mimicked cheerfully. Silver could hear someone giggle in the crowd and it made them smile, too. It wouldn't be showing off Quin without a little humor.
"Fly, fly!" they said again, and once more Quin repeated it in turn. Except this time, Quin flew over the toy, flapping his wings to stir up wind and mixing in a dose of his own magic. The toy slowly started to wobble on the stool, and eventually fell off one side. It didn't hit the ground right away, but instead hovered a moment before finally plummeting and hitting the stage with a solid little plop.
"Well, I guess it's for the best that he's not the star, eh?" With that 'joke' out of the way, Silver bowed, Quin also bowed his head to mimic them, then both of them headed off stage.

Mercury was an obedient creature who picked up new skills quickly. This made him a very good fit for contests. A flying contest was not the best to show off all of his abilities, considering the limit on the number of forms he could take, but I could still do enough to make it worth entering. Most entries were limited to one creature, but I had three unique sets of abilities to display. When I took center stage I held out Mercury in his goo form for the audience. How could this useless lump of silvery slime fly? I silently slipped the drive into the pile of goo and listened to the crowd's murmur of surprise. Before their very eyes he morphed into a tiny dragon with wings popping out at either side and a long tail compiling itself behind him. He flapped his wings twice, setting the glittering liquid into place. "Welcome to the show, Mercury," I said. [29.5, 25.4] [Using Dragon Disk]

Ashe and Fafnir were no strangers to the Contest Hall. The crowd gathered to watch the show today was decent, which always spurred the best performances, Ashe thought. And today, they were out in the open, since it was a flying contest. It wouldn't be much of a show with a regular ceiling above them, would it? The drake followed Ashe, his head moving fluidly from side to side as he took everything in. He snorted, small tendrils of smoke trailing out, and Ashe tried to ignore the burnt flesh smell that went with a dragon's breath. He reached the center of the ring and stood, an arm raised in greeting to the crowd. "Hello, everyone! I'm Ashe and this is my Sarane, Fafnir!" Inyala was in the crowd today - Jinx had come and she was sitting with the Imp, safe and sound. Ashe felt the distance between them even though it was maybe a hundred yards at best. He spared an extra wave and a grin for his friends, then looked up at the Drake. "Let's get started!" Ashe swung up onto the drake's back, settling into the saddle already strapped on. Ashe's plan for all of this was to show Fafnir's skill at flying, but not let the crowd know what he had planned next. For that to work, he was going to be giving the commands through the ribbon he and Faf each wore, so no one could even hear the shouted commands up there. He gave one last crowd-pleasing wave, then thought the command to fly. Volar, Fafnir! The drake's large wings snapped open and he stretched them wide, then flapped downward at the same time his powerful hind legs kicked off. At the same time, Ashe shot a flare gun, for some added sparkle and maybe some smoke to add mystery to their take off. They were airborne in seconds, and climbing. When they were a comfortable distance, they leveled out, and Ashe demonstrated a few quick turns. First right, and then left - these were cues given using his legs. The drake swooped one way, then banked and changed direction, in an intricate pattern that took them above the crowd. He guided Fafnir lower, so the crowd might be just a tad too close for comfort, then he gave the command for him to go higher - it was a whistle, so he had to vocalize that much. Fafnir added altitude, and Ashe guided him in a spiral, gradually getting higher and higher. [Ashe demonstrates "Fly" and "turn left/right" and "Higher"]

At the peak of the spiral, Ashe leaned back in the saddle best as he could, thinking the command to stop. Whoa! Fafnir stopped moving, save for his wings, keeping them aloft but not moving forward or up anymore. Ashe patted his side in praise, sending the warm feelings down their connection, glad to have such an amazing Drake to work with. Now, Ashe liked to impress people, that much was true. But he liked to do it out of sheer power, or his amazing creatures. He wasn't quite a showman when it came to contests, like what items to use to embellish his creature's natural talents? He'd brought some things for light, thinking that would be cool. He pulled out the sparklers he had and leaned around.
Incendiar, Fafnir. Not too much. Don't burn me!
Fafnir knew only one way to breathe fire, so a plume of flame shot out of his mouth, though careful to not hurt his human at least. Ashe leaned forward as much as he could stand, putting the tips of the sticks in the corner of Faf's mouth so they would light.
That's enough, good boy!
The sparklers were lit! And if he would have looked down, he would have seen an annoyed Inyala glaring at him. Of all the foolish ways to die...
[Ashe demonstrates "stop," "Breathe Fire"]

With the sparklers lit, Ashe hoped the light trail would be as cool as it was in his mind's eye. He shifted his weight forward in the saddle, urging Fafnir to go. The Sarane took off, flying straight until Ashe guided him otherwise. The sparklers trailed a light smoke trail behind them, but Ashe didn't think the light would look as cool at this speed. Faster, Fafnir! Ashe urged this as he leaned further forward, and further. The Sarane picked up speed, which also pushed Ashe back in the saddle to repeat the same action in a cycle. The wind picked up at this speed, and Ashe made sure his legs were firm in their grip, feet firm in those stirrups. He had a sparkler in each hand, the wind whipping his hair this way and that. He leaned to the right and had Fafnir do a quick direction change, giving them the most room to do the next trick. Espira! Ashe couldn't see what the Sarane did with his wings, but suddenly they were spinning in a wide loop. They even seemed to be picking up speed, or was that just the fact that the ground and sky were becoming one? [Ashe demonstrates "Go," "Faster," and "Barrel roll"]
