Lunch had concluded without incident, neither Gallant nor Vixen had expressed any discontent with the other which had relieved Runa. It was growing later in the day and she was considering their return to the kennel. She couldn't wait until she could get a leash for the creatures that she wanted to bring with her places so that she could ensure they weren't running off when her back was turned. Plus it would make it easier to keep them under control if they were approached by strange creatures that were, perhaps, not very well behaved. Runa glanced at her two. Once again, Gallant was lazing in the sun and she allowed herself to admire him as she often did. The creature, having noticed her, turned his head to make eye contact with her and she smiled. She tried not to play favorites but Gallant was slowly becoming hers.
Vixen was paying less attention to Runa, creeping slowly along as though she felt she was invisible as she crept up on the slowly flicking tail of the Gallor. Runa was certain that Gallant was well aware that she had returned to playing pounce with that part of his anatomy and she had to admit it brought her a great deal of joy to see her creatures playing in such a carefree manner. She hoped they remained close even as Vixen grew larger, it could be dangerous if the two were not well bonded long before then. It would be similarly problematic if she did not have good control over both creatures before Vixen aged into a juvenile.
She had seen out of control pets before, and the situations had not been ones that had turned out necessarily well. She did not want to find herself in a similarly negative situation with any of her pets. Not ever. Of course, her natural bond with the creatures certainly gave her an edge up over other owners and trainers of the majestic beasts that lived in the lab realms. She looked at Gallant. She wondered how hard it would be to start teaching him to accept a rider. Or would it be better to wait a bit longer. She bit her lip as she pondered that. Did she really need a saddle and tack to start working with the creatures she intended to ride? She shook her head. Of course she did. How would she give directions to Gallant when she was sitting behind him if he wasn't bridled.
Vixen had finally pounced on Gallant's tail, she noted with a smile, poor Gallant. He was so good with the tenacious little creature that harassed him. She hoped that would always be the case.

The sun was starting to sink in the sky and Runa got to her feet. She snapped and both heads turned to look at her, which brought a smile to her face. That was a good sign, that they both responded without hesitation to her snaps. Gallant got to his feet as she pulled out the snack packs that she had brought with her, specifically for the purpose of leading reluctant creatures back to the kennel. She wasn't sure she could describe Gallant as reluctant, however, as he quickly closed the distance between them, Vixen trotting happily at his heels. Runa smiled and grabbed a few of her small treats anyway, tossing one to each.
Time to go home? she signed to the two of them. Gallant pressed his head against her hands, clearly ready for the day to be over. Vixen watched him do so and with a bit of a flick of her tail, pushed her own face against Runa which made her laugh. It was good that the little one had such a good role model in Gallant. It was further good that she was consistently bringing Vixen with her to the training area - their bond would be quite strong by the time she grew up and that would make it much easier to train her how to carry a rider. Perhaps she would bring Vixen with her when she was working with Gallant on riding. Sometime earlier she had changed her mind and had determined that it would be possible to train Gallant to be ridden without the tack that she could not yet afford.
Follow she signed at the two of them, dropping food behind her as she did so. It was less a concerted effort to train the animals to follow and more that she wanted to start introducing basic obedience concepts to them as they worked together each day. She looked at Vixen reflectively and wondered if Gallant would allow the creature to ride on his back while they trained. She had a feeling that would be entirely too much for Gallant to bear if she was to try and put the smaller animal on his back as well.
And she similarly had a feeling that she was going to leave the next day quite battered and bruised. With that cheery thought in mind, Runa set off, dropping treats behind her so that her creatures followed her out of the park and back home.

Runa was pretty sure she was going to regret every decision she had ever made in her entire life. Up to and including the decision she was going to make today. She had promised herself that she would wait until Gallant was very loyal and bonded to her before she attempted to climb on his back and, apparently, that day was today. She took a steadying deep breath as she assessed the animal in front of her. She reminded herself that he would not attack her. Not even if provoked. And she was pretty sure this was going to be a significant source of provocation.
Inhale. Exhale. Ok.
Hello my love she signed to him and Gallant canted his head to the side. She wondered if he knew that those motions were meant to soothe him. She approached him slowly, stroking down his side in a soothing manner as she contemplated how she would sit astride him. She was pretty sure Gallant could not fly and that made her fairly confident that she would not have to worry about him taking off while she struggled to scramble aboard. Although, of course, one day that would be the goal. She had selected a mount with wings for a reason and the ability to fly far above the world while astride such a magnificent beast was one that she had dreamed about. Of course, that day was far in the future. Especially if, as she suspected, Gallant was unable to fly.
She had ridden a few of the green broke animals at the stables she had been working at before she had fled but this was her first time working with a completely unbroken animal.
Well, she thought, here goes nothing. And she placed both hands on the back of her Gallor and lifted the front half of her body onto his back. And just as quickly, she found herself back on the dirt and Gallant several feet away from her, eyeing her with what could only be disgust.
This isn't negotiable she signed to him. She would be astride him by the end of the day, if it was the last thing she did.

Gallant eyed her suspiciously as she drew near to him again and she heaved a sigh that fell on his ears if not hers. She pulled out a treat and dangled it in front of him. This, apparently, was good enough for Gallant and he strode toward her, snagging the food from her hand (rather gently for such a large creature, she thought), and eating it in one bite. He eyed her suspiciously as she moved to his side and she stroked him again, waiting until she felt the telltale rumble of his purrs to kick off before she moved into action. Getting a good grip on him, she used all of her (not significant) strength to hoist part of her body over his back.
She was prepared this time, for the sudden movement that Gallant had used to dislodge her and she managed to stay on, at first anyway. Apparently aware that he had not dislodged her, Gallant reared slightly and Runa, not anticipating the movement, found herself on the ground again. This time, she hit harder and felt her breath leave her. She gasped a few times, likely appearing much like a fish who had been jerked from the water and after her breath returned, she stood up slowly.
Not necessary she signed at Gallant who had been staring down at her, perhaps concerned?, while she tried to remember how to make her diaphragm work.
The next three attempts did not go better. Gallant moved each time as she tried to get herself onto his back, fluttering his wings in annoyance at the third attempt. She imagined it looked ridiculous, a girl chasing after her Gallor as he moved away each and every time she tried to mount him. But...perhaps there was a better way? Perhaps...a bribe?

Thankfully, it was already nearly midday. The natural hunger that Gallant normally had during that time would assist with the bribe. She had brought quite a bit of the high value meat treats that Gallant seemed to prefer so that, too, played to her favor. She had allowed Gallant to move away from her and relax a bit while she contemplated her idea. With a snap, however, she caught his attention and when he noticed that she had food, he got to his feet and lumbered over. She had piled a great deal of the meat up and Gallant set to eating it. As he was doing so, Runa walked around to his side, running her hand along his feather as she did so and gently stroking. The purring began rapidly, the combination of her pats and the food seeming to put the large creature at ease.
Quickly, she pulled herself up on his back, her feet still dangling off the side of the beast as she did so. She had to jump a bit to do so but Gallant, still engrossed in his food, did not move other than shifting his weight a bit. Before he could finish his meal, she threw her right leg over his back, pulling herself upright astride Gallant, her feet tucked safely behind his wings. Unfortunately, once she had done so, Gallant finished eating.
At first, she thought he would not mind. Gallant did not allow her time to celebrate, however, before he reared and Runa found herself, once again, on the ground. She was going to be bruised all over once this was done, she thought to herself, rolling to her hands and knees and then standing and looking at Gallant. Stubborn creature, yes, but she could not blame him. No matter how strong their bond, it had to be odd to have someone on your back like that.

The bribe had definitely helped. A step in the right direction, to be sure. Food, Runa supposed, was one of the great motivators of the animals she worked with (although Gallant certainly responded well to affection as well as the food). She thought, perhaps, she had just pushed it too far that time. She needed to reward even allowing her body weight on him, she supposed. Maybe she needed to back it off a little bit. Yes. That would be the ticket. She nodded to herself. Shape the behaviors. She had moved too fast the last few times. She needed to take it slower.
She got the food out. Gallant's interest was immediately piqued. Unsurprisng, Runa thought as she piled the food up and snagged one piece for herself. She stepped aside and Gallant began to eat the food with abandon. Quickly, she made her way to the left side of the Gallor, hoisting herself up onto his back, but not swinging a leg over. She held herself there and when she felt Gallant begin to shift his weight, she slid off, rubbing his side as she did so and then hurrying around to feed him a treat. He pressed his head against her face and she smiled. Yes, that was better. Less painful, anyway. She needed to take things slow with Gallant - she didn't want to lose the trust that she had worked so hard to build, after all.
She wanted to try again. She snagged a small piece of meat out and this time, didn't pile food up for Gallant to eat. He turned his head to watch her as she stroked him on his side, burying her fingers in his silky coat as she did so and scratching a spot that she knew was just the right spot. Once the Gallor was suitably calm, she repeated her process, hoisting her upper body onto his back and then, when he shifted, sliding down and feeding him a treat. She wasn't certain, but she thought, perhaps, he had lasted longer this time than the last.

Runa was not an impatient person. The sun had sunk low in the sky and she knew that meant it would be best for them to head home. She had hoped they would be heading home with her astride her handsome beast but that was, apparently, not to be. She would have to walk home which was, well not the worst thing that could happen, she supposed. She had walked here and back many times before and she would like as not do so again and again. She would just have to try again tomorrow to ride the great beast.
But still, perhaps one more attempt this evening before she headed home? What did she have to lose? Well...other than a small amount of damage to herself. And that was hardly a concern. Sure, she may be black and blue when she woke up tomorrow (and she was certain she had seen the formation of bruises on her side when she had lifted her shirt to assess the damage) but that would be fine. A good motivator to learn how to treat her damages, she thought to herself. Of course...she'd never been successful at learning anything of the sort before...
Well, no matter. She grabbed some of the food she had left and approached the Gallor who eyed her and exhaled a deep breath. She stroked his side and waited for the tell tale vibrations against the pads of her fingers. There. She absolutely adored Gallant. He was just such a special creature to her already, they had the closest bond of them all and it grew each day that she spent with him, to her absolute delight. With a quick motion, she had her upper body across his back. Gallant stood for several heartbeats and then began to shift. Runa waited and when the movement stopped, quickly slid off and fed the Gallor a treat. That was good! That was progress.
Home, I think she signed to the creature, follow. And the two made their way from the park, heading home to food and bed.

The return to the park was not eventful. Gallant followed along attempting to snatch the food that she was holding in her hand to bribe him to come along out of her hand. Despite his attempts, he was careful not to snag her hands with his beak. The path they tread was a familiar one, she wondered if soon there would be a path worn into the grass that led to the area she trained in. Already, she could see spots where the grass was bent and seemingly had not returned to their upright position.
They arrived at the park in good time. She had brought plenty of food with them today as she was hoping to progress quite a bit further today than she had the day before and that would likely require a great deal more food. She was going to sit on the animal today, that was the plan. All he needed to do was let her get on him. She wasn't looking for anything more than that. Just letting her sit astride him without throwing her was the goal. She would work on the rest later. Teaching the animal to move with her astride and listen to commands was going to take a great deal longer than simply accepting a rider.
She stroked her fingers down the left side of her creature, soothing him with her touch. Gallant relaxed under her fingers, she could feel his muscles loosening against her fingers and the rumbling vibrations of his purr. That was good. She quickly pulled herself onto the back of the creature, allowing her feet to dangle with her upper body on the animal's back. He shifted under her and she waited. The purring vibrations had stopped and after a moment, so did his shifting movement. She exhaled and pulled herself the rest of the way up, throwing her right leg over the back of the animal. The movement seemed to startle Gallant and he stepped forward but did not move to toss her from his back. Before he could change his mind, she slid off his back and fed him a treat, scratching his cheek after he had eaten.

Emboldened by her continued success, Runa gave Gallant only a small break before she decided to attempt to sit on him again. She stroked him gently, feeling him relax under her fingers. The bond that the two of them shared was definitely helpful for training this particular trick. If they were not as close as they were, she suspected that Gallant would have actively attacked her at least once by now. The depth of their bond was what saved Runa from an attack by the creature.
She took a steadying breath and then quickly hoisted herself onto the back of Gallant, swinging a leg over quickly and running her hands down the animals neck soothingly. Gallant moved anxiously below her and Runa let her body move with Gallant. Still, all her riding skill didn't help her when Gallant unexpectedly reared up, dumping her on the ground and then putting a decent amount of distance between the two of them and eyeing her with annoyance. Runa let out a breath of irritation and then got up, brushing herself off and taking stock, already imagining the purple bruise that she would likely develop. She frowned at Gallant who fluttered his wings. It was, she reflected, a very good thing that Gallant was as of yet, unable to fly.
That wasn't necessary she signed at him. Still, she reflected, this could be going much, much worse. She had a feeling that a less well behaved creature would have attacked her outright after he threw her. She moved back over toward him, Gallant watching her with suspicious eyes until she held out a snack. She was grateful that Gallant was as food motivated as he was, it had absolutely made training him easier. As he ate the snack, she moved to his side, stroking him into relaxation.

The day was already half over and Runa, while pleased with the success they had made, was still frustrated with the fact that she was not yet riding Gallant. She also wanted to start working with him on actual commands but first she needed to be on him and stay on him for an extended period of time without being thrown off. With a deep breath, she hoisted herself up, tossing a leg over the back of Gallant who immediately began to move with nervous energy. Runa ran her hands down his neck, trying to settle the creature while she got her seat. Gallant reared again, but this time she was ready and stayed on, waiting for him to settle.
Gallant took several jumps forward and Runa winced as she was jarred against his back. She ran her hands down his neck again, desperately trying to settle the creature before she fell off. Finally, he settled and once he was standing still, she patted him, leaning forward so that she could scratch along his cheek. After a moment, she slid off the creature, going around to his front to reward the creature with a treat that she had brought along with her.
That was better she signed as Gallant pressed his head against her hands and allowed her to stroke down his cheek and neck while purring against her hands. She felt the vibrations against her hands start to slowly melt her frustrations with the animal away. He was her most consistent companion, the one she preferred to spend time with, if she was honest. He was uncomplicated, her Gallant, and loyal to a fault.
Let's try again she signed to him after a moment. This time, Gallant did not seem concerned as she went to his side. As she climbed up on his broad back, he stood more still than she was used to, although he did shift his weight form side to side as she got settled. He did not rear up to try and toss her although he did jump forward once she had gotten seated. He settled faster than he had any previous time and she stayed seated, waiting to see if he would start acting up again. When he didn't after a few minutes, she dismounted to reward the great creature.

The sun was dropping low in the sky and both Runa and Gallant grew weary. With gentle hands, Runa stroked Gallant who had rested his head on her shoulder. The creature was far too large to be doing so with the full weight of his head so Runa knew he was supporting it somehow as she let her hands play in the golden pelt of Gallant. With a sigh, she stepped back, Gallant raising his head as she did so and eyeing her askance. She smiled at him broadly.
Just a few more times, now she promised as she stepped to his left side, allowing her hands to brush against his side as she did so. She considered as she did so that perhaps there was an easier way to mount her large creature. Perhaps a way of him lowering himself to the ground so she could mount him easier. In the meantime, however, she would have to simply content herself with hoisting herself onto his broad back. She did so with some grace, pulling herself astride the animal who shifted for a few seconds under her. She frowned at that, she had hoped that Gallant would be used to her weight by now.
She scratched his neck gently, feeling him still. After a moment, he ceased his restless movement and stood, the girl sitting proudly on his back, no longer trying to keep her seat on the shifting mass of the Gallor. She slowly slid off, almost reluctantly, and rewarded Gallant, a smile on her lips as she contemplated her majestic creature. She could not wait to feel the wind in her hair as she rode Gallant through the skies. She took a deep breath at that thought. One day, one day she would soar.

The day was ending and Runa knew that this was likely her last attempt at sitting on Gallant's back that she would take today. If he did not stand for her to do so this time, she would call it a day and try tomorrow. With a small breath that she hadn't realized she was holding, Runa walked to the left side of Gallant, patting him to let him know that she was there and make sure he was not caught by surprise when she mounted him. She inhaled and exhaled to calm her nerves and then hoisted herself up on Gallant.
This time, there was no restless movement, the creature stood calmly under her. She could feel the tension in his muscles against her legs and she stroked him gently, hoping to feel that tension ease. Gallant took a few steps forward but made no attempt to throw her off his back. Runa smiled broadly, she'd done it. The bruises on her back did not ache as much in the realization that she had broken her Gallor to carry a rider. There were still many things to train him - how to move and how to stop moving, for example, not to mention turning. But this was an amazing victory; just sitting astride her Gallor.
Gallant took a few more steps and then settled, flexing his wings and holding his head proudly. Runa's smile grew larger. She knew what it was that Gallant wished to do - he wished to take to the sky, a wish she shared with him. What a lovely day this was, Runa thought to herself. As the sun dipped lower, Runa dismounted, rewarding her mount.
Time to go she signed at him and began to leave the park, the Gallor following behind her, sniffing the air for treats.

Runa had been surprised to find out that the Pasha-Sarane that she had...acquired had training. A lot of training, she had discovered while interacting with her. Someone had adored this creature. That someone had even given her some hand signals which Runa had co-opted.
That someone, Runa suspected, was gone. She wasn't sure what had happened to the previous owner of the Pasha-Sarane (Goewihg, the note had said) but she was sure that she was no longer able to provide the care that the Pasha had deserved. A such, she determined that she should bond a bit with the creature. She had brought Gallant with her as well so that if the Pasha did decide to attack her, Runa had a form of defense. Gallant was slightly stronger than the Pasha, she suspected (although not much) and she hoped that meant he would defend her if this Goewihg decided to attack her.
However, she had not behaved viciously. Rather, she was walking behind Runa with little reluctance. Two quick taps on her thigh had the Pasha trotting along just behind her while Gallant looked rather put upon that the other creature was so close to his person. It was slightly amusing that the animal she had spent so much of her time training still had to be bribed to follow along behind her but this new one whom she had yet to spend much time with required no such bribe.
They had a purpose for the day, however. Runa had packed strips of meat for Gallant and strips of bark for Goewihg. A recent shopping trip had allowed her to purchase a new training tool that she was hoping would help her overcome the fact that she could not speak. From her understanding of the object, it was used as a form of reward. However, in order for the animals to perceive it as such, she had to associate the noise that it produced with food. Runa found the concept quite interesting; some kind of effect where a noise was associated with food. She wondered if it had ever been studied.
With that thought in mind, she stood facing the two creatures. She had flashed an open palm at Goewihg who had halted immediately. It would be incredible, she thought, when Gallant obeyed like Goewihg did. She unpacked the treats and the red clicker. Seemed simple enough. Just push the button and then feed the animals.
She held the clicker in one hand and the food in the other. She pushed the button and then immediately offered both animals. They ate it quickly. Great, Runa thought to herself, just had to repeat the process maybe a dozen times and they should be good to go.

Runa was ready to spend the morning training her two creatures on the clicker. She had brought their breakfast along to act as their rewards rather than feeding them at the kennel. She imagined that hunger would make them more keen for their rewards and make the click even more of a positive for them. While she was unable to hear the noise, it was clear that her animals did. She clicked the button and then treated them both immediately. This was an excellent decision. She had found it difficult to reward Gallant quickly while training him to carry her as a rider. With a clicker that provided a reward immediately, she had a feeling it would be even easier to train Goewihg to carry a rider. Which, of course, was an eventual goal with the Pasha.
She rubbed Gallant's cheek absently as he pressed his face against her hands. To her surprise, Goewihg pushed her snout against her hands as well, apparently in an attempt to elicit pets. Gallant snapped at her and Runa frowned, tapping his beak quickly and causing him to draw back in annoyance. She rarely had to discipline Gallant for any type of behavior anymore. She hadn't expected him to demonstrate such jealousy - he had no issues with Runa paying attention to Vixen. Perhaps it would be good that the two of them were spending time together.
She backed away from both and clicked the clicker again, rewarding both of them quickly. The pieces of food she had brought were small enough that each creature could eat them in a single bite. Both of them were surprisingly gentle in taking food from her although she knew that both could have easily snapped her fingers off with their sharp muzzle and/or beak. She clicked the clicker again and rewarded the two creatures immediately. They were starting to get it, she suspected. Both of them seemed to perk up at the sound of the click itself and almost seemed to anticipate a reward being given directly after the clicker was clicked. She would have to repeat this process with Vixen. Or perhaps she would use it with another new animal. She had been considering adding to her stable but she wasn't sure she had the time. Especially not when she was hoping to get Gallant and Goewihg trained up enough that they could compete in future tournaments.
She had been watching several of the tournament battles with keen interest, identifying moves that she would like to train Gallant. She wasn't sure that Goewihg would be able to learn to battle as effectively as the Gallor was able to but she was certainly going to try.

Runa wondered if Goewihg missed her previous owner. She had to assume they had a deep bond although Goewihg was quite friendly toward Runa as well. Gallant, she was fairly certain, would not have tolerated another humanoid petting him so quickly but Pasha-Sarane were perhaps friendlier than Gallor were? Or perhaps less hot tempered? She should have done her research on the Pasha before she had brought the creature out with her into the training area, she supposed, but she had been impatient. She wanted to see what Goewihg could do and so far she had been impressed. The training the Pasha had was setting the bar higher for Gallant.
She clicked the device and treated both of the animals immediately. They snapped their food up happily and she had noticed that they almost seemed to anticipate that they would be fed shortly after the click. That, from her understanding, was the point. Now, granted, she hadn't seen the old stable owner use them extensively but she recalled that the master of the house had trained his hunting Vulticus using a clicker and he had done something similar where he clicked and then rewarded in quick succession. It had only taken a a few repetitions before the click itself had led to wagging tails in anticipation of being rewarded.
She clicked again and both animals perked up, Gallant pricking his ears forward and Goewihg flaring at her nostrils as if she had expelled air in a snort. She treated them both quickly, smiling as they gobbled down their food. This had been a great idea. She had been worried that she wasn't going to be able to communicate effectively with her animals but the clicker was certainly bridging the gap. She reached out to stroke the two of them, noting the differences between the fur of her Gallor and the hard scales of the Pasha-Sarane. There were few other places she would rather be than at the training park working with her animals.
She clicked her clicker again and immediately rewarded, watching with a smile as Goewihg and Gallant snapped up their food as quickly as they could. Other than the earlier incident, Gallant seemed to be doing better with Goewihg but she was keeping a careful eye on them to make sure that nothing changed. It would be most likely impossible for her to separate the two of them if they decided to get into a fight. She was fairly certain that Gallant had the upper hand over Goewihg but not by enough for her to comfortably say that he wouldn't take pretty significant damage in a fight against Goewihg.
