Name: Gallant Stamina: 7 Strength: 7 Resistance: 4 Dexterity: 5 Mentality: 2 If Runa could hear, the noises surrounding her would have been deafening. As it was, Runa could hear nothing. Perhaps this offered her an advantage as her disabilities rarely did. Runa's attention was solely fixed on the creature she was bribing with the meat she carried in her opened hand. Her eyes watched as the creature attempted to snap the food from her again, to no available. It's beak opened in annoyance and it eyed her askance. She simply smiled and continued to hold the meat out to the creature who followed her, reluctance obvious in the way he walked. She admired the bronze feathers that clung to the creature's elegant frame and the muscles that rippled along his body as he walked, thankful that the gods who had stolen her voice and her ears and not also taken her eyes.
As they trotted along, Runa took note of the way fewer and fewer people surrounded them until they were in a large, empty arena. This felt right, she nodded and tossed the creature his reward. He opened his mouth in what was surely a reprimand. Runa opened her mouth in a grin in response and watched the creature's tail lash. Yes, Gallant, as she'd dubbed him, was not amused by their travels this day. It was unsurprising, they'd had little time to get acquainted and let their bond settle before dragging him off to teach him what she needed him to know. Her selection of the Gallor had been deliberate - a mount and a guard all in one.
Gallant flexed his wings and she once again found herself admiring the majestic creature. He would carry her through the skies one day, of that she could be sure. She'd ridden a Gallant once, in a moment of rare freedom from the before time. Had she been able to, the feeling of soaring through the air would have caused her to whoop with delight. As it was, she had beamed when she landed and handed the creature's reins back to the old man who had taught her how to ride. If he wanted to, Gallant could flee to the skies and leave her. It was not his bond keeping him here, she knew, but the promise of the meat that she carried. Animals were straightforward in a way that sentient beings never were - they had their wants and she met them. In return, they repaid her with adoration and obedience. Transactional, perhaps, but simple and easy to understand.
She eyed the Gallor again and pondered how to start. She had thought to purchase certain training aids that would assist with her ability to train creatures despite her lack of hearing or speech but she hadn't the money, at least not yet. Perhaps the first step was to earn the creature's trust? Or should she roll right into the training she intended to do. She was unwilling to ride without equipment and she would prefer to have basic obedience on board before she taught the animal anything violent. She eyed the talons on the creature's feat. Certainly, it would be best to ensure that she had the beast well in hand before opting to train him to be her guardian. | Runa 0.1

Runa had spent the afternoon pondering how she would teach the creature to look at her. She knew, from her own youth, that she had not responded to the flash of hands unless she was looking at whichever owner was saying her name. She could not simply sign at the Gallor and hope that he would obey. No, she needed a way to get his attention. If she could speak, she could simply say his name but Runa had no such abilities. The animal could hear though. And one did not only use their voices to make sounds. Deaf she may be, but she knew other body parts made noise from reactions she had observed around her. Fingers rubbing rapidly across the index finger knuckle must have done, for she'd remembered the way the other maids had turned to look whenever her former mistress had done so. She mimicked the motion she had seen her owners do.
Gallant's head rose and looked around. His eyes did not turn to her but there must have been a sound for the creature to react like that. Runa smiled. That was good then. She had wanted to use a whistle for this but the hand motion worked just as well. She could use signals for the rest of his commands, as long as he turned to look at her so that she could give them. And, unlike the whistle, this was free. She eyed the pouch of coin that was mostly air with annoyance. She had found work when they had arrived but the work wouldn't start until the next month. Until then, she would have to do odd jobs to make money to support herself and Gallant.
She stepped closer to the animal who was laying down, his neck outstretched as he basked in the early morning sun. She would need to be close enough to reward him the minute he looked at her so that he learned what the noise meant. She did not need a long look, not yet anyway, but she did need his eyes to connect with hers. When she commanded him further, she wanted to ensure she had his full attention.

Gallant lazed in the morning sun, fluttering his feathers appreciatively at the breeze that brushed along his wings. A powerful creature, her Gallant. She hoped she could prove herself to be his equal and demonstrate herself worthy of being the companion of one such as he. Her old master had said she had a gift for animals - a rare compliment that he had even signed to her. Normally, the words her owners flung at her were intended to break her down, not build her up and express that they were impressed with her skills. Perhaps this was why the animal, though he could have, did not take to the air and leave her behind.
It was a shame being astride the great being was not in the immediate future. She glanced at the sky and remembered the feeling of the wind whipping through her hair. She could not wait until she could feel that way again. But alas, the creature needed a great deal more obedience and she needed a great deal more equipment before she hopped astride Gallant and let him take to the skies. In fact, she needed to teach the creature to carry her whilst on all four feet long before she tried to fly with the animal.
She took several small pieces of meat out and strode over to the creature. He did not look at her or even move. She snapped her fingers and the creature looked at her. She nodded and gave him a piece of meat. That got his attention and he cocked his head at her, apparently noticing that she had more food in her hands. She smiled at him and palmed a piece of meat in her right hand. She reached her index finger out and touched it to his nose, letting him smell the meat that she had hidden. Then she slowly raised her index finger to her nose. When the creature raised his eyes to look at her, she nodded again and fed him the meat. She waited until the animal looked away from her again and then palmed another piece of meat.
She repeated the process, a quick snap so that he was paying attention and then raising her hand to her nose so that the creature's eyes followed the meat he could smell in her hand. This time, she counted slowly to 10 before feeding the creature, delighted when he did not drop his eye contact too quickly. Watch me was not a difficult command but it was a critical foundation to build on for additional commands. | Runa 0.3

It was fortunate, Runa thought to herself as she snagged a few more pieces of meat, that Gallant appeared to be food motivated. In her past, she had encountered animals that could not be moved by food or affection and training them had been a fairly significant pain in the backside. Gallant, fortunately, did not suffer from such problems. Palming a piece of meat, she turned to the creature with a smile. He had been doing well so far. Training was not a one and done thing but developing a strong obedience background would hopefully set the tone for their relationship. Training also would help develop her bond better, something that Runa considered incredibly important.
She snapped her fingers and Gallant turned his head toward her. Rather than placing her finger on his beak as a lure, she simply lifted her finger to her nose. Gallant's eyes followed her and made contact with her own. She nodded and then counted slowly in her head to 15. The creature's eyes never moved from hers. With a smile, she tossed the treat to Gallant who gobbled it hastily. It was, perhaps, time to start phasing out the treats. Perhaps when she could count to at least 30 without the animal looking away.
She palmed another piece of meat and snapped her fingers. Gallant looked at her and she lifted her index finger to her nose and smiled when the animal locked eyes with her. She started counting. At 17, Galllant broke eye contact. She frowned and snapped her fingers again. When Gallant looked, she showed him the treat, and then repeated the hand signal, lifting her finger to her nose. At his eye contact, she started counting. This time, she made it to 20 and tossed the animal the treat. Once he finished, Gallant stretched his beak out toward her and nudged at her fingers. She smiled at his interest and reached her fingers out to stroke the feathers of his cheek. Gallant normally was tolerant of her doing so but this time, he pressed his face into her hands, surprising her. She stroked the creature for a moment and eyed the sun in the sky. Noon already. Perhaps time for a break.

Runa blinked her eyes blearily as she woke from the nap that she had taken. Gallant lay a few feet from her, still stretched out in the sun. She had braced herself against the tree to sleep after she had eaten lunch (which she had tried to share with Gallant although she knew the creature was a strict carnivore and had laughed at the expression on his face). She had given him a handful of the meat she had which he had eaten with undisguised delight. The break from training had been much needed by both of them. She stretched as she stood, feeling her muscles loosen.
She bent down and grabbed more pieces of meat. The progress they had made so far was good but she wanted reliable responses without the need for a food bribe before she would consider the animal trained. She looked at the meat in her hand and cocked her head, considering. Perhaps a few more repetitions before she tried to phase out the food. She wanted to make sure that the animal had fully learned the trick before she began phasing out food. She wanted extended attention so that she could administer additional commands once she had the creature looking at her. She palmed a small piece of meat and snapped her fingers.
Gallant looked at her and she touched her index finger to her nose, giving the command for watch me. Gallant met her eyes and she began to count. At 30, she tossed the animal his treat. This was good and she stroked his cheek, hoping this communicated her pleasure to him. Under her fingers, she felt a rumble and she paused in her pats, wondering if the creature was displeased. However, his eyes were closed and he pressed his head against her hands so she shrugged and resumed her ministrations.
After a moment, she removed her fingers from the soft feathers of her Gallor and took a breath. Yes, time to try without treats. She snapped her fingers and Gallant opened his eyes, she exhaled a breath and lifted her index finger to her nose. Gallant locked eyes with her. She counted in her head and when she reached 30, she broke out into a large grin and scratched Gallant on the cheek to let him know she was pleased.

It was nearly time for their day to end. The sun was hanging low in the sky and Runa could feel herself growing weary. Still, she wanted Gallant to know watch me before they headed out. They were there, she knew, she just needed to proof it. Training was a lifelong pursuit but she felt that, by this point, Gallant was fairly well tamed. If that was the case, they could head home and go back to the kennels where Runa could sleep. That would be...nice, to say the least. And perhaps she could spend time with an animal that wasn't Gallant. Not that she didn't enjoy his company, the creature was intelligent and easy to train which was enjoyable for her but she was looking forward to spending time with other creatures. She had been delighted to discover how easy they were to obtain and many had caught her eye.
She snapped her fingers and Gallant focused on her, she placed her finger on her nose and Gallant made eye contact. She counted in her head, slowly, the eyes of her creature boring into her. She had no treats on her person and surely the creature knew this. Despite that, he was eager to please and when she had counted to a minute, she smiled and tossed the animal a treat. He understood what she wanted and the watch me command would serve the purpose that she needed it to. There were more commands to learn, and learn he would, but their training was done for the day. She found the remnants of the treats that she had brought and held it out to Gallant. The creature stretched out his neck toward her, and she began to step away. Eagerly, the animal followed, obviously intent on the meat.
In this way, Runa led the large creature from the area and headed home.

Switching from working with her absolutely enormous gallor to the the baby Repointe was quite the adjustment, Runa thought to herself as she carried the small animal along. This wasn't a dedicated training session for any particular reason - she was just looking to spend time with the creature and maybe develop their bond a little better. She felt that it was prudent to make sure that she kept working with all of the animals that she had brought into her kennels. It was important to her that none of them sat at home, lonely, and waiting for her to spend time with them. Gallant was back at the kennel waiting for her to take him out again - which she would but after such an intensive training session, she didn't want to overwork him. Plus it was kind of nice to spend time with a creature so small.
She did smile to herself at that thought. Despite being a baby, Vixen was larger than Gremlin. She had been cautious not to house Gremlin near any of the carnivores that lived in her kennels - not until she had a better handle on them. She was planning on purchasing a farm once she had saved up the money...if she ever saved up the money so it was critical that the animals could live in harmony without the bars that she was currently using. She certainly intended to live with her animals.
Ah, here she was, she'd arrived at the training area that she had been using earlier. With a smile, she set down the Repointe, the sudden movement apparently causing it to wake. Runa had selected a name for the young one although it, perhaps, wasn't necessary. Vixen she signed at the creature now that her hands were not full. The movement meant little to the creature but it made Runa feel better to name her in such a manner. Runa sat next to the creature, leaning against the tree in the area, grateful for the shade. She held out a finger for the creature who sniffed it before rubbing her head against the outstretched hand. This was what Runa had missed about baby animals - their trusting nature. Certainly Gallant had a greater bond with her but Gremlin and that odd Lotine she'd named Victory were cautious of her. Vixen, however, was much more curious and open to interaction. Gently, Runa rubbed the overlarge ears.

The creature had grown more and more curious and was now perched on Runa's lap staring at her. She had learned that the female Repointes were notably more territorial and aggressive than the males - something she found rather interesting. Their habits were actually quite fascinating and her limited reading ability had indicated that Repointe females were not the default parent which was a little unusual, in Runa's opinion.
Of course, lab created creatures didn't necessarily have to conform to natural biological urges, Runa supposed. The creature was apparently tired of waiting for Runa to interact and took it upon herself to push her face into Runa's fingers. She grinned at the thing, caving to the request and stroking her palm down the creature's head onto it's back and then repeating the process. Much like Gallant had done once, the creature began to vibrate. A quick check revealed no snarl or teeth bared so she continued with her ministrations, the animal pressing back up against her hand whenever it left her.
She had seen grown Repointes, their owners astride the majestic animals, and she had marveled at the breadth of their horns and the way they carried themselves. It was hard to image that such a small creature would someday grow as large as Gallant. And sooner rather than later, she would be able to ride the creature as, the way she understood it, Repointe could be ridden as soon as they were juveniles which wouldn't be terribly long now. The repointe on her lap gave her a reproving nip as, while her thoughts had idled, she had stopped stroking the creature. She gently tapped the creature's nose in reprimand for the bite and the creature drew back with a disgruntled expression.
No biting she signed at the creature. There were some things that Runa simply would not tolerate, and biting was one.

Runa wondered, not for the first time, if she ought to get a playmate for Vixen. The teeth that had nipped at her were quite sharp and it may have been prudent to have an animal that was a little more able to wrestle with the small creature without getting injured. Or perhaps if she just waited until the creature was a juvenile, it could play with Gallant. She pondered that a bit longer. It may be prudent to bring Gallant to meet Vixen soon and make sure the two of them could get along without trying to harm each other. She certainly wanted to introduce the two before Vixen grew into a juvenile as she didn't want the territorial instincts to develop that strongly. It might be interesting to see how they did - Repointe females and Gallor males were both territorial but if she could convince Gallant and Vixen that they were family, well, the two would bond quite strongly.
Vixen was up and bounding again, her ears going every which way as she ran around the arena. Runa was content to watch her for now. Every now and then, Vixen would stop and check to make sure that Runa was still in the vicinity - demonstrating that domestic repointes were a little more reliant on their owners than the typical Repointe. She knew that the non-domestic versions often left their little ones alone for much of the day but the domestic types were a little more people oreinted than the non-domestic types. A particularly ambitious leap onto a stump had Vixen tumbling down onto her face. She got up and stretched, not looking in Runa's direction as Runa struggled to control her laughter.
Vixen trotted back over to Runa and rubbed her head against Runa's hand. Runa scratched behind one large ear, marveling at the thickness and softness of the little one's fur.

Small creatures could not go, go, go all day. After the time she spent running around in the grass, Vixen had collapsed on the ground next to her owner, her eyes dropping. Runa glanced at the sky and noted that it was nearly mid day and that she was a bit hungry. She found the food she had packed and unwrapped it, offering Vixen the fish that she had gotten. Vixen took the fish gratefully, eating it with quick bites. Runa ate her own food slower, just break and an apple that she had gotten off a vendor for free since the bread was going stale and the apple was bruised. One day, she thought wistfully, one day she would be able to eat food that wasn't discounted for imperfection.
Vixen did not seem to have any of the same concerns about her food and in a matter of bites, the fish was gone and the little creature's stomach rounded out from her meal. Runa smiled as she noticed that the creature's eyelids were even droopier than before. She patted her lap gently and the little thing crawled into it gratefully, curling into a ball and pulling her tail over her muzzle. Runa stroked gently down the back of the creature, feeling the gentle rise and fall of her ribs as Vixen drifted off into sleep.
A good idea, Runa thought, leaning back against the tree. Perhaps she ought to take a nap as well. The warmth of mid afternoon, a full belly, and the comforting nearness of the little creature soon lulled Runa to sleep.

It was the nightmare that jarred Runa awake. They didn't always happen during her naps but they did happen occasionally when she slept during the day. And, unfortunately, constantly at night. Runa imagined that once upon a time she had slept restfully but that time predated any memory that she had. It took her a moment to recall where she was. Once she had regained her memory, she looked to see where Vixen was and was surprised to see the creature staring at her with concern.
No matter she signed to the creature just a dream. Vixen crept closer and gently nudged at her fingers. Runa gently stroked the creature, hoping she hadn't scared her too badly. She hated the thought of traumatizing the little thing. She glanced at the sky.
It was later that she had thought. Perhaps it was time to head home for the evening. The animals at home were likely starting to grow hungry for their evening meal and it wouldn't do to be late for that. She had already had to relocate Gremlin to the very furthest corner of the kennels so that the other animals didn't startle him while they were calling out for their food. One day she would have to find another herbivore so that Gremlin could have a friend and wasn't stuck spending all his time with carnivores that would eat him were it not for the bond they shared with their mutual mistress.
Time for home she signed to Vixen who cocked a head at her. Luckily, she was still small enough that it was no matter at all to pick up the small creature and carry her out of the training area back to the kennel. She just had to hope that she had gotten all the basic obedience taken care of before Vixen grew any larger.

Gallant had not been amused when Runa had brought the small Vixen to him but, not recognizing her as prey and, apparently, noting that she was a female rather than a male, was not outwardly aggressive toward it. Runa had breathed a sigh of relief when both creatures followed along behind her, snapping up pieces of the food she dropped to lure them along to the training area. She mostly just wanted to socialize Vixen with Gallant before Vixen grew any larger. She wished she could have had the same opportunity with Gallant, honestly, but he was well grown by the time she had adopted him. Which was fine, she enjoyed the creature nonetheless and their bond was quite strong, all things considered.
Despite her small stature, Vixen kept up rather well with the larger Gallor and the humanish that led them for awhile. But it was clear to Runa that the distance was starting to wear on the little thing. With a small smile, she had scooped her up to carry her the rest of the way. One day, it would be Vixen who was carrying her rather than the other way around, but for now, Runa was happy to carry the small creature to the park.
Play nice Runa signed as a reminder to Gallant as she set the small repointe down. Gallant rubbed his face against her cheek as if to remind her that he would never do anything to upset her. She also was hopeful that the Gallor would recognize that Vixen was just a baby and treat her accordingly. She wasn't 100% sure how devoted male Gallors were as parents but her understanding was that they were quite devoted to their family. She just wasn't quite sure how to convince Gallant that Vixen was family and not just an annoying creature that hassled him all the time.
Which was, Runa noted, exactly what Vixen was doing at that very moment. Gallant had turned abruptly and Runa had followed his glance to see that Vixen had pounced on one taloned foot. With a wince, Runa scooped up Vixen before she could nip at the feathered feet and frowned at the creature.
No biting she reminded the creature. She did not want to risk upsetting Gallant and she also didn't think it would be fair to allow Vixen to chomp at Gallant either. Even though the Repointe was still young, her teeth were quite sharp and Runa had not enjoyed, very much, the feeling of those sharp little teeth against her skin either. Gallant rubbed his face against hers again and she exhaled deeply, forcing herself to relax. Gallant wasn't going to eat Vixen. In fact, Runa was pretty sure that by the end of the day, they would be very, very close friends.

Gallant, Runa thought, would make a wonderful dad given the opportunity. He had lazed in the sun, seemingly refusing to take part in Vixen's antics until Runa had noticed the deliberate slowness with which he drug his tail in front of the small Repointe. Clearly, he understood that the little one was just that - a little one. She doubted he would have been as a gentle were she a full grown juvenile. Perhaps, Runa reflected, she would be able to teach them to play fight. They seemed to have worked out how to play with each other now but once Vixen was nearly as large as Gallant, they would be quite evenly matched. By the time she reached her adult size, Runa was pretty sure Vixen might actually be the stronger battler. Of course, Gallant would be able to take to the skies so that might leave them fairly evenly matched.
When she had last been in town, she had seen signs that indicated some sort of battle/tournament was taking place at the fighting pit. She had gone to watch a few matches, impressed by the power that the creatures seemed to have. She wasn't sure she would ever be able to battle her own creatures - she had seen a Gallor much like Gallant in a few fights there and she had even seen it lose. She would hate to watch her proud Gallant lose to any creature.
She slanted her eyes over to check on Vixen and Gallant. Vixen appeared to be attempting to stalk the tail of the Gallor although Runa thought perhaps she wasn't doing the best job possible. Still, it was impossible to miss the determination in the lines of her body and the way her eyes were fixed on the Gallor tail. The pounce on the tail was not a thing of beauty, but, Runa noticed, Vixen did not seem to bite very hard but rather mouthed the tail before bounding away. Gallant did not seem distressed but Runa was mindful that this could change at any time. She got closer to the pair so that she could monitor for vibrations that would indicate a growl. It could be tricky, she had learned, discerning a growl of discontent from a purr of pleasure through vibrations alone but she was determined to learn it.
Playing nice? she signed at Gallant when he turned to eye her as she grew closer, perhaps waiting for her to administer a command. When she did not do so, he turned his attention back to the tiny predator that he was playing with, swishing his tail at her in enticement. Runa thought perhaps she would have to get more young creatures for her Gallant to play with.

Runa was going to have to track down something small to wrestle with Vixen, she decided. There was something that she had been considering picking up but had felt she really didn't have the time for already. But it might be fun to see the two of them wrestling about.
It would also give her another creature to train for battle. But was that something she wanted or needed? She bit her lip, unsure. She could always get a female Sarane and not have to worry about the breaking part of the process which, frankly, she wasn't sure she had the stomach for. She always wanted to be able to treat her animals with respect and breaking a Sarane drake so that she could continue to work with it did not seem very respectful. Perhaps a different species would be more appropriate. Although perhaps a Hen would serve well as a companion for her Repointe.
Do you want a friend? she asked Vixen, although the creature certainly did not understand the question, she approached the humanish and rubbed her face against Runa's leg. Gallant had also approached, clearly looking for the affection that Runa had bestowed upon Vixen. She knelt to stroke the repointe a few times before standing so that she could scratch the Gallor behind his ears. Loyal, she recalled, Gallors were known for their incredible loyalty - once it had been earned. She wondered if she had earned it yet or if there was still a great deal of work to do.
Gallant rested his head on her shoulder and she felt the vibrations of what she had come to learn was a purr. Vixen made a similar rumble and she had recently learned how to differentiate between the purr and a growl for Gallant at least. She hadn't felt the growl of Vixen yet to learn how it differed from her purr. She was sure would once the creature was much older and was more prone to expressing annoyance through growling. Especially once she started trying to ride her since she had a feeling that Vixen would not be particularly amenable to that particular training. She was similarly certain that Gallant would not be interested in being ridden.
Hungry? she asked the two creatures as Vixen began to sniff at the food she had brought with them. Runa looked up at Gallant who apparently had also noticed that she brought food with them and was starting to head toward the food. With a smile, she began to select packs out for each of them - fish for Vixen and some meat for Gallant - and unwrapped it. She had, once again, brought something simple - bread and some berries. She set food in front of each animal as appropriate and started eating her own.
