A creature’s cunning is a measure of how intelligent it is. This rough guide is here to help players understand their creatures better, and what they are capable of. Keep in mind: Cunning (intelligence) and Mentality (magic power/willpower) are two different things. Cunning does not have a direct effect in battle like Mentality does, and the two are not necessarily related.
1 Dense:
These creatures struggle to understand even simple concepts, and they can be difficult to train because of it. They will follow instructions very literally, even if it’s not a good idea. (For example, they might ‘go’ without ever thinking of when to ‘stop’ unless you tell them.) Thankfully, not many (natural) creatures are this dumb.
2 Critter:
These creatures act instinctually and have very little foresight. They can be very skittish because it takes them a while to determine what is or isn’t a threat, including their owners. They might even run into harm’s way trying to escape something harmless. They can be taught what to do with some effort and bribery (aka treats).
3 Animal:
These creatures are clever enough to fend for themselves. They might even learn some things on their own, such as how to trick people into giving them treats! Most animals fit into this category, and they can be taught many tricks by a good trainer. They generally understand when other creatures (such as their owners) are friendly and enjoy their company without needing much in return.
4 Beast:
These creatures are somewhere between animals and people. They may have some people-like behaviors, such as using tools, communicating with unique calls, or planning for the future. Still, they aren’t able to learn languages or form a complex society on their own. They are easy to teach and can learn a wide range of tricks.
5 Sentient:
These creatures are as intelligent as a person. They are able to understand language, even if they can’t physically speak it themselves. Sentient pets are able to learn character skills if taught, as well as all of the usual tricks and things that they can learn.
* All pets with the ability ‘Speak’ or ‘Telepathy’ are considered sentient, even if their species is not usually sentient otherwise.
6 Mystic:
These creatures have a wider understanding of the world, some kind of connection to it that others couldn’t possibly understand. This connection is perhaps magical, as they are often very powerful magic users as well. Whatever it is, people often struggle to understand it. There is seemingly no limit to what they can learn.
7 Divine:
These creatures know even the deepest mysteries of the universe. They no doubt use powerful magic to deepen their understanding of things, but it is difficult for others to understand. They can do just about anything they put their mind to, but why they do it is a mystery to most.
