One would think that going hunting to a Sarane nest would mean bringing a Sarane, but Amelia had recently returned from a trip with Maggie and all the others were either too big or simply uninterested in coming to the mines. However, on her last scope April had seemed interested in spending time with the snow leopard, so along she came. Charlie was interested in coming out, so along her came as well. The mammalian collected all her mining stuff, and off she went. The cart jostled as it moved over bumps and holes. Things clattered inside the cart as she walked along, and any creatures that were hiding amongst had easily ran off by now. Luckily, treasures were still hidden inside the walls, so she knew that her efforts would not be wasted. She set her cart down and adjusted the light so she could mine freely. She had come here a good handful of times, and mining was always an enjoyable task. Some trips they left with very little, some trips the cart was heavy from all the treasures and new friends she had found. Those trips were always the most exhausting, and going home was determined by when the food ran out and the group was exhausted. April was currently napping in the comfort of the cart, as she wasn't interested in walking around too often.
She set the cart down when she was happy with how far they had come, and when she was ready to start looking for treasures. A large Vulticus walked next to her. His silver sheen reflected from the dull lantern light, and the carnivore may send another predator running. He was always a good source of protection for her, although only a bit bigger than her, the Vulticus was significantly stronger. He brushed his head against the snow leopard's side, pushing her against the wall.

The Vulticus was a gorgeous creature to see, and his divine nature was why Gentle had originally adopted Charlie into her home. Amelia of course did not understand why Charlie was part of her family, but he had been kind and accepting ever since she had gotten into this new life. He explained things in a way she would understand, and even though he could not tell her what happened, he helped her adjust and figure out to not only survive, but succeed. His sharp claws were efficient at digging, and although it was not his ideal pastime, he was happy to help the mammalian as she struggled through. She rustled through her cart. The tools, food, towels and other various items bumped into each other, making loud sounds that would echo through the mines. April curled away from the mammalian, sneaking into the warmth of her cart. She closed her eyes and resumed back to sleep. It wouldn't take long for her to rest enough to want to come back out.
Another day in the dark caves hey? But today we're going for a different purpose. You said we're supposed to find an item for this guy? And how again were we supposed to find this item?
Well, apparently the item is in a Sarane nest. I found a little bit of extra information on the location of this nest.
The Vulticus turned to her and let out a low growl.
Wait. You said you had some direction where we were going. So we're using vague directions because we're trying to find this Sarane nest?! Do you want me to get killed?
He didn't wait for her response, instead he walked away from her towards a large pile of fallen stones. He could dig into them better than the snow leopard. Her tools did better on things that were compact. Stones would be easier for him to pull out with his strength and claws.

Charlie ignored the mammalian's telepathic protests as he began to pull away rocks. It wouldn't be long that he would be able to stay in one place and mine, because they would have to get moving soon. Amelia had created a contraption to hook the cart to him. And, even though he didn't like it, he would help lug the cart through the tunnels. The powerful Vulticus pulled rocks aside. Amelia's plan was that they would walk for quite some time. When they began to tire, they would rest and casually look for rocks. Amelia would dig at the wall, Charlie would dig among the ground, and April would help search if she was awake. The hatchling would spend many hours sleeping as it was growing at such a rapid rate. Typically hatchlings would spend their waking hours eating, and then sleep for long hours. For the meantime, the mining duties would be up to mostly Amelia and a little bit Charlie.
Amelia pulled her pick against the wall. They had already walked far into the mines to get here, so it was a good idea to stop for a little bit to rest. Amelia pulled chunks of dirt out, which fell to her feet. Mining was a lot of hard labour, and the mammalian wondered how she had managed to develop such a passion for this. Gentle had loved mining, and put a lot of work into it. Amelia had learned from the beginning of her amnesia (the furthest back she can remember is the first day when she woke up as a mammalian,) that mining was something she would do a lot and find a lot of enjoyment with. She had all the equipment, and it was obvious that it had been used frequently. Which made her think that she had enjoyed it immensely. Who would mine that much if they didn't like it?

A small wind whispers throughout the mine shaft, sounding like the ghoulish calls of the dead. Perhaps the mines was trying to warn you of difficulties to come?

The time crawled by slowly. Few words were shared between the vulticus and the mammalian. She would dig into the wall, pulling things out. Charlie, on the other hand, was helpful to sift through what had been dropped on the ground. After almost an hour of moving around the small area, Charlie licked at Amelia's face, leaning against the wall.
Y'know, we've been at this for awhile now. Any interest in going exploring a little more. I know it sucks that we haven't found any gems yet, but maybe there are other things in the mines? You know we have to go to that nest still. And you know that we often find familiars as we go.
The Vulticus was quite accurate with that, as there were few times they had left the mines without bringing others home. The point of this trip however, was to find the item from the nest. And the only way to find the nest was to keep moving forward. It didn't mean they couldn't stop occasionally to mousy around, but she had a good feeling that this trip was going to be primarily sent searching for this nest. They didn't have much hopes when it came to even knowing the direction of the nest. Amelia agreed to this suggestion, and began packing up her stuff once more. Organizing tools into the cart, she made sure not to bump the sleeping Sarane hatchling. No reason to cause a fuss and wake the sleeping baby creature, as she wasn't very quick moving around and it would be a poor idea to make her walk.

The mammalian began pulling the cart with ease. Her body was muscular beneath her coat, and the additional strength allowed her to pull the cart longer distances then her previous form would have. Charlie walked along side her with ease, and they slowly began their journey deeper into the mine. It was incredible how large these tunnels were, and it shocked the snow leopard that she had so much land that she had not discovered yet. Maggie had come from here. A whole species of Sarane had adapted to these mines and lived in the complete darkness. They were able to find meat and not only survive but flourish here. When Gentle had found Maggie she was terrified the hatchling had been wandering around forever. However, the plump hatchling did not seem to have went too long without its mother. Her knowledge of the species told her that when a hatchling wandered too far and got lost, it was very unlikely to find its mother again. From a young age they would be able to scavenge and survive by themselves, but it was better for the hatchlings to spend as much time with their mothers as possible. The black Sarane were some of the few that would protect its eggs and raise their young for so long. Because life was so difficult in the deep caves, the young had to spend more time with its mother in order to survive.
Charlie stopped moving, which caused the snow leopard to stop in her tracks. a loud wind soared through the cave. It caused both to shudder and exchange looks - this seemed to be where they were supposed to be going.

She had never seen a Sarane nest before, and she was a bit afraid. There was an item in one she had to get. Now the problem was, she had no idea what she was supposed to be looking for. She also had no idea if there would be a Sarane mother guarding it, or actual Sarane babies. Was it even breeding season? Did the cave dwellers work the same as other Sarane? And what would a Sarane nest out here even look like? Were they craters in the wall? Were there different things further into the mine? Charlie seemed confident they were going in the right direction. He said he could smell it, but honestly the mammalian wasn't sure how true that was. Or even what it was that he could smell. The Vulticus lead the way further on, stopping to stare at an odd rock or a spot in the wall occasionally. The mammalian accepted this, and let the Vulticus pick the direction they were going in. Occasionally they would come to a fork in their path. She would look at him, he would think for a few moments, then choose the direction. She also had a basic idea of directions, but at this point she wasn't even sure if she was in the right place. There was no discernible landmarks, and everything basically looked the same. It was quite empty here, neither of them were finding much in terms of gems or other life. She had thought she had seen something once, but then it was gone right away. The hatchling slept easily in the cart, as she would have easily tired by now.

If the hatchling was awake however, she might be some help. Although she isn't a cave dwelling Sarane, it may be possible that just being a Sarane hatchling could help. She might know the smell of the mother, or the tell tale signs that a nest was nearby. Amelia was confident they were going the right way however, so perhaps as they continued on and she began to lose confidence, the hatchling would be well rested and able to help. Charlie nuzzled her leg and rested his head against her.
I think we're doing well. There's something I smell down here. I'm not sure if its a Sarane I guess, but I can tell it's something thats alive. Its not the same smell that the gem creatures given off, it's something with flesh and bone. I promise. If it's not something Sarane like we find, well it's gonna still be something you've never seen down here before. He looked away as he stated the last part. What if it was something really dangerous?
She stopped in her tracks, focusing on a sound she had heard. Did you hear that?
Yes, that's the way we're going. I think it could be water. Which gives us a better likelihood to find the nest. Sarane have to nest near water or they can't survive.
It made sense, other creatures that the Sarane would eat, (perhaps tunnel worms?) would also have to come near water at some points to survive. It made sense to her that the direction Charlie could smell 'life' was also the direction where water passed by.
